J H Does this software solve the problem of only half my font collection appearing in the Photoshop font dropdown list?
Nov 7 2007 at 1:04am Copy Link
0
Erwin Denissen It depends on the exact cause of the problem. It could be that the Adobe font cache is corrupt, that one or more of your fonts are corrupt, or that the number of installed fonts is simply too much for either Windows or Photoshop to handle. MainType can't fix a corrupt cache, but it CAN detect corrupt fonts. We typically recommend that you have no more than 500 fonts installed, and on older systems with limited memory (Windows Me with 128 MB RAM, for example) you should have no more than 100 active fonts. To ensure you can use as many fonts as you like, you can use MainType to organize your fonts into groups and quickly load or unload them as needed.

R Wood A great tool for loading fonts in groups depending on the purpose. One set for formal reports, another set for creative work, etc. Load on the fly keeps the number of core fonts down.

It also helped me identify that I had the same font loaded under two names -- one from Bitstream and one from Adobe.

Michael M Because I used fonts on my websites and Photoshop, I need a viewer and manager instead of always saying "use font" to see what the selected font looks like.

I have 1760 fonts gathered over the past 17 years. I am lucky that the files are not corrupt. MainType detected all of them and has let me manage them. I "mainly" like being able to view them all and make my selections for the task at hand.

This program has saved me a lot of time, money and frustration. I bought this from Bits about six or seven months ago. Lucky for those of you who did not get it back then. Snap it up while you can.

Louis H Have really enjoyed working with the demo version this past week. Very helpful in getting control over the thousands of fonts I currently have on my system. Especially like the ability to group them according to my own criteria and easily load and unload groups as I need them.
I'm now simply waiting for midnight for the discount to take effect.

S B I use MainType 3 on Windows 7 and like it a lot. MainType is certainly one of the very best in its category.

It's easy to use, and it lets me see more information about fonts than I expected there was (I can sort, select, and filter on these attributes, too). I particularly like its ability to list fonts within a directory and its subdirectories (switchable with an option "toggle" button).

It runs through and displays a list of a thousand fonts in several seconds. It quickly installs/uninstalls fonts and will "Load"/"Unload" fonts: temporarily installing them.

MainType is also great for managing, grouping, previewing, and selecting fonts to load, install, or use.

There is a well-written user manual, and though you'll only need it to discover MainType's advanced features, it's helpful generally.

Highly recommended.

Diego SEO Please, consider a similar offer for the Pro version.

As a casual user of this kind of tools, the price is a bit high to me but the "Font activation plugins" feature looks very interesting.

Gina Anderson Hello, is this offer upgrade to the pro version? Also, I'm unclear as to what exactly the differences are between this version and the pro version:

What are custom views? Is this the ability to move the program panes around where I want them?

Font activation plugins...does this mean that if I use the version being offered, and I load a font, it won't be usable in my Adobe C6 programs unless I buy the pro?

Am I able to set me own text to preview in this version? Say I only wanted to see the name "Gina" in the fonts chosen, can I do that in this version?

Thank you,
Gina

Louis H Gina...

While you are waiting for a more official response, you might want to look here for some answers to a few of your questions..

On Custom Views...

http://www.high-logic.com...views.html

I believe the Activation Plug In feature is the following...
"Auto-activation plug-ins for Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign CS5, CS5.5, and CS6) " (Only available in the Professional version.) My understanding is you can still activate the fonts using the Standard Version, you simply have to do it manually.

and

On The Registry Fixer...

http://www.high-logic.com...fixer.html

And of course you are limited to handling 10,000 Fonts in the standard version and Unlimited in the Professional version.

I have been using V 4.5 for sometime now, happy with it, it meets my home needs. Still not sure I am ready to upgrade at this time. (It is very nice pricing, by the way, for the upgrade - or was - I haven't checked it as of late.)

Hope this helps. I know sometimes the Vendors are not able to get back to us in time for us to make a decision on whether or not to grab the deal.

Gina Anderson Hi Louis H, thanks for the help :) I did try looking at the manual and I couldn't find anything on "custom views" thanks for pointing me to the exact page. I get it now. :)

I'm still unclear on the benefit/actions of the plugins. I ended up downloading the trial version so I could try and make sense of it.When the plugins are not installed, if I right click and choose "Load" on a font, it shows up in my programs. Is that what you mean by "manual"? What do the plugins do? The only one that comes up as installable for me is for Adobe InDesign. I installed it, but can't figure out what it does. :P

Thank you for your input. I do hope the company has an offical response on the upgradability issue. I am just know looking for font management software so some of the terms I am not familiar with.

Thanks again,
Gina

Avi S Hi Erwin,

The program's interface is very intuitive, and I did in fact puchase a copy. Your post here about unicode support was very encouraging.

However, as it happens, I'm experiencing severe problems with the unicode support. Specifically, whenever I type Hebrew text into the sample type dialogs (e.g. in the "preview" text, or in the "sample"box), the program freezes up completely. Even after waiting for five minutes, I have to shut it down with Task Manager. This happens whether I am changing the preview text with an inline operation, or whether I do through the dialog.

Michael Guilfoyle Just bought but did not realise there was a pro version. Which I need for 10K - costs $49 to upgrade - there should be a pro version offer and a warning before buying. Not that happy.

Avi S Erwin - I've isolated the problem a little bit more. I can in fact paste Hebrew text from the clipboard into the sample type dialogs, without a problem. And the Sample Text box even has a "right to left reading order" option, which is wonderful.

However, it is upon switching languages to Hebrew that the program freezes. That is - if I type Hebrew in another application and copy and paste it into MainType, no problem. But if I'm in Maintype - anywhere in the interface - and I simply hit my hotkey to switch the keyboard to Hebrew, the entire program freezes. Is this a known bug?

BearPup I installed the software with great hope; before I could test the program however my Startup Warning System alerted me to what this software was trying to do behind my back:
"FMSProxy is a small program that runs in the background and is connected to the High-Logic Font Management Service. It acts as a doorway between the fontservice (running as administrator) and your user environment where your fonts are installed. ".
I don't take kindly to programs that insert themselves into my startup routine without asking. And I take great exception to any program that opens up "a doorway" into my computer.

That behavior is typical of viruses and other malware. The software is now uninstalled. BitsDuJour, I expect better from you.

ForumGuru Some may not take kindly to start menu insertion but the activity does not appear to be malicious, the virus total is a big fat 0, and the reviews for this software are good. "The 3 main tasks of the FMSProxy are: Notify the High-Logic Font Management Service of changes in the loaded fonts Load/Install fonts for plugins Retrieve fonts from the network that the fontservice can't access" http://www.high-logic.com...proxy.html It's not like they are hiding the file and it's quite easy to find in your Windows Task Manager. No. That is not virus-like behavior. Your message is what happens because security companies dumb down their messages for too many users.
It's nice that it alerted you to a change in your start-up routine. But the doorway described is exactly what it said "between your user account and the font management service" nothing more. Open Task Manager and count all of the services running and be aware they are all "doorways."
There is nothing wrong with the it installing as a service (your security software probably installed more than one). This is how it can install/uninstall fonts while Windows is running.
Your accusations border on hysteria and you've uninstalled a very nice utility. Your loss.

BearPup @ForumGuru: The program itself may be benign, but leaving an unknown port open is not something I allow any program to do without first getting my permission to do so. If my Warning System hadn't been actively watching for misbehavior, the program would have gotten onto my computer, left a port open, and done it all surreptitiously.

I don't trust software that tries to sneak around me - its why I have a Warning System in place to begin with. I'd rather be vigilant than infected. I use Font Runner x64, which provides sufficient font tools without having to sneak around my computer to do so.

Ports and "doorways" are completely different things. You are making accusations based on your misunderstanding and are thereby misinforming the BDJ community using inflammatory words such as "misbehavior," "surreptitiously" and "infected."
While everyone should be vigilant regarding software that they install, your pretense as to being some sort of authority does everyone here a disservice.
You would be much better served by asking questions rather than making foolish accusations.
I have no affiliation with High-Logic or BDJ, but I really hate seeing well written software maligned. MainType is a properly designed utility. There is simply NO malicious behavior to be found here (other than perhaps in your comments).

BearPup @Gde Swart: You would do well to read what I actually say instead of your agenda about negative comments. I object to software that installs auto anything. Its my computer and I'll decide what gets install when and how, not the software company.

If someone enters your house without your permission, would you welcome them with open arms or with wariness? You can be pollyanna if you want, but uninvited 'guests' are not welcome on my computer. And as the software didn't announce its intentions, I did. That's providing an information service, not bad behavior.

Gde Swart @bearpup

I have no agenda regarding valid concerns. I object to unnecessary, loaded language. I read what you said and I stand by my posts.
Your choice of words misrepresented this program and called into question the vendor's reputation. You did not merely provide information, you made charges and thereby performed a disservice.
High-Logic has been in business 17 years and has an active user community. MainType is on version 5.1 (FontCreator is at version 7.5). You don't get there producing malicious software.
While I agree with your concerns regarding software taking privileges during installation, examining the company and product reputation is of equal importance to me as is monitoring the installation (which I do very closely). High-Logic makes no secret that this product installs as a service and there is nothing unusual or wrong with how MainType installs itself as you continue to suggest.
I have no intention of prolonging this discussion, so feel free to get in the last word, but you may want to reread your comments (and mine) before you do.

Jeffrey Taylor Despite its many capabilities, my first impression of the program is that two features that are important to me are missing. I found no workaround in the manual. Let me know if I've missed something. If not, I encourage you to implement these features in future builds.

The first thing I looked for was to see how many fonts I had installed. "Active" fonts is not necessarily the same as "installed" fonts, but there is no predefined view for "installed" fonts. I think this is foundational, and should not need a workaround.

With its modular construction, I was hoping that MainType would allow me to do something that I haven't been able to do: see side-by-side text samples in different fonts. I see that the panels can be moved around on screen, but don't see how multiples of the same panel can be displayed. However, I can't imagine what purpose would be served by displaying duplicates of any of the panels except Sample, Font Information, and Characters.
Implementing this feature would also require a change to the View panel, so that different fonts could be selected for display in the different panels.

Erwin Denissen @Jane Blue: I'm sorry about not responding to your posts.

In MainType a font is considered active when it is either installed or loaded. An installed font is available to all applications even after a reboot. Loaded fonts are no longer available after the system is rebooted.

And yes you can easily load, install and uninstall groups.

The service is there for a couple of reasons:
- No elevation when you install or uninstall fonts
- Extremely fast and reliable database driven
- MainType Plug-ins allow you to automatically activate missing fonts from other programs without even having to start MainType.

Ian Bunting @Jane Blue.
Loading is a way of giving access to a font without leaving it installed persistently.
That is typically used by applications providing their own fonts.
Unloading afterwards prevents it cluttering up the font list in other applications when it is no longer required.
Install is when more persistent use is required, when you don't want to load and unload on demand and uninstall is the removal of a font being used that way.

Mr Dave First, this looks like one of the best programs I've seen in a while - does what it's supposed to do and does it well. Someone else asked for a way to see two or more fonts for comparing them, I would like that also. Not the font information, but what they look like. Instead of a new window, maybe it would be possible to select 2 or more fonts, and then quickly switch between them by pressing number keys (1 for font 1, 2 for font 2, etc.). Seeing the characters switch instantly in the zoom and text sample and character set windows would make it very easy spot minor differences and choose the best one.

Like many others I also have had many many issues with BitsDuJour hanging when I clidk "Get it now". I use Firefox and problems started near the end of last year. I have many extensions and have tried disabling NoScript, Ghostery, AdBlock Plus and even Avast! antivirus but that hasn't helped. I found that Chrome always works for me, but since I don't normally use it I don't have extensions loaded for it. If I run Firefox in Safe Mode (right-click the Firefox item when starting and select Safe Mode) then Firefox also works. Either of these is a disruptive workaround so I tend to not even try most of the software offered here. I miss the good ol' days when BitsDuJour simply worked!

DrF Downloaded, installed, and registered without problem (perhaps not using Facebook helps).

Anyhow, after installing the program and playing with it for about 10 minutes, I uninstalled the other two font managers I've used for years.

Love this software already, and can't wait to explore more of its features.

Jane Blue I didn't have any trouble with the download using Firefox. I received the reg code with no problem as well. For those having trouble, try FF.

Question for the vendor: I was looking at Font Creator (not the Home edition) and Scanhand (I think it was called) ...will you be offering either one of those programs on Bits at some point in the future?

Jeffrey Sherratt I've ordered and received Font Creator for $39 but can't get to a link for the free copy of MainType Standard Edition for PC. I've tried the facebook pages you list above and get to a page that says MainType 100% off but there is no link. I have liked the page so it should work.

It's alright I'm sorted, just received a seperate email from High-Logic with the registration code
