What are people saying about MediaMonkey

trek Why only 12 months of updates? If I buy MediaMonkey from the official site I have the updates for version 4.x.
Aug 4 2012 at 2:08am Copy Link
0
Michael R. Wow, pretty much features... :-)

Can we buy the lifetime-license-version too?

Can I let MediaMonkey run through my external harddisks, catalog the media-files on them (without copying them) and let me later, when they are not connected, check, which files are out there and when I want to hear a certain song, ask me to plug in the appropriate harddisk to do so?

Can the databases be encrypted?
Aug 6 2012 at 2:19am Copy Link

Russell Samuels @trek, re. 12 months of updates, that means that we commit to offering a _minimum_ of 12 months of updates. i.e. this includes all updates to version 4.x, and if we release version 5.x prior to 12 months after your date of purchase, you'll also receive a free update to 5.x and all updates to the 5.x version.

@Michale R., the lifetime license isn't available through this promotion. Re. accessing files that have been scanned but are inaccessible, MediaMonkey will grey out tracks that are inaccessible, but it won't give you a specific message to plug the drive back in. Re. whether the DB can be encrypted, there's no integrated option, but you can configure the db to be stored to a location on an encrypted drive.

Michael R. Thanks for your answers.

After buying today's gold-edition, is it possible to upgrade 'gold' to 'gold-lifetime' later? E.g. for the difference between the two standard-prices (i.e. 24,95$)?

Is the information where a greyed-out file (i.e. a file which is currently not available because the appropriate device is not accessible), is located available. This information should contain the device-name (i.e. the harddisk's name), the partition-name and the filepath and filename. If not, do you consider to implement this in one of your next updates? It would be a great help for people, who have a bunch of harddisks...

Russell Samuels @Michael, Whenever we release a new version we offer existing users the option to upgrade at a discounted price that'll credit you for the majority of your purchase price. As far as giving users feedback re. the location of the file, you can actually have this show up on your screen by enabling the 'Path' column, and making it wide enough to see the drive letter. As far as adding a new feature for that, I'm not sure that it's of much benefit given that it's currently visible in the manner described above.

@Amit, re. plugins, MediaMonkey is compatible with most Winamp 2.x plugins, but not with Winamp skins. In addition there are hundreds of other addons in the scripts/addons forum: http://www.mediamonkey.co...um.php?f=2 . The main difference between MediaMonkey and Winamp is that MediaMonkey is designed primarily to help you manage and organize your music, whereas winamp was designed as a player.

@Don, yes the Gold version is compatible with Win 7 Pro 64.

@Gary, re. the advantages of Gold vs. the free version, see: http://www.mediamonkey.com/download/ and http://www.mediamonkey.co...tion/gold/ . Our general philosophy is that the free version should be able to compete with iTunes or Windows Media Player, whereas the Gold version has a lot more advanced functionality. As to specific questions:
- It does manage/sync/copy media to portable devices (incl. Android, iPhone, mtp devices, usb mass storage devices).
- It can play shoutcast streams (or others via plugins)
Check out the links above for more details on the features.

@Rich, MediaMonkey isn't really designed to organize DVD collections, but rather to manage video files that have been ripped from DVDs.

Eric B I am NOT associated with MM, but am a very satified user. I used the basic version for a while, then purchased the gold version mainly for the automatic format conversion feature and to support the work these guys are doing.

One of the things I really like is that I can rip audio in to a format like FLAC to have a perfect copy in case the CD is lost/damaged and then convert all of the files to WMA for my various players. In the gold version, MM will automatically convert from the ripped format to the format supported by your player, but I like storing 2 seperate copies so that I can use Windows Explorer to copy the files the thumb drives or MP3 players in a hurry.

Another thing is that support tickets get answered quickly and the answers are easy to understand and work as the response says the will. The folks in the forums are VERY knowledgable and very active so most of the time I don't even need to open a ticket. I can generally find an answer to my issue by searching the forums, or if the question has not been asked, I have never waited more than 4 hours for someone (or multiple someones) to give me answers or suggestions to my question.

No Name I guess the point that Michael was trying to get at, and myself too, is that if we purchase gold through this promotion, can we then upgrade to the lifetime. Or if we want all updates in perpertuity, is this promotion pretty much useless to us.

Russell Samuels If you want to get a lifetime license, the cheapest way to do so is to take advantage of this offer, and then e.g. in 1.5 years when we release MM 5 @$60 (for lifetime license), we'll give existing Gold users a discount coupon entitling them to e.g. 40% discount on the upgrade to lifetime. So yeah, that's not 40% off on a lifetime license, but it's still cheaper than any other approach (we won't be launching promos for the lifetime license--except to existing Gold users).

And besides, you'll get to use MediaMonkey Gold now, along with the knowledge that you're supporting its development ;-)

Colin McAllister Hi. I already have MediaMonkey Gold and I think it's definitely the best cataloguer of cd data out there. Tagging is so easy my dog could do it and play-lists are quick to make. If I didn't already have this, I wouldn't hesitate to get this deal today.

@Russell, the one thing that would make MediaMonkey totally unassailable, would be hard links - i.e if I have the same tune on 3 albums (e.g. Greatest Hits + 90's Hits+ British Cheeky Monkey Hits), I physically only have 1 copy that is referenced by all 3 albums. I'm sure you will know what I mean. Any sign of that coming in the future (say MM5?)
Aug 7 2012 at 12:35pm Copy Link
0
Russell Samuels @Colin, we'd discussed this internally some time ago and were considering adding multiple album support (in the same manner as we have multiple artist support), but it wouldn't have been very clean because certain other attributes are also tied to albums (e.g. Album Artist, Year, Track number, Disc number, publisher, etc.). In other words, it's not a simple feature to implement properly. ATM, we're focused on MM 4.1 and wireless sync with Android.

Michael R. Thanks again for the answers. In the meantime I bought it, confident about being able to upgrade to a lifetime version when the next version will appear (in about 1 1/2 years). Regarding my earlier question about accessing files from a certain location somewhere in a bunch of harddisks and your answer. Unfortunately I don't think it's sufficient to store just the drive-letter and the path to this file, because just knowing the file was at drive G: at scanning time says neither anything about the harddisk it is stored on, nor about the partition it was stored on.So the user would have to check out all his harddisks and partitions for the desired file. If however the harddisk's name and partition's name (and perhaps the container, e.g. if it was located inside a TrueCrypt-file or device) the user would immediately know which harddisk he has to plug in and at which partition he has to look at. (Just wanted to clear out the missing benefit you referred to in your answer, so perhaps you will reconsider...) In the answer to my first posting (about encryption) you said, the location of the DB (=archive?) could be configured to be defined at a user-given location. How can I do that? (I can't find this in the preferences and the online-help says that it is stored in 'C:\Benutzer\ \AppData\Lokal\MediaMonkey\ ' in Vista (Win7 is not mentioned there at all)). Can I perhaps call MM from a command-line with a certain archive to use? This would also help for the former issue: I could create a separate archive for each external harddisk...

Russell Samuels @Faisal, MediaMonkey can stream most radio stations, but it can't record and tag those streams.

@Michael, re. the feature request, it would be best to raise the issue in our feature requests forum where it can be more easily discussed and commented on by other members of the community.

re. customization of the DB location, see:

Daniel Jones Is the 40% off coupon valid for the Lifetime version too?
If yes - can the lifetime version be installed on 3 PCs?
Also - do these 3 PCs need to be in the same household or no?

Thanks!
Nov 20 2012 at 7:41am Copy Link

Russell Samuels The 40% off coupon is for the version 4 license, and we guarantee that it'll provide you at least a full year of upgrades (i.e. if we release a version 5 before January 2014--which is likely, you're guaranteed a free license upgrade to version 5).

With respect to the license, it's limited to 3 installs within the same household.

JW Just tried to buy this, but the price showing on cart page is way over $14.99!! In fact it shows it as GBP 20.51 incl tax (for v4 Gold only - without the Codec pack). Surely some mistake here????
$14.99 = £9.42 at today's conversion rate!!

Russell Samuels Hi John. Thanks for your support. Unfortunately, digital river, who runs our store, seems to take a rather large cut on the conversion (we don't make anything on it). The simplest way to avoid this is generally to purchase in USD (and let your bank / credit card company take care of the conversion).

Thanks!

JW Russell - I wish that were the simple answer!
Following your advice, I just tried to purchase in US$ from the link on this BDJ page - but it shows the full price ($24.99) and not the reduced one ($14.99)! Plus the dreaded taxes of course.
The price of the codec package IS showing as being reduced.

Russell Samuels John, Jason,
I just tested it out and the coupon is working--it gives a 40% discount. Did you enter the coupon when you got to the cart?

The coupon is: oneday40off

(note: the coupon only discounts the price of MediaMonkey 40%--not the codec pack)

JW Russell - You obviously have much greater faith than I do in Order forms!!
Yes, you're quite correct that if you do progress through the purchase process then you can enter the Coupon much later on - but that is very different to the 'normal' method used by every other BDJ purchase I have made here, where the Coupon is entered automatically at the start of the purchase process. In that way you can see exactly what you're going to be charged from the off - rather than waiting to 'almost the point of committal' before you get to see the actual/real cost you're going to be charged. And the price is different if you go through as US Dollar transaction than a GBP transaction - by a couple of quid!
Anyway, it's done now - but I still don't like not seeing the final price from the start.

Eddie Tex Russell, I hate to ask you this here, but I am a previous registered user of MediaMonkey 3.0. I'm trying to contact anyone with Ventis Media about upgrading (possibly to a lifetime license), but I'm finding it extremely difficult. In order to contact sales support, I need to submit a ticket. To submit a ticket, I need to login. To login, I need my username or password, which I can't recall, so when I try to create a new account, I'm told an account exists with my email address (my own no doubt). Please advise.

Diego SEO Hi,

I have installed the trial and I'm facing the same problem than with all the Media Manager software that I have tested.

After importing the movies (using folder monitoring), the program gathers the movie title from the full file name so it's necessary to edit it afterwards (from within the program) in order to scrape the web and get the tags and audio/movie info.

So, for example, if I have my files named this way:

20000 Years in Sing Sing. Michael Curtiz, 1932

The program is not able to gather the media info. It's necessary to rename it to: "20000 Years in Sing Sing"

So, please tell me: Is it possible to configure the program to only gather the name of the movie before the first separator (a dot in this case, a minus sign or other symbols).

Or, better yet, Is it possible to train the program in order to detect and properly import the fields (tags) from the file names?. Example: $1 = Title, $3 = Director, $4 = Year.

If this could be possible I would definitely choose MediaMonkey as my Media Manager.

Two more questions:

- Is it possible to export the library to a format that other programs can understand?

- Is it possible to batch import the movie details from the Web (from an entire directory tree)?

TIA

bvssunnydale Why would I consider the the separate codec pack (it's an addition fee)? I'm really curious. Also, apparently, this isn't for the lifetime version (apparently?) that the commentators mention, right? Just version 4. Thanks for your help.

Good question. Would like to know this too.

And I can't find the upgrade price from this gold version to a lifetime license. Just the difference, or what?

Edward Smith I would strongly suggest that you look here before you buy!

http://www.mediamonkey.co...wont-start

There are quite a number of programs that Media Monkey will not work with, including many that I use.

In several instances their answer is to uninstall the program. For others, their answer is to purchase a different program that MM does work with.

One of them, Display Fusion, they say MM will not work with Display Fusion hibernation. Hibernation has nothing to do with it for me. If I have Display Fusion running at all MM will crash on startup. Their recommendation to is not to use Display Fusion.

Again, I strongly suggest you look at the referenced page to see what you have that may cause conflict before you make this purchase.

BDJ coupon code doesn't work for the lifetime license. What a shame.

Russell Samuels First of all, sorry for the delayed response. To answer your questions:

DougandBethany: MediaMonkey does convert Flac to Alac.

bvsunnydale: the codec pack is used to convert video to formats for which encoders aren't natively included with windows (e.g. to MP4).

Re. the license: we generally only run promotions on the regular license--it gives you the current version (4.1) of MediaMonkey + any minor updates (4.x) + any major upgrades (5.x) released within a year of purchase.

As to the question of incompatibility with certain apps--the apps mentioned make system-level changes that trigger issues with many apps besides MediaMonkey. The knowledgebase article is there to share information about how to work around those issues if possible.

Russell Samuels Yes--the 40% discount is for MediaMonkey for Windows Gold. The promotion is on March 24th.

Mar 23 2015 at 10:46am Copy Link

Russell Samuels The discount applies to the standard gold license which entitles you to all 4.x version upgrades. In addition, we commit that should a major release (e.g. MM 5.x) be released within a year, then you'll get a free upgrade to that version as well.

Russell Samuels Nazmi / Lupke: The discount applies to only to the regular gold license-not to the lifetime Gold license.

Reinhold: currently, the best Spanish translation is the Spanish (Argentinia) translation. There's a regular Spanish translation as well but it's not completely up to date.

Samir Desai With Media Monkey, can I stream an iso file from WITHIN list in MediaMonkey software, and play it with my default player on the default device? For example: I have a projector (connected to Onkyo 626 DLNA receiver) which allows me to browse a pc (PC1) which is also connected the same receiver. But, the actual iso video file is located on a different pc (PC2) on the network which I can navigate from PC1. The question boils down to: Can this software allow me to pick-and-choose an ISO file on the pc, and play? If yes, then I no longer have to jump to the Windows Explorer to find that ISO file and double-click and play. Thanks.
Mar 24 2015 at 11:24am Copy Link

Russell Samuels Samir: MediaMonkey doesn't treat ISO files as playable content (or for that matter content that can be served via the UPnP/DLNA server). So no, it wouldn't meet this particular requirement.

Samir Desai Which file formats can I pick-and-choose to stream from my networked pc, and play (using my default player VideoLAN VLC) from within MediaMonkey? Thanks.
Mar 24 2015 at 12:15pm Copy Link

Russell Samuels You can share any content that's playable in MediaMonkey (MP3, AAC (M4A), OGG, WMA, FLAC, MPC, WAV, CDA, AVI, MP4, OGV, MPEG, WMV) via DLNA and/or (assuming you have a Gold license) automatically convert it on-the-fly to a format that's supported by your player. Note that the content is downloaded by the UPnP player--not streamed. If MediaMonkey is the client, it pre-caches files so this is pretty much transparent to the user--I'm not sure how VLC handles this.

Tortuga @Russell, Hello
I bought MM Gold Nov.2012 here on BdJ
At the time 4.07 was the current version, but nothing much happened for a looong time, 4.10 came out ~early 2014, 4.1.5 in October.
Early you said "... which entitles you to all 4.x version upgrades"
So, even if it's over a year, I can still upgrade to 4.1.5, right?
Thanks in advance
Peace

Russell Samuels Yes. You're entitled to all 4.x updates.

David Drane I have this and it is great. It is a bit of an all in one solution as it manages the library, auto-integrates new purchases (set to auto check my music download folder), checks tags for consistency (which is great for those with OCD on their collection). It syncs my ipod I use in one car with the PC and my android phone updating the play count across them all. Auto-playlists, Podcasts etc There isnt much it doesn't do. It can also use the Sonos speaker system for those with that.

May 11 2016 at 3:05am Copy Link

Russell Samuels This is a 1-year license which normally goes for $24.95. Discounted upgrades to lifetime licenses are always made available to existing license holders upon the release of new versions.

David Chamberlain Three questions - will this deal with a problem I have that when you buy a compilation album such as 100 best relaxing classics some programs (e.g. amazon music) separates them out into the individual albums they originally were compiled from when you ask to list albums thus getting 60+ albums rather then the one compilation album you purchased and ripped to MP3?.

Secondly will it work with amazon fire versions of Android?.

Finally will it cope with non western characters sets in the titles of film e.g. Russian and Chinese/Japanese/korean

Russell Samuels David,
1) Albums will appear as a single album as long as the album has an Album Artist of 'Various Artists' and the Artists/Composers vary by track. If tracks are incorrectly tagged with a different Album Artist per track, then they'll appear as individual albums.

2) MediaMonkey for Windows will sync over USB to Amazon fire devices. Unfortunately, MediaMonkey for Android is not available on the Amazon App store for Fire devices due to Amazon's policies, so you'll need to sideload the app and some features will not be available (see more at http://www.mediamonkey.co...le-devices ).

3) Yes. MediaMonkey for Windows supports non-western characters. You can try out the free version if you want to test it out.

Russell Samuels David,
To answer your last question:
4) MediaMonkey allows you to configure which locations to include in the library. If for whatever reason you decide to include both source and backup locations, both sets of files will be included in the library and you have duplicate-finding tools to help you find and eliminate the dups (based on title or file hash).

Hope that helps!

John User A few years ago I purchased a lifetime license to Media Monkey Gold and I have been more than happy with the job this software does in taming and managing my music and video collection. Honestly, I've had it for some time and every time I open the program I discover something new else it can do.

My question is if this is the same program being here? Does the 'GOLD' add-on mean anything?

Thanks, and if anyone is looking for a media organizing and managing program, look no further than this one.
May 11 2016 at 7:57am Copy Link
0
Russell Samuels This is the same program that you purchased in the past (although there are updates at least 4 times per year).

When you purchase MediaMonkey via this deal, you'll receive a 'Gold' license that activates all of the functionality so that it's no longer just a trial version. i.e. 'Gold' license = paid version (rather than trial version).

Summary: you've already purchased MediaMonkey so there's no need to purchase the (Gold) license again.

Richard User I have used MediaMonkey for years (with a Gold Lifetime license) and overall have been extremely happy with it. It easily handles my on-disk music collection of over 250,000 mp3 tracks. MediaMonkey also handles movies and other videos, podcasts, etc., although I don't use it for that. (Not an interest of mine.) MediaMonkey is very flexible and very powerful. It can use most WinAmp plug-ins, and there is a very active user community and forum. It includes a DNLA server, so you can play your media on your Smart TV, if you wish. There are Android apps that let you control MediaMonkey on your PC with your phone. Highly recommended.

Doug User I see Media Monkey uses AccurateRip. I have used to make sure a rip is accurate at the time of ripping. But now I find I have rips that are incomplete.

Can Media Monkey use this or any other db to check the accuracy of my files as it reads my catalog(s) or does this have to be done manually, flac file by flac file?

Dennis Wallentin Russell,

Thanks for the input but it does not work.

Adding:
I made one last try.
Copied the code
Went to Your site
Started the process and
got the discount!

Now I run the pro version and will set up the sync between the mobile and the computer. Take this opportunity to express my appreciation of the software. It's very easy to manage but I wish You fix the themes to the next version as the only readable option for me is to use the Windows 10 settings.

Thanks!

Russell Samuels M Be,
MediaMonkey 5 is currently in the works, but we don't have a firm release date. My expectation is that it'll be released within the year in which case you'd be entitled to an upgrade to MM5.

Doug,
AccurateRip in MM is currently only designed to be used at the time that the rip operation takes place.
