What are people saying about MetaProducts Offline Browser

Genie au Travail In 2008 I have purchased Inquiry Standard and I would like to know if this product is like Inquiry without the need to integrate the software into web browsers ?

Alexander Bednyakov Genie au Travail, Inquiry allows to save the current page quickly, with ability to edit it before storing and categorize.
MetaProducts Offline Browser is the web site downloader capable to download not single pages only, but also linked pages, whole web sites. And browse them offline later.

SoftCollector This must be sth new to MP's soft lineup. How does it compare to Offline Explorer (Pro)? Is it like a lite version of that?
Aug 18 2011 at 7:05am Copy Link
0
Alexander Bednyakov Yes, it is a lite version (in terms of settings or tweaking features). Its main idea is the new interface near the browser window. Site downloads will be simplified now.

But the downloading and parsing core is the same as in all other Offline Explorer products.

Alexander Bednyakov Patrick Middleton, we do not have the Professional version of MetaProducts Offline Browser yet (http://www.metaproducts.c...rowser.htm.) It is the first member of the future product line.

Merle One Hi,
What's the main difference with Offline Explorer ?
Thanks
Aug 20 2011 at 1:20am Copy Link

Alexander Bednyakov Just another user interface and more simple options to concentrate on page/site downloads. The downloading/parsing engine is the same.

The main goal was to place the offline browser toolbar close to browser windows to get current page URL instantly with 1 click. And create project/start download immediately.

Keith Norton I am trying out the trial version and have a few issues. First, the Help page does not indicate how one can change the location where downloads are saved. I finally stumbled upon it in the software 3 pages deep inside the Wizard. Second, the tool bar covers opened tabs on IE9 and cannot be moved. It appears the only way to access those covered tabs is to drop the MetaProducts toolbar completely off the screen. I've read the help file, but am I missing something? I also note this program does not show up within the IE add-on list despite looking like a toolbar. It appears to not be interfacing properly with IE. Finally, and most importantly, I am not able to browse the saved sites I have tried. I simply get an infinitely spinning busy cursor. I am using Win7/64 and IE9. I did not install the software on the default C drive, but rather to my preferred program drive, designated Z.

Rich OBrien I've used Inquiry, the sister product to MetaProducts Offline Browser, every day. all day since November 2006. I looked forward to at last being able to replace Inquiry with a product which worked with better, much faster browsers than Microsoft Internet Explorer 8. Okay, Inquiry works with IE 9 but I found IE 9 to be so horrible that I had to go back to using IE 8. When I tried Offline Browser, I found that while I could download web pages, I was lost when trying to find my way back to those downloaded web pages. One of the great strengths of Inquiry is that I can organize the web pages I have downloaded into an outline made up of folders for each year which contain folders for each month which contain folders for sets of web pages. I pray that someday the newer Offline Browser's user interface will be improved to make it like Inquiry but have it work in Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari. Inquiry provides a way to display very large "thumbnail" views of each downloaded web page. I'd like to copy the most indicative of those thumbnails so it displays when I hover over the folder. Also, I can put my own tiny 16x16 pixel icons on each folder but Inquiry and someday Offline Browser would be better if we could have larger folders icons. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are following the Apple Mac in using ever larger icons. Inquiry and Offline Browser should do the same. I'm going to buy Offline Browser at $24.97 because I wish to support MetaProducts work on this new product. There is definitely more work to be done before this will replace Inquiry which means until then I'm stuck in the slow lane using Internet Explorer 8.

Oleg Chernavin Keith Norton:

Yes, sorry for missing this info in the Help file. We will add it.

You can move the toolbar in the Options - Startup Settings section. Check the "Unlock toolbar" box and click the Apply button.

Offline browsing - perhaps, Windows firewall blocks the Internal server of MetaProducts Offline Browser. Can you please check this?
Aug 20 2011 at 9:39am Copy Link

Keith Norton Indeed, turning off my Kaspersky firewall allowed me to view the saved pages, but only intermittently. Sometimes the viewed page would be stable, sometimes it would flash on and off, and sometimes it would not load at all. Killing Kaspersky completely permits more consistent behavior. I verified that your software is in my Kaspersky "trusted" list but still cannot get them to work together with any reliability. Kaspersky is not giving me any warnings but there is apparently some sort of incompatibility.

Preston Mitchell Wrong Software to Offer...so No Dice!

I almost bought Offline Browser. But I visited MetaProducts web site...whereat I noticed and reviewed Offline Explorer Pro. After comparing each software's features, I got the impression that Offline Browser is the poor cousin to Explorer Pro. So, please offer Explorer Pro on Bits...and I will open my wallet to buy that software....but no thanks for offering Offline Browser!

Keith Norton I agree with Preston Mitchell: some of their other offerings appear much superior. I am trying out their Inquiry Pro and am very impressed. Unlike the current offering, I am having no conflicts with Kaspersky and everything seems more intuitive and slicker.

Alexander Bednyakov Keith Norton:

Yes, Inquiry has no conflicts because of absence of internal web server. We will try to reproduce this issue and see whether some fix from Kaspersky is necessary.

Preston Mitchell:

Thank you! We will work with BitsDeJour to offer Offline Explorer Pro here.

I look forward to buying Offline Explorer Pro when it is offered on Bits. May that happen sooner than later.
