Dan P One of the best pieces of software I've purchased from Bits Du Jour. Highly recommended if you're in need of a CSV editor.

naveed Can you do any math like summing a column?

Evan User This version does not. Version 2 with a business license will do some math and statistics operations on columns, including summation. I don't have a release date, but it will be in the near future.

Henry User I have a delimited document, that is 6.5 gig in size, has 20 million records and 47 fields. Each record is a different person.

I am using a computer with up to date Windows 11 and plenty of memory and disk space.

To my surprise, Moden CSV was able to load and display it. It started by telling me that, due to the size of the document, it would be read only. It took a few minutes to load.

I knew that a certain last name appears in the document about 25 times. So, I did a search of that field for that last name. About 30 minutes have elapsed and the rotating window circle just keeps rotating without any movement away from the first record.

Can you tell us:

1. What does read only mean in this context? I always thought it only meant that the data could not be changed.

2. What are the practical limitations of Modern CSV with regard to file, record and field size?

Evan User 1. In read-only mode, rather than loading the file into memory, the app indexes it and reads it straight off the disk. I enabled a few features that aren't "read-only" strictly speaking. These are sort, hide, and filter.

2. In read-only mode, memory usage is approximately 20% of the file size. It loads the file faster, but sort, filter, and find operations run slower than edit mode.

In edit more, memory usage is 3 to 4 times the file size. It's a bit slower to load, but all the operations are faster.

Assuming you have enough memory, it can handle up to 2 billion rows and columns (2,147,483,648 to be exact). For all intents and purposes, there are no limits to field sizes. People have had several MBs in a single field.

For a 6.5 GB file, if you have 20 to 25 GB free, that might be the better way to go.

If you're searching for just last names, you can select the entire column. Then, in the Find pane, enable the "Match Only in Selected Cells" button (2nd from the right). That way, it will only search that column rather than the entire file.

Evan User I recently switched corporations, so PFOJ Enterprises no longer exists and it's now run under Gallium Digital. I apologize for any confusion.

Henry User As far as I can tell., this program is very good for viewing and editing delimited data. files and for searching for the presence of words within files. It can also sort and replace.

It does not perform calculations and does not provide for printing or for the creation of macros that will check or reorganize data.

What it does do, it does well and can do so for huge files.

If I have oversimplified it, perhaps Evan can describe it further.,

fpi fpi @Evan User, thanks for the explanation.
But Concerning "Gallium Digital" no details or existence, seems available on the Web.
No mailing address.
Finally, are you the genuine developer ?

MK Good grief: two seconds on the Modern CSV website and found they reference Gallium in their license:

Richard Blake Can a v1.x personal license purchased through BdJ be upgraded to a business license when v2 is released?

Evan User @fpi fpi If it helps, the website is galliumdigital.net (As you can see from the site, I don't anticipate much traffic there). Yes, I'm the developer.

Evan User @Richard Blake Yes, licenses bought here are eligible for discounted upgrades, the same as those bought directly from the website. Version 2 will have updated documentation, although most of it will be the same style - more graphics/gifs than words. I find that people (myself included) don't like to read a bunch of words, so I try to get to the point as concisely as possible. I will redo some of the outdated graphics including the transpose commands.

Evan User @Richard Blake To answer your question about the transpose commands, they flip the data so rows become columns and columns become rows. One works on the entire table and the other works only on the selected portion of the table. I'll make sure that's clearer in the new documentation.

Edit: I just remembered I made a blog post about transposing: https://www.moderncsv.com...csv-files/

Gary User I purchased this in December of 2022. 6 months later they come out with a ew version and want $39 to upgrade. Needless to say I've removed it from my computer and will look elsewhere for a similar program.

Tim Parsons @ Gary User the upgrade price seems to be $39 only if you want the business licence. The personal license upgrade is half that, and v1 of the software seems extremely capable as it is.

For what it's worth, I think you'll struggle to find a competitor, feature for feature. Like you, I'm a bit disappointed that we missed out on the upgrade just by a couple of months, but the upgrade policy wasn't sprung on us by surprise.
