What are people saying about MP3 Speed Changer

fran harter Hi,

I have a question or 2.

1. Is there any specific amount of time it take to process an audio mp3 file?

Example: I have an audio book which is on CD and is 4 hours long.

2. Will the mp3 speed changer convert at a "1 to 1" ratio?
[taking 4 hours to convert a 4 hour mp3]

3. If not, at what time ratio does it convert?
- 2 to 1 ? [a 4 hour mp3 converts in 2 hours]
- 4 to 1? [a 4 hour mp3 converts in 1 hour]

4. Is the conversion time about the same for all 3 audio formats:
- MP3,
- WMA, and OGG files into MP3.

5. Does it take any longer to convert & speed up the WMA and OGG formats ?

5a. Does the software have to convert WMA and OGG into mp3 first?

5b. Then change the MP3's speed?

5c. Or does it convert & speed up, at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

Tereza Tomcova Hello fran harter,

1. 4 minutes long mp3 file is processed in approximately 30 seconds, so 4-hour audio book should be processed in 30 minutes. However this depends on the quality settings. Note that if you have audio book on CD, you will have to convert it to mp3 first (or to another audio format).

2. Yes, you can use any supported format and convert it "1 to 1" to mp3. (Just set the tempo to 100%.)

3. You can set the speed from 50% to 400% of the original speed. (50% means slowing the audio by half, 400% means speeding it up 4 times.)

4. Yes, it should be about the same, see question #5.

5. Internally, file is converted into WAV, then the speed is changed, then it's converted into MP3. (The result file is always MP3 regardless of what the source file is.)

Best regards

t p Just downloaded and used a trial, converted 24kbit 22Khz files at 150% and used lowest quality available which was 32kbit 44Khz and ended up with 11% bigger files, was hoping to match same settings either automatically or by finidng 24/22 in your selection. What are your plans in this regard? Thanks, answers might influence whether I buy.

Tereza Tomcova Hello,

Thank you for your suggestion.
I have released new version (2.84), that supports bitrates of 8, 16, and 24 kbit. You can download it by clicking the Download button on this page.

Also, I plan to add "Same as source file" option which will use the same bitrate and sample rate as the source file.

Best regards

t p That worked perfectly, thanks. This time I took a 56/24 file and created a 24/22 at 150% and it reduced the size by more than 70%! I'll be buying this momentarily, thanks for adding that feature, I wish Google and M$ supported their products as you do yours.

One observation, it's not a complaint at this time: My file had a ID3v2 tag no ID3v1 , your resulting file had ID3v1 no ID3v2 tag, depending on the file truncation could happen here. Something to think about but like I said currently not a biggie. (Curiously also, I had no genre but your file had 'Blues'...)

I don't know yet, but this could be huge for me. I have a 10 CD instructional set to go through and one of the speakers is SLOWWWW. Plus yesterday's test was a 5 hour radio show, most of the time it was OK, but it was hard to understand when people started talking over each other. Not a problem with the product, I might need to slow it down a bit.

Tereza Tomcova I'm glad you like it.

I know about the ID3v2 issue. I plan to fix it, but it's more complicated than adding a few bitrates, so it won't be that soon. :)

t p Not even a medium issue, everything works fine so far. Excellent piece of SW!

Believe it or not, I have wanted this kind of technology for about 30 years since I read in Popular Science (I think) about the benefits of speeding up playback with same pitch. I think the cassette device was too expensive, and the only media I had at the time was music, so it was useless for that.

What are the chances of getting a real-time player with this feature?
Aug 2 2009 at 8:41am Copy Link
Tereza Tomcova There are many players that can speed up audio in real-time, e.g Windows Media Player or Winamp with PaceMaker plugin.

MP3 Speed Changer allows you to change the speed of MP3 files, so you can listen to them with the changed speed on all MP3 players, even the ones without the support to change playback speed (e.g. majority of portable players).
