SoftCollector One of the top pdf solutions. The downside: a little pricey (even with the discount). I own a competitor product Foxit PDF and they allow 3 installations on owned computers. How many installations does Nitro allow per license?

JimR Looks like 2 ...The Fine Print"Nitro Pro 9 is licensed per user, so if more people are going to use Nitro Pro 9 you will need to purchase additional copies.
Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop.
Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.
Online license activation is required with a hardware footprint, and 2 installations per footprint. what's this?

peter schleifer License would be ok with me, two computers, and hopefully possible transfer if one of them gives up his life (they are both old), i.e. without having to de-install first (which would then possibly not be possible anymore).

Price: there are many comments on Nitro, on bits, most of them saying, too expensive, or then, upgrades too expensive. Of course, compared with Acrobat Pro... (and which is NOT that good after all...)...

Service/Reliability: here from bits: "As you all can see, they don't even answer my question." and "I would also comment on Nitro's support. They are good in the sense that they respond in a timely manner. But I have been told to uninstall and reinstall this application at least two dozen times ... and they provide no way to migrate forward all the settings and customizations I create. So every reinstall is a TOTAL do-over." - Now my question would be, for what reason ANY program should ever be re-installed, let alone "two dozen times"? Is Nitro that buggy? Or was it, in a previous version? Has this been overcome, so it isn't a problem anymore?

Also, on CNet.com, again: Somebody complains that Nitro 7 (so this is the pre-previous version, and the question arises if the problem has been resolved since?) choked with a "big" 60 page document; well, 60 pages would not be that "big", I regularly do documents of several hundred pages without the respective tool choking over it, but both tools I use are old respectively not that good, functionality-wise.

Now after all these negative points, but which possibly do not exist anymore, there seems to be one really splendid function in Nitro 9, from the manual:

It SEEMS that it MIGHT be able to let you choose WHICH MS Word headings it will process for the pdf booksmark which are needed for automated filling-up the navigation pane (for any pdf viewer).

In the manual, this subject is treated in the Word/MS Office, and in the "Automating bookmarks" chapters, near the beginning, and near the end of the manual, but I'm not sure of the integration of these functionalities?

In other words, and put as a simple question: When I create a pdf in Nitro 9, from Word (any version, 2003 to 2010, or even in 2013 which is of no interest to me, but the "old" version 2003 is!), am I able to tell Nitro to just create bookmarks for Word headings "title1", "title2" and "title3", but NOT for "title4" and further down?

If the answer is "yes", and if version 9 is stable even with "big" files, I would say Nitro has got a unique feature there which will be of tremendous help to anybody creating pdf's, with navigation panes, for the web.

(I know I could find out by myself, by installing the trial, but if the result is negative, I would not be able to install Nitro 10 for further trialling, anytime after, so I refrain from too much trialling - I know I have to look into "sandboxing" or such for such effect, but for the time being, I rely on developers' answering my questions. I don't know any other pdf creation software that would be able to do SELECTIVE pdf bookmark creation, from Word headings, so this would be something of highest interest. (In Acrobat Pro, you can do it with paid add-ins, or with JavaScript scripting, the special manual for that comprising 800 pages... which clearly shows the interst of Nitro if this is possible here.))

Bertie Brummel Vers. 9 is the 2nd major release in 9 months, The few new features are not very important IMHO. If one wants to stay updated, Nitro is very expensive.

Mappi75 One Question to the german language version of Nitro Pro 9:

is this version number every time "behind" the english language version?

For example:

the english version is 9.3.xx and the german version would be 9.2.xx
because of the german language translation ?

I'am asking because i am a Foxit PDF Phantom user and there is this problem too - so i decided to choose the english language version (because its more up-to-date)

Cary Adams I have v9. If you're an v8.5 user, the upgrade isn't compelling unless you team edit your pdfs. Yes, it's pricey... a 50% discount would have been more appropriate. In contrast to Adobe though, this is a great deal.

Tech support is responsive, and Nitro is always looking for ways to improve the product with new features. I like it a lot.

peter schleifer Of course, you can have the same effect as described above with any such software, incl. this one, if you just format headings 1, 2, and 3 as Word styles, and then further down you replace styles with dumb formatting before running the export. In contrast to Adobe, anything is a great deal, right?

VLM The features page says "Fresh look. New features." I have Nitro Pro 8.5 installed, and I am reluctant to install a demo 9 over it. So I'll just ask ... has anything been done to restore normal, old-fashioned menus? Or is the UI still based upon ribbons?

Also, has any improvement been made to user-controlled shortcuts? For example, is it now possible, in the "fresh look", to create nested shortcuts (the kind that are common in a menu-driven UI)?

Everyone, this IS a good program. Personally, I don't find the v. 9 features (that I've seen so far) a compelling reason to upgrade from v8, which, as Bertie Brummel points out above, was released less than a year ago. IMO, it does little good to offer a "reasonable price" for a product, if that product becomes obsoleted with such frequency.

I find some of the features a bit awkward to use, but that's been the case in every PDF software I've tried. The support is timely, but as one author above mentions, they really do suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the program at times; I am aware of no other company that does so (anymore). And last time I checked (which was admittedly some time ago), a reinstall of the program meant a complete, manual reconfiguration of the program; there was no way to carry forward a configuration.

I would feel grateful if someone from Nitro might comment upon a few of these items.

SoftCollector Well, this one and Foxit were on my shortlist when I decided to buy a pdf editor. For one reason or another, I finally chose Foxit. However, Foxit also gives you 3 installations, not two, so this is also sth to consider.

Tom I am still somewhat confused how this offer relates to nitro pdf reader - I tried to look up the details on the website but apart from being shown constant offers for the pro version, the faq is somewhat limited. I am already using reader - is this the same software but with more features or will I have to run both programs in future? What is the main advantage of the pro version compared to the free reader?

peter schleifer Paolo S., thank you very much, I will "trial" Nitro Reader; up to now, I did not try too many alternatives to the Free Adobe thing (I once tried Foxit Reader, but was not overwhelmed).

As for the video, it does not show it in fact; they have one "export from Word" function, and which will translate the / all (!) the different Word styles into pdf bookmarks; almost any paid program has this. AND they have a special function which will create bookmarks from various elements, and which is described near the end of the manual; here, you can choose the elements from which it is to create bookmarks, and leave out others - this seems quite unique indeed.

(You can even create bookmarks from special characters, but Nitro does not have a global-replace function either (the competition is not any better it has to be said, or did I miss one competitor that does it?), so the question arises how, after creating the booksmarks from it, you will then get rid of all those special characters that only served for permitting the bookmark creation.)

But the question remains if this can be combined with the "bookmarks from Word styles" function, i.e. if the Nitro Word export will permit you to choose from WHICH styles you will create bookmarks, and I have my doubts.

And then, I prefer buying from vendors who do not let prospects alone among fellow prospects, whilst on the other hand, videos like the above are slick and smart, but more "marketing"-oriented than I really need software development to be - for me, technical finesse is something I'm in high respect of, but then, finesse meaning you do things thoroughly. The manual is without (many) screenshots, and screenshots would often be of real help there. Videos are a good thing for marketing purposes, but the immediate relationship to the the details in the manual can sparcely be attained with them.

But as said, I'll trial some more viewers, and if the Nitro one is really good, that will be a positive factor in my further buying decisions. But I'm not a "software collector"; before I buy, I want it to be special in a way which is really useful for me.

I got Abbyy Pdf Transformer here, for free, some weeks ago, and whilst reviews of it say, not without reason, that it has not much sophistication, I'm extremely pleased with it, so much in fact that it has replaced my (not entirely new) Adobe Prof. version in my everyday use. So now I'm very much inclined to buy from Abbyy (which will bring out a more sophisticated version soon), even when the competition offers more functionality (but which might not be of big use for me).

If the developers/marketing people here had come over with a hint to my question, I would probably have bought this not-so-cheap program, now I don't see the immediate necessity to do so, in the light of the above.

In fact, I do my writing in outliners (I own several of those that are regularly on offer here), and I then use Word as the "middleman" in order to then get to 2-column pdfs for the web, so I create Word styles by scripting, and as said, and even if this might appear not entirely believable, the not-so-well-considered Abbyy Transformer is as good as Acrobat Pro for what I want (and which includes, as said, web publishing with navigation pane, automated creation of the tree, and 2-column layout.

For people who did not get it for free, you can get it for really cheap at this time, and I highly recommend it. Since it integrates perfectly into my not-so-basic workflow, it will probably integrate in yours, too, to your satisfaction.

I don't need smart marketing guys who even before buying treat me like... you know what I mean.

Thank you very much again, Paolo, some sharing of knowledge and giving hints is always a good idea, and I also would like to say I'm very positively astonished that the bit staff permits open words, as long as we try to be fair and constructive, and this even when it's evident here and there that with lesser info here, they would make more sales. I greatly appreciate this professional attitude.

Gabriel Zastawnik One of the best PDF software ever. But its authors tend to change versions so quickly. This leads to constant "taking money out of my pocket" beacuse upgrade price is not so low. But like I said - this is a very good software. But I will stay with my version 8 until the cost of the upgrade drop.

Cary Adams Not sure why Nitro has no presence here... Here's my experience FWIW...

@Tom Michael... Nitro Pro is fully separate from Nitro Reader. With Pro, you can uninstall Reader.

@Paolo S... There's quite a difference between Nitro Pro and Nitro Reader. Here's a Reader comparsion with Pro version 8:

@VLM... You can install v9 alongside v8 (obviously choose an alternate install folder, or use Sandboxie).

@Harlen Wiebe... you can not drag and insert a pdf into an open pdf, but you can insert pages by selecting the second pdf through an explorer window. You can use this technique to replace pages as well.

FWIW, Nitro's "Black Friday" discount is 25% in the U.S., so this discount is somewhat better.

peter schleifer Just for the fun of it, let me say that Acrobat upgrade in the U.S. is about 200 dollars (and "only" about 170 dollars for some time currently), so 55 dollars upgrade is more than reasonable, let's say all 18 months or so.

"Software assurance" only sometimes means an "assurance against" upgrades for a certain duration of time, but on such payment sites, more often than not it means you'll buy one single download link (i.e. not a key to enter into the trial instead), and if you happen to destroy it in some way (instead of copying the software then, before trying to install it, to some backup medium), you'll get another link to download anew instead of them saying, "not our problem, just buy it a second time". Problem here, most of the time, such assurance is often just for some days/weeks/months. Put the downloaded file onto a stick or external hdd instead, and don't touch those backups for installing means (but only, in case, to copy the file).

Cary, I think the "create a pdf from various sources" functionality of a pdf creator is a very important function, so it's very important if that workflow is smooth and without problems, or awkward, so you mentioned an important criterion for choosing the right software. Let me add another one (except for reliability mentioned above): File size! I have read somebody who pretends in one program he got pdf file sizes tenfold the size of the pdf created in another program, from the same source material - he didn't mention the programs in question, but this might not be entirely unbelievable since I have got a similar effect with pics imported into content panes of different text processors / outliners, and thus it appears possible that varied pdf's created from "difficult" sources, pics, let alone vids and audios, might have exploding file sizes in some progs, and not in others.

On a more simple level, I can report that a pdf file (just from text) which was almost 1.3 million when created from Acrobat, wasn't but 1.05 million when created with Abbyy, and quality was identical.

So there is much room to do a real comparison of all of them, by many criteria of more or less significance, but such a comparison cannot be found in the web at this point in time yet.

Cary Adams @Mappi75... AFAIK there is no option to revert from ribbon mode. You can minimize the ribbon, as well as modify the quick access toolbar—but there is no apparent "Classic Mode" option.

If I'm mistaken, please let me know how it is accessed.
