What are people saying about NSB/AppStudio

Michael R. Does this tool also create .exe-files for windows itself?

Has it a source-level-debugger included?

Is C/C++ in a coming time about to be used as a (third) programming language?

Can you already point out some major improvements of v5?
Mar 7 2015 at 8:54am Copy Link
0
George Henne AppStudio can create desktop apps as Chrome Packaged Apps.
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/M...App_Studio

For debugging, the Chrome Debugger works well:
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/U...e_Debugger

No plans for C/C++.

We're not talking about what is in AppStudio 5 just yet.

How does that inflict NSB AppStudio?

George Henne Haven't heard this, and I can't find anything recent on the web about this. What did you see?

Chrome is one of the most important assets of Google: they want it running everywhere.

peter anon I wish it wasn't so dependent on Adobe PhoneGap to compile mobile apps, but I bought it anyway.

Playing with the demo, it seemed pretty slick.

I hadn't realised it made Window's EXE and that you could ftp to your own server (html5 ?) so that was a nice surprise ;-)

@bits the checkout was still sticky - a page refresh to get the paypal button to appear at all and then a back button after payment , to get the paypal IPN to kick in.
I'm not sure why you don't get that fixed?

See http://wiki.nsbasic.com/Version_5
Go to last section "Breaking Changes" and it explain why XP and Vista is no longer supported, due to IE 11's minimum requirements.
Hope that helps.

George Henne AppStudio Support here. We can confirm that XP and Vista are not supported - Microsoft no longer supports those operating systems with IE11.

We'll work with anyone who bought AppStudio and is affected by this to straighten things out. Let us know!

Robert Crombie I just purchased this.
I use XP 98% of the time, so I will have to get my act together and set up a W7 or W10 PC, to install this there. Which would you recommend ?

And it may take a while for me to stabilize that PC (Imaging/restoring the OS).
To not wear out my allowed number of installs, should I install the demo for a while ? (not enter the license key).
The demo appears to be close enough to fully functional for my early training days. AND if I have to dump my OS (reinstall or revert to an earlier image), I have not used up my install attempts.
What do you reckon about that theory ?

Rob
PS I am a long time VB6 developer, but have no App or web or Apple Store experience, so I was dreading the learning curve for app development.
The many testimonials affirm that what you have is a breeze compared to previous approaches.
GOOD ON YOU

George Henne Thanks for the kind words!

Windows 7 and Windows 10 work equally well for AppStudio. Personally, I'd go for Windows 10 - all the new stuff will work on it.

Don't worry about multiple installs off AppStudio - it's fine so long as you are the one using AppStudio.

Robert Crombie I will see if I can fix the slight flakiness in the W10 drive, and use that
(Was an OEM W7 that I upgraded).

It is a relief that I can hack around without using up my installs

Thanks George,
Rob
PS More kind words -
The many testimonials also affirm that you are extremely responsive to queries and support requests.
(I added this, in the off chance that BitsDuJour carry forward the comments, if they offer your program discounted in the future)

George Henne How so?

We've made almost 300 changes to AppStudio 5 since it came out, implementing new features in HTML5 as the become available, as well as things the devices can do.

If there's something you're looking for, let us know. There's a good chance it will show up in an update.

Dan Amiel In the meantime, i downloaded and installed the demo.
Strangely, it asked me to install IE 11. As i run Win7 and never use IE because it would create compatibility problems on my system, i won't be able to buy your software if IE11 must be installed.
May 9 2016 at 6:01pm Copy Link
0
George Henne We use IE11 for the drag and drop Design Screen. It's the most compatible and reliable browser for embedding. You don't have to use it for any other purpose, so the rest of your system will run as usual.

All testing will be done using your favorite browser (Chrome is good, since it is the native browser on Android.)

Dan Amiel As i said, i tried to upgrade from IE10 to IE11 and i had to rollback because of incompatibilities with other parts of my system. Will AppStudio work with lower versions of IE ?
May 9 2016 at 9:01pm Copy Link

George Henne IE11 is required. Microsoft has come a long way with their browser technology. In IE11, they finally added support a lot of the new HTML5 features.

May 10 2016 at 5:59am Copy Link

1) Is there a way to code the web app so that user can only run the web app in mobile devices and not PC? For example, if the user try to run the web app in their pc, they are redirected to the home page or something. Any demo on this function?

1
Is it easy to create an app with small gif animations that run everytime I click my finger on it ? ( I find readymade gifs online and just paste the code somehow).

2
Then I would also like to have a counter showing how many times I have clicked the gif.

3
Every click should also vibrate.

Could you answer asap because then I might buy tonight, thanks.
May 10 2016 at 11:53pm Copy Link
0
George Henne 1. You can do this by checking the navigator.userAgent string, which identifies the operating system and browser. More here:
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/Navigator

2. PhoneGap Build is an online system to make native apps. It usually takes about a minute, but can be longer at peak times.
You can also build locally on your system using the PhoneGap CLI, but it is much more complex to install and use. Docs are on our Wiki and on the PhoneGap site.

George Henne If you've never programmed, you have some learning to do. It's worthwhile! There are a number of tutorials and courses here:
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/T...nd_Courses

Demo not running: this is extremely unusual. Email me directly at supportnsbasic.com and we'll diagnose what's happening.

1. Yes, it's easy to add images to a project. To do what you want, you'll have a button with a frame from the gif. When clicked, it hides and the actual gif is displayed at the same position on the screen.

2. To do a counter, you'll have code like this:
Image1.onclick = function() {
counter = counter + 1;
}
Or, in BASIC,
Function Image1_onclick()
counter = counter + 1
End Function

3. To vibrate, use this statement:
navigator.vibrate(500)
This causes the device vibrate for half a second. (Android only).

Petr Is AppStudio an open source software development platform? I am concerned about being locked in.

On your website, your FAQ states the product price is $99. So do we get an actual discount when it becomes available via BitsDuJour?
Dec 13 2016 at 9:25am Copy Link
0
George Henne AppStudio produces standard HTML and JavaScript files, which can be used by other tools and editors.

The FAQ was incorrect - it should have read $199. It has been corrected. Thanks for spotting this!
NSB Corporation - Dec 13 2016 at 9:35am Copy Link
0
Petr @George, thanks for the reply. I understand AppStudio outputs Javascript and HTML.

The reason I asked about AppStudio being open-source is to avert lock-in in case your company fails to update the AppStudio to keep it current, or in the event I want to extend it's capabilities. I find many of these app-generators have limits, which a developer doesn't discover until it's too late. I hate to get painted into a corner. Unless I can have access to the code generation templates and other aspects of such software, it will trap me eventually. This is the real question I need answered. Thx.
Dec 13 2016 at 11:34pm Copy Link
0
George Henne The code generation templates are all open - you can modify them or add new templates as needed. Your modified templates sit in their own directory, so new updates of AppStudio won't wipe your work out.

NSB has been making dev tools since 1994. AppStudio was released 6 years ago and had been steadily improved and updated ever since.
NSB Corporation - Dec 14 2016 at 3:14am Copy Link
0
Stefan Hauber Since new versions of AppStudio are published quite often, what is your price policy about upgrades?

What is the standard upgrade-discount? Are there special events (like this), where greater discounts are given and which applý to upgrading too? Is there a special condition for being able to upgrade to the newest version, e.g. having one of the last two versions of AppStudio?

If you can't say for the future, what is e.g. the upgrade price for v6?
Dec 14 2016 at 7:38am Copy Link
0
George Henne New versions have been generally more that a year apart. So far, they've always been priced at $49.95. Since AppStudio 6 was just released, it will be a while before the next release. Of course, we make steady point releases through the major release.

Charging for a new release gives us the resources to great new stuff - it's also makes sure we do the things our users want.
NSB Corporation - Dec 14 2016 at 8:25am Copy Link
0
Petr Hi George, Excellent that you have editable templates. Your upgrade price at $49 seems reasonable too. Some further questions please:

Q1: Can I incorporate 3rd party JavaScript libraries into the templates?

Q2: What do the templates look like? Is there some place I can review documentation and video tutorials before purchasing?

Q3: Can you compare your product to AlphaAnyhere, which is a competitor?
Dec 14 2016 at 9:48am Copy Link
0
George Henne Q1. Yes, a number of them do this already.

Q2. The templates live in the Toolbox folder in the AppStudio install folder. They're in JSON, so they are easy to look at and edit. Here are the docs on them:
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/ToolBox_Files

Q3. Wow! AlphaAnywhere is $2500/yr if you want to use PhoneGap. No native Mac support?
NSB Corporation - Dec 14 2016 at 12:07pm Copy Link
0
Petr Thank to George,
I took a quick look at your template reference url. It seems your template only allow to define controls, not app logic, database connections, ability to connect to existing databases.... Please correct me if I am mistaken.

The AlphaAnywhere solution is a total solution for building apps with local storage or server-side storage and even hybrid storage that updates the server once an Internet connection has been re-established (if lost). The $1200 level is sufficient for my needs. But, I'm hoping your development system's templates are sufficiently flexible to allow building complete database apps.

Please direct me to further info, videos or tutorials... I am serious about evaluationg your product offering. Thank you.

Stefan Hauber @Geroge: Thanks for the answer. I agress, that 25% of the original price for an upgrade is a fair price. Is this also the upgrade price for ANY former version, e.g. v3 too?
Dec 15 2016 at 12:09am Copy Link

George Henne Stefan,

Yes, that is the upgrade price for all previous versions.
NSB Corporation - Dec 15 2016 at 2:53am Copy Link

George Henne Petr,

LocalStorage has always been there. Server side/Hybrid storage can be done using DropBox. It is also being rolled out as part of Volt. Volt is our solution for providing simple hosting and services for web and mobile apps.

We don't provide templates for database access. Local databases (SQLite) are easily accessed directly by JavaScript. Volt will have APIs to access desktop databases in the future.

Terry User Hi George,

I have version 5.2.1.3 Developer. While checking for updates a couple months ago, I thought I saw that you were moving to a subscription based model. I don't buy subscription software, so I hadn't checked again. And I can't remember where I found that information.

However, reading comments here and looking again at your site, it looks like it's still 'purchase once - use forever'. If that's definitely the case, I'll be upgrading to 6. It's a great program/utility, and a $50 major version upgrade is very reasonable.

Can you confirm this is the case? No subscription? Thanks...

It comes with a free 4 month subscription to our new Volt cloud service. If you don't want to use Volt after the four months, AppStudio will still work fine.

Volt adds a number of new cloud based features which AppStudio apps can make use of.

Dexter Bell "Q3. Wow! AlphaAnywhere is $2500/yr if you want to use PhoneGap. No native Mac support?"

I know nothing of NSB/AppStudio it is probably an excellent product. But there are other alternatives for PhoneGap development. I originally used Adobe's implementation but eventually found it rather limiting.

VS 2015 Community edition is free and incredibly powerful - especially useful for developing large applications for iOS, Android, Windows 8, Windows Phone and more. But you do need to also have an HTML editor for best results, I use Dreamweaver, the old Microsoft Expression Web (free now), and a plain text editor depending on the type of HTML file I'm editing (some of my HTML pages for the applications are over 5MB in raw form which break must wiziwig editors.)

I'm always interested in new approaches to cross platform development so I'll be downloading NSB/AppStudio too and see how it goes.

Just an FYI which you may already know,
Dexter

George Henne The whole field of web app development is really fragmented. What we've tried to create is a curated stack which gives the developer everything needed in one install, with all the parts nicely integrated.

The HTML part is handled by a Design Screen, sort of like how VS would approach it. Drag and drop the elements to add them to the page, then integrate the code to go with it. It then generates the HTML, CSS and JavaScript modules, which can then be deployed a number of ways.

Be sure and send us your impressions!

Dexter Bell @George,
Thanks for the great reply. Yes it really is fragmented with a one solution fits all, at least as far as I've seen, is still elusive. But then that isn't bad - it is still elusive for developing Windows desktop apps too.:-)

If you don't mind I'll contact you off-line with a brief description of what I'm doing and see if it fits with what you have. For instance one of the problems I'm looking to find a solution for is the ability to publish forty plus apps that have a lot of code in common (and some that is not in common) but all the text data is different. I can obviously do it but I'm looking for the most efficient ways to do it. (Think of 37 plays by Shakespeare and a few more by other Elizabethan/Jacobean dramatists each containing a minimum of four versions of the play.)

For some reason I'm now reminded of something a high-school teacher told me back in the '60s, "Never start vast projects with half-vast ideas!" I should have listened.

More directly to you in a week or so,
Dexter

PS: it is really nice to see a vendor actually be responsive to questions while they have the products up for sale.

Petr @George, Thanks for the reference to What's In The Stack. That's helpful.
Looking at your JavaScript tutorial, it looks like starting a new project required selecting a Form Size with options from iPhone 320x460 all the way up to Fire, Nook, Playbook at 1024x748.

My question is about best practice for developing just one App Form size and having it work on any mobile device. How do apps scale for varying display sizes?

When I develop web pages, I can specify different behaviors depending upon the current user's display size. For example, use different sized images, text and omit certain components for small form factors. How is this done with your development system? The idea is to write the app once and have it be viable on any mobile device. Of course there are minimums, so I wouldn't expect my app to work on a watch sized display. Thx.

Is there a minimum-version of android necessary to use (all modules of) AppStudio?

Recently I read, GoogleMaps is given free for Game-Developers. Will this than be usable with AppStudio (in the current v6) too?

Perhaps you also have references how to use navigation with AppStudio!?

Dexter Bell Looks interesting for some side projects I'd like to do...

But while looking at your website I found a page which says that with the arrival of V6 you have moved to the subscription model rather than a one-time license fee. So,

1) If that is correct what is the difference from this offer?
2) If the answer involves using you server what does that add to the package (or detract from the project if it is not subscribed to)?
3) If the one-time license fee is still available, will it continue to be available in the future or will it be phased out?

One other quickie, does the program allow access to the normal javascript Regular Expression engine or, more generally, is the JA engine based on Chrome's V8 engine?

Thanks,
Dexter

There is no minimum version of Android to use with AppStudio. However, we recommend you use a version of Android which supports the Chrome browser (not just the old Android browser). There are are few devices left which do not support Chrome.

GoogleMaps is usable with AppStudio. In general, if it can be done using JavaScript, you can do it in AppStudio.

Can you clarify what you mean by navigation?

George Henne Dexter Bell:

1. We support both a subscription and one time fee model. The subscription is $15/month and included upgrades. The one time fee gets you the current version: if there is a major update, you'll need to pay a discounted amount to upgrade.

2. The one time fee gives you access to the server if you're on the current version.

3. We periodically adjust pricing depending on market forces - it's impossible to make a commitment on future pricing.

extra: Yes, the Regex engine works fine. When running on Chrome and Windows, the V8 engine is used. On iOS and Mac, the Safari engine is used.

Jim Hampton The trial is a little annoying, just doing a basic msgbox test and when i hit F5 i get directed to your website to register it, really?

Also, it's not obvious, but can this do any type of database work? It's also not obvious if you can print to a file (Print #1 etc).

This has a very VB6 feel to, which i really like, but
Mar 21 2018 at 3:08pm Copy Link
0
George Henne Unless you've changed the options, F5 starts the app in the local browser. The Run menu has other options, such as Deploy to Volt, which is probably what you are seeing. In that mode, your app is deployed to a web server, so you can download it to a device.

The signon screen has the option of "I'd like to continue using the demo", where no signon is needed.

AppStudio lets you using SQLite for database work:
http://wiki.nsbasic.com/Using_SQLite

To save simple data, use localStorage (it's in the wiki too). You're not allowed to create actual files: that violates OS security. You can probably understand why apps you download from the internet might be a bit dangerous in that regard. :-)

Yes, you will be able to deploy to the desktop, iOS and Android.

The subscription gives you a couple of handy cloud based features:
- Volt, which gives you a place to host your apps, in case you don’t have your own server
- VoltBuilder, a cloud service which takes over the job of making native apps for Android and iOS. Think PhoneGap, but up to date and maintained.

CFGuy George- thanks for getting back to me regarding my question on the "push notifications". Help me understand this issue a little better, if you don't mind. If I were to design an app in which a reminder would be sent to the user if a certain pre-programmed event (such as a certain time is reached (as a "reminder" function), or perhaps an event occurs) and it then pops up a notification message on the app user's phone or tablet, I had herd it is called a "push notification" (or am I "overgeneralizing" here?) Does your program have the ability to send such notifications, and if so, what are some reasons that an app programmer would need to utilize any "push notification services" (other than what your program already supplies)? I realize there's probably a learning curve involved in app programming, but it is something that has interested me for a while now, and your program sounds very promising and with today's discount, very reasonably priced. Thanks so much for all of your help and advice.

If so, if I were to use "NSB/AppStudio" "Essential Edition" to design an app that sends purchasers/users of the app notifications such as my mother receives every x number of hours to open my app and preform a function or check-in, am I able to send an unlimited number of such notifications to app purchasers/users, or are there restrictions or limitations to such a function?
