NegoDan It's the easy way using above app. to do the job and the less easy way to convert NTFS partition to FAT32 without purchasing 3rd-party programs or re-formatting the partition, for Windows provides this function. Click Start, type "cmd" in the search box, press Enter, type "convert F: /FS:NTFS" in the command prompt, press Enter. (NOTE: this method is irreversible unless you format your partition.)
When converting NTFS to FAT32, you have only two methods. One is to format your NTFS partition. If there is enough free disk space in other partitions, you can copy data to free space and then format the NTFS partition to FAT32. After you reformat your previous NTFS partition to FAT32 partition, you can copy the data back. In addition, you can back up the blank FAT partition to an image file, then it's convenient for you to convert partition format next time(article was inspired from EaseUS tech. resources). And the other way is to use a third party NTFS to FAT32 converter, like the one bitsdujour.com intends to bring soon for all of us: NTFS to FAT32 Wizard!

cyanic What's the advantage to converting NTFS to FAT32? With FAT32 you have the max 4GB/file cap, some weird restriction on the number of file system entries per directory, and loss of ACL. The only popular OS that doesn't support NTFS out of the box right now is Mac OS X, which can gain support by installing NTFS-3G or similar drivers. Most Linux distros have native support for NTFS, and of course NTFS originated with Windows. For portable devices that must use FAT32, you wouldn't have NTFS on it in the first place. So what compelling reasons are there to convert? What, downgrading to Windows 98?

Daniel . ^Well those drive/devices would be formatted in fat32 by default one would think.

Like others, I don't see the point of this, sorry.

James K Yukai Li,

Data Recovery from a crashed system, when you don't have another NTFS readable OS, but you DO have an old Windows 98 disk you can boot from, or an old W98 computer you can use.

It's really a tool that was needed from the time that NTFS was first implemented in Windows NT. I've lost data because of such situations, and so never willingly used NTFS until Windows 7.

cyanic @Daniel To use this software you need an NTFS capable version of Windows (i.e. Windows 4.x is not listed in the supported operating systems). So if you have to use the program on an NTFS capable OS, why can't you get your data with said OS in the first place? Also, isn't it less risky to mount the volume as read only on any recent Linux live CD you can burn in no time rather than risking total conversion forward and back?

BTW, losing ACL info from the file system is a major problem. That happened to me with a recent restore from a backup software that didn't record any metadata, and the end result is parts of Windows won't work correctly. If you decide to convert to FAT, then convert back to NTFS, this will happen.
