What are people saying about Paperless

Danny I am currently using Paperport Pro of Nuance, but am not really satisfied with it and it is an expensive joke with that upgrade prices. Is this maybe something for me?

Mariner Software Absolutely Danny. We have a ton of customers that have come from Paperport and seem to be having better success. As with everything, all scenarios are different so we highly encourage folks to try out a trial copy or check out our online video tutorials to make sure the product is what they are looking for. You can check out the videos here...

Brian H Hi Mike, Like Danny (above) I am a "Paperport Pro" user, as well; who would be interested in perhaps making a switch over to your product. I have a few questions about the product and offer that I would appreciate your input on. First, regarding product "activation". Many of us here on BDJ are techies who like to upgrade, build or purchase new components and systems more frequently than the average software user, and product activation can be known to cause some headaches. Is the activation hardware or software based? If we do switch over to a new system at some point after purchase, is it possible to have activations "added" to our account (as long as this is not abused, of course)? Second (and related) is the statement under "Fine Print" tab "You must install/register the software within 15 days, and cannot do so afterwards." Why the "15 day" restriction? Again, if I were at a point where I was unhappy with my current system and planning on building a new one in the near future, this restriction would be looked at as a bit of a "deal breaker" by someone in my situation- which would be a shame because your product and price-point are both very good! If you wouldn't mind addressing these issues, when you have a chance, I would really appreciate it. Thanks. -Brian

Mariner Software Hey Brian -
Teresa here from Mariner. Thanks for your interest in Paperless. A few things to note: our trial versions, which allow you to use all the features without constraint, is good for 30 days. You can download a trial version at any time from our website. Just go to: https://www.marinersoftwa.../download/ for more information.

As far as activation and license information, our support team will be glad to address your specific questions. You can submit any in depth queries here: http://marinersoftware.deskpro.com/

The "install/register within 15 days" was merely to help customers register Paperless before the 30 day period ends so that they won't find themselves suddenly unable to access any records they may have added to Paperless. I have edited the 'Fine Print' though, as to not discourage anyone from trying Paperless.

I trust this will help you. We also feel that Paperless is a great product and at a great price.

Kind regards,
teresa

Edward Smith Just curious why the trial is an almost 45 meg download when the size of the paid version of what appears to be the exact same product on a different (but popular) web site is 23mb (or at least that is what it says on the other web site)?

William Smith Jr How long before we receive an order confirmation from Mariner software as I have yet to receive one. Additionally, it appears an EStore account was automatically created for me yet I can't change my password (telling me new password is same as old, which makes no sense since I didn't set an initial password). The system is also not allowing me to register my serial number -- telling me it's invalid

Mariner Software Edward-
That sounds like the difference between download size of the Mac and Win versions. Win is 44MB, Mac is 24 MB. The apps are nearly identical so I assume that must be the difference of the Mac download being a compressed DMG and the Win isn't. I can ask our developers if you would like me to.

William - Let me check into your issue. The email confirmation receipt is an automatic email that occurs immediately after you place your order. Sometimes they end up in a spam folder - have you checked there?

Jim McGowan Hello Teresa and Mike.

Yet another disappointed Paperport Pro user here. :(

The product sounds good, and unless there is a problem discovered here today I will likely be making the purchase.

Like someone above mentioned, I am also wary of activation schemes; I reinstall my Windows OS once or twice a year (due to installing and removing lots of software!), and I also switch out hardware fairly often; or at least more often than your average bear - HDDs, serial buses, graphics cards, etc. As long as your activation server is pretty ironclad and you will be around for a long time that isn't a problem.

The 15 day "must register" rule is still listed on the Fine Print tab; does that mean if I make the purchase and don’t manage to get it installed within 15 days, my license will be invalid and thus void? I still fail to see the wisdom in that. I would think that would only apply to trial versions. Can you please clarify?

Finally, when files are imported into Paperless are separate copies made? Or are the original files moved into a new Paperless directory? Or are links to the originals placed in a new Paperless directory? I ask this because I have seen all three of these methods used by other programs, sometimes done well and sometimes not!

Thank you for your assistance and advice as well as your patience!

Jim McGowan Ouch! I just noticed that you appear to strongly recommend the Fujitsu Scansnap scanner line along with their software.

I have an older Scansnap that I am no longer using; I now use a Canon P-215 document scanner, also called a Scan-tini portable scanner. Your website recommends only the Scansnap line and says we should download and install the trial version before ordering to see if other scanners are compatible. I don’t think that we really have time to do that with a Bits 24-hour deal like this.

Surely you must have some user feedback regarding scanners that you know definitely do and do not work with Paperless! Can you give us scanner compatibility information if you have it? E.g., do you know whether or not the Canon P-215 scanners definitely work with Paperless or not?

BTW, my "retired" Scansnap is an S300 portable and while it still works fine I stopped using it because of their software. The Scansnap Organizer program that was required to work with my Scansnap is a minimally functional program that didn't offer much in the way of organization other than a main folder and multiple subfolders. No "smart" filing or anything similar. Also, there was no capability to import other PDF documents; if you move other PDFs into their folder it will not even read them and it won't allow you to remake the PDFs so that they can be read.

If Paperless works so well with the Scansnap line what impact does that have on imports? Will imported PDFs - created by another software - be unreadable?

Thanks again!

Jim McGowan

Brian H Dear Teresa and the other kind reps from Mariner- Thanks so much for getting back to me and addressing my questions. :-) After reading your explanation to me and a few others here about the "activation process", I am comfortable with this part of the software (should a re-installation ever be needed). Regarding the "15 day mandatory install" issue; I see that under the "Fine Print:" tab it still reads "You must install/register the software within 15 days, and cannot do so afterwards.". I would like to purchase at least 1 (perhaps even 2) copies of this program here on Bits tonight; but I know that I need to either build or buy a new system very soon because my current desktop is making bad noises, despite my taking it apart and doing a thorough fan and inside cleaning. So I would like Mariner's assurance that i would have the option to install any software purchased here on BDJ tonight *after* 15 days (which is probably a likely scenario for me, personally) before I purchase the software. Can you do this for me? Also, I appreciate your making avail;able a fuly-functional 30 day trial version before purchase- it is a great benefit for a potential customer, like myself. However, today is "deal day" and I am in a bit of a "time crunch". Does "Paperless" do basically everything that the current release of "Paperport 14 Pro" does, including the ability to "watch" specific folders and auto-import .pdf files (as the other potential customer asked above)? Not every feature of PP14 Pro is important to me; but it is good to know what features I would have available to me before I make the purchase (I will also check out your product website, as thoroughly as I am able to, before the expiration of the deal tonight). Thanks again for all of your help and doing such a good job of addressing our pre-purchase questions so well. A+. :-) -Brian

Mark Johnson Do you have any list of scanners that the software has been tested with? The only info I see on your site mentions specifically the Fujitsu ScanSnap printer line, and says that potential customers should use a trial version with their printer to ensure compatibility.

The problem I have is that I'm currently on the road, and won't have access to my home scanner for a couple of days. Have you tested on Windows 7 64-bit with any scanners other than Fujitsu ScanSnap (in my case specifically the Canon MX922)? The scanner works fine (wireless) through the MP Navigator EX software using 'Save to pc'.

I already took a look at your knowledgebase and found nothing on the topic of scanner compatibility there, and in your forums over 99% of the posts are for the Mac product and no compatibility info for Windows that I can find.

Thanks!

Mariner Software Jim McGown -

Teresa here, I hope I can address your concerns:

First the activation issue - the "15 day" aspect had been edited but apparently did not update, so, my apologies. Paperless will download as a full-working trial version, good for 30 days. The serial/license number is needed to use all the features beyond 30 days. If you rebuild or buy a new system and need to reinstall Paperless, the process to do so is pretty linear and you won't encounter any issues.

To answer this question:

"Finally, when files are imported into Paperless are separate copies made? Or are the original files moved into a new Paperless directory? Or are links to the originals placed in a new Paperless directory?"

The short answer is that Paperless makes separate copies. It doesn't move files, and it doesn't link to files outside of the library file. If you would like more information, you can always visit our website and view the knowledgebase:
https://marinersoftware.d...or-windows

As far as our recommendation of the ScanSnaps - they work the best with Paperless (as a matter of fact, I have an S300M and use it daily with Paperless - the Mac version - and it works just great!) As far as whether Paperless works with a Canon PF 215, it should be possible to import from it as long as you are able to import from the scanner to a point on your hard drive and as long as the manufacturer supports using this specific model of scanner under the specific release of Windows you're using.

You can import PDFs and a lot of other file formats into Paperless. Again, please feel free to visit our knowledgebase, there's a lot of more detailed information there.

I hope I've addressed all your concerns. If not, please let me know.

Best,

teresa

Jim McGowan Mike or Teresa,

One question that wasn’t answered: My Scansnap S300M and its software - that I no longer use - would not support my existing PDF files. Does Paperless follow that same policy?

IOW if I moved PDFs created elsewhere - either by me of just PDF files that were downloaded, e.g., user manuals or PDF ebooks - into my Scansnap folders the Scansnap software would not handle those files. As in it would not rotate pages or make them "readable" files as it does with PDF files that it created. Instead a message popped up saying something like "You cannot do that - This file was not created with Scansnap."

Does Paperless act the same way? Can it work with my existing PDF files? Paperport Pro - and PDF Converter Pro - will work with ANY PDF file I open with them. Same with Paperless?

After all I already have hundreds of PDF files on my computer now and any organizing software I use needs to be able to handle those files equally as well as those it creates. Otherwise I would have to keep multiple software packages on my machine just to be able to do the same things with all my PDF files.

Thank you.

Not sure why you've had trouble getting in touch with support. I will try to get an answer to your issue.

Danny -

Paperless is not supported on Windows XP, meaning, we tested Paperless only on Windows Vista, 7 and 8 and thus, can only provide support for those operating systems. As such, we can't guarantee or troubleshoot how Paperless functions on Windows XP. It may operate just fine but we make no guarantees and should you have issues, we would be unable to assist you.

What it seems likely is happening here is that the demo period has expired (or Paperless thinks the demo period has expired--regardless of whether or not it's true. When the demo period has expired, Paperless displays a message that looks a lot like the serialization prompt.

To determine this, we'd need to troubleshoot. We like to this by getting a screenshot from you of what the serialization prompt looks like; this way we can determine whether it's the serialization prompt that appears under demo or the serialization prompt that appears after the demo period is over.

John, if you could go to Support on our site and create a support ticket and supply this information, we can further assist. As far as the sale in concerned, if you decide to buy Paperless, we'll work something out.

Should you buy Paperless through this promotion, install it, and then find that you need to either rebuild or replace your system and as a result, have to reinstall Paperless, there will be no licensing or other issues.

Since Paperless is a digital document management application, as such, you have multiple ways to organize your scanned documents by creating Smart Collections - assign criteria so that a scanned document, that meets that criteria, will be automatically filed in the specified collection or folder. You can also create categories, sub-categories, custom fields, data types - all so that you can organized as needed. You can also import PDF, RTF, JPG and many other file formats to Paperless.

You can always download the trial version and give it a test drive to see if it will fit all your needs.

Kind regards,

teresa

Retired Engineer I am late to this dance, so apologies if I'm rehashing a solved problem here.

I've tried several scan-to-digital utilities which incorporate OCR, and invariably it has been OCR misclassifications (both characters and delimited formats) which have sent me back to scanning images with lots of tags, so I can find them again.

What documented performance data can Paperless supply in OCR? Or, am I missing something and Paperless must have a third party OCR app to work well? If so, which one?

lemonade soda I have an HP digital scanner 9200c. It scans and places a file directly in a folder. I do not use scanning software. With paperless, I presume I can just "pick up" the PDF in the folder it was saved in. However, for something that is pre-scanned, am I still able to OCR the document, and indeed, optimise it to improve contrast, remove background etc.? Not much info is on your website, perhaps you rely on the video tutorials. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be working today... perhaps server overload

Jim Willis Hello Mike Wray - I tried the demo & it worked with my old Epson Perfection 3170 scanner. My problem is that I don't have acrobat & will never have it on my system & I can't figure out how to tell Paperless to use my pdf program. I emailed your support & I know that they won't get back to me before this deal is dead because they are probably home in bed by now. I really like the looks of this program and even though there probably is a bit of a learning curve it already makes more sense to me than paperport ever did & I only spent a few minutes with it. So I'm going to buy it & hope I can get the pdf problem sorted out or, if not, you might refund my money.
I think it's really cool that you're bringing your software over to Windows.
So thanks to you & bdj.

Jim McGowan I ended up not purchasing Paperless. Though I have asked a few times here I don’t believe I have received a straight answer to an important question.

Will Paperless perform the same functions with imported PDF files that it does with PDFs it created itself from a scanner or other document format?

It is important to me because I would be importing all my existing PDF files, which is a lot. The software that came with my ScanSnap S300M would not handle any imported PDFs. You could bring them in but none of the features worked for the imported files. And I see that Paperless seems to be closely aligned with Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners and serves as the included software for some of them.

Each time I asked about the above here the answer stated that yes, Paperless can do this or that with PDF files, but they would not specify imported files. I can't take the chance that it won't work with all my files that would be imported. If Mike or Teresa finally manages to answer my questions specifically I will most likely buy it with or without the discount since I really need to get something other than Paperport.

Thanks!

Jim

If so, does a future uprade of Paperless effectively migrate the data to the new version? Thanks.

Lance User As a long time and reasonably satisfied user of Nuance's Paperport on two PC's, I missed it when I purchased an iMac at the end of last year. I purchased Paperless yesterday for the iMac and I am quite satisfied with how it works. I did have an issue with my scanner (Epson V500) not starting but when I restarted the computer Paperless and the scanner co-operated and everything is working well. Now, all I have to continue doing is importing all the necessary files and categorise and tag them as I go. It certainly finds documents quickly, I have found, after conducting a number of searches as a test. If you seriously want to get organised, Paperless will be a good choice.

Does the program connect easily and work well with most scanners ? using Twain and or other ways ?

Thanks,
Johno.

Scanned documents are saved as a PDF. So, no it is not a proprietary file format which makes the final digital image very versatile.

Cary Adams Earlier comments indicated that many scanner users are looking for a viable alternative to Paperport. I understand that too well, as I am a Paperport user myself. That said, this program does not compete with PaperPort. The best way to characterize it is as a document filing system with the ability to "tag", file and search internally. Although it offers OCR capability, it differs markedly from Paperport. Of course it is markedly less expensive as well.
To compare:
1. There are no scanning profiles. Your scanning capabilities are limited by the your existing Twain and WIA drivers.
2. There is no means to manipulate the scanned output. You cannot trim, despeckle, crop, erase, etc. your scanned images.
3. I access an AIO scanner wirelessly. This was problematic for Paperless. Although it initially found my scanner, it soon "lost" the connection and was unable to regain communication.
If you can find Paperport on sale at deep discount, it would be the better deal. Alternatively you might consider Nitro Pro (offered here recently) if you are content to work within the "My Documents" filing structure that comes with Windows.
However, if you are content with your Twain and WIA scanner features, then Paperless offers a convenient means to classify and file your documents.

Rick Hello,

I was also looking at this program as a possible alternative for PaperPort on secondary computers but feel that the programs are sufficiently dissimilar to make meaningful comparisons. This noted, Paperless seems like a solid program for what it does and at a price of $24.97.

In consideration of purchasing Paperless, the licensing policy as specified at the time of my post omits several important details. Specific information on the following licensing terms would be appreciated:
1) Can the license be transferred to another owned computer?

2) Is a hardware fingerprint used?

3) If a hardware fingerprint is used, how many installations are allowed per hardware fingerprint?

4) Does the software offer on-the-fly activation/deactivation or an on-line licensing portal? One installation is not the industry standard but on-the-fly activation/deactivation could easily address this limitation.

Could you also please confirm that the following statement from the Fine Print is accurate: “You must install/register the software within 15 days, and cannot do so afterwards.” I am hoping that this is an error as this would be a solid deal breaker for me. Equally, I cannot think of any reason for placing such a constraint on a software purchase.

Related to the comment of the cost of Nuance products and my feelings towards Nuance aside, OmniPage Ultimate and PaperPort 14 Professional can be purchased as a package for $99, which includes two installations. Not a big difference in cost if PaperPort 14 functionality and OmniPage OCR capabilities are needed.

Thank you…

Paperport AND Omnipage for $99 ?? where ? havent seen it that cheap for some time. I have already approaced Nuance for an upgrade path myself and they wanted more than that, which is part of the reason other programs such as Paperless are being considered.
Nuance Dont look after past customers very well at all, very disappointed with them in that sense. The upgrade costs are crazy and my current versions are not that old.

Anyways all interesting stuff..

anthonyraynor? @John. I like many here am a current PaperPort user. I think it is a great program, but their activation scheme is frustrating. I am surprised you haven't had offers from them. A week doesn't go past that they aren't spamming me incessantly to upgrade to one of their products. The last was the newest version of OmniPage with a free copy of PaperPort.

I have tried many programs, but none equal PaperPort. The scans with my Fujitsu S1300i are very good and it is the editing features of PaperPort that set it apart. Sometimes their scanner integration lacks, but otherwise I am sticking with it.

I also have Paperless, but it just isn't as full featured as PaperPort.

Jeff Carbello I was very impressed with the document management features of this program and the ability to customize these.

In your tutorial videos, I saw that there is checkbox to store metadata. I would assume that with all these categorizing data that it is stored in some database, but what exactly is stored in metadata? XMP is the future format for metadata in files as it allows for any type data to be saved into the file either PDF XMP metadata or as JPEG ITPC/XMP metadata. Does your application support XMP metadata so that this data goes with the file? Can the metadata be set for JPG files as well or just PDF?

What is the database engine behind the data? Is one able to backup this data or export it?

Also does it support adding page numbers when combinations of documents are scanned into a single PDF?

Jeff Carbello What is it that people love so much in PaperPort that is missing in an document organization application like this. PaperPort it seems gets much love for its features but much hate for its execution of these features in that its buggy and slow from what I can tell from others opinions and reviews.

I know that having image cleanup tools missing from an application that supports scanning is a big one for this Paperless app. Saved scanning profiles. Saved searches could be another but I think that's what Smart Collections really are.

Sohodox claims to be a PaperPort alternative and even has article on their website explaining it.

The one thing that confuses me with Paperless is that it provides a thumbnail view and quick view inline, but what does it not support an inline view pane of actual PDF. I have to open it to view its actual PDF render. That seems odd not to offer that.

I see many great things in this Paperless app in terms of document organization so it made me grab the deal only hoping that the developers add the much needed features in future releases (i.e scan cleanup editing, saved scanning profiles, inline PDF view pane, embedded XMP metadata for PDF/JPG, basic annotation for PDF docs, ability to link docs, batch document updating). If I could combine the Paper Scan Pro app and this Paperless I think it would be a great solution for me. Paper Scan Pro developers do not seem to be keen on adding much document management to the application, so I can only hope that Paperless would offer more robust scanning cleanup and annotations in future release so I could obtain the document management system I am looking for.

I do need to take another look at Sohodox since it now looks very full featured and curious if it was ever offered here as a deal.

anthonyraynor? I tried Paperless on my Mac with the ScanSnap S1300i and it followed the Mac design philosophy well. I don't mean this post to be a commercial for PaperPort, as it surely has it's own issues. As others have commented, I won't use a product that has a proprietary database such as Paperless and Neatdesk.

Paperport lets you save in your own structure and has more editing tools than most. That is why I stick with it.

Laz Diaz well I just purchased a 5 user license and supporting the developer, while I can easily develop this myself, I think it’s well worth the added capabilities to my current process with paperport, excel and some middleware I wrote to automate paperport, excel, filename, folder generation in perl. I hope with the support of this deal, the developer will continue to enhance the tool While I do agree with everyone on paperport editing tools, the piece that lacks the most is the additional meta data and tags you can assign to documents. based on my tests, the documents are not stored in the database, only the association and metadata for the document. the pdf file is stored in the file system. also I don't view MYSQL as a proprietary database. I think you will be able to easily use this to your advantage for reporting and automation. The reporting features is what sold me, I think I can work around the limitations of the UI and editing by complimenting other tools. I think I will end up using both, paperport for by initial edit and scanning (stacking), then plan to import into paperless, associate metadata and tags, and use it in my day to day work flows with smart collections and regular collections. The ability to create a report with the images is awesome.

Jeff Carbello Laz, I think the developer uses SQLite3 and not MySQL, but even SQLite3 is easy to connect to data provided you know where the SQLite file lives and have a driver installed on your machine and a little development knowledge.

I agree the editing can be accomplished via other scan tools and using this one for organization. The one issue I do hope developer addresses would be an inline PDF view pane rather then having to always click open and each and view in separate window.

Scott Van Leeuwen I recommend you download the trial first to make sure your scanner work with this software. It does not work with my Canon Pixma MG5250 wireless where Paperport 14 which I currently use does.

I went to their website and it says that the software does not support TWAIN. I can get it to work if I use the Windows WIA driver for this printer, but everything will only scan in Colour at 300dpi and I do not need Colour for my document, I use Greyscale at 150DPI. Unless someone from Mariner who make the software can help me by reading this, I will not purchase as I cannot use it. The seem to support mostly Scan Gear scanners and I am not going to buy a new expensive scanner to make this software work. Back to good old Paperport.

I would never buy an application that in its license claims to be a "user" license and then tells you it can only be installed on a desktop and laptop. This is NOT a "user" license. A user license allows you to install the application on all the computers you own, but you can use it on only one computer at a time. I have two desktops and 7 laptops. The license is only a computer license and not a user license. Would not buy!

Mariner Software Julio -

Thanks for the inquiry.

Paperless is a digital document management solution. The ScanSnap manager does just that - it manages where scanned images are placed. Fine Reader is an OCR product - this and Acrobat comes with the iX500. Our product, Paperless, provides you with a filing system, rather, you create your own method of filing, scanned documents. None of the products that come with the iX500 do that. With Paperless, you can create Smart Collections to automatically catalog scanned documents based on criteria you set. You can create multiple libraries in Paperless, for example, you can have a document library for all your work related items and one for all the paper you collect for your home. You can email a document from Paperless to your accountant. In short, Paperless becomes your 2 or 4 drawer filing cabinet but instead of having furniture - it is on your PC or your Mac and, if you're like me, you end up with more room and a clean desk! You can read about it in the Mariner blog:

We do have a policy covering folks who buy a version and within a certain time period, we release a new version. In addition, if someone were to purchase a version and we release a new version beyond that time period, we do offer an upgrade path which is a 50% discount off the standard pricing. So, either way, we try to do good by our customers wherever they may fall in the timing.

That said, I can be confident to say that a Paperless 3 - while in the works, it's release is not imminent. I hope this helps.

Thriftslut Having been looking for a PaperPort 12 replacement for some time, I loaded the trial version of this software on my Windows 7 computer. For the price, this software compares very favorably with the three different editions of PaperPort that I have used over the years.

Some impressions:

The hardest part of getting the program going is setting up its initial library. Once you get that going, everything works quite well. If you are having a difficult time of this (took me about 15 minutes), print the instructions for doing this from the Help file and you should be just fine.

The program easily interfaced with my Brother Laser All-in-One device.

I loved being able to search the CONTENT of the scanned PDFs from the program itself. PaperPort 12 could only search titles, tags, etc., so I have to use Agent Ransack to search for content in the PaperPort files.

Verdict: Very good product for the price of this deal!

Cary Adams While there's some overlap between Paperless and Paperport, for the most part they are quite different applications. Paperless is a document manager with powerful search and collection features, which includes compatibility with Quicken personal finance software. While both Paperless and Paperport offer scan/OCR capability, Paperport offers extensive scan manipulation features, but little if any document management features, and its search capability is no better than what Windows offers freely..

If your need is document management Paperless is unquestionably an attractive candidate here today. However if you need to edit your scanned document (eg. denoise, sharpen, markup, 3-hole punch and edge clean-up) Paperport might be more appropriate.

If you're still unsure, download the Paperless help file (PDF) to see all that is possible... things you might overlook with the trial software.

Yes, there is - you can create a Smart folder and set criteria for it. For example, if you need to track medical FSA receipts - create your Smart folder and then a category of say, 'FSA' so that when you select that category, that paper will be automatically placed in that folder. There are many options for categories or you can create a custom one. You can also drag and drop a receipt/document into a folder. I find that creating a Smart folder and setting criteria to be the easiest and fastest way.

Adam Bridge A great pity that you removed the TWAIN support - I have a Canon MX350 and if I select the Twain option I can do everything in the Twain linked software including preview EXCEPT use the scan button which won't work. If I use the built-in Microsoft WIA option then I get a basic and fairly useless scan with virtually no editing features available. So to use your software I would have to scan outside the program and then import the scan manually which means double handling. In my humble opinion you really should have left the TWAIN option in and therefore allow Paperless to support whatever scanning software was used. I would have happily purchased but for this.

Scott Van Leeuwen I do not understand why scanning software Paperlesss would have no TWAIN support as it is the standard for scanning. My Can MG5250 when I use twain brings up everything when I use your software until I press the scan button and nothing happens. Canon bundle their printer with a scanning driver that is TWAIN Compliant and my Paperport 14 Software works excellent with my Multi-function Wireless Scanner/Printer. Why did you take support for TWAIN away and make your software so much less usable for home users , which at your price point is what it is targeted at. The ScanSnap scanner are over $200 and I am not going to purchase one just for home use.

I also do not understand why nobody from Mariner Software will not address mu issues. I'm glad I did not purchase the software, because the support must be terrible. I have asked three times for a response and not once has anyone from Mariner Software responded in the last two days.

If I am to fresh install Windows due to virus infection or due to crash of the system or if I change or replace my computer will I be able to install and register Paperless again and activate it. I intend to use it on only one computer but there are sometimes instances when you have to fresh install Windows and all other software. So if this License must be registered within 15 days of purchase it means I will not be able to re-install it again if I have to. This does not make any sense to make a purchase. When one buys a software he must be able to use the software for lifetime without any restrictions and must be able install and re-install as many times as he wants it if he is going to use in one computer only. People change computers after few years and they need to reinstall the software. Please comment and respond

Hi Anand-
Hmmm, that's odd. Can you drop a line to supportmarinersoftware.com and our techs can troubleshoot what might be going on? Make sure to mention what scanner you are using.

Hi Amin-
Sorry for the confusion. All of our software come as trial copies. You effectively can "try before you buy." Depending on the title, you have x amount of days to evaluate the product. When it expires you either need to register the trial copy with a serial # that you purchased (which then turns it into a non-expiring copy) or, if the product didn't work out for you, just remove it from your system. Hope that clears things up.

Matt Hello Peter Gabriel and Teresa,

I also have an old Epson Perfection 636U scanner using the Hamrick's VueScan x64 drivers on Windows 8.1.

When scanning within Paperless, I also receive the Access Violation error.

Scanning from other applications or directly from VueScan works fine. I only have the problem with scanning in Paperless.

Teresa, I will also contact Mariner Support.

Thank you.

Rick Truell Teresa: Amin's question and confusion results from the "The Fine Print" tab, which contains the statement: "You must install/register the software within 15 days, and cannot do so afterwards".

That statement has nothing to do with trial vs registered software, as you supposed Amin's question was about, but is a condition imposed on the free software given away by Bits Du Jour. It should be obvious that that statement doesn't apply to software that is *paid for*, but many people on Bits Du Jour take the contents of that tab as gospel, without thinking about them...even though the tab has frequently been shown to contain statements that are conflicting and, as in this case, obviously incorrect.

Sadly, nobody checks the info on the "The Fine Print" tab before the deals go live...even though doing so would save people *a lot* of time and trouble :-(

Daniel How can you charge for your software and users have to install within 15 days. Cannot uninstall or reformat your hard drive. If you do they cannot install your software,
that users paid for. What kind of business are you running. If the following is a mistake edit what you copied and pasted before posting the fine print. You can lose buyers with the following:

"You must install/register the software within 15 days, and cannot do so afterwards."

Colin McAllister I wanted to try this, but had to wade through loads of "Untrusted connection" screens. Then the Windows download is a ".dmg" file - a type I've never seen before... because I don't use Apple Mac!

I tried opening this with an unzip program, but there more zip files inside, as well as ordinary folders and files. Is there a Windows "install.exe" or similar?

Mariner Software Hi Colin-
You may have inadvertently downloaded the Mac version. I just tested the site and the Windows link is downloading the exe version of the app. Head here and look for Paperless for Windows...

https://marinersoftware.com/download/

I'm not sure what the untrusted connection issue is. I'm not seeing that, nor have I heard that from others. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Hi Daniel & Rick-
The trial copy is like most others that when you first launch the app, the clock is ticking on the amount of time you have to evaluate it before you have to purchase or remove the app. I'll circle back to the Bits message to see if we can clarify that. Sorry about that.

Jim Ryden Repeating this question AGAIN as I have had no reply from Mariner, and I also note that the issue of password protected zips has been raised in a review of Paperless on the US Amazon.com:

I am trying out the software before purchase. I have scanned in two documents - all fine so far. Made a backup of these documents and found the zip created but when I try to open this zip file it asks for a password - I have not chosen to encrypt the backup. What password do I use? How do I restore a backed up library as Paperless seems to have no restore function?

I have also noticed that a "missing documents" issue has not been addressed in your Windows FAQ and the US review mentions corruption of documents inside Paperless.

I welcome your replies to these issues.

Thanks

Nick Kobe I was interested in buying the software. I have several similar programs. However, in reading the "fine print" I noted that the license is limited to a desktop and laptop computer. I have one desktop and 7 laptops. The license does not work for me. Frankly, I do not buy any software package with a license that limits the number of computers I can install it on. Would like to buy, but it doesn't meet my usage. By the way I am the only user on these computers.

Mariner Software Hi Daniel-
Responses to your questions below...

1.) yes, same concept. Being that we don't have a hardware component the customer isn't locked in to getting a software/hardware solution.

2.) On the Mac side, we recommend Fujitsu but any scanner/all-in-one that supports Image Capture should work. On the Win side there is a little more flexibility. We usually have pretty good luck with Twain-compliant scanners though we always suggest to download a trial copy and do some testing in your own environment just to be safe.

3.) We have a running list for awhile but due to the fact there are hundreds of models out there and they are always changing, it was too tough to maintain the list.

4.) Nope. We are looking at a dropbox solution for Paperless 3 but that's a ways out.

Mariner Software I doubt we will bring the forum back. It was meant to be a source where users could go to get helpful information and exchange ideas. Unfortunately it wasn't being used that way.

With regards to Paperless 3, we don't really give road maps or feature lists until we are into beta. We have some decent features and functionality that we are implementing, including alot of behind the scenes stuff. Sorry I can't be more precise at this point.

Hope that helps!

Mariusz Lewandowski Teresa, please comment the following issues:

1. The trial version does not allow to edit categories. I can add a new category by typing it in the textbox but cannot delete others. Will I be able to edit categories in the full version?

2. Unfortunately, OCR does not recognize national characters. Is there a full utf support planned?

3. The "Title" list retains filenames of documents that I deleted from the library. Why? BTW - the "Title" combobox is a very long list and is completely unusable. How do I make it shorter or hide from the right pane?

4. The import function (Ctrl+I) is supposed to import pdfs already stored on hard drive. I did a trial import of 50 pdfs and saw 50 dialog boxes with the following message:

"Paperless failed to import the item named:
D:\Paperless\Paperless Library.paperless\Documents\2015\08\09\DocumentName.pdf 08-09-15_1.xml"

And then I had to click OK 50 times... Finally I saw duplicated documents, deleting duplicates causes the other "copy" displays "Document is not available". Do I have to keep duplicated copies? What went wrong?

5. Is it possible to edit column names?

Many TIA
-- M.L.

Mariner Software Hi Mariusz-
Responses below...

1.) You make changes to autofill values that display in default fields (such as Category, Subcategory, and Title/ Merchant) under the General Fields section of Library Configuration.

If it helps, it should be possible to access Library Configuration by selecting Show Library Configuration from the Help menu.

Within the General Fields section of Library Configuration, it should be possible to remove an entry from one of the lists (for example, from the Category field) by selecting the entry, then clicking the minus button that appears at the bottom of the list.

2.) Yes, that's on our radar.

3.) This one is something we had done on the Mac version and then switched it since the file name was changing and the location of the file based on edits and we had instances where the file became disassociated with the record (crashes and rare events). We would need more info for this one.

4.) Hard to troubleshoot this one. You may want to send a note to supportmarinersoftware.com

5.) No

RedJ This software has some very nice features, but there are currently some really major bugs in this software. There hasn't been a significant update since ~2011. Is there any hope for a release that fixes broken backups, combining documents, or the unwanted mass renaming of files?

Also, the search function is ridiculously simplistic given the sheer amount of fields documents could be narrowed down by. Search needs to become much more sophisticated than just entering a single keyword.

Nick Kobe Isn't it a contradiction in the "fine print" to state that the license is per user then to state that it is limited to a desktop and laptop? In addition, isn't it further a contradiction to state that you must activate the installed software via the internet? No thanks! The license is really a two computer license and NOT a user license.
Aug 12 2015 at 8:27pm Copy Link
0
Mariner Software We expanded the license agreement a few years ago as many of customers were asking if they could use one license on two computers. It seemed like the right thing to do.

I'm not sure what you are referring to with regard to activating the software via the internet?? The way you activate or register the product is by entering a serial #, whether you are on the internet or not.
Mariner Software, Inc. - Aug 12 2015 at 9:47pm Copy Link
0
Nick Kobe If the license is per user then a user should be able to install the software on the computers they own. If the license limits the number of computers to two computers then the license is NOT per user it is per every two computers. If activation is required then the license is per two computers. I only buy software where the license is per user and I can install it on all the computers I own. In our family we have 2 desktops, 9 laptops (might be more), 3 slates, and 4 androids. Depending on the software an application might be installed on any where from one computer to all of them. A license limiting the number of computers is grossly out of date.

While we don't have an automated backup system in Paperless you can set it to remind you to backup after certain time periods. Migrating to a new computer would be as simple as copying your library file to a thumb drive and adding to the proper location on your new computer, then downloading the most current version of the app to your new computer.

Here is how OCR in Paperless should normally work:

1) The preference "Perform OCR on Imported/ Scanned files" is enabled in Paperless preferences.
2) When a library item is imported, Paperless retrieves text from the library item in one of two ways:
- If the source file was a PDF that contained searchable text, Paperless imports the searchable text from the PDF.
- If the source file was anything other than a PDF, Paperless performs OCR on the library item.
3) Paperless writes the text it's received to the OCR Text field.

Paperless also uses a process to attempt to fill information from the OCR Text field to specific fields in the Details pane:

A. Date: Paperless will attempt to retrieve a date of sale from the
B. Amount: Paperless will attempt to retrieve the total amount of the sale from the receipt.
C. Merchant: Paperless will match text in the OCR Text field with entries in the Merchants/ Titles list, in Library Configuration (under the General Fields tab). If Paperless determines a match, it will fill the text of the matched entry (from the Merchants/ Titles list) to the Title/ Merchant field for the library item.

Before we get too far, it seems worthwhile to qualify that OCR and the autocomplete process cannot be expected to be accurate 100% of the time; due to the variety in the way receipts (and invoices) and the information they present are formatted, due to other factors such as the quality of the source file or document (whether, for example, there are a lot of stray marks, whether the print quality of a document is generally good, or whether the document was a facsimile printout or some other sort of copy where the text is not as clear as it seems like the original might be) and factors related to the scanning process (which resolution, for example, a source is scanned at) that is imported to Paperless. What I'm trying to develop is that, although we do our best to provide OCR and field autpopulation in a way that consistent and predictable, there might also be situations where factors beyond our control might make the process somewhat unpredictable, as well.

Mariner Software Anuwat -
The short answer to this is no. Paperless for Mac and Paperless for Windows were not designed to share the same library files.

That being said, however, you should be able to do the following, albeit not seamlessly:

- open a Paperless library created on a Mac with Paperless for Windows

- open a Paperless library created on a Windows machine with Paperless for Mac

- import a Paperless library created on a Mac into Paperless for Windows

- import a Paperless library created on a Windows machine into Paperless for Mac

You will find that not all metadata, collections, smart collections and other properties of your library will transfer between Mac and Windows perfectly. Again, the Paperless libraries, at least for version 2.0 are not designed to be cross platform.

Fortunately, the library structure for both Paperless for Mac and Paperless for Windows were designed in such a way that we will hopefully be able to allow some cross-platform library sharing in the future. We will be looking at iCloud and other shared storage options, but we aren't yet in the planning stages for such cross-platform compatibility.

Depending on the model of scanner you are using, you probably will be able to use a scanner distributed with Neat software to import to Paperless.

NeatCo has distributed several different models of scanners with their software: in our testing we’ve found that newer models of scanners (which typically have a white plastic case) can usually be used to import to Paperless and that older models of scanners (which typically have a grey plastic case) cannot.

You state in the Fine Print, "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%."

When this Stealth Windows 10 Release becomes available later this year, will it be considered a free update for what you are selling today or will it be considered a new version and require the 50% discount upgrade fee.

Mariner Software Mix624-

1.) The serial comes from BitsDuJour so they will have to help with that.

2.) Yes.

3.) We are seeing some flakey issues with some scanners in the current release of Paperless (version 2.3.0) that our developers are looking into. Iit should be possible to work around this behavior by doing either of the three following things:

a. To use your scanner's ADF, consider importing straight to your hard drive and importing files saved from completed scans to Paperless.

b. Consider scanning directly to the Drop folder, within your Paperless library file. If Paperless detects that a file has been saved to the Drop folder, it should import it automatically and remove the original file.

c. If you would rather import directly to Paperless (without saving to a file on your hard drive first, consider using your scanner's flatbed functionality instead of the ADF.

4.) I'll need to inquire about this.

Mariner Software Joe-
The stealth release already took place and was so minor it didn't justify a slip release. I expect our time frame for Paperless 3 for Win will be toward Q4 and it will be charged. Our upgrade price is expected to be in the $20-$25 range. Subsequent updates before that will be free.

Colin McAllister I just downloaded the trail from the BDJ link above. Install seemed to be going ok, then I got to a popup that had "enter serial" and "not yet". As I have no serial for the demo, I clicked "not yet" and the popup disappears, but the program does not start. I click "enter serial", add my email, and the program does not start.

If I can't test, I can't buy. :-(

Mariner Software Yes it can. You can create a report that will effectively give you the ability to itemize your data in the way you want.

Wearsie Jackson I am a user of this software and found it to be a very basic scanning/paper management program. Good value at 25 bucks but no bells, whistles, nor PDF editing/rearranging capabilities with this software. As it says, it is in fact very useful for organizing paper clutter - again, it's certainly not as feature rich as Paper Port, but that's OK because Paperless is a mere fraction of the price of those other tools.

Another worthwhile find from BDJ that is definitely worth $25, especially if you're just dipping your toe into the paper free movement.

TAPTRONIC Thank you for the reply. This looks nice! I see from the help system that you're using the ABBYY OCR engine. I will play around some more and I am thinking I will purchase this. I have so many receipts that need to be scanned and OCR'd.

Jo Ann Rice There are no dates on your site or any Change logs that show when the last Major version was released. What is the time frame of the next major release please? I am interested in this app, but not if I'm going to have to update it within the next 3 to 6 months after purchasing it in order to get the updates of a Major release.

Usually we have a time frame (1 year being most common) on how long we can get updates for even for Major version updates, so this is an unusual setup you have that doesn't give any time frame and specifically states that we have to pay to upgrade if a Major release happens, an that means it could be 2 weeks from now lol.

So what's the time frame at the moment for the next Major version update?

Retired Engineer I take it that Paperless incorporates its own OCR software. Do you have any screenshots to show its error rates with various fonts and formatting?

Mariner Software Wearsie - thanks for the nice words. More features and functionality coming in Paperless 3 next year.

Riad - "Scan" - All documents in the ADF - will go into one file
"Scan Multi" - each document in the ADF will import as a separate file

Taptronic - Actually we use a customized version of Tesseract as our engine.

Javier - It has been a few years since we have had a significant release. We are working on a major release for 2018.

Allan - yes, yes

Jo Ann - we are in the early stages of Paperless 3 for Windows so I would suspect mid 2018 at least. Paperless 3 for Mac will be significantly sooner.

Retired Engineer - Not our own but rather a customized version of Tesseract. No screenshots of the OCR process but I would strongly encourage you (and everyone on this post) to download a trial copy just to make sure Paperless is what you are expecting. We have a full functioning trial copy here...

Hope that helps!

Jo Ann Rice Thanks much for the reply, can you be more specific on the time frame for the Mac version? I should have said I was on a Mac earlier and didn't think to do so. When you say "significantly sooner" does that mean within the next 3 months? 6 months?

Mariner Software RE - sorry Auto Document Feeder. Not sure what is going on with video. I'm on Mac so it shows fine. Let me inquire with our web group.

Jo Ann- that's the million dollar question. :-) The goal is to have it released this year.

riad af What I meant in my question is the possibility to divide one scanned image that contains 2 opposite pages of a book to 2 halfs, divide 1 image to 2 halfs, can you please address that question?

Jo Ann Rice Thanks again for the reply,

So if the release is planned (and does happen) this year, this means those of us that purchase during this BDJ offer will have to pay again to upgrade less than four months into the license?

Colin McAllister Hi.
I have some questions:
a) How is "Cover flow" obtained? There is nothing about it in the help file.

b) The help file and the user guide seem to be the same pdf document - is that the intent?

c) It seems I can't view PDFs without installing Adobe Reader?

I have what I consider better PDF viewers already installed and I asked Paperless to use one of those. But now everytimg I mouse over a file I'm asked if I want to saveor view and I have to keep hitting cancel. Is that the standard Paperless behaviour?

d) If I import documents into Paperless, am I creating yet another copy od files already on my hard drive?

Thanks.

Mariner Software Jo Ann - Our policy is a 90 day window. That means if a customer orders a previous version within 90 days of the new MAJOR upgrade shipping, they would get it for free.

Riad - No, unfortunately we can't do that in the current version.

Colin- Are you on Mac or Win? There are different answers for either platform.

A Bridg I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone thinking of purchasing this software to DOWNLOAD it first and try it out. And yes, the capitals are for emphasis ! Paperless doesn't work properly with all scanners and if yours isn't on the list you have to use workarounds (which makes the software a lot less useful in my opinion). READ the older comments to see some of the issues people have had especially if, as others have said, it hasn't been updated for long time so it is unlikely that many of those issues have been addressed. ASK if they have properly implemented TWAIN support for your scanner yet otherwise you will be using WIA instead which will mean you can't get all the features.

A Bridg Hi Mariner - In answer to you I have a Canon Maxify 5300 with the latest drivers. It works fine with the Canon software that comes with it. I use it daily - no issues.

I just downloaded your software to see if you had fixed the issues I had when trying to use previous Canon scanners with Paperless. I told it what printer I had and that I wanted to use Twain support. The result - I can do a scan preview fine but when I want to do a real scan it refuses to do anything when I click the scan button. I had exactly the same problem with two other Canon printers in the past and the only alternative is using WIA which means I have to manually scan and then import into Paperless which takes all the convenience away from using the software in the first place. At the time your support personnel suggested I buy a Fuji ScanSnap scanner as that is the only scanner you will positively support. Buying a $ 200 plus scanner to use with your $ 25 software is not really an option for me and I would suggest most other people too.

I cannot believe this has not been addressed by now. What is the issue with Twain and Mariner Software ? It is good enough for everyone else - and yes, Paperless worked fine on my Twain Canon too and it also works with FileCenter on Twain. I suggest you publish a list of scanners that do and don't work properly with Paperless so that customers can tell if it is going to work in their situuation.
