What are people saying about PDF Scan Pro

Albert C. Hi. I bought Home Document Manager a couple of days ago here at BDJ. I have a question: what's the difference between the capabilities of PDF Scan Pro and those of Home Document Manager? Does PDF Scan Pro have additional tools or is HDM the "big brother" with all the tools plus others?

Tim Haughton Hi Albert - PDF Scan Pro currently has more advanced PDF creation capabilities. It can, for instance, add and remove pages from a scan. It can reorder the pages and rotate them.

It creates searchable PDF files, but does not organise them. Home Document Manager was design to be kind of like Outlook for your paperwork, PDF Scan Pro is aimed at people who want to go paperless, but would rather manage the PDFs themselves.

The more advanced PDF capabilities will be added to Home Document Manager soon too.

Not one for standing still, I've just released an update this morning which allows you to scan documents straight in to Google Docs. Works with standard Google Docs accounts as well as with Google Apps accounts.

It's a first version of our Google Docs integration, and we'll refine and improve it based on feedback. Happy shredding!

I installed the trial version of PDF Scan Pro yesterday. In order to install the latest update do I download the trial again and install over the top of the previous version? (or do I need to uninstall the previous version first?)

Tim Haughton Hi Brenton - assuming your machine is connected to the Internet, PDF Scan Pro will update itself when you run it. It's around 60meg, so just give it time to update. Any problems let me know.

Tim Haughton @Jon - It's my intention to add page reordering and rotation to Home Document Manager. I also plan to add advance document clean-up to PDF Scan Pro, such as despeckle, holepunch removal, geometry correction etc. There are no current plans to add that to Home Document Manager.

Robert Keen Have the trial version, am able to scan with no problem. But, the program does not show me how to find what I scanned. Please advise as I have only till 12am EST to make my decision as to wheither I want this program or not.

Tim Haughton @Bob - PDF Scan Pro is not a desktop document management application, it simply offers the easiest and cheapest way to convert paper into searchable PDF files.

To find files, you can use Windows Search. Or if you require a desktop document management application you might want to try our product (Home Document Manager)

The BDJ Description of this product above certainly implies that this program enables user to FIND documents that contain the information he is seeking. Now you say that it cannot find files. ????

Tim Haughton @Jon, most modern operating systems have a search technology which allows the finding of information. Whether it's Windows Search or Google Desktop.

PDF Scan Pro uses OCR to create searchable PDFs. This means that your computer can index the documents, allowing you to use Windows Search (or other technology) to find the documents you're looking for.

Home Document Manager is a desktop document management application. As well as creating searchable PDFs (and support for many other file formats) it can organise files (with folders and tags) and maintains its own index of files for quick searching.

Roger Thomasson @ Jon Without OCR technology, scanned documents are not searchable via any search engine, desktop or otherwise. This is because a non-OCR scan simply generates a flat image. A scan that utilizes OCR, however, is searchable because the scanned characters have been identified and converted into actual ACSII (or Unicode?) text. PDF Scan Pro does not include a search mechanism, but it does make documents searchable by Windows Explorer, Google Desktop, or any other search engine capable of parsing text. Chances are your existing scan software will not do this unless it uses OCR. I altered the copy slightly, hopefully it will clear up any confusion.

Peter Basralian Can this program be used with the PC or Mac or both if I use Google Docs? Basically, I'm switching over to Mac. File organization is the critical part of scanning. Is there any example setup you have for cataloqing the scanned files for later retrieval?
