Thank you

ABBYY Hello,
In regards to your question above, no the software does not need an active online connection to operate. It resides on your computer hard drive. Nor do you need to be logged into an account of any form. This is a standalone, desktop application.

_*_ @ABBYY iAM, Thank you for your answer.

I do have two other questions.
1. Since it does not require online connection I figured I would download and test the program. However, it requires me to give up my full name, email address, and country of residence.

Is it possible to have a direct link to the trial to give the program a go without having to give up personal information just to try your software?

2 The "Fine Print" states, "Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key." I am thinking if purchased this program will work indefinitely for the version purchased (with all minor updates), correct?

Thank you again.

ABBYY Hello again,

#1: We do require complete contact information in exchange for downloading the trial. However, once you have downloaded the trial, you can opt-out of receiving any additional information from ABBYY (the new PII and privacy policies are strictly enforced and abided by here).

#2: If you use the trial version of the software and then decide to purchase a activation key will be provided to you via email. So, you install only once. Installing a new version the same computer usually refers to upgrading an existing version. When you install an upgrade version, you receive a new activation key which invalidates your previous version.

The software is licensed to one individual and can be used on two computers (laptop and desktop). Both copies cannot be used simultaneously.

Hopefully this answers all of your questions.

Regards,
Angel Brown

_*_ Thanks again for the answers. I rather not give out personal information to give a trial a go, so it will be a miss for me.

ABBYY Hello again,

Thank you for your support. We respect your privacy and the decision you made. Another option might be to purchase the product, it comes with a 30-day return option.

Doug Atkinson I'm just a user - not affiliated with the company. Abbyysoft has a great OCR (optical character reader) engine for converting images to text, very close to Adobe's at a much lower cost. I've used an older version of PDF Transformer and it works very well. Where I work now is licensed for Adobe, so I don't have a need to upgrade right now, but wanted to plug the product as a good one. In my experience, Abbyy does not pound you with e-mails, and you do get to learn about new sales, promotions, and usage tips.
I don't believe there is a Mac version.

ABBYY Dear Doug Atkinson,

Thank you for responding to the previous customer query and for your positive feedback on ABBYY and PDF Transformer.

You are correct, PDF Transformer+ is an windows only product; no MAC version at this time.

Mike B I have some PDF documents that use "ligatures" so that certain letter combinations (mainly "fi" , but I think some other ones) use a single special character in the PDF document. It looks fine when reading or printing the document, but it creates a problem when searching or copy/pasting.

Will ABBYY PDF Transformer+ allow me to replace those special ligatures with the normal "fi" characters?

Martin Yanski I haven't found an option which would allow me to embed a PDF file in the background of a first page of document (like PDF memo template). Have I missed something or...?

MojoMan Hair pulling time....

How do you change scanners ? The prog opens a dialog to my MFC all-in-one but I also have a dedicated document scanner which I want to use. I see no configuration option (or even any settings options) to change the scanner to the one I wish to use.

(I registered on your website and tried to submit a ticket but your system won't allow anyone to submit a ticket without s serial number - so I'm dead in the water as far as support from your site).

Thanks for your help.

Cary Adams @Martin Yanski ... Are you seeking to embed a PDF within a PDF? If so, I don't think that is possible. You can however import a PDF into a PDF with this program.

B Josephs I'm surprised there isn't more feedback - this is a great deal. I've used the software since the earlier (not plus) version and is one of the best OCR/conversion tools I've tried - especially for languages other than English. It's updated frequently. The company doesn't bombard you with emails. In short - great software for a great price.
Thanks ABBYY and BDJ!

Mike Murphy Can I install this on more than one personal computer?

Are future upgrades included?

Brent Carey @Mike Murphy, here's the answer to your question, as listed in the "Fine Print" section:

Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key.

Mike Murphy I'll stick with Nitro Pro then. At least you get updates until they come out with a new version.

ABBYY Dear &Mike Murphy,

Inline updates are free and can be downloaded by clicking "check updates" from within the product. upgrades, however are not free; three is a nominal charge.

Also, the product comes with a two-user license and can be installed on two computers (work/home or desktop/laptop) registered to the same user.

I hope this answers your questions.

CFGuy This program looks very good, and ABBYY has an outstanding reputation for quality software, and good customer service- I have always been a fan! Question about Licensing/Activation/EULA - the "Fine Print" section does not mention how thie software is "licensed"- per "user" or per "computer". Can it only be installed on 1 computer, or can it be installed on a user's desktop and laptop, but just not used at the same time? Also, does the program need to be "activated", and if so, is it a "software" or "hardware with footprint" activation (this can be important for people who upgrade their systems frequently, like me). Additionally, if the user/licensee buys a new computer (to replace an older model), can the program's license be "transferred" to the new computer, and what is the process involved for this- "deactivation" on old computer, call or email to customer support … Sorry for all of the technical questions, and thanks, in advance, for addressing them. -CFGuy.

Preston Mitchell QUESTIONS: Can the user add a 'YouTube' video to a PDF document (as I can do with Pro versions of Acrobat 9 or X)?
ABBYY seems to be a reasonable alternative to Acrobat? But why is it better than the leading 'Acrobat' alternative by Nuance, known as Power PDF Standard?

ABBYY We don't have any functions in the help file or in the software itself to add such multimedia into a PDF,

ABBYY PDFT is a PDF conversion tool (mainly for PDF format conversion). FineReader is the fully loaded OCR software (with all the features and setting options).

Preston Mitchell @ ABBYY iAm -- Thank you for the clarification. So, Transformer is really just a converter...which means it is not a substitute for Acrobat or Nuance Power PDF. But Fine Reader is an alternative to Acrobat or Nuance?

Cary Adams I purchased this here at BDJ, and am well satisfied.

It's been quite some time since this program was updated, and I suspect it is no longer under development.

Its PDF to DOC conversion is the better of the various pdf tools I have. While you can manipulate and OCR PDFs in various ways, you cannot edit the PDF's text directly, with the same text flow and font of the original document. It also includes a "print to pdf" add-on (by PDF X-Change).

My only quibble is that it installs a licensing service which runs 24/7 whether the program is in use or not. ABBYY does this individually for all their programs. That seems like useless overhead on my system when my program use may be 30 minutes weekly.
