VERY RECOMMENDED!.
I think this is The only software besides Adobe Acrobat Pro that supports RTL and can be used to add Arabic & Hebrew correctly on a pdf even if it is an image pdf. The OCR engine do not support Arabic and Hebrew so do not buy the optional Enhanced OCR Plugin if the OCR is intended for those languages.

Maybe the developer can say when there will be OCR for those languages ?

I have spoken with our development team and we are waiting on the producers if the OCR engine we've licensed for the Enhanced OCR plugin and they've stated that the OCR company hasn't included RTL language support in their initial release and our dev team lead expects that it will be at least a year for them to fully support RTL languages. Though the free OCR engine included with PDF-XChange Pro does support Hebrew RTL at this point.

What, if any, features does this program set have that are not found in Adobe Acrobat?

Does this program set include the ability to write macros that can manipulate pdf data or graphics?

Access to standard regular document Metadata is accessible through the Document properties panel, but additionally XMP files can be used to add custom metadata information panels using XMP files placed in folders which are:
%appdata%\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\
or
%programfiles%\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\

When the Editor performs search, it looks only in some fields of metadata which are common to regular document info dictionary, like Title, Authors, Keywords, etc.

We don't keep too close an eye on what Adobe does and some of their features are proprietary and outside of the !SO's PDF specification.

You cannot wire macros but you can use JavaScipt to add & manipulate PDFs and annotations but not to change the base content of the document.

1. My objective is to have a special metadata field into which I can put, for example, a name or series of names, or a category, and then to be later able to do a search of the meta data for all documents that contain a name or category. There are a lot of reasons why one would not want to use the file name or only the file name to carry that certain information.

2. I understand the reluctance of make an overall comparison, but perhaps you can tell us if this software has any unique proprietary functions of its own.

I would really like to purchase your software if you can describe some relatively unique functionality it provides, as compared to Adobe or to PDF Annotator

1. Unfortunately this is not supported in the software at the moment but our lead dev asked for us put in a feature request for it and we have.

2. We strictly adhere to the ISO PDF specification so none of our features go outside of that. The software is smaller, faster and less bloated the price point is far better than adobe products and our sales and tech support is surpassed by none. Other than that I'd encourage you download a trial copy and see what it can do for yourself.

Masood Khan In Adobe Acrobat we can do indexing of multiple pdf documents placed in a folder. Is this software capable of indexing?

No, unfortunately indexing is not yet supported, there is currently a feature request in with the development team. But we have no solid timeline on it at this time.

Thank you for your reply. If you do add a utility to create metadata and bulk search for metadata, you will have a sale.

You might also consider the following:

- pdf that self-destructs after a certain period of time or after a certain number of times being opened, and pdf that cannot be duplicated by a recipient.

- flexible export function from the main email clients to pdf.

- Ability to create form formats, that can reshape documents from other programs (sch as Word or Email) for standardized headers and footers and cover sheets and margins. Of course, applications, such as Word can do that; however, it is often desired to import into a pdf a batch of documents that come from diverse sources. The ability to have such imports put into a standardized format would be very useful and infuse a greater sense of control over document management.

You are definitely correct as to price, but I already have Acrobat Pro and PDF Annotator, and I do not think your software yet provides anything that they do not have.

You asked about the advantages over Adobe Acrobat. There actually quite a few, especially regarding the PDF-Xchange Print-to-PDF printer driver, as compared with Acrobat Distiller:

First of all, I've experienced many cases with complex/long documents where Acrobat Distiller crashes and fails to print to the document. PDF-Xchange consistently handles these cases perfectly. It is far more robust.

Additionally, the options that PDF-Xchange allows for PDF printing are far more flexible and extensive than those of Acrobat Distiller. A few examples of many:
- At time of print, you can set viewing for the resulting PDF - which page to open to, default magnification, default state of bookmarks and thumbnails bar, and defaults for virtually all other viewer preferences.
- At time of print, you have full control over which fonts to embed and which not to.
- At time of print, you can add watermarks, or overlay with any other PDF file
- At time of print, you can have it set to custom headers/footers, or to append/prepend another PDF doc to the output.
- At time of print, you can specify the metadata for the PDF document
- At time of print, you can specify how images should be resampled/compressed.

Now, of course, with Adobe Acrobat, you can load in a PDF file after it is printed and change these settings within Acrobat, and then resave. But here is the where PDF-Xchange shines:
1] You can set all of these settings up as defaults with PDF-Xchange, so that they will always be set automatically whenever printing a PDF file.
2] Further, you can set up PDF-Xchange it up for automatic no-dialog no-questions-asked printing. In this mode, you set a filename pattern so that the names of printed PDF documents will be autogenerated. When this is enabled, printing a PDF from any applications entails only invoking the print command (Ctrl-P or File/Print) and hitting Enter. No settings dialogs, no "save-as" dialog; as soon as Enter is pressed, PDF-Xchange outputs the document with the desired autogenerated name, and with all of the configuration settings. This makes it extremely easy to create large sets of PDF output, whether one is navigating a large data set by hand, or whether one is printing a series of documents via automation.

Joe M I have used PDF-Xchange Pro for a few years. One feature I like is it ability to split a 11x17 scanned document into two 8 1/2 x 11 pages.

The one feature that needs improvement is its Font Recognition. I can take a scanned page that has mostly a Times Roman 10 pt font. After recognition, the page will have different fonts that are in the new scanned document and most of them are showing as Ariel Mixed fonts. It is very accurate in its OCR function and very few word are misspelled. I don't know why it is not better in its Font recognition. I have tried different setting, used the regular OCR and the Enhanced OCR and I get the same results. Maybe I am missing something.

Right now I only use this program for page splitting.
