What are people saying about PE Explorer

Stefan Hauber On your webpage you say 64-Bit is supported (only) in the upcoming v2 (currently: v1.99). Is this upgrade free, with this offer?
Jan 19 2010 at 6:48pm Copy Link

Serge Vershin There won't be an upgrade price to v2 just because we change the version number. With this offer, as a registered customer, you will be entitled to free updates during 18 months from the date of purchase, including the upcoming v2 upgrade.

(18 months seems a lot of time, but when looking at your version-dates, versions 1.9x exist about 5 years...)

Serge Vershin Yes. We believe that v2 will appear before your 18-month support period expires.
Our versioning may seem a bit strange (we haven't reached the 2.0 point for 10 years), but the product has always been under continuous development for all these years. We simply don't like the idea to increment the major numbers without a reason.

Mica D. At first look it seems the correct program for me, trying to figure out, what DLLs coming with various EXE-files do and how I can use them by myself. But now, having downloaded your program and tried to use it I am not so sure any more. Perhaps you can help me...

My idea was to load the exe-file, than load the dll-file I am curious about, setting in PEExplorer breakpoints to all the exported functions of the dll (or better let PEExplorer do this automatically), than run the program from within PEExplorer and get informed automatically, if a DLL-function is used. Because Win32-DLLs do not have their expected input-parameters and output-return-value exported, as it seems to me, this can only figured out by inspecting the stack. If I remember right the DLL will consume some bytes from the stack (e.g. it's parameters) and before returning to the main-program will (optionally) put the return-value on the stack. (Before the main-program (or better the caller), which does know the dll-parameters and it's expected return-value puts the appropriate values on the stack and after the call gets the result-value back from it). In my idea PEExplorer would help me to figure this out somehow by having (1) the disassemblies of the caller (main.-program) and the called program (dll) and (2) the current stack-values.

So, can PEExplorer support me in this or a similar way to find actively find out the parameters of a dll, when having an exe-file using it? Perhaps there is an article or a step-by-step example how to do it.

Thanks a lot
Jan 23 2010 at 7:58pm Copy Link

Serge Vershin Not really. What you are talking about is called a debugger (google for OllyDbg). Unlike debuggers where code needs to be run to be analyzed, PE Explorer analyzes the procedures and libraries an executable uses without ever activating the executable itself.

Stefan Hauber You refer to extended Delphi support: The newer versions of Delphi create Unicode-programs, as far as I know starting with Delphi 2007. The feature-matrix on your website states, that PE-Explorer does not support Unicode. Does that mean, I am restricted when exploring Unicode-Delphi-programs?

So is Unicode supported in a soon-coming update?
Jan 25 2010 at 7:26pm Copy Link
0
Serge Vershin Restricted not more than when you exploring non-Delphi Unicode programs. By extended Delphi support we mean the ability to display in a hierarchical tree all the found VCL objects with all assigned properties and events - both in the resource editor and disassembler.
And yes, of course Unicode will be fully supported in v2.

disenchanted Hi, How capable is  this program for use in the reversing engineering of malware programs or suspected hostile code? At first glance, your program looks like it would be quite useful for this type of task. I am exploring a couple IT certifications, such as  SANS, "Reverse-Engineering Malware: Malware Analysis Tools and Techniques". And/or the "Certified Reverse Engineering Analyst"  by infosecinstitute. Questions: 1. how good is this program if dealing with malware or hostile code, which may or may not be obfuscated ? 2. Can it  identify methods/types of obfuscation if it encouters such? 3. can it alert one to any suspect code that "doesn't belong" [whose only purpose  would be that of a malware type process] in an otherwise "normal" executable file?  Thanks in advance.

Serge Vershin Some of your questions are addressed here: http://www.heaventools.co...curity.htm However, please understand that PE Explorer is not a sort of anti-virus software. It doesn't alert on hostile code, it doesn't care whether it belongs or not. It is just a tool that helps you collect as much information about the executable file as possible, not a magic tool.

P Davis On HeavenTools website there are 4 applications listed: PE Explorer, Resource Tuner, ResTuner Console, and FlexHex Editor. Does one need all of them to effectively analyze and modify exe's and dll's? How do they work together?
May 29 2011 at 4:31pm Copy Link

Experience P Davis,
When buying PEX there's no need for Resource Tuner.

FlexHEX is a different program (hex editor)
FlexHEX (contexts/import) tends to fail on Windows7 x64.
FlexHEX have not been updated since 2008 and uses hardware-id to activate.
Nonetheless this has yet never caused any problems for me.
I like the programs offered from Heaventools and I'm using them for personal use.

Jun 1 2011 at 5:09am Copy Link

Staley @Serge: It's not only online "activation" it's the tying of the license to an actual piece of hardware and needing permission to transfer it to another machine. I don't like paying this much for software, and then having to rely on the vendor to still be around/in business in the future to be able to reinstall or transfer the license.

I am not sure if there is a difference in what your company has planned for version 2 in the terms of activation (off-line or on-line and the term registration, as I have seen these terms used interchangeably which is even more confusing)

I guess what I am wanting to know is, if version 2.0 will force the user to either connect to an activation server and/or having to go to an activation page to enter a machine footprint hash/string value to generate a serial/registration number only good for that machine.

If that is the case... then as much as I like this software... I don't like not having the freedom to legally use the program self-sufficiently.

In the end it's punishing the legal licensees and the pirates are still going to get away with it. They will just find another way around the activation.

If I have misunderstood what is planned for version 2, then by all means, I would love to understand it. As I really do find this software useful.

Chris . I'm with Staley.

I've been waiting for PE Explorer to return to BDJ, but, the mention of ANY activation is a turn-off. Having a license key to run your software is acceptable, but, requiring your legitimate customers to have to activate their installation from your servers is just stabbing them after they give you their money.

I was going to purchase it, but, seeing HeavenTools going with Internet activation has resulted in one lost sale.

Matt Hi Serge,

In reading over the '63 older comments', there was much talk starting in January 2010 of PE Explorer version 2 and 64-bit file support.

At that time you said, "We believe that v2 will appear before your 18-month support period expires." You also said, "We do offer free upgrades to v2 for anyone who buys after 01/01/2010."

Does that still hold true? Will you still offer free upgrades to V2 for purchases made after 01/01/2010?

Thank you.

Matt Serge, in the older comments, there was much concern over the changing of licensing and possibility of activation in version 2.

Here on BDJ it is stated that PE Explorer is User Licensed and No Activation. Will this remain the same in version 2?

If not, can you describe the changes? Thank you.
Sep 10 2012 at 2:44pm Copy Link

Serge Vershin We *plan* on adding the activation requirement to prevent registration emails with keys from being widely blocked by misconfigured spam filters. That's a real pita when sending keys to gmail or yahoo accounts. This also helps provide instant service, that's it. We have no intention to punish the legal licensees.

Matt It is immeasurably more of a pain for us customers to have to deal with software activation.

I would think that the typical customer that PE Explorer would draw is the same type of PC user that often changes hardware configurations and re-installs operating systems.

Software activation and hardware footprints can many times over be a pain in the butt for us. The question we come to many as 'Do I upgrade to version 2 which requires activation just to get 64-bit file support or do I just stay with version 1.99 R6 and keep my User License?'.

$64.50 is probably not a lot to pay for this software, but moving on to an 'activation plan' for software that hasn't seen a single update in almost 3 years seems to be pushing the limits.

I ask anyone to read from the 'older comments' section. Thank you.
Sep 10 2012 at 7:33pm Copy Link

Serge Vershin Can't see any pain. You can keep changing hardware configurations and re-installing OS twice a day, the only difference is your license data will be stored on server under your user account.

Kelly Major Serge, That sounds reasonable if I understand you correctly. As a software developer myself I understand your concerns about piracy.

However, I agree with James. I have 2 workstations and 2 laptops, each with multiple VM's. I also create and destroy VM's frequently so I avoid software that doesn't have policies that give me the kind of flexibility I need to use the software without constant hassles.

Looking forward to the deal. - KEM

a a No updates for over 3 years, and every time this comes up the author says v2 with 64-bit support is being worked on and will be released. Only problem is v2 never materialises.

I find it hard to believe that it's really that difficult to add 64-bit support, particularly given that there are other products that have been out for a long time with this feature, and some of them free.

Prove me wrong that v2 is not just vapourware - perhaps a public alpha/beta release so we can really see what progress has been made in the 3-years of continuous (but hidden) work on it ?

DroidLuvr I've actually trialed this before, as well as the little brother "Resource Tuner" program from HeavenTools. While I am a programming newbie, I did find them helpful to learn a little more about how PE files work. I REALLY WANT to buy this software; HOWEVER:

With that said, when I read through the help documentation suggested on the installation page of the program, I found a plethora of comments about being able to work with the "NEW" XP format, and a very occasional reference to Vista... Then, I read back through all the comments and see how many times the developer has promised a new version with 64-bit support -- At Least as far back as the beginning of 2010... "See: Stefan Hauber On your webpage you say 64-Bit is supported (only) in the upcoming v2 (currently: v1.99). Is this upgrade free, with this offer? Jan 19 2010 at 6:48 p.m."

I don't want to knock the dev in any way, and again, I really am interested in this program, but it surely seems very outdated for the price... Maybe the developer could respond? or... maybe my fellow BDJ'ers could jump in and help me out here because I'm really only looking for a learning tool and possible "debugger" help tool, and even at 1/2 price, this is very expensive for me.

Thanks all for your input here as always :-)

Overtkill I concur. I too was looking at this utility, but not for the cash he's asking for, and especially not considering that even by the time of this reply, the dev hasn't published an updated version since 2009. IMHO, $39 should be top shelf price for the current version.

He must have moved on to other apps.

Serge Vershin Well, I understand how it sounds but we ARE working on v2, trying our best to shed its vaporware status but still cannot offer a firm date or timeline as of yet. But we can promise you that we will emerge from a protracted and troubled 64-bit development hell ;) The disassembler part is a real challenge that puts the brakes on the project.

J Hi Serge,

Thank you for your reply!

It's good to know you are still actively developing PE Explorer.

I'm looking forward to version 2 with 64-bit support.

Thanks again!

Gonzo "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 18 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted."
Any chance you can offer a free upgrade to v2 for customers that purchase during this promotion? I really wouldn't want to have to pay again for 64 bits support.
Thanks!

Chris I would have purchased this but PayProGlobal is a no go for me since they never will process my orders.

Edit:

I was contacted by them with a different payment processor and was able to purchase.
