What are people saying about Photocopier Expert 7

J L Is the license lifetime? Does it include all the future upgrades for free?
Sep 5 2009 at 12:35am Copy Link

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi,

All minor upgrades (7.xx) are free.
Major upgrades are free if the year of purchase is the same.
Otherwise, there's a small upgrade fee.
Photocopier Expert 7 is brand new, Photocopier Expert 6 was release two years ago, you can expect release 7 to have the same cycle of life. Minor releases are not only bug corrections, there is often new functions added.

The upgrade price is quite fair : Registered users (regardless their release, 4, 5 or 6) are asked less than 10 euros (about $14 at current rate) to get a new licence. (A full standard new licence, the old one is not replaced, they can use the old one on another PC).

Best regards,
Gilles / Neogie

Gilles GUEDIKIAN You're right, a small bug, I just fixed it (The checkbox "Original size scan and print") was reversed.
I'll upload a new 7.13 release right now.

J L Hi,

Now it seems OK.
I found another bug. If I use the "Clean around the selection" button (I do not know if this is the exact English translation) and I save the image as pdf, then the image is deformed. It is OK if I save it as an image file.

Thanks for your answer. I will consider buying it.

Gilles GUEDIKIAN You're right, it seems the Horizontal DPI was somehow lost in the process. Anyway, that's corrected and up to date on the server. (Release 7.14).

Adrian Williams Hello Giles,
I bought Photocopier expert v6 on 7th March 2009 when it was on BDJ. How do I get my free upgrade to v7 as described in an earlier post?

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi Adrian,
I'm glad you found your licence.
I still have to send a mailing to announce the free upgrades for 2009 buyers.

Best regards,
Gilles.

B B (1) What are the terms of the license? On how many computers can the program be installed for one user?
(2) Do you have any plans for making the program able to scan and load more than one page at a time (perhaps by making the program automatically scan and save each page in a multiple-page document into the queue)?

B B Clarification regarding my reason for asking question #2 in my previous post: When I used Photocopier Expert and my scanner's sheet feeder to scan a two-page document, the result was that Photocopier Expert discarded the scan of the first page and loaded the scan of the second page. This was even though I had activated the "Automatically add to queue" option shown in the program's "Advanced" tab.

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Licence is one per computer, however, if you use it on several computers, one at a time, it's ok.

Photocopier Expert does of course support feeders and duplex, and scan's automatically every documents in the ADF directly to the queue.

Automatically add to the queue is only meant for flatbed scanners.

About your feeder problem, are you using a real Twain driver and not a WIA one?
WIA and feeders often don't work when UI is disabled. (WIA is only poorly twain compatible).

(This is not really the best place for support, you can contact me directly on the website with the support form or live support if I'm online)

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Release 7.18 is out.
It add a few optimisations (Scanner is only initialised on first launch, then parameters are memorised for instant start)
Added a "Recto/verso" function (allow scanning several sheets verso, return the stack, scan the other side.), PE will automatically rearrange the queue order.

Sep 11 2009 at 4:51am Copy Link

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi, there's no enlargement when printing, that caused too many 1:1 ratio copy problems.
However I'll add a pre-print resize in percentage in the future (in a minor release)

Mitch K Over the years, I have had 3 different flatbed scanners. Unfortunately, they rarely filled my needs and usually end up as a paperweight on my desk. I don't know who writes the application software that comes bundled with scanners, but I am sure they never had to use it. If they did, they would realize how poorly written and underpowered the software is. My latest scanner is a Canon. It has all sorts of bells and whistles and has a button to scan to a PDF file. My hope was to make my home as paperless as possible by scanning my documents to PDF. I was again disappointed because Canon's scanner software fell short. I looked at other scanning software and couldn't find anything that met my needs and was reasonably priced.

I just about gave up and then I luckily found "Photocopier Expert 7" on BDJ. I installed the software last night and was pleasantly surprised at how well this software works. Scanning and saving to PDF was painless! It will even scan at 100% size...something I was never able to easily accomplish with the bundled software. (I am sure we've all been there...you scan something only to realize it is poster sized and the file size is 8MB).

I really love how Photocopier Expert easily appends multiple scans to the same file. I also like how easily you can remove unwanted parts. I haven't even scratched the surface of Photocopier's capabilities, but I am definitely going to buy it. Photocopier Expert is simple and powerful at the same time! The PDF file sizes were very reasonable. I spent about 2 hours yesterday scanning to PDF and I am well on my way to a paperless home!

fran harter Based on Mitch's comments, I checked out this software also.

The 2 interfaces (& the quick "toggle" between the two), are a nice touch.
- Simple and
- Complete.

I have had about 6 scanners and they always come with some
scaled-down editions like LE [limited edition] or an SE edition.

The bulk of my scanning is to make copies of receipts, for mail-in rebates. or copies of documents.
So this Neogie offering looks like it will work excellent, for my needs.

The SIMPLE interface of Photocopier 7 is great for a quick,
"scan and print" of whatever is on the scanner bed.

Can't wait until monday, when this deal starts.

Patrick Leahy I tested this a week ago. I've been playing with computers for 30 years, seen it all in the way of scanner software. VueScan was good but so expensive I never purchased. I was impressed with this program, great features that simply work.
You can't beat the price for what this program does.

Glen H Useful utility at a good price. Auto/manual scan deskew is handy, along with the adjustment options and it's simple and quick enough for all to use. Will also be grabbing a license. Thanks BDJ and NEOGIE.

Mike G Has more document editing/management features than other scanner utilities in it's price range (even before the BDJ discount). Among other things, PE saves to multiple formats, does OCR, allows me to clean up scanned images and easily removes unwanted borders. Support is very quick and the developer is sensitive to customer suggestions. I'm adding PE7 to my toolbox.

Don Goddard Late last night I purchased Photocopier Expert to use on my NetBook. I really appreciate Bits du Jour introducting this product to me. I dislike the bloatware that most scanner manufacturers want you to install with their products. Photocopier Expert is a great alternative! I have a couple of questions: Do the terms of licence allow me to install Photocopier Expert on my desktop computer as well? If the licence is only good for one computer, are there restrictions against purchasing an additional licence under this promotion? Thanks.
Apr 19 2010 at 5:24am Copy Link

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Don,
a licence is on a per computer basis.
There's no limit to the promotion, you can purchase as many as you want.

anthonyraynor? I don't know that I would add this to my software collection at full price, but at the discount it is a nobrainer. It has a lot of functionality, is reasonably stable, but I did illicit a crash during the first few minutes of use. The OCR is mediocre, but even OmniPage which is over $200 is only marginally better. Didn't want to scan from the flatbed, but ADF was good. For the price, give it a try. I like the document manager coming in the next few days, but it has no correction abilities and just want fit my needs.

Peter Margol I tried it and it works like a charm! One thing though: the deskew algorithm should be really improved. At 600dpi B/W and cca 3-4 grades of skew, after deskewing there's an obvious edge running through the middle of the characters. There must be a better algorithm for turning images. I am really hesitating t buy the deal but this is important for me and in case it's not fixed, I'd have no use for it. Otherwise, the software is really sweet and packed with working features.

Philip Green This program is just what I need. Just installed a Lexmark X4650 which comes with the worst software ever conceived, including no possibility of a preview.

Only negative comment is that the help menu is a little weak and there should be a way to call up the help from the screen.

Really a great program that solves the problem of crummy drivers delivered with inexpensive scanners/printers.

Roberto when i choose to print 2 documents per page in the queue, the selected images are resized. (im scaning ID cards and Photocopier rescale them to a big size).
i want to "merge" the 2 sides of the ID in one page, and print with the same scale, 100%.
There is some workaround for this?
Jul 26 2011 at 2:52am Copy Link
0
Gilles GUEDIKIAN What you can do is scan the ID on the whole page and keep some blank space.
Then scan the other side.
Crop the other side to keep only the id part, and add to the queue.

Open the editor on the first side, and paste the cropped side.
In the editor you can paste anything that's on the queue.

Roberto great trick.

i saw that I can print with the 8 document per page, and id is scaled to 1/8 of the page size (looks fine like that).

as suggestion, i with to have a "smoother" results after straighten up a scaned image. (the auto button does the job, and remove margins button is great also)

really useful tool, recomended.

disenchanted Easily the most useful scanner program out there.

This is the type of scanner program that SHOULD come with every scanner.

I have tested it with a regular flatbed scanner and a flatbed with an automatic document feeder.

In each case, it worked great!

There are several features/functions that improve the brightness, contrast, and such of any scanned document .

Will be getting another copy when it's offered again.

It cannot handle text, it's not designed to do that.
You can't open any Word document with PE7.

Paul Crousel Thanks Gilles Guedikian for replying,
I know that the soft do not handle word processing, but images can be loaded and saved as pdf, wanted to find out if could be done with other then images?

so if i buy it then if the new Photocopier expert supports loading word... will be the upgrade be free?

it will be great if there is windows right click integration of Photocopier Expert since image can be opened in the soft.

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi,
the upgrade is free under conditions (purchase less than 6 month).

I can assure you that PE7 will never support loading text documents, it's not the purpose of the software.

Right click integration does not suit every user. You can however do drap&drop... On PE7 anywhere or on the queue (then it goes directly to the queue)

Joe M I tried the trial version. I was disappointed there was not a 64 bit version. My Epson 4490 scanner worked OK in TWAIN mode put hung up trying WIA. OCR was fast and accurate. program had to many hang ups. Had to use task manager to close the program.
This is not a program for me.
Jul 29 2011 at 11:49am Copy Link

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Joe, as PE7 is Twain compliant, Wia is only a backup solution.
Wia offer only a very poor Twain compatibility.
If you have crash problem, it's likely because of the driver.
Not all drivers are very respectful of the Twain standard.

WIA should be natively supported in a future release (As scanner brands often leave 2-3 year old scanner without any further Twain release (Kudos to Canon and Brother, that have an excellent driver policy...)

Alan I want to buy 2 copies, one for me and one for a friend. Do I actually have to purchase it twice? I don't see a way to order 2 copies.

HJ B 1. There is provision for adding a "copyright" line to the scanned documents. When tried, the line was placed at the top of the document.
a) Is it possible to have the line at the bottom of the document?
b) Is automatic page numbering supported?
c) How about insertion of a date?

2. The fax instructions are sparse.
a) Can one assemble a document before faxing?
b) Is this only a fax send function, i.e., no fax receive?
c) Is it possible to send to multiple recipients, without restarting the process for each recipient?
d) Is a copy of faxed documents saved and a log kept of fax attempts and successes?

3. The program permits use of a printer located on a LAN or on another computer. Can a scanner be used that is on a Lan or located on a different computer. There does not appear to be a browse function for the purpose of setting the scanner/

4. Is there a provision whereby, if double-sided in enabled, blank sides will be ignored?

5. When a document is displayed, how can one tell whether it was the result of a preview or of a full scan?

6. The OCR instructions are sparse. It appears to remove formatting, but the OCR function works well.

a) Can a multipage document be scanned and then OCR'd in its entirety?

b) If so, can it be arranged so that the pages will be named in a way that correlates the scanned version file name and page to the ocr version file name and page?

Gilles GUEDIKIAN a) no the position is fixed
b) If you mean in the filename, yes
c) there's a tag for the filename (see the help file, tips section)

2)
you can do anything you want before faxing, faxing is just a different way of printing for PE7
For the rest, as the fax engine is Microsoft Fax, everything else is in the Microsoft user interface.

3)
Lan or local, that's up to the driver.
PE7 is currently tested with a LAN MFC Brother Scanner.

4)
That's a driver parameter, if your drivers allows it.

6) No OCR is page by page.

JW Can you easily create a new 'document' which contains sections of a number of other documents, of differing types?
For instance, can it create a document with segments of 'Word', adding in sections from a PDF along with images (PNG or JPG) be they scanned or photos?

Gilles GUEDIKIAN No, PE7 works only with scanned or imported images.
Importing Text documents is not its purpose.

Regards,
Gilles.

Pascal User I tried the product in French. The character recognition is very approximate. Moreover it is not ultilisée in photocopying and therefore does not improve the discrimination of alpha-numeric characters. It does not seem to serve much.

Colin Pritchard I have downloaded and it looks impressive. Is there an instruction manual or video of how to work it?

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi Colin,

in the advanced tab, there's a help button that invokes the help file.
Although the screen captures are not 100% up to date, it should provide the needed help.

Otherwise, just drop an email and I can explain.

John Barnett Are there any differences with this version to the one that is offered on your web site. Is the license for the one on web site for the user as opposed to this one being for only one computer. The reason I ask is because I have 2 computers.

Chris Neumann Hello! I purchased Photocopier Expert V7 in November of 2010. Is that the same version?

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Hi,

I can't say about the Epson 2540, PE7 should work with any scanner as long as the twain driver is properly installed. Don't let Windows install it's basic drivers, they are useless.

You have to download the latest twain from Epson.

Colin Pritchard Thank you for your reply to my earlier question. I've bought it now and am finding it super.
Is there any way I can print out the 'help' section so I have something to refer to when playing with the myriad of features.

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Colin I'm afraid there's no way to "flatten" a windows help file...

Next time, I'll choose a PDF file, it's easier to do and to read sometimes!

L Spark Tried to purchase with Firefox browser. Just said "processing order for long period." Tried Opera, and it was able to process the order, but charged the full price, even though the discount information was present on the page, so I cancelled the purchase. Suggestions?

Chris Neumann I kinda wanted to know the answer to my question, that I posted over 9 hours ago, before this deal is over.

Joe M Chris Neuman. On their website it says it is version 7.222 : New major release.
If you bought this as version 7 back in November of 2010, I would think you should be able to upgrade to this 7.222 version. I wonder why after almost 6 years it is not at version 8.
The Fine Print says, Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only.
Maybe someone from Neogie will answer soon.

Chris Neumann Thanks, Joe! You are right about their version indication on their website, but that is strange too: usually, as in software world, they would have to name it version 8 or later to call it a "major release." Version 7.222 should be just an update from any 7.x version. But I just downloaded their "trial" file and it is identical to the one that I purchased back in 2010. Very strange.

Gilles GUEDIKIAN Joe, Chris, the real question is : does it need to evolve ?
There will be a next release some day, but I will not make it happen for 2-3 bogus functions and a relooking as many software maker do...

And as for now, I don't know what to change to make a 8 relevant.

Chris Neumann Actually, Gilles, the original question was whether this version is any different than that I purchased back in 2010. That question was still not directly answered, but from my own file comparison and your evading response after ignoring it all day, I am pretty certain now that there is no difference. Thanks for your help!
