What are people saying about Phrase Trainer

Matt Hello,

Phrase Trainer is a really nice piece of software, as is all of the Desktop Metronome line! I purchased this and the others on an earlier BDJ sales.

Alexander also provides excellent and very friendly customer support!

Check out his great guitar playing on YouTube!

Thank again!

RC Although intended for music practice, I'll be using this product to time expand and time compress spoken word audio for use in digital video editing. What's nice is the ability to save your audio after applying your modifications. A WAV file will be exported at the same quality as your input (an MP3 file may be exported with reduced bit rate). Program is very easy to use.

Mr Dave If you're a musician, or an aspiring musician, you need this! Works well with usable sound quality (best I've heard in programs like this).

I like that I can change pitch by musical steps (by 1 guitar fret or 1 piano key) AND in smaller increments, so I can match the song to my tuning or try a song in a different key. I can speed up and slow down as much as needed. Sound quality gets worse the slower you go but who cares, this is to help you learn a song or riff. It's far better to play at a speed that lets you hit the notes & timing accurately, than to hear great sound quality.

An example of the powerful speed trainer: I selected a phrase to loop, and set it to start playback at 70% of normal speed. Every time through the loop the speed increased by 1%, all the way up to 110%. I can barely notice the speed increase, but by the end I can play the phrase faster than needed, ready to record or play it with a band. You can choose the start/end speeds, % increase, how many times the loop plays before speed increases. There is also a similar Pitch Trainer tool, that changes the key of the music instead of the speed. Good tool for practicing scales.

Nice stuff: it can remember settings for each song. Recent Files list gets you back to what you were working on quickly. It can load MP4 files without forcing you to convert them to MP3 or WAV. It can save a modified song so you can share it with your band or friends. There's reverb and EQ. Different filters (with adjustable center frequency and width) so you can remove most of the instrument you're learning and turn the song into a backing track. Or use filters and to highlight the part you're trying to learn.

My only suggestions: it would be cool to use the speed trainer with the sounds from GrooveBox (another great program from this company). But I can always record what GrooveBox plays and then load the file into Phrase Trainer. Also, other programs can invert the phase of one channel -- when you switch to Mono instead of Stereo, this tends to remove sounds in the center - typically vocals and solos.

Desktop Metronome makes great products, you can tell they were designed by a musician to meet a musician's needs. I find myself using this one, Chords & Scales, and GrooveBox a lot. Chord Pad is an easy way to create simple backing tracks and develop song ideas. So far, they all work great in Windows 10.

Greg User To any guitarists/bass players reading this:

I purchased this several years ago and it's truly indispensable as a practice tool. Have a tough lick you're trying to transcribe? Just mark the start of the loop, the end of the loop, and slow it down as much as 50% instantly. Have it figured out at 50%, but having trouble playing it at full speed? No problem - just use the speed trainer. Use this to set the start speed and the end speed, and by what percent you'd like the speed increased by each time the loop plays. Using the example of a start speed of 50% and an end speed of 100% with a 1% increase, the loop will play 50 times, each time 1% faster than the time before. You also have choices once full speed is reached (stay at full speed, reverse back down, etc). I believe the speed trainer has to be toggled on to use (click on 'view' then 'pitch/speed trainer').

I'm sorry this was a long comment, but this software is really helpful to musicians. It's a deal at full price - 50% off is insane. I have no affiliation with the author.
