Dan P I'm giving this a try and right now my observation is that "it works great". I'd appreciate hearing other comments.

soo mi To the folks at Portals, a few questions. Since there is little that can be discovered about your company (via a web search, or from the lack of an "about our company" page on your website) other than the same, canned statements prepared by your marketing team: 1) Is your company a new start-up? 2) How long have you been in business? 3) If you are a start-up, how well funded are you? (<== e.g., how likely are you to stay in business, over the long-term?) 4) If you are a start-up, who is backing your company? (<== e.g., what is their commitment to ensuring your success / viability) 5) Your website states: "Portals operates on top of peer-to-peer network of independent peoples’ computers – a decentralized VPN, or dVPN for short." (<== see 7, below, if there is more than one source of "independent peoples' computers") -- How do you acquire access to these "independent" computers? -- How will you be able to maintain access to a sufficient number of computers for your service to be viable? (<== e.g., bandwidth, load, duration, etc.) -- Who owns/operates them? -- How do you ensure that these "independent" computers are not a security/privacy leak to other organizations? (<== e.g., government agencies, Google, Facebook, a hacker in their mom's basement, etc.) 6) What differentiates your company from other decentralized VPN providers (<== what unique value do you offer), such as: -- Tachyon's blockchain-based ecosystem decentralized VPN -- Exidio's Sentinel Ecosystem / Sentinel node network -- The TOR browser / Onion Router project 7) The Mysterium Network [ https://mysterium.network/blog/portals-vpn-partnership/ ] has announced on their website that your company's service is running on top of their distributed / decentralized VPN network ("Portals is a dVPN application that plugs directly into Mysterium Network’s pool of nodes.") -- Is your service exclusively reliant on the Mysterium Network? -- What is your company's ability to survive if their is a failure (either business-wise, or technical) with Mysterium Network / the individuals who have chosen to participate in the Mysterium Network? Please feel free to offer additional information about your company / service, that will help us understand your niche in this industry, your unique value offering, and your long-term viability.

CL To Portals: Can you please clarify the "Fine Print" Statement:
It states: "After you purchase Portals it may be used for 12 months and will not function after that unless you renew your subscription"
But then later it states:
"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for the lifetime of the product."
Is this license (purchase) for 12 months or is it for lifetime use and Upgrade?
I am potentially interested in buying the software.
Thank You.

Portals Hi soo mi,

Thank you for the questions.

1/2) Portals has been around for 2+ years now.
3/4) Company funding and list of investors is private information, available to investors.
5) As you've mentioned, Portals runs on Mysterium nodes network. Please refer to https://www.portals.netwo...nd_Privacy for your privacy concerns.
6) That would be a lot of comparisons to make. In general most of dVPNs require quite a high level of technical expertise and consume a lot of time of the user. We believe that VPN should be "invisible" part of privacy toolkit, i.e. user should almost forget he's using VPN, and spend close to 0 time managing VPN. So we aim for simplicity. As per TOR project - this project has it's own niche, as it's aimed at ensuring high level of anonymity using multi-hops. The problem with TOR is that it's a) very slow (as you're doing multi-hops) b) your ISP / other services like Google can detect you're using TOR and gives you red-flag right away (e.g. asking for captchas on each step, or reporting to authorities in case you're in sensitive country/region). c) a lot of TOR exit nodes are known to be operated by US government agencies (in Portals case you can opt to use residential IPs which is much harder for government to take over and control). d) there has been reports that 60/70% cases IPs can be revealed when using TOR, see for instance https://resources.infosec...rk-follow/
That said, TOR is still great and has its own use cases (e.g. accessing dark-net). There's no 100% security on the web (or in fact with anything in life), one can only minimize the risk.
As per "what if Mysterium network goes down": a) it's highly unlikely as they have quite a vibrant community of node operators which is constantly increasing b) the network itself is (almost) decentralized and is moving to 100% decentralization. That means Mysterium will not be needed for network to operate (same as Vitalik Buterin is not needed for Ethereum to operate) c) all Mysterium source code is open sourced, so anyone can deploy the same network in case there's a need.
