Max Murkel 45 / 90 bucks for a 12-months license? Thanks, no.

Techtoysavvy To be fair, I understand the terms are perpetual license with maintenance and support for 12 months. After 12 months upgrades and support will cost more.

Bernhard Rutkowsky Hello To make it clear the Pro licenses work for one year, this is the way we decided to go after testing a lot of other options. Please keep in mind that this Product allows you to sync an unlimited amount of data directly and securely between your own computers and it has 20 GB of Online storage Space included.  Perhaps you might have noticed that we have a free version which is limited to 1 GB  and we have a referral reward system which allows users to get rewarded with a full PowerFolder Silver version. By the way the https://www.powerfolder.c...ilver.html is also a part of this promotion and will have reduced prices by 50%, but it includes only 1 GB of Online Space and is  to sync directly between your own computers.

Stan Are there more differences between the bdj and the https://www.powerfolder.c...-Gold.html offer? Bernhard wrote about 20 GB online storage, the "original" gives 50 GB. How many computers are included with the bdj-license? Will the software discontinue to work after 12 month without renew the license?

Bernhard Rutkowsky We changed the amount of online storage to 50 GB yesterday that amount is for all PowerFolder gold versions. Since it is directly linked to this Online storage space the licneses will expire after 12 month

Keith Norton If I buy 2 of these ProGold Licences, can I link 10 computers, or must I buy a single Gold for the first 5 and individual licenses for the additional machines?

Exactly what happens at 12 months? Does the software stop working? Does it revert to a "crippled" version? Does the program continue but the "cloud" and support disappears?

Nitin Thakkar Still waiting for an answer - what happens after 12 months ?

Bernhard Rutkowsky @Keith you can use 2 gold versions and will be able to to sync 10 computers or you can go for a combination of gold and silver versions to cover the amount of licneses you need.

@Nitin after 12 month you need to renew the licenses or the licenses will become free versions which means they are limited to 1 GB.

John H I have been looking for a program to replace my Dropbox service so I could avoid the monthly fee and because I do not need off site storage.

This is not it because of the need to repurchase a license every year.

This is probably a good program if you need HIPPA quality security which Dropbox and others cannot provide.

Adrian Williams John - take a look at Spideroak if you're looking for secure storage similar to dropbox. Unlimited users 100GB for $75 (with a discount code). So, if you wan't to lose the secure encrypted offline backup, and have unlimited data storage, powerfolder pro gold looks good value with the BDJ discount.

Frank Stephens This has unlimited transfers but only 50GB of storage, but if the other computers are online it can use their storage space. Free Windows Live Mesh 2011 (supports Macs) uses free 25GB SkyDrive, but only 5GB is available for Live Mesh. Free Glide OS 4.0 supports numerous devices, 30GB, or 250GB for $50/year. There are lots of other free online storage services.

Bernhard Rutkowsky Hello the online space is optional you have unlimted sync and share directly between your own computers and you can select which data is stored online, you also can invite other users or free users, also we do not limit the bandwidth like most services do who offer large amounts of online space or even unlimited. Some people dont like to store their data "somewhere"online especially when it comes to business data. Depending on the solution and setup you choose you do not need to thrust anyone except yourself with PowerFolder.

Ryan Smyth Is the license like a SaaS license? i.e. The program expires after 1 year and you can't use it unless you renew?

Edit: Read more on it -- it's the backup storage... so yes. That's a service.

Thomas Nowak Dear Captain Obvious,

Similar to dropbox PowerFolder also offers a free edition with 2 GB.

Comparing this offer to Dropbox paid offer it's
- Dropbox: $99/y for 50 GB
- PowerFolder: $45/y for 50 GB

So it's obvious that you save more than 50% compared to the dropbox offer.

Petr After reviewing PowerFolders here at BitsDuJour and on your web site, I am still not clear about the benefits, pros and cons of your software. How does it differ from competitive offerings?

Some Questions:
#1. Online document editing - what kind of documents? .Doc, .Docx, GoogleDocs, XLS? Please provide details and limitations.

#2. Direct Sync between computers - If between Mac and Windows, are files converted?

#3. Please provide a link for Apple and Android apps at AppStore and Google Play. I'd like to check out features listed there.

#4. If doing a backup on-premises, is is just a file backup or a full backup to restore to a new machine? What kind of devices are supported for on-premise backup?

#5. Is all data encrypted before leaving my computers? Is data encrypted when stored in your cloud?

Thanks you.

Bernhard User Hello Petr, My Name is Bernhard Rutkowsky and i am working for PowerFolder.

1# Our online document editing supports the most common file formats this includes doc docx, xls. ppt. also libre office formats even so i am not sure about presentations of libre office.

2# We do not alter files when syncing we do ignore some system files but beyond this we do a 1:1 copy. but to be honest i am not sure what kind of conversation you could think of since the file formats are mostly compatible, if you could specify the question i can ask our development.

3# you can find both links here:
https://www.powerfolder.com/download/

4# We automatic backup is supported for Win / Mac / Linux systems you can do a file backup of any folder but as far as i know it is not possible to backup the full c:/ path in windows but all directories below this. In our experience most of our customers prefer to backup their documents or their user data and not so much the operating system, most Operating systems come with a reset function anyway so restoring the OS is often not so useful. Of course this is something to be discussed but we decided against this kind of function, since most users just want to protect their personal files and some other selected folder/directories.

Automatic backup is supported with our desktop applications on Win, Linux and MAC

5# PowerFolder encrypts the traffic and the cloud harddrives are protected by encryption systems as well. The Single file is not stored encrypted on our systems, but we do offer the possibility to setup your own private cloud on your own computers/servers if you have a general distrust towards clouds in general. Setting up your own private on-premise cloud is even possible with our free version for up to 5 users and no meta data or files are stored oust side your own servers if you go this way.

I hope this helps you to decide if we can provide a suitable solution.

John H I am surprised that this offering is getting so little attention.

You should shamelessly advertise this as a Dropbox replacement.

You should also mention the free version without the cloud storage. I want the simple syncing without the risk of cloud storage.

I am currently using the free version of AeroFS but Power Folder offers better options for the individual user.

I do proprietary design and it is not good practice to associate my data with a platform built exclusively to mine user data. So I am not part of the Google ecosystem but do use an Android device with a few side loaded apps for Kindle from Amazon. You should offer your Android app directly on your site without requiring the user to sleep with Google. Or at least offer through Amazon.

And while still rough around the edges, I have moved to a Windows 8.1 phone where the apps are not invasive like Android Apps. I use it for business not media or gaming. So please, make an app for windows phone.

I am currently rebuilding my computer system for the new year and Power Folder offers some better options that I am considering.

Could you also be specific about where your servers are located.

Bob Levy What is the difference between you and Dropbox. Dropbox is a transparent solution to backup/availability between all my devices. I have used their web site to recover older versions.
Why Powerfolder?
In a secure European Cloud? Wow, with all the issues and unrest, is this good or bad?

Bernhard Rutkowsky Hello John, our servers are located in germany/ bayern. A windows app is currently created but i cannot give you an ETA on this. We actually try to not promote ourselfs as an replacement even so we are. What is important to us is that we are not a me2 product but have our origin in 2004 as a open source project.

Hello Bob,
We are located in Germany we have not that much unrest here at the moment.
If it is good or bad depends on your point of view.

Some features which create a difference to dropbox:

- you do not need to change your filestructure and you can sync any folder on your computer. dropbox requires you to move your files.

- We support peer to peer sync between devices online and in lan, we also can download from multiple sources and we only transfer those parts of a file which actually have changed. This results in faster transfers if a file is changed

-Does Dropbox provide documents editing? With PowerFolder you can edit online in the web or locally and can keep the files were you like them to have.

-You can actually use our product to backup your files

- There are some other features but instead of naming them here i recommend that you test the product and if you think it is suitable for you and then you can decide if it is for you.

This are only the advantages if you go for the cloud, our on-premise versions you will have a extremely larger amount of benefits but this is not the product in discussion

Petr Thank you for your reply and details.

Is the product you are offering at BitsDuJour and/or at your website the same as the open source edition?

If 'yes', I do like the comfort of having my critical data on a backup/sync platform that gives me source code in case of long-term problems (e.g. your company not being in business 5 years from now). I've had backups at cloud services that have gone out of business, so this is a comfort.

I would be interested in setting up a hybrid backup using both cloud and my own 'cloud' drives. Is such a configuration possible?

If 'no', what is the difference in features between the open source edition and your commercial offerings? Thank you.

Pavi Johnson Hi, looks interesting.

Will 2 licenses work for the following use-case:
1) Personal backup/sync of files
2) Sharing/backup of files with my business partner.

This means that I would like to sync/cloud some files only for myself, and have another set of folders to backup/sync with another individual with the second license. Will this work?

Best, /Pavi

Pavi Johnson Hi, a few more quick questions:

1) Do renewals get the same price and 1 TB storage?
2) Is this service "zero knowledge"? Are there any audits, etc. on the open source code to show this?
3) Is it GDPR compliant?

Looks like a great alternative, but need to make sure it is acceptable to my organization, and that AES encrypted files are not visible to PowerFolder.
Best, /Pavi

Bernhard Rutkowsky 1) You may go for the 1TB or 200GB version afterwards
2) PowerFolder has the quality seal "IT-Security made in Germany" als it undergos regularly several external security organisations, such as the BSI
3) Yes, of course

Pavi Johnson Hi, just to clarify this offer is for the 2 TB which isn't obvious from either the description or the reply.

Pavi Johnson Well, I got 2 licenses and now I must request a refund via the 14 day return policy. Too much wrong to mention, not even possible to test!

I would have submitted a support ticket, but the support login doesn't work, the support reset doesn't send any link, and there is no email address to contact anyone!

Please give me an email address where I can contact you to finalize the refund. Best, /Pavi
