What are people saying about QSnipps Cross-Platform

S B QSnips looks interesting. I like its integration, comment field, and tags. But I don't see many details at, and I may be inferring the wrong things from the screenshots. A few questions, please.

1) How complex can a "QSearch" be? Is it possible, for example, to search on snippet content?

2) are the snippets themselves simple text or are they templates? Do they have intelligence?

3) can snippets have active place holders, e.g., do they allow for automatically inserting a date or allow the user to insert a string determined when using the snippet?

4) can snippets take parameters or replacement parameters so when they are used, for example, the user can insert a specific name can be constructed in several places?

5) can snippets be inserted within other snippets (can they be nested)?

Thank you very much!

Gabi L Hi!

I'll go straight into answering your questions :

1) Yes, this feature is available in the latest version of QSnipps

2) At the moment simple text

3) This feature will be implemented in the next releases of QSnipps

No 4 and 5: At the moment no, but I'm working to add the nested snippets feature.

Thank you for your questions.

If you have more, please ask. :-)

S B @Gabi L,

QSnips seems to be under very active development and seems to be a very useful aid right now (even though I won't use its powerful cross-platform or sharing capabilities). You've been quick, candid, and knowledgeable. Count me in.

Gabi L Thank you for the kind words.
If you have other sugestions that you would like to see included in future versions of QSnipps, please let me know.

Faisal Humayun Hi Gabi L,
I currently use a combination of thornsoft's clipmate, and the web repository of code snippets

However, I was looking for a dedicated solution more versatile than (free) (free)
and cheaper than ($30) -- which supports importing snipplr code snippets.

I'm very intrigued by Qsnipps because it offers linux support -- a platform I work in very often. If Qsnipps can begin a journey that will eventually match the features offered by SnipIt Pro during the course of its development, I will happily partake in its evolution as well contribute to major upgrades. I understand that you've got to maintain code for 3 platforms, however, so it would be nice to hear your ideas regarding future features intended for Qsnipps.

Gabi L @Faisal Humayun
Thanks for the comment.

Ideas for future releases... hmm, tough one :)

I can't tell you exactly what features will be added in the next versions, because some of the new features are requested by clients.

However I can tell you some of the features that I'm working on:

1) Improved code editor
2) Support for importing snippets from websites like snipplr
3) More syntax highlighters
4) Support for localization (not on the top list)
5) Real-time snippet updates between multiple computers (if user A and user B share the same database and user A adds/modifies a snippet, user B will get notified about the update as it happens)

Also when adding a new major feature I need to find the best way to keep the UI as simple as it can be.

Faisal Humayun Thank you for the prompt and informative reply Gabi. I'll start test driving the program and will contact you further if I have any question, concerns or requests.

Wayne Hamilton Hi

Is it possible (or can it be in the future) to drag and drop the sniippets from the editing window into the code editor?
May 16 2011 at 7:29pm Copy Link
Faisal Humayun @Wayne Hamilton Well you just took the thunder out of my exact request :) it would be great for the snippets would also retain indenting.

I've already decided to support Gabi and truly look forward for the upcoming releases.
May 16 2011 at 8:37pm Copy Link
Peter Margol Is the license valid for all computers of the same user or separate license is needed for each computer?
May 16 2011 at 8:53pm Copy Link
Marco De Luca Just downloaded the Windows Trial Version, but Kaspersky doesn't like it. It says, that QSnipps "...tries to integrate a module into all processes..." (translated from German).

What exactly is QSnipps doing, that triggers such an alert?
May 16 2011 at 10:29pm Copy Link
Gabi L @Wayne Hamilton
Thanks for the sugestion. I'll try to make it possible in the next versions.

Thank you for your support!

That's very strange! QSnipps isn't trying to do anything except creating the main database storage for the snippets and this happens at the first start-up of the program. Could you please send me the Kaspersky log related to this problem at to further investigate this problem?

Thank you all guys and waiting for other questions or sugestions to improve the next versions of QSnipps.
LUDSOFT - May 16 2011 at 10:48pm Copy Link
Dan P I'm trying the trial version of QSnipps. It allowed me to create 2 Categories of the same name and when I went to delete the one in error it deleted both. Ouch!

I went to change the Font (which the droplist requires sorting) and when I saved I was told the database location had changed and the app would restart (which it didn't).

Also, the flashing of the help at the screen bottom is quite annoying.

I do like the program and will probably buy but can these simple issues be fixed?
May 16 2011 at 11:09pm Copy Link
Gabi L @Dan
I'm aware of the bug you found and it's fixed in the upcoming version.

Regarding the database location restart: I wasn't aware of this one so thank you for pointing it out to me. It should be fixed in the next version.

About the flashing text: On Mac this doesn't happen so I'm guessing you're using Windows. Will see what's causing it and how to solve it.

Thanks for your comment!

Gabi L Just a heads-up regarding the false alarm by Kaspersky AV saying that QSnipps installer is infected or something like that:

I've uploaded the installer to the website and everything looks OK. You can see the results here:
LUDSOFT - May 17 2011 at 1:32am Copy Link
Marco De Luca On the Windows version: when editing the snippet, the code jumps around. I've found two behaviours:

- it jumps/scrolls to the edited line

- it jumps to the first line and scrolls then back to the edited line

This is a bit confusing. I don't want to do a lot of editing inside the tool, but sometimes a little bit of formatting or adding comments is necessary. Am I the only one to see this...?
May 17 2011 at 2:21am Copy Link
Gabi L @Marco:
Could you please send me an email at regarding this behaviour ?

Thank you!

Staley I am thinking about getting this... but am wondering about the before mentioned bugs. When can the next release, that includes this bug fixes be expected? Thanks!

Gabi L A few days...
I'm already working on fixing them :-)

Roger McKeon Hi,

I ordered a Windows license this morning through you and Plimus and have received absolutely nothing yet. Is this normal?

I would very much like to get an answer concerning this situation.

Hi there,

I've sent you two emails with the registration details, one of them from my Yahoo email address. Please check your SPAM folder or whitelist

If you're using Twitter, you could also add the qsnipps account as a friend and request via personal message your registration details.

Well, I finally did get it. Thank you so much for taking the trouble.

Stephane M Hi Gabi,

I just saw on the Buy page on your website that the Cross-Platform License does not include Linux, is that correct?

May 17 2011 at 1:55pm Copy Link
Peter Margol @ Stephane: You are right, I haven't noticed and I guess now I'm sponsoring Steve Jobbs (although hate his products) - so I paid the full price anyway and yet have no Linux licesnse... Funny approach; probably Jobbs-ers don't count Linux as a Platform ;)

Gabi L @Roger
Glad we've finally managed to get you the registration data.

@Stephane & Peter
Yes, you are right. The Linux version went live after the BDJ promotion was accepted.

Royce Englehart So, the only way to get the Linux version is thru QSnipps website?
Dec 23 2011 at 8:51am Copy Link
Gabi L @Royce: Nope. If you order a Windows OS license today, while this promotion is still available via BitsDuJour, you will automatically get and a free full Linux OS license.
LUDSOFT - Dec 23 2011 at 9:12am Copy Link
Botchka I'm confused.

The Mac version is $12.95 and the Windows version is $12.95 on their website. Is the BDJ version for *both* Windows & Mac?
