Bertie Brummel Looks like the vendor has not learned from past comments. No trial version is offered. If one follows the "Try For Free" link on the website you're prompted to enter your personal details to get an e-mail with demonstration videos ....

I'm not going to spend $ 60 to buy the cat in a bag.

Sue James And once again, at $70.18 AUD this is NOT a 53% discount for Australians, but approximately 40% off $117.74 AUD (the full price shown during the checkout process). IMO this software discount is being falsely represented on BDJ once more - as it was in previous years. The promotion should itemise the different percentages that apply to different regions of the globe. Otherwise, intended or not, the vendor gives those of us not based in the US the impression that we are being ripped off.

eb235 Please note that

- "Prices do not necessarily include taxes, which will vary by country." (from the fine print) which is perfectly OK.

- more puzzling, the discount rate also does vary by country : almost 53.5% in US$ (from $129 down to $59.99) but only 40.4 % in the Euro zone (final price : €59.01 minus 21% VAT charge gives €48.77 as compared to the €81.82 list price excl. tax)

By the way in the euro zone, the highest (Belgian) rate is charged (21%).

Oh well, it's still a discount !

Bob Levy This is not a "deal". Would I but it just to see if it works in MY environment. No.
I do not like "money back guarantees". I would pay if I knew it worked on a few of my pdf's but I have been to disappointed with the products that I have tried.

Joe M The fine print says "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 1 month."
Wow! How generous is that. 1 whole month of free upgrades. That has got to be the shortest I have ever seen.

Cary Adams No trial offer? Really?

Too often purported Word converters yield a document comprised of hundreds of text snippets enclosed in individual tables, haphazard formatting etc. Not being able to fully test this programs conversion abilities and pdf editing powers leaves me questioning why one would shell out so much money on an unknown.

Also.. it's not clear how Readiris collates scanned two-sided multi-page documents. Must I do that manually?

IRIS Inc. When using a duplex scanner - a scanner that can scan both the
front and the back side of documents - the Duplex scanning option
is available in the software. Select this option to have Readiris scan the front and back side of documents.

Pavi Johnson I also find the lack of a demo annoying. However, I have a strong need for such a software, so I will try it and report back if I need to use the 30 day policy.

My understanding from previous comments from the vendor is that updates within a version are free, but an upgrade to the next version are free only within the 1 month period.

Best, /Pavi

Brenda Adams I found a 10 day free trial via their website. I'm gonna quick take a look at it.

In order to get trial, u send email address and they sent u link to the download .exe.

DON'T look for 'demo' - that means 'video.' What you want is TRIAL.

Software Guy ReadIRIS is a Canon company. Please check out the link page below carefully which compares the features of pro to corporate.
http://www.irislink.com/c...rsion.aspx

The 50 page limitation is a deal breaker for me. For example, you can not scan an entire book as a single document. Well, then scan chapters as documents and do a batch conversion - no, it can't do that except for Corporate version. And quite a few people scan books and then convert the doc files to voice so that they can listen to the book while driving or doing some other task. This is tremendously useful for students, and also very useful for the vision impaired. And ReadIRIS pro can't do these tasks?? With a 50 page limit it should be called ReadIRIS Home, not PRO.

These are arbitrarily imposed limitations of the software by the developer and they severely limit the usefulness of ReadIRIS except for small tasks. That more or less takes them out of contention as a serious OCR alternative.
I have ReadIRIS 12 corporate (yes I use ABBYY also) and will say that as an OCR it works extremely well.(They skipped V13). And it pains me to make these comments about such a good OCR engine, but the page/batch limitations of Pro are not good even for routine home applications. And the Corporate version is priced too high for serious home and even small business users.

IRIS Inc. Several important feed-backs:
-50 pages is indeed a limitation of the Pro version although free PDF mergers are all over the internet... The reality is that the majority of document conversions are for batches smaller than 10 pages. When you need to quickly scan a document to a highly compressed PDF, Readiris is incredibly useful!
This is why IRIS is now a Canon company (acquired in 2013) and Readiris is bundled with most HP scanners on a worldwide basis since 1998. Readiris is the most widely bundled OCR software in the world and V14 is the latest version.

-No editing within the software indeed. Simply use an external text editor which is vastly more powerful than any in-software editor.

Cary Adams @Jean-Marc Fontaine ... Thansk for your response. Is what you are saying is that ONLY with a duplex scanner can your product collate two-sided documents. Correct? Is that only in this version, or the corporate as well, as Paperport will manage two-sided copies with a SIMPLEX scanner. It also lacks this 50-page limit that Software Guy has pointed out.

Will Readiris recognize multiple documents on the scanning bed and offer to outout individual scans. For example, if I place 6 receipts in the scanner bed, will it give me the option to automatically generate 6 individual scans.

IRIS Inc. If you put 6 receipts on the scanner glass then you will get one image that will result in a one page PDF file.

If on the other hand you scan 6 double sided pages either in Simplex or Duplex you end up with 6 images which will output to a single PDF file with 6 pages. All the duplex is doing is cutting the scanning time by scanning both sides of the page. It also saves you the trouble of matching up pages 1, 3, & 5 with 2, 4 & 6 (interleafing).

Brenda Adams I don't get it. Unlike it's competitors, you cannot SAVE the scans prior to saving to text, etc?
I lost 4 pages of scans when your program locked up. It didn't recover. I lost page pages of work. Once I reopened the program, it did not ask if I wanted to recover. I'm sorry, but in so many ways, the product does not compare to the other OCR programs I use (for about the same money).
Also, fractions it does poorly. No side by side to fix errors when they are there? That's ridiculous. I wanted to like. But I'm going back to Omnipage (sells often at $99). PS: MOST ocr programs allow you to EDIT text PRIOR to saving!! Your's doesn't. There are so many great things about your program, but come on. This isn't a fully put together OCR program yet.
I WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO SEND U SAME TEXT SCANNED IN YOUR VS OTHER OCR PROGRAMS I OWN, SO YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF OUTPUT DIFFERENCES *ALONE* THAT MAKE THE OTHERS BETTER--NOT EVEN TO MENTION FEATURES.

Jorma Nahkola I bought a license for v12 years ago here via BitsDuJour, but was not satisfied with the quality of the documents Readiris created. The missing trial version doesn't sound good either.

I reached better results with some PDF programs with OCR capability - like for example with Nitro Professional PDF. BTW. Why v13 was never released? Straight to v14 from v12? Will pass this one.... thanks anyway.

Pavi Johnson I downloaded (<220 MB), installed and registered. Then I attempted to add my scanner, which was not listed. I tried both "Epson TWAIN" entries, and connection was not possible. After several attempts, the Epson model I have popped up, and after I clicked it... connection was not possible. Then I installed VueScan for comparison. It was <10 MB, and after installation it had my scanner listed without any selection required. Scanning to OCR PDF worked out of the box in duplex mode after I ticked "OCR PDF", and it costs only $20 more than the ReadIRIS discounted price, with what appears to be lifetime upgrades. I wish the vendor had responded with the link for the trial version. Now I will have to ask for a refund, and will report back how that goes. Best, /Pavi

CFGuy Regarding comments from Readiris Rep on the "50 page scan limitation" that Software Guy pointed out - " Mr. Fontaine (from Readiris) advised "... although free PDF mergers are all over the internet... ".
I'm sorry, but with all due respect, that comment was just lame- and extremely [software] "user-unfriendly". Why should we, as consumers, be expected to have to go online, research, download (and perhaps even pay for), install and then evaluate entirely separate software programs to compensate for user-unfriendly, and IMHO ridiculously imposed, software limitations of a program that we might purchase? Software Guy is right. Remove the "50 page maximum scan" limitation from your "Pro" version software, Readiris. As a software consumer, I am surprised (and disappointing) that a company (apparently now owned by :Canon:) would impose such a "non user friendly"restriction on consumers who buy a "Professional" version of their software product. _CFGuy
