Frank Sielna Dear Elena,

I slept over this idea and getting more and more tempted to spend the bucks.
Allone I fear paying 80 bucks and then being with nothing.
How do "ReclaiMe Ultimate is licensed per user," and "Online license activation is required with a hardware footprint," correlate? If I (as user) have 10 or 100 PCs, what's then?*

And what happens once you're "dead" (no online license server available)?

Regards, Frank

* You're aware that your product is sth for the drawer, to have at hand in need. w/o install just to start and rescue data!

Elena Pakhomova If you, as user, happen to have 10 PCs, you activate it on 10 PCs.
If you happen to have 100 PCs, you still activate it on 100 PCs. Just try avoid doing it all 100 on the same day.

Once we're dead, you can email for the activation.
Once we're dead completely, i.e. suddenly and fully out of business, you can't activate on any more PCs. Whatever already activated, still works. I suppose you will have some good return on your investment by that time, if ever.

Sythe Green Activation per computer is not very useful if wanting to have this recovery tool on a bootable usb stick as part of repair/recovery toolkit.

Is it possible to activate the software for use on a bootable USB stick that would be used on any computer if the need arises to do file recovery?

Frank Sielna Dear Elena,

many thanks for your answer!
But you did not understand the "drawer" idea. I usually have absolutely no need for your software. In the last 5 years it was just ONCE I needed to recover data. Free software worked fine.

With the many (file)systems you promise to support you are a tempting idea. But I will need you in 3 or 5 years.
And at THAT time I don't want to INSTALL your soft to an already broken computer/device and ACTIVATE it.

Can you understand that?

Yours, Frank

Louis Nemecek does this recover drives with MBR faults?
Dec 2 2012 at 8:24am Copy Link

Elena Pakhomova I'd say in most cases yes, but there can be no guarantee for a specific case. Sometimes MBR damage prevents you from seeing larger damage in data area. If that can be handled or not, is specific to the particular case.

Danny I liked a comparison list or tables on Data recovery softwares seen where ReclaiMe Ultimate. Can I find somewhere?
Dec 3 2012 at 12:53am Copy Link
0
Elena Pakhomova Lifetime free uprgades, yes;

As far as comparisons go, you'd rarely find them. The setup of the testbed to match real-life cases requires significant specific knowledge, which is not readily available outside software vendors themselves. So it ends up like if we do the comparison, you are not likely to trust it, and if some magazine does the comparison, they usually end up testing the most basic cases, or testing something rarely used in real life, or just botching it.

Despite the still a hefty discount, it is still priced for my budget. Can you assure me this ReclaiMe Ultimate purchase, if I that I have no other data recovery software need anymore?

Kimmo Lahtinen @Danny Thys, I have found out that you are very likely to need an other software. I have noticed that one software is sometimes better than another. This software seems to be simple to use, but I wonder if it can rescue files from really messed up disk.
Dec 3 2012 at 2:40am Copy Link
0
Elena Pakhomova That's depends on how you plan to use it. Data recovery services, doing several jobs a day, have to keep all sorts of software for different situations. For home use, that would be maybe once per year, you are not likely to need more than one software.

how is possible that ReclaiME exe file size is smaller than ontrack and is as powerful as ontrack?
Dec 3 2012 at 11:26am Copy Link

Elena Pakhomova ReclaiMe uses one single mode for what Ontrack lists as Deleted File Recovery and Formatted Media Recovery. ReclaiMe does not have an equivalent to Ontrack's Disk Diagnostics, and I'm not sure what their Disk Tools do.

As file sizes go, I'm not sure what Ontrack uses in their programming, it is sort of their software.

Elena Pakhomova On CNet, these was an incident where we believe there was a problem somewhere between them and payment gateway, so that gateway just refused to process the payment. So that was more the case of excessive security on the part of gateway.

And it runs OK on Windows 8 already, we probably just forgot to update the spec sheet somewhere.

Pim Joosten I am confused by the following fine print: "You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards."

Is this really the case? It would preclude the transfer of a license to another owned computer (which is stated to be possible). Also installation on a computer that is purchased after the promotion has ended would not be possible. Moreover, one of my computers is currently broken. I will be fixing it in a month or two. Does this rule prevent me from installing the program on that computer once I have repaired it?

Lito I know it's a bit pricey, but this program is well worth the money. I bought it last time around and it's very useful. I have used several of these recovery programs, and this one is definitely the best when dealing with non Windows disks. I have used it to recover files in a useable format from a broken linux ext2 HD and a Mac HFS that a few other programs gave me in fragments that were broken. It supports loading a raw disk image also which is great if you backed up the HD using a drive imaging program like dd in linux.

One feature I'd like to see added, is a way to save the current scanned state so you can come back later without having to rescan the drive/image file from scratch. The one thing about all programs like this, is the larger the drive the longer it takes to scan, so if you spent an hour scanning a drive, then get interrupted for some reason, you either have to keep the program running in the background (sometimes not possible), or you have to restart from the beginning which is a lot of time wasted. Other than that, I do highly recommend the program.

Lito @Danny I bought this and used it to recover a some files from a bad HD, I can tell you it is one of the better ones. I use this and another 2 and of the 3 in my toolbox this one recovered the most working files. To be fair though only 2 out of the 3 other utilities, could recover data because the filesystem involved was Linux EXT3. ZAR (Zero Assumption Recovery) seemed to recover more files, but everything was fragmented and very few files were playable or complete, since the drive was a MythTV hard drive with recorded TV shows on it, it was easy to see if what was recovered was correct. Running the same drive through Reclaim me got me less files but all files were playable and complete. Both programs used the same hard drive image I created before that HD died completely so the conditions were the same.

Though I do agree with the others that I would really like it to be usable on a USB stick. Like for use on a WinPE type bootable environment. It would save a lot of time in some cases so we wouldn't have to disassemble a PC to attempt to recover some files from it that might have been accidentally erased. Personally speaking, it would be real useful to have a Linux version so as to avoid WinPE at all :).

"You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards."

Does that mean, I cannot install / use the software on a new PC I plan to purchase later this year? Or do you mean, only the 1st installation / registration has to be done today?

Thanks!

Lito @Bertie Brummel : Yes this recovers files from Linux EXT3 fine and can see any HDs connected that windows can see (even if windows doesn't recognize the drive format).

Just wanted to mention that if you just want to copy over data from a good working Linux EXT 2/3 HD there are free utilities to copy files from linux formatted HDs like explor2fs (sourceforge) and Linux Reader (disk internals). Search with google to download them. Those will work faster but don't recover lost or deleted data. This one is most useful for recovering from HDs where the drive is going bad or has lost it's partition data info, or quick formatted etc... It can take quite some time for it to go through a HD to find files, but this one will recover all that it can find even ones that have been deleted but haven't been overwritten yet.

I must admit I can't quite believe the DiSCOUNTED Price being asked (80 bucks USD) seems to be one heck of a high price. (I found Recuva by Piriform_com to be very good and when purchased as part of CCleaner Pro that costs approx 40 bucks)

So as not to miss out on a ''bargain'' deal: I'm going to go away and do some intensive research over the next 10 to 12 hours to see if ''ReclaiMe Ultimate'' really is THE BEST recovery software on the market ... or not. Certainly '... recover data from a hardware NAS ...' is a feature that not every program is capable of doing, so that is 1 feature already put in the buy-it column.

Time to start some research ...
