Dan Brooks I have more than 25 years of digital imagery manipulation experience professionally and more than 40 years personally. I have used commercial editors and coded my own. I think that a comparison of the algorithms used in Reshade's products with the default algorithms in Photoshop is somewhat disingenuous. No editor "preserves" any original feature when enlarging a digital image. The editor "interprets" the existing information and literally makes up the information for every new pixel that did not exist in the original image. Photoshop can produce results like Reshade, provided that the user adjusts it's settings to approximate the Reshade algorithm.

I am not actually convinced that Reshade's methods produce a "better" image at all. It looks to me like Reshade enhances/increases the local contrast when the original image has high contrast for that area, and smooths/reduces the local contrast when the original image has low contrast for the area. While that may be okay for some purposes, the result does not always appear to be consistent with what one expects from the original image. Case in point, look at the enlargement example of the white reflection on the blue ball. Yes, Photoshop's bicubic algorithm has produced a blurry result, but Reshade has actually moved the edge of the white reflection closer to the dark edge of the ball. "Who cares? It's a reflection!," you say. Imagine the resulting distortion occurring in the enlarged images of the film shot by Mr. Zapruder showing JFK at the moment of his death.

I'm not saying don't buy Reshade. I am saying that all editors are inventing the contents of every pixel which did not exist in the original image, and users should be aware of and consent to the changes made by any editing process in any editing software. Small details matter, and, sometimes, the blur is more appropriate than the "sharper" line. Then again, sometimes the sharper line is best. If you have to change your image, then be sure to check your image afterwards, every single time.
