re: forums. I guess this is something I debate about with myself. Overall it is a good idea. One of the cons is that often forums tend to get plagued by spam...

1. I assume you are referring to exporting. So far export is not in a folder structure, although it is something I would like to add soon.
2. I think for this question, the simplest is to take a look at what the program provides via the trial version. If you have any specific requests feel free to contact us.
3. I'm not sure what you are referring to: (a) Importing emails into the program: At this point you need to use the clipper. (b) Email notes to others: So far not, but is on the to do list.

@ Hi Bob, You will come across the license when you install the program; also found in the help file, and also found at the link under "Policy" tab (on this page). It is licensed per user, so no problem to install on multiple computers if you are the only one using the program.

Brenda Adams I am a Standard version user. I would love to try the Pro version, to see if those extras are things I might want. (And at what price?) Can I load this 30-day Pro version over my Standard and go back safely to the Standard if I do not buy the Pro (when trial period ends)?

PS: I have maybe 7 similar programs and none seem to be as good as yours. I love how I can capture sections of webpages so easily WITHOUT tying up my clipboard (unlike others I've tested)...and how it instantly also grabs the URL (unlike some others I've tested).
I urge folks to try your RightNote. I so love it.
PPS: I have a friend who has used RightNote to create her own personal recipe software...I mean, all her recipes are BEAUTIFULLY arranged within a RightNote notebook. Her method is very sophisticated. This says to me that RightNote uses can be quite varied.

Brenda Adams I installed the download over my existing Standard v2.03 and it brought me up to date on the Standard, but it doesn't appear to be a trial of the PRO version--which is the version I want to test. Also I think spam in forums is almost no problem if you have to register first to get access to a forum. Or you could limit it even more if only registerd customers would get access to it.

Neil I've installed the portable version to try the pro features. Currently, as far as these types of software I use Ecco Pro and Evernote.

Question: Is there an Android version with sync available? I don't like entering notes on my Kindle Fire but I love the ability to at least automatically sync and view my notes from my desktop on the Kindle. That's a deal maker for me, if you have it.

A couple of usage notes: The first thing I tried though is to create an outline using bullets in a note. Outlines are very useful and important. However, unlike most outliners, which indent when you press Tab, yours doesn't seem to. You have to use the toolbar (or maybe some key combo shortcut. I'd prefer the standard way.

Another: I tried to add a jpeg as a virtual node, and it gave me an error: binary files are not supported. It worked fine with a python (.py) file I tried, and that looked to be a nice feature to "catalog" some code. But why not binary files like jpegs?

Rael Bauer Hi Neil, There is no Android version. RightNote only works on the Windows platform.

Re: bullets: Not sure what you mean. In Word for example, if I press Tab after a bullet it will create a tab, not indent the bullet.

Virtual nodes/notes are intended for editing external text files in-place from RightNote. The following file types are supported for virtual notes: txt, rtf, rvf or plain text such as source code. You could import an image file as an attachment or link.

Harald Vogel I like RN more and more finding out some great features. When setting up my favorite notebooks I tried what you wrote in the helpfile:

1. You can double click on a file in the "recent files" list to add it to the favorites list.

I tried this with the "File-Open" List and in the Resource-Panel but it was not working. Can you tell me which Recent files you meant and how I get it to work.

Also it would be great if it would be possible to set up also favorite notes to quickly jump to notes somewhere in a subtree or even open a note as a page.

Actually the instructions you are referring to are a bit out-dated, since the favorites dialog was changed slightly a while ago. When you click on "Add" or "Edit" (in the favorites dialog), at the bottom left is a button which will bring up the list of recently used files. You can double click on one of these items to select it.

Louis H I was actually going to pass over this one (thinking to myself - do I really need another app like this) and then decided to give it a try. Very nice application. What really impressed me, though, was that the vendor made all versions, including upgrades, available at the BDJ discount!!! Those of you who have been around BDJ for some time know how often the deals are limited to new purchases of the product offered. Software Guy Spent some time with rightnote and it is a full featured note management program that distinguishes itself from the crowded field of competition in several ways. With spreadsheet capabilities, it would be a favorite of those that need this capability built in. Next, the dual pane was a very nice feature for writers and I could see how it would be useful specifically for programmers. Of course tthe split pane feature has lots of other uses too. And very convenient is the built in screen clipper for research or surfing clippings from the internet.

For modest needs remember the cute and free minipad2! (32 bit only!) or use the ree version of Rightnotes
So how does RightNotes fit in? - the free is a great deal. the standard fits in well with most other notes managers but distinguishes itself with spreadsheet capabilities and the built in clipper as well as note to note linking (some othercompeting software titles have this feature) at a competitive price. the pro adds split panes and can save web pages but at a premium price.
Selection of a note management program is a matter of special features and personal preference. the field is crowded so you can be picky. basic notes fill the bill for most users, but you may find the need for the special features offered by the various programs - and there are many. marek jedlinski Nico: do you know why RegNow adds a "sales tax" for sales to EU residents?

When I tried to order, RegNow added VAT to the base pricde (which is OK, I'm in the EU), but then adds a $6.89 USD on top of that as a "sales tax". It does that both for the cc and PayPal option. Isn't the sales tax applicable only to residents of certain states in the US?

This is not normal, unless some tax laws changes within the last week or so. Could anyone at BdJ explain or intervene with RegNow, please?

Glen Coulthard Just wondering which Rich View component you are using in your software. Most notes apps export well to RTF format, but not so much to Word's docx. Even moderate use of indentation, bullets, numbering, graphics, floating images, paragraph styles, and tables are sometimes troublesome when converted. However, some components are definitely better than others. I do a lot of draft writing in apps like this and then must convert to Word for final polishing, so this is an important requirement for my use.

I know that it's a technical question, but one that I run up against with almost all applications in this category.

Nico Westerdale marek, I don't know the specifics for this account, as it's the software vendor's account with RegNow that determines the VAT, and not our relationship with either RegNow or the vendor. It could very well be that this vendor has incorporated within the EU, which would determine tax for an EU purchase. Unfortunately I don't have full details. It's not something we have control over.

@Jim: You are told before the purchase. I apologize if I did not make it clear. The Sales Tax is added and listed on the final page before you confirm. It's just that, the tax should not be there in the first place (or more precisely, I've never seen a tax like that added purchases within the EU. We don't have a sales tax like that, we do have VAT.)

I am in the US but I have never been charged sales tax for software except when I purchased a physical copy in a retail store. Sales tax in the US must be levied only on a state by state basis.

@ marek, Jim: It is normal for a tax/vat of about $5.5-$6 to be added to orders from GB/EU. If you see something more than this then it should be queried. For US no tax should be added.

@ Glen: The term "Rich view" can be a little confusing to people, because it is very much an editor. The component comes from www.trichview.com, and is as you say used by a number of note taking applications. Although RTF is a standard, I would encourage other developers to allow import/export of rich view files (.rvf) since this would allow transfer between applications without any data loss. re: exporting to word, this is supported by the component, and something I would like to add to the program soon.

Jean Sibe Just purchased copy of Pro version. Did not like the "Sales Tax" though - it was +23% price increase. Guess we all EU residents need to support Greece?

Hoping to see this program develop even more and focusing on main Windows application rather than making 5 different versions, (iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone), eventually all missing something and development is stalling for main product.

@ M B, I played around and I don't think this is possible, there is no "Save File" feature, you can just open. And if file is unsupported, you can't even open it - you're stuck. I tried with "DLL" file. No errors either.

Mitchell Kastner Like Glen Coulthard, I use outliners writing tools and export notes to MS Word. With other outliners I copied and pasted web text to RTF notes but some of those notes could not be exported at all much less to MS Word; a colossal waste of time, which put in me in hot water with prospective clients. I need time to test this product out, with the assurance that after 30 days, if it does not suit my needs I can get a refund (perhaps less than a restocking fee as Scrivener charges).Does this program come with a money-back guarantee and if so what are the details of the program?

Rael Bauer @ Hi M B, Yes this should work. When you import the file (or drag 'n drop) select to import as Attachment (in the import options dialog). Set up a password in the file properties dialog (under File menu), and then set to protect the note (Tree-Edit Note-Protect=Yes).

The way to retrieve the original file is to use the Export dialog, and make sure you check the option "Include Protected".

Rael Bauer @ Hi Alan, depends if you want to upgrade to the std or pro version of RightNote. (You were previously using v1 which is closer to v2 std)

When ordering, select "Upgrade from version 1 to version 2 Std" for the std, and "Upgrade from version 1 to version 2 Pro" to upgrade to the pro.

I paid $29.97 for RightNote Pro 2.3.1. And I'm glad I did. But I will continue to use another Personal Information Manager that I only learned about from Bits Du Jour because MyInfo also supports tables but it allows me to put comments at the top of the web pages it downloads. I will also continue to use MetaProducts Inquiry because it does a perfect job of downloading every individual web page. Unfortunately, Inquiry does not yet support tables in notes nor does it allow comments to appear at the top of saved web pages. I see that RightNote Pro is updated frequently and I especially like the downloadable web page improvements made recently. I see that suggestions are welcome. Good. I will submit mine. I'm very glad to know about and buy a copy of RightNote Pro and hope I will soon be using it every day.

James Kenney If I were to run the portable version from inside of Dropbox, is there any protection against my forgetting to close a copy on one computer before opening it on another?
If not, it would seem to be a very simple change to add it.
It does not need to handle the error condition in any way, just tell the user that another copy is using the database, and forbid access until the problem is fixed.
You could also give the user the option to continue at his own risk, to handle the condition where the program was not exited properly.
This could be implemented by the simple method of a .lock file.
For all I know, this is already done, I have not looked for any temp files in the program folder yet!

Can you guess that I have already bought the program and am using the portable version as I post this!
So for, I am impressed!!!

Nice to see the extension. I bought yesterday, Pro.

This is a great Bits, one I was waiting for while my notes got a bit stale (the full price of the pro is a bit of scratch, with the BIts it is fine). At Donationcoder we have looked at a number of notesprogram, almost semi-obsessively, looking for the right features and balance and plesant use.

Rightnotes is overall perhaps the single crispest pure notes+++ program (with special features like spreadsheets and tables, and with fine tab usage and a lot more). I look forward to playing with more features like the web clipping, which varies a lot in note program utility.

In the long run, there is nothing wrong in using more than one program, as long as you try to use them for alternating functions (my special research here, my PIM there). However, if one program looks like it can handle most everything with enough clearness, Rightnote is in the lead.

To be fair, others are very good. For regular light use, nothing wrong with the free versions of Rightnote, Treedbnotes or Keynote-NF (free only). On the paid level, Mybase and TreeProjects and some mentioned by SoftwareGuy and others get special note. MyInfo was also mentioned above as having a couple of good features. Whatever you use, you prefer it to be in reasonably active development, which varies a lot.

However, overall, as a pure note-based program, I think it is fair to say that Rightnote is, today #1 , with excellent ongoing development and communication from Rael.

A little forum (even Yahoogroups or Googlegroups, very easy to moderate without the daily concerns of a web forum) is recommended. Where we can chat directly about features and use and development. Alternatively you could use Donationcoder as a talking spot, the way Linkman-Outertech and Chameleon and a few others do. We would like to see you more visible in a friendly environment.

Glen, you brought out an interesting point about RTF export to .docx. I usually export to forums or Eudora, so I do not have that problem, but I would be interested in your reporting back (or writing up on Donationcoder ?) your experiences trying to find a good tool for that purpose.

@ Hi James, first, when working with Dropbox, I would recommend that you only keep actual note files in Dropbox, not the main application, and not backups (see Options-Backups to set the backup directory).

If a file is changed on one computer, then you should receive a notification on the other computer that the file has changed and "it is recommended that you reload the file now..", so that you are working with the latest copy on that computer.

@ Hi Merle, we have just recently added the webpage capture feature, so at the moment this is the only way to do it. We do hope to add more options over time like you say.

@ Hi Bob, Yes, this is a feature of the pro version. You can see search results of a database/notebook that is not currently open, and then view a specific note from a database that is not open. The help file "Multi-notebook search" topic has more info and pictures.

DroidLuvr It sounds like there are a lot of people here who have a lot of experience with various versions of this program. I've never heard of it, but it sure sounds a lot like Microsoft OneNote (or Evernote without the cloud storage/sync part...)

Can anyone tell me about why this program would be different and/or better than those programs?? It seems to me this would not help me out if I already have OneNote and Evernote?

Rael Bauer Hi Droid, Good question, I will give you my thoughts/opinions.

RightNote is more similar to OneNote, and distinctly different to EverNote.

In EverNote your notes are kind of flying around in a big sea, and locating a note is search based: either by search term or/and tags. It's hard to group your notes together in a consistent, well planned and organised manner. I feel EverNote can be well suited to "grabbing info", but then the next step is to sift "the wheat from the chaff". Move important info to a more permanent storage system, with greater organising and structuring power. For little bits and pieces of info this may not be so necessary, but when you are doing more intensive research, web clipping, notes, information processing etc.. you want and need your info to be well structured, and you gain insight and understanding by having your info structured in this way.

With regard to OneNote: Here the programs are much more comparible: I have not used it that much but I can still offer some pointers as to how RightNote is different, and why you would want to include it in your information handling arsenal.

- I feel the tree control gives more organisation power compared to OneNote's "outline view" (don't know what they call it). OneNote's outline view seems well adapted for a small number of topics with not that much indenting. It seem's hard to manage larger numbers of topics and greater levels of organisation.
- One of OneNote's key features is typing in text anywhere in a document. Well, this has it's uses. On the other hand, I usally prefer compiling information in a standard type of editor. Having the ability to move info around all the time can be annoying..;)

Some features unique to RightNote:
- Not sure if this are available in OneNote: ability to protect specific notes.
- Dedicated spreadsheet note for storing account information, any type of lists, with powerful functions (e.g. Fill and standard Excel functions) and ability to import/export to Excel.
- Source code note type (would be important for programmers
- Dedicated webpage note type: stores a webpage exactly as original layout, not just extracting the text and images.
- Specific tools to re-organise notes within a notebook or between notebooks.
- Small self contained and Portable version
- Ability to contact author and make requests and see them implemented.
- There is also a focus to import data from the file system, and also work with external files as part of your work-flow and thereby be able to handle it more easily, something I don't think you can do as easily with OneNote.
- And more to come...

Neil Shapiro I did the trial. As tempting as it is, here's why I won't be buying, in the interest of giving feedback: Note that if I didn't find the app somewhat interesting, I wouldn't be taking the time to write this...it's in the hopes of improving it so that it might be useful to me in the future.

I have no vested interest other than as a user of these apps. Currently, I use Ecco, which is very old but still works and hard to beat. And Evernote for web page clipping. And "The Journal 5" for journaling/notes

The most natural way for me to write notes are in outline form. Ecco is the best at this. You can fake it in other notetakers using a bullet or numbered lists in a note, but in this app the behavior of bullets is awkward to enter. I mentioned this before, and Rael didn't quite understand my point, so I wanted to elaborate. Try it in Word, Open office or Google Docs. Start with a bullet, type the text, press enter, you get another bullet. Then instead of typing text, hit Tab. The bullet indents automatically to the next level. This isn't what RightNote does. Note that Evernote does this in this manner as well, conveniently.

Also, there's no concept of date in the notes. The Daily Journal is ideally organized in this regard. The tree is actually a calendar, and there's a traditional month at a time, and you can see your notes in these context/organizations. Great for organizing by date. Full text search really takes care of the rest for me. There are obviously times when I want to organize by other structure, but I also ALWAYS want access to notes by date. One workaround for this would be to have a quick keyboard shortcut that inserts the current date. Then you could quickly do that at the top of a note. But you really need to keep create/modify dates for the notes too IMHO.

I do like the relatively clean interface, and the inclusion of the programmers syntax highlighting. Perhaps that's why I keep considering it...maybe I'd use it for code snippets. But the rest per above is just a show stopper for me. I'll check it out in future versions.

Some bugs I noted in testing:
- Screen capture does not work right in a dual monitor situation. It's stuck on one monitor.
- After capturing a web page, the middle pane (I had the search pane open) was not resizing properly, leaving a gap between panes and not making use of the space, as I maximized or resized the window.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on the app to see how it progresses.

I also agree being able to view notes by date is useful and important. Currently there is the ability to view history in the Resource Panel. This is limited, but there are plans for added functionality. FYI, note creation and modified dates are stored in the application. You can view the creation date in the header panel.(Right click header panel for options).

RegNow insists that I purchase the Extended Download service and does not give me the option of removing it.

I will not buy as long as that is the case. I sincerely hope the developer will honor the discount at a later time if RegNow continues to try to take $6 from me.

I just ordered the Pro upgrade for myself. The developer is very helpful. I love the new entire webpage grab feature. (I've always loved the grab features RightNote offers, and now to the the entire webpage grab, for my uses, will be a real boon.

As far as ordering, here is what I saw. Itemized out is the item itself plus, next line down, the Extended Download (with a Trash Can icon sitting next to it). You have to clear the ED by clicking on the trash can. When you do that, it immediately clears the item and a new amount is summed up. You then fill in your payment data (like credit card info) and then are taken to the next page where AGAIN the itemization is shown and you are to Accept or Reject the itemization.

You must have been eagerly hitting enter a bit too fast to read the screen as you ordered. Maybe this will be a very cheap lesson for your future. But I do hope the Reg folks help you to undo this...this one time. I know it's not the developer who did this to you--he seems like a really good guy from my past dealings with him. You do really need to carefully see/read/scrutinize what you are signing up for. The program is a good one.

DPinAZ I had downloaded the trial version 2.3.1 of RightNote, and based on using it decided to buy it when it became available on Bits du Jour. As with several others, the purchase process did not work correctly, and while it appears I was charged for the software, I did not get a link for downloading, nor did I get a license key.

Since then, the vendor sent me an email with a link to the software, but still no license key.

I downloaded the software from the provided link, but when installing and running it I find that it is an old version of the software (Ver 2.1.1) copyright 2010, and that it had overwritten the new version that was already installed on my computer. When running it, it says that it is an expired trial version, and that the file it is trying to open is from a newer version and may not work correctly.

Is the deal here on Bits du Jour for the old 2010 software even though there is a newer version available?

DPinAZ I have been unable to clip information from websites, and get a message that says something like "browser address is not found." Could this happen if the computer is behind a proxy server? If that is the problem, is there a way to fix it? I don't see any options for designating a proxy server.

Arlene Manduca How does one retrieve the notes. Can you do a text string search on all notes or must you know which folder it's in like on a PC.

To answer your question: Both. To start you organise your notes into a folder like / tree structure (with multiple pages as well), so you can easily locate your notes that way.

Then there is a search function which will show you notes that contain text you are looking for. You click on a result to go to that note. Take a look at the picture at the top of the page for an illustration.

Susan Horton I have -- completely coincidentally -- been putting RN through rigorous testing for the last 3 weeks (on their free trial), and recommend it highly and enthusiastically! I was, in fact, days away from buying the standard version when this offer hit my mail box this morning, and I almost fell over!

I used Keynote for many years & moved to MyNotesKeeper a decade ago when KN went the way of the dinosaurs. MNK is probably the best tree information organizer out there, but development and support is almost non-existent and while I have my entire in my MNK databases, it's obviously time to move on. Thus a 7 months' long search for the best replacement.

I have tried literally everything on the market. MNK is a hard act to follow but RightNote has managed the impossible & won me over. I'd like a little more freedom in customization -- the font on the tabs is too small for my old eyes (you can change the default font everywhere else, oddly) and I would like a good auto-correct feature, but those are minor complaints.

I know this sounds as though I work for the company or am being paid for this, but (alas!) I'm not. Just wildly enthusiastic about a piece of software that does just what I want and need it to do. The timing on this offer is magical! Thank you.

Mark Johnson I have been a registered user of RightNote pro for about a year now, and use it extensively. I also have licenses for Ultra Recall, TreeDBNotes, and a couple of other competitors, but since purchasing RightNote I have moved over all my data and no longer use the others.

I would also add that the developer of RightNote is very responsive to questions/problems and is actively developing the product.

I definitely recommend the product, especially at this sale price.

Alexander Deliyannis @ J.Moreno: I own both Surfulater and Rightnote. They are very different beasts. Surfulater is optimised for collecting web content in a usable form. Rightnote is a more general personal information manager. Since we are discussing Rightnote here, here's some examples of things it can do that Surfulater can't (as far as I am aware): spreadsheet type notes, encryption of notes, index attachments. I suggest you check out the feature list at the link above.

Chris Roy Jackson I have a question:

I have been using "FlashGet" as my Download Manager for about 13 years !!! I LOVE the way I can keep Notes regarding Purchases, Rights (Resale. usage, whether it is a USER license or a COMPUTER lICENSE, etc.) Details, etc. in a " *.log " file so that I don't lose those details in the future!
However, I then have to Move the files into my "Install" or Business" or "Documents" Folers (and sub folders").
Then when I need somewthing I have to search appropriately to find a file and READ to find out what the "rights" are.

Can the Notes be in a (searchable) "database Format" so that I could enter some of the variable details into searchable "Entry Fields"???

Is it possible to Link a Note to a file at the time of Download (or after moving it)? If so is there any facility for "Auto"-updating (or Manually started) of Links ???

If any Users of the software OR someone from BauerApps can reply it would be very helpful so that I can see whether this will be a replacement for my current Notes Application.
I am downloading it now to trial, and may answer some of these questions myself. If I DO buy it, I'd like to do it in the next 18 hours for this great dicount.

Any valuable input will be GREATLY Appreciated !!

Bruno Verschraegen Like J. Moreno I am glad to know about RightNote but for the extensive web research we do I too will stick with Surfulater. I (briefly) tested RightNote this morning and have been using Surfulater for almost 2 years (after a BDJ promo). For website capturing neither product manages to truly faithfully capture most sites' layout, in the sense that information shown in "columns" is usually reproduced one beneath the other. But overall I have the impression that Surfulater gives me more, also in terms of structure.

On the other hand, I am uneasy with the forthcoming changes in Surfulater's "next-gen" version, which is bound to “file” articles (equivalent of RightNote's notes) exclusively through the use of tags, completely abandoning a classical file structure. The day that this really happens, I might well give up on Surfulater and move over to RightNote. For me, tags can be a great addition to a file structure, but not a replacement…

Rael Bauer @ Chris: I am not familiar with FlashGet and how/where it creates log files.

As far as RightNote is concerned,it certainly can help you store such information (and I use it myself for this purpose).

You would usually want to use the clipper or webpage capture (see the New User Guide and Help file for more information). You can then easily find this information, even if in different notebooks (the Pro version searches through multiple notebooks).

It is also possible to link to an external text file (which will be included in searches), however the index is only updated if the file edit is initiated from RightNote, so this may not be what you are after.

I have over twenty years of information in Evernote. I loaded all my notes from Memory Mate (DOS 3.3) and Google Notebook plus five or more years direct entry into Evernote.

At this point, in RightNote you create specific Evernote notes that can be synced with Evernote (and changes made in Evernote can be synced back to RightNote).

1) Currently host4africa is our webhosting provider. When the program starts it checks a file on the server to find out the latest version. If you disable checking for updates (in the options), then this should not happen.

2) I believe you are quite right. This is something that needs to be handled for RichView notes. Currently the "Link to File" action (in the Tree menu-Add child) or Import (as link) will handle the paths in a portable fashion, so these should be preferred.

1) It is possible to keep more than one notebook open at a time using multiple instances of RightNote. However the preferred method is to only use one instance of RightNote, and use the favorites toolbar to quickly move between different notebooks.

2) It is more likely to depend on the number of notes per page and their contents, than on the actual database size. The program is designed more for spreading your information over a number of pages and notebooks, instead of all in one tree. When you load a notebook, only the current page/tree is loaded.

3) I do not think so.

Hi Rael, this was also one of my biggest concerns. I am no longer able to trial the standard or pro version and couldn't remember if selection of multiple notes were possible for quick transfer on the other editions. As a long term user of MNK this function is certainly possible. Your search options with word count either side is second to none, pity about the lack of global replace, it would be a real winner for this type of app..

Mark Johnson For those asking about selection of multiple notes:

It is quite easy to select a portion of a tree (any number of nodes), then copy or cut/paste it to any other place within the same tree or another tree.

I use the above all the time to move projects (including dozens of child notes) into a 'QA Test' or 'Production Release' folder, depending on the status of the work.

I'm not sure if the above is what you are talking about or not, but it's certainly a great feature that is not as easy in most other note managers.

Dierk Have been looking for a new Document/Note Keeper, and have been Impressed with the RightNote trial -- especially fact that a couple of the Glitches that we (and presumably others) reported during the trial have already been addressed!

Now if we could only be rid of the "Spell Check Did Not Load" error....

In any case, purchased the Pro version, and have already found that it provides a much easier method to Capture the web Purchase Screens than our previous option. (Trial version already running on the system.)

It will still take a while to determine how to best utilize RightNote, and would love to see additional functions in the future (Android version, with Sync to a Smartphone, anyone??), but it should do a fine job under Windows in the meantime.

Bob McLain I bought a license for RightNote after spending a couple of hours yesterday with the trial version. Over the past 20 years, I've used most every outliner and organizer on the market, from KeyNote through Knowsy Notes. I think, finally, I've found in RightNote one that does (almost!) everything I want it to do.

One feature I'd like to see in the next version: being able to store a separate "Scratch" note for each page in a notebook instead of one big "Scratch" note for the entire notebook.

1) The program allows you to export notes into standard formats. So for example the richview note can be exported to rtf, txt, doc and html. Spreadsheet note to xls and csv. Webpage to html. You select the desired format in the Export dialog.

2) Yes, mostly. As mentioned above, use the "Preserve tree structure" option when exporting. This will preserve the tree structure of the notes. Then other programs that allow you to import a file and folder structure will be able to do that.

2) Basically, anything that can export it's data to a common file format like txt, rtf or html can be imported into RightNote. I have not tried the ones you mentioned specifically.

Javier Gil Say I copy a picture from a website and then add it to one of my notes. What format does it save it in? because all I get is "paste as bitmap" or paste as html (the html code does include the source, which is nice).
I mean, say it's a jpg image. When saved, does it save in bmp? (which would increase the size of the database quite a lot if I added lots of pictures). png? gif? etc.' I use other outliners and I do get the option of "pasting as png, etc."
You can't add an alarm to a note, can you? that would be a nice feature.

I liked the way it handles creating tables. Really easy, nice feature. The "page" concept is quite nice too.
Overall, quite impressed.

Thanks for providing the community with a free product also. (Your program Compare Advance).

I did miss a support forum though. Customers can find answers to common problems that other users have had and we can share ideas and experiences and assess how well/fast you respond to issues.

Robert W I would also like a support forum. With RightNote I took this opportunity to upgrade from the Standard version to the Professional version. The searches can be very very fast, and show matching occurrences in Context. However there is a long standing bug dealing with the Search. You cannot restrict the Search to just the Tree Captions (NoteTree). The Note Content seem to be always searched.

I had been a long time user of Treepad, another PIM tool. After a long search and review of many other PIMs - I have been glad that I made the switch to RightNote. The support (Rael) and ongoing enhancements are superior. The information that I paste or otherwise import has much better formatting and complete content than I would get with my old PIM. Recommended.

1) If you paste as a web clip, it will save the image in the original format (e.g. if it is png, it will save it as png). If you choose to paste as bitmap, then it will paste as a bitmap. You should not worry about size too much, since by default all notes are compressed (with zip compression). A zip compressed bitmap is about the same size as a png image.

2) Currently there is no alarm feature. It is on the to do list...

VLM Rael Bauer - Just my small bit of input: I think it would indeed be useful to sync RightNote notebooks or selected tree sections with 2 notebooks. And I agree with the forum suggestion. Your product seems to offer many opportunities for user creativity, and a forum allows users to share some of that knowledge and experience, both with one another and with you. It's different than support tickets, in that support focuses on a solution for one person, whereas discussion in a forum focuses on solutions that many can use.

Dierk Have RightNote Pro, and it is a wonderful "personal knowledge management" application, with an excellent on-system UserGuide, and an Indexed Text Search with the option to include results from multiple RightNote databases.

HOWEVER: Have been concerned that the vendor website has been unavailable for the past couple weeks (or ? more) - and seems to remain so:
"The server at www.bauerapps.com is taking too long to respond."

Hopefully that is only a (semi-)Temporary Glitch - particularly as there seems to be another RN Promo in the works.

As others have suggested (as we did in an email directly to the vendor), a User Forum would be Most Welcome.

And, in a Personal Ideal World, an Android version of RN - even with less ambitious features - would probably instantly become the best Android app of its kind.

That is good news, all in all - but means something strange is going on somewhere between our end & bauerapps.

- Firefox still returns error msg reported earlier.

- OPERA says:
"Could not connect to remote server

You tried to access the address http://www.bauerapps.com/, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page."

Same errors come up on both laptop and desktop systems.

Running Norton AV (on both), so will try to dive into that & see whether it is blocking the site for some reason.

Will ASSUME that it is our ISP that is blocking access, based upon the following Experiment:

1) Tried to access bauerapps website from smartphone (Galaxy Note 2), using home Wifi connection - and thus running through our ISP: FAIL.

2) Then turned Wifi OFF on the GN2, and attempted to connect via 4GLTE: SUCCESS!!

Presumption from the above is that our ISP - AT&T (U-verse) is Blocking access to bauerapps.com for some reason - ?!?

Dierk Final post (!) on this subject: Hauled laptop up to church this evening, and IMMEDIATELY connected to Bauerapps.com.

So it definitely appears to be our ISP (again: AT&T U-verse) which is blocking access to the website - which is both Bad News (from MY perspective) and Good News (for Bauer Apps & everyone else)....

Guess I'd better check to see whether there are any recent Updates to RightNote, as long as the laptop can access the website!

Rich OBrien RightNote can instantly create Bookmarks like those in Evernote only far better. The Bookarks with Thumbnails in Evernote cannot be customized. With the RichViewEditor.exe from RightNote's developer Rael Bauer, without being software programmer I have easily created a Bookmark Template to capture in a few seconds bookmarks with a large 400 pixel (about 4.5 inches) thumbnail picture of each website. I also created a template which instantly captures a huge 9 inch picture of each website. Under Clipper Options on RightNote's Tools Menu, I can switch to a different Bookmark Templates in an instant. RightNote's bookmarks automatically include the website address, the website title and description. And and I can add notes, plus paste text and graphics from the web page into the bookmarks. RightNote provides a Table Menu which provides complete tools for further improving its bookmarks which are actually tables. RightNote with its customizable, instant bookmarks is by far the best software I've found for doing research on the Internet and collecting all the information I need to find my way back to the websites I've visited. Also, RightNote can download a copy of a web page and lets you edit it. Ever print a web page and find the type is too small to read? RightNote lets you download, edit and increase the type size or change the type font before you print. I love this software. You will too.

RightNote has become a personal favorite here as well. And am very glad to report that the Glitch that prevented opening their Homepage [ONLY from our household ISP (!); as related in earlier notes] no longer exists.

Posts such as the one above from Rich OBrien [THANK-YOU!] point out some of the broad capabilities that can be found within RightNote, WHILE ALSO demonstrating the value that an "Users Forum" could have, not only in allowing users to share usage ideas, to hopefully to Encourage others to try the application.

Great app, that can readily be put to basic use - but which contains numerous features that require exploration / experimentation to fully take advantage of.

Have been using RightNote plus free Evernote account to sync selected notes from Evernote Android app to Windows desktop.

Not a perfect replacement for (long-time-favorite) PhatNotes, but best solution found to date for Android-to-Desktop.

Evernote sync is a nice additions to the other RightNote features.

1. Capture to a webpage type note is NOT editable (shortcut Win+W).

2. Clip to a RichView type note IS editable (shortcut Win+V or Win+A), including combining with another RichView note. You can clip an entire web page including graphics, if desired, thus essentially replicating the webpage type note and gaining editability. Simple formatting is preserved, but complex formatting might not be. I have found this to be all I need in saving web pages, highlighting or deleting parts, etc.

You might want to test this in the trial version of RN.

Scott Youngman @Scott Kettman: Oops, I didn't realize that a webpage type note can indeed be edited! The help file explains that font and background color (i.e. highlighting) can be changed directly. Other kinds of changes including font name, font attributes, add or delete text, etc. can be done if Edit Mode has been enabled for the note. In testing this in the Pro trial version, I had tried to delete text but wasn't in Edit Mode. I misunderstood what was happening.

Scott Youngman @Drive: Let's expand your question to whether the Free, Standard, or Pro version is best for you. It depends on what features you need for the kind of work you want to do, or what features you will miss by not upgrading.

I agree, the Free version really does do a lot -- Rael has been very generous in making all that available for everyone. I used the Free version quite happily over the past year but gradually realized that a paid version would save me significant time: richview formatting, tables, spell checking, spreadsheet note type, indexing of richview and spreadsheets for fast searches, links to other notes, and (especially useful for me) formatted web clips. I think the offer of $15 for Standard version is really a bargain. You might start there, then ask if the additional features such as Evernote integration make the Pro version worthwhile. Give the trial version a try to test the various features.

Ela S. I've gone through the trial version now - and think that your program (Pro version) is the best ever offered. Information tree organisation at it's best.

I am using Evernote, MS One Note, All My Notes, My Info, CintaNotes, SEO Note - but every prog does miss some finesse.

So most thing I am actually interested in is the information clipping: How to get information, text snippets, web sites etc as fast and simple as possible into your information manager? Per mouse click and per hotkey?

Can you thus give some details on the clipping function? Also, does RightNote save the source information and date (eg URL) automatically?

Rael Bauer @Drive: It is true that the free version is quite useful, however it is missing key features that are found in the std and pro versions.

If your needs are very basic you may find the free version sufficient. If you want to use a full featured note taking application then you should look at the commercial versions more closely.

The freeware version is based on a basic text editor with only basic functions, whereas the std version is based on a powerful editor which supports tables, images, web clips, webpage bookmarks, links, advanced paragraph styling etc...

The spreadsheet note supports accounting information, and is also well suited to storing lists of any kind.

The Pro version includes webpage, Evernote and attachment note types. The Evernote note enables you to sync selected notes with mobile devices, and also search for text in images.

The multi notebook search (in Pro version) is something that you may not think to be too useful when you first start using the software. However, after a couple of weeks, when you have a number of notebooks, you will find it to be quite indispensable.

To clip text from a web page:
- select text. Copy (Ctrl+C).
- Open RightNote (Ctrl+Shift+F12).
- Go to/create desired note.
- Press paste (Ctrl+V).

At the bottom of the clip, a link is added with the source url, and also date/time of capture.

You could also capture as follows:
- select text. Copy (Ctrl+C).
- Paste as new note (Global hotkey Win+V). (In this case, make sure you have the right notebook open and page selected beforehand...)

I'm not exactly sure what kind of device you are referring to. Is this something that you can insert into a USB drive and works with Windows? If yes, then it should work ok.

There are 2 ways to install the portable version. (See the download page on our website):
- Portable installer, will run a wizard to install the program on a specific folder on the portable device.
- Zip file, unzip the zip archive to a folder of your choice.

A single license covers both desktop and portable installations.

Robert Chan I have a bunch of images in a folder. I use "File/Import" to import them into RightNote. It was successful. However, when I clicked on an "entry" in the tree, the image does not appear right away on the right side. Instead, there is some info about the image on the right side and I need to click on "Open file" to see the image. Is it possible that I can skip this step, meaning when I click on the "entry" in the tree on the left side the image shows up right away on the right? (I am trying out Rightnote and so far it is quite good)

Jim McGowan I have the Pro version and setup Evernote Sync, but I can't get any notes to go from RN to Evernote. I created a notebook in Evernote to accept the RN notes but unfortunately it remains empty.

I can't find any new features or improvements in V.3 other than Evernote Sync-related. Rael, are there any other non-Evernote-related new features or improvements in V.3?

Scott Youngman @Ely: The ability of RN to organize, format, tag, and search notes is enough to make it an outstanding, productive program. Its ability to capture text and web clips (with URL to the source) doubles that value. I use the clip feature regularly and it's very fast and easy: Highlight the text, then Win+V to add a new note, or Win+A to append the clip to an existing note (no need for Ctrl+C with this method). And in the Pro version Win+W captures an entire webpage to an editable note.

Don't work with images (only) in Right Note, but wonder what difference the Import Settings might make - default is to import them "As Link(s)" - perhaps changing that setting to "As Attachment" would speed up viewing time (shorten delay) - ??

Michael R. At the begin of the installation-process of v3 there is an explanation, which seems to be controversial of my former interpretation:

As it seems I can update until a full year since my purchase is over.
After that v3 will not work any more and I have to jump back to v2.

Re: The link issue, I'm not quite sure auto hyperlinking would be desirable if there is only a small part of the url, since this may lead to auto hyperlinking when it is not wanted. And then it would be difficult to remove the link...

Rael Bauer @Michael: What you said in your first analysis is correct. An update refers to a new version, an upgrade refers to paying for a new release/license.

Your license key from v2 will work for v3 for 12 months from the date of purchase. To clarify by example, if v3.4 is released within 12 months from the date of your first purchase, then your key will work for v3.4 indefinitely. However if after 12 months, v3.5 is released then you need to purchase an upgrade to use v3.5.

We've made the price to upgrade from v2 std to v3 pro, to be the same as to upgrade from v2 pro to v3 pro. The price is $29.95, and it is not included in today's discount.

5) If we uninstall Internet Explorer is there any chance for RightNote to be affected?

Disillusioned I recently "upgraded" from Keynote to the free version of RightNote. I've been considering upgrading to a paid version and now plan to do that today (thanks, Rael & BDJ!).

One question: I was surprised, disappointed, and somewhat irked to find no way to insert a hyperlink (clickable text with an underlying URL). Am I missing something? If not, does the standard or pro version offer that?

Drive Stark Naked Is there any way to save a PDF so that we can actually view the PDF with all of it's formatting inside RightNote without having to click on an open file link that sends us to an external PDF viewer?

I know that we can copy text with some PDFs and it will display inside RightNote but it is text only and I loose the PDF formatting when I do that.

Rael Bauer @Robert: RightNote does not have a function to remove duplicate notes. What I would suggest is: first use a duplicate file remover on your text files, then import the list of files afterwards. There are many duplicate file remover programs available for Windows. Just type "duplicate" in the BDJ search box above, and I'm sure you'll find some options.

2) In the clipper options (Tools-Clipper Options), there is an option for new clips to be created "as child of current note".

3) Yes.

4) I'm a little confused by your question. Do you mean Win+V/Win+A (instead of Ctrl+V/Ctrl+A)? It is recommended that you keep "auto copy when clipping" unchecked, since it was not always consistent. And therefore always press Ctrl+C before paste. Yes- RichEdit only pastes plain text. The Richview note in the std/pro versions supports html formatting, etc..

5) Yes. The webpage note and Evernote note types require IE to be installed.

6) RichEdit may not have full unicode support. This should work fine in the RichView note. There is also a setting in Options-Search-Extended Unicode support, that should help you for global search. Please send further comments related to this to support address.

Peter C1 I too went to purchase the program and I have tried both Chrome & Firefox as well as just clicking on the order link AND also copying the URL and the pasting it, and the result in all cases:

I've noticed that Your own website uses Regnow.com and not shopper.mycommerce.com/checkout/ (except for old V2 licenses more than 12 months old)

Win-A / Win-V = old clipboard (instead of highlighted text) as plain text

Ctrl-C, then Win-A / Win-V = highlighted text as rich text

Brenton Robinson I am experiencing the same problem as Brian W and Watcher 1924. I need to use Ctrl-C before Win-A or Win-V in order to get the correct highlighted clip into RightNote. If I don't press Ctrl-C first I get the previous material on the clipboard. I am running Windows XP Home Edition and using Windows Chrome (I do have IE installed on my computer). I would be very grateful if this could be investigated.

3) Can you garantee that if I take the pro version I will not have the text of my clip doubled when using Ctrl+V and that when I have unchecked the "Download description tag" it will stop inserting the title of the web page in the panel (by "description tag" you mean the title of the page, right)? For the latter I also exited the program and run it again, just in case.

4) The setting in "Options-Search-Extended Unicode support" didn't help for the searching issue, besides, I don't use the global search because I have the freeware version. For several issues you keep refering to RichView note type, even for simple things like the indication of the address when hovering the cursor over a link. You should let potential users know that before they create a large number of notes (maybe you should consider an emulate-freeware-edition mode, like what XYplorer has). So now I can't make a "healthy" searching through my notes under the circumstances I mentioned at the other comment?

What makes you think you don't need to press Ctrl+C?

(There is an option (in the clipper options) to "auto copy when clipping". IF this is checked, then you don't need to press Ctrl+C first. However there was a problem where this did not work 100% of the time, so by default this option is now unchecked. As far as I can see we have updated the documentation to reflect this..)

Rich OBrien I love RightNote. I have it set to start with Windows. I use it all day, every day. I wish I had seen this offer this morning so I could share my praise for RightNote with more people. I didn't see the offer until after 11 pm because I've been gone all day. RightNote is great software and is frequently updated so it is getting better all the time. I wish there was a way to put images into these comments so I could show you the terrific illustrated bookmarks RightNote makes at the touch of a button. With RightNote I can instantly make bookmarks which include the website address, the title of the website, the description if there is one and a large 400 pixel image of the website. I was taking at least ten minutes to manually create similar illustrated bookmarks that RightNote now creates in seconds.
If a webpage is something I wish to save along with my own comments at the top, I do a Ctrl A to select the entire webpage and paste as HTML into RightNote. With few exceptions, RightNote does an excellent job of pasting a webpage that looks like the original.
Ever find a webpage that you wish to change to a larger text size before you print it? RightNote is the best program I have ever found for preparing web pages for printing. A few times when I wish to keep everything exactly as it appears in a browser, I have RightNote save the web page. RightNote is close to being a web browser. I was surprised when I clicked on a link within a webpage and the next web page automatically downloaded into RightNote. Get this software. $29.97 is a great price for this great software.

Brian W @Rael, After selecting the "auto copy when clipping", Win-A now works fine in Chrome & IE (Win7 x64) but WIn-V reports "warning - nothing clipped" (which is correct, no new note created, no pasted text). (A bit strange because I would have expected the code to be almost identical.)

A multiple keystroke (CTRL-C then Win-A) would be too cumbersome.

Brian W Question: How best to easily manage where new clips go?
Suggestion: Add option: After Win-V to create a new note, change the focus to that note so that additional Win-A appends are added to that note.
Why: Typically, I will want to make several notes on one subject (win-A) but when I change to another subject, I would Win-V for a new note and then win-A to continue on that subject. If I want to go back to the first subject, I probably just Win-v again to create a new note, then later go back to RN to combine or file the notes, but at least all win-A appends are on a single subject.
With the current setup, before taking any clippings, one must open RN and set a focus, otherwise the notes could go somewhere unexpected.

Brian W Simple method to combine/merge notes?
(1) Use win-V create several new clipping notes on diverse subjects (without opening RN to change focus)
(2) Open RN, merge notes that are on the same subject, then move them to the correct hierarchical location.

(I tried drag-drop. but no luck.)
(I also tried to highlight a section of one note then drag it to another note in the tree, but this also did not move or copy the text, even though the cursor changes to "+" to indicate that a paste operation should occur.)

Re: panel display: I am assuming you are referring to the note header panel (on top of the note). We could add an option to also display the time. I don't quite understand why you want the date in English. What language is it in?

3) I am not aware of this issue that you are reporting of the text being doubled when pasting. Please can you give some details to support address so I can try to reproduce the issue. I am not sure what you mean by "title of the web page in the panel".

4) The version comparisons page makes it quite clear what is included in each version. I strongly suggest you try using the 30 day trial so you can see how the program works in the paid version. (There may be an item under help: "Re-enable pro trial"). If you have trouble with this please contact support directly.

Richard Blake A version 2 user has the option today to pay 29.95 to upgrade his existing license to v3.x Pro or to pay 29.95 to acquire a second Pro license, leaving the v2 license available to install on a different PC. So upgrading an existing license today doesn't make much sense. Comment?
Does the 1 year free upgrades policy apply equally to paid upgrade as it does to new purchase?
Is there a way to navigate from www.bauerapps.com to page bauerapps.com/rightnote-release-history ?
It appears that prior versions, both major and minor, are removed from the bauerapps site, and apparently from other popular download sites: a v2 user who failed to download v 2.9.0 between its release on July 4 and the release of 3.0 on July 31 is now out of luck. True?

Bits Du Jour's web page is one of the exceptions that doesn't paste well as HTML. Instead, download the website into RightNote. I see that many of the icons don't appear correctly as in Chrome. Rael Bauer is constantly releasing improvements to RightNote. I expect this will be corrected someday.

To create bookmarks with large illustrations (thumbnails) of each web page, you'll need to get the free RichViewEditor from Rael Bauer to create Bookmark Templates. Open the Bookmark Template by going to the Tools Menu - Clipper Options. Using the RichViewEditor I've created Bookmark Templates which make Bookmarks and instantly grab pictures of web pages as large as 800 pixels - roughly 8 inches on my computer screen.

Carsten Mads I’m testing the 30 days Trial and it looks really good… Although, I would like to see the functionality/option like Brian W suggests (Quote: “After Win-V to create a new note, change the focus to that note so that additional Win-A appends are added to that note”). And I’m totally agreed with Brian W in his arguments, for this functionality. Plus another of Brian W’ comments on the “missing” text Drag-Drop functionality between RN and internal RN notes and also external application text.

But - I have one problem (bug or something?) in RN: The Screen Capture function is not working on my system (W7 x64)… When I use the hotkey; ctrl+shift+F11, I get the screen capture session, with four red marks in the screens corners, and then I press ENTER to copy the selected area to the clipboard. Now when I press Win-A or Win-V I get a RN Notification saying; “Warning: Nothing clipped”. It doesn’t matter to change my “Default Note” from let’s say, Ridge View Format to Memo. Am I missing something here?

Carsten Mads To my last comment - I would like to add: When I’m in the RN Screen capture session and I press ENTER to copy the selected area to the clipboard I’m able to “paste” the Screenshot (crtl-v) to RN Rich Edit and Rich View Notes. But not by the RN Win-A and Win-V keys as described.

PS. In “Clipper Options” I’ve tried with and whiteout check mark in the “Auto copy when press clipper hotkey”

Scott Youngman @Carsten: Clipping and screen capture operate differently, so what you experienced is normal. RN's clipping function operates on selected text, but when you have made a screen capture there is nothing selected. Instead, the screen capture has gone to the clipboard, and as you found, you can paste anything from there into RN. To say that another way, Win+V and Win+A are commands to "clip the currently selected area to RN", not general commands to paste from the clipboard to RN.

I need the dates that are saved along with the notes to have a uniformity and not to be different depending on which computer I'm going to use the program, nor I want to have to fiddle with the system settings every time.

I have downloaded the 3.0.3 version. I chose in the settings the richedit note type as default but when I press Ctrl+V it makes a richview note. That way I cannot reproduce the problem with the double text.

Maybe I misunderstood the term (in clipper options) description tag. Where can we find this in the note? Is it the title of the web page we clip from?

Of course a new user is supposed to check out the freeware or the pro or the standard editions of a program (or all of them, depending on his intentions and his needs) but IMHO he is not supposed to check about the existence of some very basic thinks (usually we don't have only one program to check, the developers should take this into consideration). Basic things like being able to see the address of a link without having to click on it and opening in the browser. From what I understand, in the freeware he can't have that because he can't edit richview notes. Some of us maybe have created a lot of notes before realizing we can't have that or the fact that the search in the second language has problems. Maybe the latter isn't so basic or simple (a tecky guy could answer that better than me) but the users should be let know since the beginning that when entering the search terms they have to write them once with the stress mark, once without it, once with lower case, one with capital... maybe with even more variations. When we can use the richview note type the things are better for the lower case - capital case issue but only for the text in the content of the notes; for the text in the titles the problem remains, as does the problem with the stress mark (regardless of where the text is).

Can we create links for notes outside of the current notebook? Is there any way to move a linked note to another page or notebook without breaking the link?

Can we take screenshots in bitmap type?

Can we browse the internet using RightNote?

Is there a greek dictionary for RightNote?

I believe that a practical way (for the user, for the developer I don't know :) ) for handling the clipping according to out needs would be a small toolbar, with a couple of check boxes, radio buttons and action buttons, that would stay on top of the other windows and would allow you to choose if the next clip would go to the current note or to a new one, if a new note would be inserted at the bottom of the tree or as a child note and if it would become focused, if the program's window should come to the foreground to inspect the note or not etc. The user would change easily the essential settings for the next clips and he would keep them as it is for as long as this would work for him. When his clipping needs would change he would only do one or two clicks without leaving the browser or any program he was working with.

Drive Stark Naked Is it possible to save an email to a note?

I tried to save an email from Thunderbird and it saved similarly to a PDF i.e. the email detail was not shown as text. Instead there was a link to the email location in Thunderbird. However RightNote could not find this link when I clicked on it and in fact the link page showed "No file found".

The only way I could link from RightNote to the email was to save the email to a file and then create a note from that file. A link shows and it can be followed to the email with it's detail and attachments etc.

I found I could copy the email text and save that to a note but there is no format detail included nor is there any way to directly access attachments.

Is there some other way to handle this more easily?

P.S. I found only one small reference to "email" in the help file.

Scott Youngman @Drive: I opened an email (in Eudora), selected the entire contents including header information (which Eudora shows in one panel with the body of the message), hit Win+V, and it was added to RN as a new note. This also works in Word documents, PDFs, etc. Basic formatting is preserved but not graphics nor attachments. Alternatively, I have saved emails as a text file (an option in Eudora), then clipped that file to RN. So that is similar to what you tried on your second attempt.

TopDog I bought RightNote Pro yesterday and installed it on my desktop. I downloaded and installed the portable version, it uses the license off of the desktop automatically. As referenced above @ Rael Bauer Hi Brenton, A single license covers both desktop and portable installations.

When I put the portable drive on my laptop it it comes up with the window to enter the license code, if I enter the original information it wont accept it.

Does this mean in order to run RightNote on my desktop and a portable version on my laptop I need to purchase two license's?

Yes, you are correct. After a screen capture you need to go to a note and press paste (Ctrl+V) to insert to the image (so it is a different logic to the clipper). There may be more options in the future.

Peter S Dear Rael Bauer, I have some questions to ask you, because I cant find the answer on your website - well not so far at least, and I am unable to attempt an installation on this communal PC ( I am currently 600miles and 3 days driving away from my own computer).

Question 1: Does the Pro version of RightNote have a Backup-on-Save, OR, an incremental Backup, OR, Auto-Backup function, (or, all 3) so that the User can either refer to an earlier version or the user's work will be saved in the event of a program crash?

Q 2: If the answer is NO, could this be a possible option in future updates/upgrades?

Q 3: I note that some users on day #1 had problems getting the order window to work (with anything but Internet Explorer), do you know if this now works with Firefox &/or Chrome?

Q 4: 32Bit or 32&64Bit

Q 5: is Windows 8 compatability planned?

I have got too go off to work now for and I hope to be back before the offer expires (and hopefully to read some favourable answers too).

Rael Bauer @Flo: RightNote uses the SQLite database engine. Recommendations are more relavent than restrictions: i.e the database engine supports very large files (GB/TB), however for best use of the software, it is recommended that you split data over multiple tabs and multiple notebooks, and keep in the MB range.

Rael Bauer Hi Peter: 1) Yes indeed. There is a backup-on-save function (which is enabled by default) with various settings, the main one being how many backup copies you want to keep.

3) I can't tell you if the problem has been resolved or not, since I could not reproduce it on my computer. It only affected a very small number of users.

4) The application is 32 bit, which means it runs fine on both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows.

5) It is compatible with Win 8. Maybe not reflected in all the documentation...

I use a Text editor called ConTEXT v0.98.6 to occasionally edit Add-Ons/a.k.a. ''Extensions'' for use with Firefox. I appreciate that text editing for computer programming (including a hexi-decimal function) may not have been what you designed RightNote to be primarily used for, however:

There is a source code note, which is intended mainly for source code snippets, and includes a number of source code highlighters. You can also link to an external file. The overall functionality is quite basic compared to a dedicated source code editor, so that would be up to you.

I downloaded the software ONCE on the wrong computer, the SECOND TIME on the correct computer, and the THIRD TIME I did not even actually download the software, I only clicked on the download link. [Windows says the second download is corrupted].

Rael Bauer @Watcher: "Description tag" is actually a field in a html webpage, nothing to do with a RightNote note. This field can be included/excluded when you save a bookmark through the bookmark hotkey.

It is possible to change from one note type to another in the Note Properties dialog (F2). Click on the "Contents" field.

So far you cannot link to a note in another notebook. There is currently a limitation that a link will be broken if you move a note from one page to another.

You can download dictionaries for other languages. The help file has more details.

The problem I was trying to reproduce appeared when using Ctrl+V with a certain program. That was happening with the freeware edition of 2.9, where I could not test it in richview notes. Now, with the trial of 3.0.3, I can use richview notes (and it doesn't seem to happen) but I can' t test it with the richedit ones because when I press Ctrl+V the automatically created note is always a richview one. I have gone to Options\Notebook\Notes\Note settings\Default content type and I have choosed "Rich text format" but, still, the automatically created notes are richview ones. Maybe I should go to Clipper Options and change the New Clip Template?

You wrote "so far" and "currently". Is there a chance that the features I mentioned about the linking between notes will implemented?

Rightnote is truly fine, pretty much everybody should have a notepad supreme, and while some freebies are ok, you do get a lot more with Rightnote and it becomes largely an everyday use. There are worthy competitors, but basically today you can't go wrong with Right. Many of us tried out Treepad, Treedbnotes, Keynote-NF etc. before deciding on Rightnote.

Here are two editing suggestions (if I have not missed them):

Make the paste as text simpler. In Eudora, we highlight the text and tap one special button on top and zoom, we have format from text. Rightnote should have that capability.

Allow the creation of individual buttons with our favorite colors. I would have buttons up there for my fav green, blue and brown and one or two other colors. I am talking about the text color, a feature continually in use.

Scott Youngman @Steven Avery: I think this will meet your need for text color buttons. In Tools - Definitions - Color Definitions - Foreground Colors Count, set the number of buttons you want. Then in View - Toolbars - RichEdit (and any other note type you will use) check TextColors. When the button bar appears, select a color for each one from the color picker. You can do the same for background colors and "mixed" text+background colors.

Thanks Scott. Sounds good, but I'm not sure about "When the button bar appears, select a color for each one...". I did not see a button bar appear at the time of checking "TextColors". (And tried unchecking and rechecking).

However, it works fine with "RichView" instead of the "RichEdit" choice, a button bar appears and each button can be identified with one color. So it may have to do with the difference in mode. I'll read up a bit more.

in the past i had problems when i imported several pdfs at once.
The programm would crash.
I wanted to import them to be searchable ('indexed' i think). I dont remember the exact way, but i think it worked, when i imported the pdfs piece by piece.
I loved the preview of the search very much, where you could see the results in context.
Now it's been some time and as i tried now with the freeware version it seems i cant test it again.

Neil How do you import from Evernote. I set up sync, got permissions, then told it to sync everything. Nothing at all appeared in my rightnote notebook. There;s a subfolder now called Evernote with a 1MB db3 file.

My account shows 52/52 synced notebooks in the integratoin settings. So where are they? How do I get them in my rightnote file?

I managed to get one small one to show in a new page called Sync Inbox. Not even sure how I did that, but where are the rest?

I'm afraid to keep experimenting lest I use my monthly quota up on Evernote. Not currently a paid member. (And it already keeps telling me to retry in 45 minutes.

Could expand on that please? It is a concern that licenses can stop working at some time for a program that has the potential to contain so much data.
Two related questions.
1) Does the program call home for any reason after the license has been validated?
2) Who handles license validation i.e., is it handled on your own servers or by someone else?

Looks like a great program but I always hesitate with any program that might play a significant role in my digital life where I might not be able to use it someday due to activation issues.

Rael Bauer Hi Neil, thanks for your question. You should see the synced notebooks in that Evernote folder. Do you not see any?

A separate RightNote notebook is created for every Evernote notebook, and you open one at a time from the menu under the "cloud" icon on the main toolbar.

The Sync inbox page is created automatically. Please take a look at the second video on this page: http://bauerapps.com/evernote-tree/ as it is likely to fill in some gaps for you.

No need to fear using up your monthly quota. That is only for uploading new notes to Evernote. Downloading notes does not use up your quota at all. However, Evernote has placed a limit on how many notes can be downloaded per hour for 3rd party integrations. So unfortunately, you may need to wait for this time delay until you can import all your notes. The help file has a topic called "Evernote sync rate limits" which provides more information.

Rael, Dextor is right. An upgrade is not an upgrade if it is going to bomb out after awhile. It becomes a ransomgrade. And adds the risk that if something happened to Rightnote the data could be lost, if v. 2 does not recognize the data of v. 3.

Now, I am a very happy light user on version 2. (I have to check whether I want to upgrade or buy 3.) The software is very fine, and I looked at a number of note programs.

However, please correct the representation above. Don't call something an upgrade when it is temporary and can create problems. It is a trial, and not a good method for a trial if version 2 does not recognize version 3 data. (You would want to do the trial on dummy data.)

We are very sensitive about this kind of thing.

Rael Bauer Hi bvssunnydate, I have not looked at the askSam database format yet, however RightNote can import rtf and html files, which most programs allow you to export to. You can also import all such files from a folder, including subfolders.

Re your second question: RightNote does not have such outlining capability at this time.

Rael Bauer Hi Dexter,

Please note the license you obtain will work indefinitely for the current version of RightNote and all minor version updates i.e. all v3.x.x. The "12 month" stipulation applies to using a v2 license for v3. That will only work for 12 months from when you bought the v2 license.

The program does not "call home" to validate the license. i.e. you do not need an internet connection for that. The license key itself contains information about when it was bought and for which RightNote version.

Here is a thought. We understand that you cannot give a big Bits discount on upgrades. It is almost a better idea to buy 3 and give my license to 2 to a friend. (Is that doable. I don't think you have any free earlier licenses. This is not a criticism, btw, your business model is generally excellent.)

This is a suggestion for you and many. Work out a 25% discount on upgrades at the same time you do the bits. Let's assume your 2-3 upgrade is $30 (is that right) even a $5 to 7.50 discount would make us all part of the Bits party.

Good will, an encouragement to follow Bits, and encouragement to do the upgrade, and early. Granted, it means more work for you in setting up the store for the day, since you have to do some sort of license check somewhere along the line.

Currently the database format for v2 and v3 is the same, so you can try out v3 at no risk and go back to v2 if desired. If there is a database change the readme will warn you about that.

Neil Generally liking the tool, but one annoyance is that the editor does not recognize URLs as most editors do.

In fact, if I want to write notes about some webpages, without importing them, I can drag and drop to a rich text note (but not create a new note via drop). But the URL is just plain text. To convert it to a URL, I press Ctrl-K. Now it offers to link it, but unlike most editors, it doesn't offer the text as the URL field, only the text field. And of course, since I dropped the URL to the note from Chrome, the URL isn't on the clipboard (and the text field in the dialog isn't selectable for copy).

I recommend at least checking on Ctrl-K if the text is a URL and putting that in the field, if not just automatically recognizing a URL in the note and linking it automatically.

Better than a word processor, RightNote helps you to write and organize your documents, notes and records so you can more easily find what you've worked on. You can copy and paste any text or formatted text and pictures into RightNote including web pages. And you can also save web pages directly into RightNote. RightNote was great when Bits Du Jour brought it to my attention in 2012. And Rael Bauer keeps making RightNote better with frequent updates. He is open to your requests. Mary Wilson I downloaded this and tried it out. If I did not use the program "MyInfo" I might change. The only major difference I could see between MyInfo and Right Note is the Evernote connection. I also found that the Tags are easier to insert in MyInfo than Right Note. Can anyone think of a major difference between the two programs that would make it worth my while to switch. Currently you can solve this in 2 ways:
1) Simply press space at the end of the url text and it will turn into a link
2) You can also use Edit - Scan for links

Neil Thanks Rael..that's great as a workaround for now...I was pressing Return/Enter, never tried space since I wasn't typing any more after that. (Another fix/addition would be to do the same for Enter as you do Space!)

Is there any way to have the Evernote pages part of my main file, with non-evernote data? I've enabled multiple windows but I can't seem to copy or move notes from the imported Rightnote files to my "main" note file. At least at this point, I was trying to only have one Rightnote database. The beauty of databases is not having to deal with files.

Rael Bauer Neil: It is possible to copy notes but these will then be new notes. It is also possible to move notes but then they will not be part of the original Evernote notebook.

At this time, it is best to keep your Evernote notes separately, in a corresponding RightNote notebook.

bvssunnydale Follow-up to previous problems with disabling "Download Protection" - Firefox and Internet Explorer display totally different pages - you might want to look into that - based on previous experiences with this kind of thing I tried IE and it worked fine so sorry for my whining but you should warn people that IE works better than Firefox for this particular sale (or fix the Firefox issue before going live with it..).

Tony Leger I purchased the software. Think I have figured most of it out but have a couple of questions:

1. when I copy and paste from another application, it always shows the Source (where it came from and the time/date) at the bottom of the paste.

This is totally unneeded and annoying for me. How do I get rid of it??

2. Is there way I can view notes that are synced to Evernote on my iPad?

(My folders are Synced into my Dropbox account so I can access them on my ipad.)

1) Under Tools-Clipper Options, for Bookmark Template, select the "blank" option. That should solve your problem. Also if you paste as plain text (Ctrl+Shift+P), that will bypass the clipper template system.

John H Can Right Note print out its whole contents in one single coherent and formatted document? I am looking at Scrivener which has a tree structure for creating and arranging a document and then prints it out as a formatted PDF or ePub book. I purchased RN the last time around on BDJ but was too late to incorporate into my current research project which is a mess of hand written notes and various different text and spreadsheet documents.

Scrivener is designed for writing and printing books and not a replacement for all the functionality of Right Note but would be great if I could get RN to create and print out a large book.

Thanks for the clarification. The confusion was from the 'fine print' of the listing where it says: "Email license activation is required without a hardware footprint".

Normally when I see 'license activation', no matter what is in front or bedhind it, I immediately think of needing to validate the license against a server somewhere before installation - what is kind of what is implied by the 'what's this' note to right of the note in the fine print.

Purchase yesterday and first look looks good.

Mary Wilson Currently, I have been trying this program and like it a lot as it is easy to use. Found out it also easy to transfer web pages from IE/Chriome. Unfortunatly, I have been using MyInfo and Surfulater up to this time and have a lot of data between the two programs. If I am to get this, I need to be able to transfer the data from one program to another. Does anyone know if I can easily transfer all of the data from these programs to this program? I am also concerned with with some information I am reading about upgrade time. Does this mean that if I purchase version 3 today and within the first year or even tomorrow you upgrade to Version 4, my version 4 will only work for a year and than stop working and I will have to either go back to version 3 or pay for another version 4?

Rael Bauer RightNote license policy CLARIFICATION:

Hi people, I re-read a post that I had made close to the top of the messages regarding our license policy, and realised that the way I had said it is likely to cause confusion and misunderstanding (as people are still asking questions...).

So let me clarify: A license will never stop working. The license details only refer to how long you can receive free updates.

Within the same major version, all updates are always free. So for v3.0 - v3.9 (which is likely to be at least a year if not longer) all updates are free.

If someone buys v3.9 a month before v4.0 comes out, then even though it is a new major version, they will still receive free updates for 12 months. However, after 12 months, they will no longer receive free updates for v4. They will have to stick with the last update version they were entitled to, or upgrade.

1) It sounds like the folder you've installed to does not have the neccesary permission to delete files. You should see a file called ".read". If you delete that, then you won't see the readme again.

2) So far you can't see the modification dates.

3) No.Typically note names are different and it is usually clear to know which note is referred to.

Unfortunately we do not have a specific import feature for those programs at this time. However, if you can export your notes to rtf/html then you can import them into RightNote. If the tree structure is maintained in the export, then RightNote will also be able to import the files and maintain the tree structure.

fizo Regarding update licence: please developer then keep updating the old version instead of stopping any development when a new major version comes out. I am one of the users that has bought a pro version and within 6 months version 3 came out and no new updates for my version. Consider that browsers and Evernote get updated very regularly and affect the clipping and EN integration, I have noticed RN ver2 hanging more regularly when clipping large webpages. Forking out 30 dollars every X years where X is determined by the developer to update to the latest version is too much and too uncertain. Drop the upgrade price and focus on enlarging the user base or consider an annual license fee (such as EN premium has) then it is clearer upfront what using the software really costs.

Rael Bauer fizo: I believe our upgrade policy is quite generous compared to other products on the market. I don't quite understand why you feel $50 per year is better than $30 every 2 years (for example the time between v2 and v3).

As mentioned before, your v2 license entitles you to free upgrades for 12 months, which from the sounds of it will include a number of v3 updates.

v3 is in fact the update to v2, so development was not "stopped." You can continue to receive those updates for 12 months after purchase, including any new major version during that period. Then you can continue to use the last update in your validity period forever, without paying anything more. And _all_ updates are free within a major version, even after 12 months (that was about two years for the lifetime of v2). Personally, I think that is much better than a subscription model.

Watcher1924 Thanks. At the Options pane on Search Tab, how do we toggle the "Exact Phrase" check box using the keyboard? Both this and "Content" have the "e" character underlined. When I use Alt+e only the "Content" is toggled. I managed to do it with the arrow keys but it's not practical; you have to first use Tab a couple of times plus it gets the focus like it was in a totally different spot than it is.

The help document mentions "All terms" in the paragraph "From Options pane on Search Tab" but I don't see it.

Thanks for the information, i found the import file menu.

But i have a problem i want to add different files, at the beginning it worked - later on new files - the "attachment selection menu" dont appear.

So i cant any new files.

Then i tried to import a folder - that works.

I tried again to import one file it works, other new files wont import because the attachment dialog did not appear.

Is there a limit to import files?
Is there a limit for the size of the files?

Why i cant import any other files?

i tried to add a file attachment with the menu FileImport

But the better way is to right klick the mouse "add silbing" and the go right and choose Attachment - then it will work.

Is only the question how great a file could be?

I tried the Nvidia Geforce drivers and RightNote dont react anymore,
so i have to end the program with the taskbar.

fizo I have a version 2 Pro license and I had tried version 3 only on a test database. I had not upgraded my working database to version 3 because I was under the impression that the program in version 3 would stop working after 12 months from purchase of the version 2 license. The wording 'stop working' was also used by Rael (the developer) in his earlier response in this discussion thread. Now if I understand correctly it is only further updates that will 'stop working', the last version 3.x in my validity period will work indefinitely. Please confirm (my RN database is critical to me and I don't want it messed up by upgrading/downgrading). And please find a better way to explain or simplify the update/upgrade policy. Thanks for a great note manager, it is the best I have found.

Rael Bauer @Mappi: If you do a batch import using File-Import the program will use settings defined under Tools-Options-Main-Import. See the setting for binary files.

For best control you should import manually or drag-drop into the tree.

I have not tried big files. There is no specific limit on the file size, however performance will be affected if the files are big. RN is intended to be an information manager where typically one might want to attach pdf or doc files of moderate size.

IMHO the standard and pro editions should have the option of showing the notes' paths (both in the History tab and elsewhere). I don't think only few users make a lot of quick new notes without titles and have a big amount of them with the name starting with "New Note". Plus there are titles that a user usually uses (yes, I know) in many folder-notes and sub-folder-notes e.g. "links", "resources", "comments", "contact info" etc. As it is now, the user has to check many of the results with the similar or *** identical *** names because he is searching - for example - for the "links" sub-folder-note and the program presents the ones for RightNote, Internet Explorer, Revo Uninstaller and for all the programs you have saved links for (and it's not like it's practical to instead search using the program's name and then scroll down to "links", because maybe you always put it close to the end or you don't have a specific spot for it or you want to find the "links" of three or five programs and you don't want to have to type the names of all of them and go through five different sets of results).

Don't tell me that - when you use RithNote as a plain user - you never face the temptation of using the privilege of knowing where to find the already synthesized path string of a note. ;)

Rich OBrien RightNote is like having a PIM - Personal Information Manager, Word Processor and much more all in one. The search function hidden in an area over on the right does lightning fast searches so you can instantly find anything you've collected into RightNote. Besides being constantly improved to work with EverNote, the most fantastic thing about RightNote for me is its Clipper function. I was spending 15 minutes to half an hour each to create little tables containing a small picture of a website I visited, the website address, the website name and a note about each website. Then BitsDuJour brought RightNote to my attention. Now I see a website, press a key and instantly a table is created with a good sized picture of the website, the website address, name and space for me to either write a note or copy text from the website and paste it in the table's note area. I wish I could show you pictures. If you're doing research on the Internet and RightNote's Clipper sounds interesting, ask Rael Bauer for the free copy of the RichView Editor needed to easily make the tables used by RightNote's Clipper. With the RichView Editor, you can design the tables exactly how you want them, place the website address and site name where you want, make the text the size, color and type face you want, and make the screenshots the exact size and proportions you want. Then press a button and instantly everything but the note area is filled in for you automatically. I'm not a programmer but it was easy to figure out how to get exactly what I was looking for using the free RichView Editor. One last thing. Some software I've relied on for years is updated only once a year or less often. Improvements and fixes aren't done fast enough. RightNote is actively updated almost monthly. Over the last 30 years, a lot of important software - WordStar, WordPerfect, Partition Magic, PC Tools, Harvard Graphics - has been abandoned by the original developers. It is wonderful to use software produced by people who love software and constantly make it better.

Rich OBrien RightNote's Clipper arrives with a default table called a template. I wanted to customize it. The little picture of the website was too small. I asked if there was a way to change the table to make it more what I wanted. Rael Bauer gave me the free RichView Editor.
You'll see there is some simple code you can place in your table to tell Clipper where to automatically put the website picture, the date and time, the name you give your template, the website address, and the website name. It's really easy or I couldn't do it. I've probably made 20 different tables trying to figure out the best size and arrangement. You'll be able to name your table templates and choose which one to use from the Clipper Options list on the Tools Menu.
Across the top of each of my tables I put the date and time and the name of the template. My naming scheme reminds me of how large the picture is, whether it is on the right or on the left and the over all size of the table. The table templates are in a file ending in .rfv.

If you're doing research on the Internet, visiting a lot of websites, RightNote with its Clipper function could become invaluable.

PC USER I would second that. Definitely the best notetaking software I have used. Easy to use; can easily find everything you input. Attachments are indexed. So will find those also; can color code folders/notes; change fonts; secure notes.

Just a great and flexible piece of software! I use it on a daily basis especially to store items from the Web!

Cary Adams Having much difficulty with Excel file import. Import changes my formulas and then tells me that I have syntax problems. For example, the original XLS cell is:

=IF($C10>D$6,0,D$6-$C10)

After import it is:

=IF($C10>D$6";0;D$6-$C10)"

If I remove the " and change ; to , (what the original Excel file had) the syntax error goes away and the cell functions.

I've tried drag and drop, and import with the same result on multiple files. I also tried copy/paste, but none of the formulas or formatting pasted, only the values.

I'd really like to start using RightNote, but manually editing each cell is beyond reasonable. Also... Find/Replace doesn't seem to work within the files, so I can't globally swap semi-colons for commas.

How do I make this work?

Scott Youngman I agree with other commenters that RN is an excellent note-taking program -- better than roughly a dozen others I have tried over the years. I consider it one of my essential programs, and use it many times every day for both work and personal projects. One of its greatest benefits is easily clipping web pages to become editable notes (a different feature than the bookmarks mentioned above by Rich OBrien). That alone is worth the price of the program, and has saved me many hours of manual copying and pasting.

My only disappointment with RN is a number of small but awkward traits which I think would be easy enough for Rael to improve. For example:

- Ctrl+Backspace deletes the previous word (this is expected) but strangely, Ctrl+Del deletes only a single character (it should delete the entire next word).

- Ctrl+Shift+Up/Down.arrow selects text to the previous/next paragraph (this is expected) but strangely, Ctrl+Up/Down.arrow scrolls the page (it should move the cursor to the previous/next paragraph).

- In the find & replace dialog, the "Replace with" field displays the text used in the previous operation, but "Find what" does not (it is always blank).

Quirks such as those (and in other cases, small bugs) make RN feel somewhat rough, and unfortunately Rael has not addressed them months after being notified of them.

Rael Bauer @Cary: I have 2 suggestions: 1) Could you please send such a file to our support email, so I can further investigate the issue. 2) There is also an option under Tools->Options->Editors->Spreadsheet: Use internal import/export engine. Please uncheck this. You are likely to have better results, but it is a bit slower. Bear in mind the spreadsheet control is designed to be lightweight, so it doesn't give you the full power of Excel.

Rich OBrien After copying formatted text or copying an entire web page to the Windows Clipboard, the RightNote mouse menu gives you a choice of pasting as text or HTML format. RightNote also includes its own screen capture alternative to Snagit. While Snagit is slow to show up, RightNote's screen picture taker is instantaneous. For years when I wanted a screenshot of Snagit or the Snagit Editor, there has been no way to do it. RightNote provides the way.

My number one wish for RightNote is to be able to edit the titles above each note and have those changes linked to the titles in the note list on the left.

Amit Hello,

I have liked rightnote after using it for quite long and want to buy the pro version, but there are some features that are very desired in the software (rightnote pro). Please incorporate these - 1. Gradients schemes for backgrounds - that for background of notes, gradient schemes can also be used. I am also using kingsoft wps office (and free writer kingsoft), and their gradient schemes (many present) are just brilliant. The notes in rightnote, if can have gradient schemes, even if some like those many present in wps writer, can add really good looks to all the notes.

2. Font styles and effects - The font styles present in wps kingsoft writer (best msoffice alternative), make text writing a pleasure, please look into the software trial (WPS OFFICE - ), and if you dont want to download the trial, please see those all present in the free writer software of kingsoft download from here - ( http://www.kingsoftstore....-free.html ) (software - Kingsoft Writer Free 2013 v9.1.0.4550). In that you can see for the menu item -> Format -> background -> gradient (and then presets). it also has other options too there.
And for font styles, there is the menu item Format -> font and you can see effects as engrave, shadow, emboss, outlline. These styles make the written text really look apart. I use rightnote, but keep using and switching to kingsoft application for these 2 features.

Please take these 2 requests to be added really into rightnote pro, for that will make the software more beautiful and pleasure to work with, for many users like me that like beautiful texts. I am buying the pro version here, hoping to see these requests confirmed in pro soon. Thanks a lot.

Unzip and run. Then open one of the clipper bookmark templates. They can be found under: Libraries\Documents\My RightNote\SystemTemplates.

You can edit/modify the template to your liking - i.e. change font attributes, or change picture dimensions or change the table (i.e. template) layout, as long as it keeps the fields you see there in curly brackets. I recommend you save it as a different filename. You can select the template from the clipper options (Tools->Clipper Options->Bookmark Template)

As mentioned in the help file, you create a bookmark by being in the browser window and pressing Ctrl+Shift+F7. This will save a bookmark into the current note in RightNote.

Susanne Bought this a couple of years ago and can state categorically it's the hands-down best organizer available, period. I have used a program called My Notes Keeper (which is also superb) for many years, but when the developer appeared to have fallen off the face of the earth (although, to be fair, the program is once again being regularly updated), I got RightNote and now use both. Seriously -- and I am *not* associated with the Bauer team in any way -- don't even waste your money on anything else because they won't come close. And their customer service is just as good as the program itself.

Does this mean that I will be able to see my notes in Evernote online in the hierarchal structure that Evernote otherwise does not support? And what does "selected notes" mean? Only certain types of notes, determined by RightNote, can be stored in cloud, or does it just mean notes that I select?

Rael Bauer @Toni: To your first question: No. You will not suddenly have hierarchical notes in Evernote. The hierarchical info is only stored and visible in RightNote.

That being said, if you take a look at the "Insert->Table of Contents" action, you can create a note that will represent the tree outline, and then sync that note to Evernote. (See the vimeo video on the website in the Evernote section)

RightNote has different types of notes: Richview, Source code, webpage and Evernote note type. What selected means is that only Evernote note types are synced with Evernote, not the other types.

MojoMan RN is a brilliant, effective swiss army knife of kit. I love it.... it is probably the single best productivity, data organization, memory / brain add-on that I have ever used in thirty odd years of computing. It is what One-Note promised without all the quirkiness and much greater usability. The best PIM out there and I've bought, demoed or trialed about everything.

Rael Bauer @Bill: Yes, you should use something like Dropbox for this purpose (I use Dropbox for this myself).

Be sure to have some backup in place because on rare occasion Dropbox can chew on a file. Also, when using Dropbox you should not use the same file on 2 computers at the same time, and be sure the file has updated from Dropbox (e.g from station 1) before using it on station 2. (Sometimes there is a delay before Dropbox updates..)

Bill Blackledge Rael, thanks - duplicate use of files is a problem we have with Dropbox. Having said that, I'm impressed with the Rightnote's Export Web book function - I could see us publishing notes to an html site for regular reference.
In case it helps anyone else, I have just found that I can export parts of a tree from UltraRecall (as RTF with folder structure) and these are readily imported as notes, with the folder structure determining the tree. And RightNote can export in the same format, so it is good to know it isn't a data dead-end :)

Tony Lee I purchased this nearly a year ago and will vouch for its usefulness.

It is something I use every day now and often the first thing I open after browsers after I boot up every morning.

The system is very flexible allowing you to reorganize your notes with ease if need be.

Another feature I like is how well it works across computers (through Dropbox).

Support works well to as they answered some questions I had when I first purchased it.

Also, when I found something I did not like and suggested a change, that change was incorporated in the next update!

Bill Blackledge One more thing that might interest people: I noticed Scrapbook import as an option (Scrapbook is a Firefox add-on which stores web pages for off-line viewing). As Firefox has helpfully removed my Scrapbook menu during one of its many updates, I tried importing my Scrapbook folder into RightNote, which it did without a hitch. So I now have the potential of RightNote gathering and organising notes / web pages etc previously stored in TreePad, UltraRecall and Scrapbook. And in future I will be storing web pages in RightNote. Order placed!

Ennovy The latest version I use is 2.9, I never upgraded.
I tested it on my new PC with Windows 10 and it seems to work just fine.
I always used the so called portable version and I wanted to test portability to.
So I worked some time with RN in a sandbox and later I checked what changes RN has made in the Windows registry and I am amazed about how many RN entries I found.
So I wonder why you promote RN to be portable software?
Is this also the case in version 3?
Portability is very important to me and this means that all settings are written to the application folder and nowhere else.

Rael Bauer @Ennovy: RightNote needs to store some license information in the registry in order to enforce our license requirements.

RN also makes some temporary use of the registry while it is running, and then deletes these entries when the program is closed.

The term "Portable" is used in the practical sense: All settings are stored in the application folder where ever that may be, and any use of the registry does not interfere with another installation of the program on that computer.

This behaviour is still the same in the current version.

Rich OBrien RightNote Pro is superb. Its Clipper function grabs thumnail pictures of websites, along with the website name and address and collects everything into a table that it lets you design with the RichView Editor that you can get FREE from http://bauerapps.com/file...Editor.zip . No other program does anything like it.. I have used RightNote Pro constantly since June of 2013. It just keeps getting better. I've gotten so much value for the money I paid that it is only reasonable that I pay for the release of version 4 later this year. RightNote adds to and works with EverNote, RightNote is already so perfect that my wish list for improvements is very short. I wish RightNote would always keep its open icon on the Taskbar instead of sometimes hiding its icon. RightNote should use standard Windows .ico icons in addition to bmp, png and gif. More importantly, I'm looking forward to being able to edit the titles in its tree by editing the title at the top of each document the way I now can in MyInfo.

@David: Although being similar in purpose and general function, upon closer inspection they do have different feature sets. No question OneNone is a powerful application, but here is a short list of some features found in RightNote that are not in OneNote:
- Evernote integration :)
- Webpage capture. (last time I looked OneNote saves the entire page as an image... that was a shocker for me, when I saw that...)
- Webpage bookmarks,
- Spreadsheet note, source code note.
- More to come...

With regards to sync, you can sync databases across computers using a file sync service like Dropbox. No pen annotation.

The general layout of the program is the same/similar as in OneNote with notebooks and tabs. RightNote's tree structure can handle larger amount of data and sublevels.

Rich OBrien Thank you Rael Bauer. I installed new version 3.5.0.1 and see that you have implemented the feature I want the most.

Before version 4.0 I'm hoping RightNote will begin to always keep its open icon on the Taskbar instead of hiding its icon.

In version 4.0, one more feature I'm hoping for is a WYSIWYG Fonts List which shows each font as it actually appears.

Shawn Murdock This has been a great purchase. I use it all the time for notes and for data. Its a nice mix of notes app and database features.
I do have a problem with version 3.5. All of my notes files, created with 3.4.1, will not display any embedded pictures. I tried to open all of my various notes files and no pictures; its like they never existed. I downloaded a clean version of 3.5 and same results. I found an old 3.4.1 installer and reinstalled, then open one of the backup note files and the pictures displayed again.
I know this is not a support forum but the main website does not have a forum.

Kelly Hamblin I really wish I had a little more time to evaluate this nice application. I finally found a few moments to install it. The first thing I tried was to sort a list of text and couldn't find a way to accomplish it. Surely there must be a way without opening a spreadsheet. So now I am wondering what else might be missing or maybe it is just me. Hope I have a few minutes later to check back.

MBPBo How does one get to try the 30 day trial of the Pro version? When I install the trial version, it is only the Freeware version. I am interested in how well RightNote's clipping function preserves formats of web pages and with the trial Freeware version it seems that any web content clipped is only simple text. I see no way to activate a trial of the Pro version.

RichV Rael, thanks for the answers. As for a form template, an example is a structured form (redundant, I realize!) that you need to use multiple times - say for a job function.

Is there a full manual for the product? I'm asking because I'm wondering if the Export to Webbook function can be used on a smaller level than the entire notebook. As an example (and please let me know if I can't do this), I work with clients in a health care context and need to provide them with documents (e.g. herbs, aroma and diet to include and avoid). I'm wondering if I can import an RTF format and export it in this way so they can carry it around on their mobile devices.

If there's a manual available I can stop bugging you with these questions and just dive in. (thanks)

Rael Bauer Yes, under Help->Help Contents you can access the help file. You can also refer to the New User Guide.

Export to Webbook only works on the whole file. You could copy out specific notes or pages to another notebook and then export that. See the Page Transfer and other tools under Tools menu.

Still - in the FWIW department at this late hour - wanted to add my voice to those who have already praised this program: Have been running RightNote Pro since November 2012, and it is one of a handful of programs I would consider "Essential."

Not "Perfect" - & not without room for Possible Improvement (would dearly love to see an Android version....) - but still the Absolute Best General Information Manager that I am aware of.

Sebastian Guzek I am about to make the jump and purchase this great app. Just wondering about the following:
1) Is there a global hotkey to create new notes while having it minimized?
2) Any plans on enabling undocking of individual notes for better multitasking (similar to Milenix MyInfo)? If not, maybe ability to edit numerous notes side by side just like in TreeProjects?
3) How can I flag (change urgency level)? Is the only option right now to use Tags? Would be nice to have an alternative tree view that only shows the urgent notes.
4) If I edit attached Outlook .MSG file by adding graphics to it, does the attachment get updated and doesn't lose the changes? I have seen this issue with the new attachment feature in CintaNotes.
5) Any plans on adding some powerful internal file viewer like Oracle's OutsideIn to be able to preview attached files and see search keywords inside?
6) If working between multiple notes, how can I quickly switch between them without having to navigate through the entire tree again? Again, taking TreeProjects as an example, I can lock each note as a separate tab. Does RightNote provide something similar?

Dierk Oops: Blindly repeated "30 day money back" from another post, when that is not the case! OTOH, there is a FREE Version (that drops some features but still gives a nice "look and feel" opportunity).
Also (I THINK - want to be cautious, having already misspoken!!), you can Download & Evaluate the Pro Version (for 30 days?) before it reverts to the Free version feature set.

The "Standard" Version adds some nice features that most users will want (like Spell Check!), but the real power kicks in with the Professional Version: the Multiple Database search is remarkably fast, and once you have multiple RN files the Side By Side view becomes an important feature.

As with any Information Manager - especially free form ones - personal preferences will determine usage. Currently have over a dozen RN database files, and while the Side By Side view has been helpful in (Re)Organization, the Multi NB Search has been a tremendous aid in finding less-than-optimally-organized data.

["Why so many different RN files?"]
Put it down to "Personal Preference!" Probably 1/2 dozen of them are "active" (that is, new information is added on a regular basis), while the balance are "static" - that is, no longer being added to, but still useful for reference.
Example: One of the Static RN Files contains the data Exported from PhatNotes - my previous "PIM" of choice. PhatNotes' great advantage was offering both a Windows AND a Windows Mobile version, with robust LOCAL sync, and nearly identical feature sets. Alas, PhatNotes never made the transition to Android.

Of course RightNote also lacks an Android version. But - as much as I LOVED PhatNotes - the RN desktop app is much more powerful than the PhatNotes desktop version (and PhatNotes was pretty darn good), and I have NOT found a "great" Android note taker that provided seamless / easy data sync with a desktop counterpart.

(Evernote integration may be useful to Evernote users - but I gave up on Evernote after it LOST substantial chunks of data. Something that has not happened with RightNote!)

My current ANDROID / DESKTOP approach is multi-pronged:
1) eWallet for Important Discrete Data (essentially anything that can be / should be stored in a Forms-oriented Database: think passwords; account information; warranty information; user log-in info....). Multiple databases, multiple formats, local sync option: an essential app. (Use LastPass, with its cloud based syncing, for NON-Critical web sites. The Really Important bits are kept in eWallet...)

2) Essential PIM: Android / Desktop PIM with local sync option, and ability to integrate Google Calendar entries. Strong on Calendar & Contacts management, weak on Notes (and VERY WEAK on Notes on Android version) - but still a good place to put Quick Notes / Reminders, knowing they will be carried over from device to device.

3) TextMaker Mobile: simply have not found a great Android notes app. TextMaker Mobile is the best of the Android "word processing" apps I found, so that is where most long-form notes are taken (devices are a Galaxy Note 2 and Note 4: the S-Pen stylus works great with the MessagEase keyboard for taking live notes. The Note 2 is currently in service as my "PDA" - have 3 batteries for it, & thus can use it "all day"!)

CamScanner and ezPDF (paid versions of each) also see frequent usage on the mobile device. For now, all the Android based notes are simply synced to the desktop as discrete files, and I rely upon a combination of Directory (Folder) structure AND Copernic Desktop Search (paid version) to locate specific data.

eWallet and EssentialPIM will remain in place - but an Android version of RightNote would certainly Simplify the taking, storage - and Usage - of long form notes!

Sebastian Guzek Sorry, also to add to my list of questions above, is Evernote the only way to sync RightNote with smartphones? Occasionally, I would like to send only certain reminders/notes to my android or iphone and avoid having to sync the entire database.
Lastly (I promise), if I place the portable version on DropBox or a similar online drive service, can I run it directly from there?

J Hello Rael,

As mentioned several times in earlier comments, the RightNote (RN) tool tray icon has problems.

When RN is set to start at Windows Startup, RN does 'partially' start but does not show its icon in the tool tray. It is neither shown nor hidden.

The only way to show the tool tray icon is to re-start RN, get the 'multiple instance' warning and then exit out of RN by clicking on File|Exit. Restarting RN then properly shows its icon in the tool tray.

Manually starting RN, so far, seems to work properly with the icon showing in the tool tray.

I hope this bug can be fixed.

Rael Bauer @Sebastian: 1) Actually not. There is a hotkey to create a clip while the application is minimized. See Options->Global hotkeys
2) Yes, something along those lines. No time frame at this point.
3) Yes, tags would be good for that. There is also the recently added reminder feature. You can just set a reminder without any date. That sounds like a good request: i.e to filter tree by tags.
4) Hmmm, would have to check that out myself.
5) Yes I would like to add some internal viewer, for some standard file types like pdf. Not sure which others. Oracle's OutsideIn is extermely expensive.
6) You would use the note history tab for this. (on the resource panel). This is also something I would like to add more specific handling for.
7) The Evernote sync is actually only syncing Evernote type notes - not the entire database. In your case you may consider exporting a note to dropbook for this purpose.
8) Interesting question. I haven't tried that myself. It should work. Personally, I have the application outside of Dropbox, and only some files are stored in Dropbox.

tech club Hello, a question to the developer.
Is there any way to move a paragraph up and down with a key combination?Something similar to Word when using Shift + Alt + Up or Down Arrow key. In this case there is no need to pre-select a complete paragraph, it will move the complete section wherever the cursor was placed, and also moving or displacing the surrounding paragraphs accordingly. This is very different, to what it is currently possible, by selecting a chunk of text and dragging to a new destination with the mouse.

I have been a happy user since a decade or so and I congrate you for this wonderfujll software that I have been using several times a day since then.
It is one of the best investments I ever made in softwares on a use/price ratio.

I have some questions regarding verison 4 :
- the protection system, with the ability to protect at the note level (that is protecting some notes but not others) is key to the product usability. Will this system be kept in version 4 ?
- the portability (zip package) is also key to the value of RightNote. Will this be kept in version 4 as well ?
- last, do you plan to improve the Spreadsheet notes type, which is the weakest of them all regarding features and usability ? It is really lacking compared even to low level spreadsheet softwares. I understand this is not a replacement for libreOffice spreadsheet but in its current shape it is hardly usable.

Pavi Johnson Hi, a few quick questions as well. I really like the source code approach. Files can be linked to, and then edited inside Rightnote - this makes its utility as a source code manager very strong.

Questions though:
1) Can the same be done for MS Word file? Now I can't seem to get them to even display inside Rightnote. Can they display and be edited inline?
2) PDFs. Can they be displayed inline? I have tried 2 pdf viewers without success.

SoftCollector Looks nice, but do I really need it if I already have Microsoft Office? There is always the chance of the a smaller company going bankrupt, or databases getting corrupted for whatever reason, and then all the wealth of information will, unfortunately, be lost. There is too much risk involved.

1) No. MS Word is a specialised file format. The program can import from and export to Word format, but you can't live edit a Word file in the same was as you can with a plain text file.

Rael Bauer @SoftCollector: OneNote is certainly a useful note taking program. RightNote is a specialised note taking program, and provides extra features for the serious/power note taker. For example, OneNote only allows three levels of tree notes. RightNote allows unlimited levels and also includes power features like tree hoisting and folder tree outline. With regard to webpage capture, OneNote takes a simple screenshot of the page. RightNote captures the actual webpage with text included so you could copy/paste that information in the future. (Something you cannot do with OneNote). I find the RN bookmark feature really useful and as far as I am aware OneNote has no equivalent. Again it really depends on your needs.

With regard to data, you can export your RN notes to common file formats such as rtf, MS Word, MS Excel. Some see it as an advantage to be the master of your own data as apposed to storing your data in the cloud, where other bodies may have access to it.

RD User Into our 4th year using RightNote (Professional), and it is an "Essential" tool. Am not aware of a better Information Database program - certainly not at this price level.
Still long for a Native Android App - not an Evernote fan - but at least RN's Webbook support makes reasonably static information available on a mobile device, plus RN offers a robust "Export Notes" function. Hopefully RN will be around "Forever," but having had previous Text-Based Databases / PIMs disappear from the marketplace can attest to the value of having good Export capabilities.

- Most Recent Example: PhatNotes. It never made the jump to Android, and the desktop version just faded away. But all of our PhatNotes data currently exists within a dedicated RN database - and is accessible via RN's "Multi-Notebook Search" function.

Recommendation: Get RightNote Pro, and start out with multiple databases. You'll thank me later - even though RN provides assistance in transferring information between Notebooks, good initial organization helps.
IF NOTHING ELSE: download the Free version of RN & spend a few minutes looking through the "New User Guide" - it is a RN database ("Notebook") that provides basic usage instructions & examples of various program features.

PS: A "User Group Forum" would be useful.....

Adolphe Be aware that this program (like many Windows applications, unfortunately), is not high DPI-aware. I had the free version sitting on my PC for a while, and was tempted to explore it once again because this offer was coming. Depending on your display and your settings, you might get : exceedingly small icons, tiny UI fonts difficult to read or partially cropped out, unreadable spreadsheet notes because line height does not accomodate text height, general ugliness and unpleasantness of UI, etc.

This, in my case, on a PC which is not "high DPI" by any stretch : a 24" destkop monitor with a 1920 x 1200 resolution. However, I have set Windows 7 to display at 150 % (because otherwise everything is way to small on the screen), and it's this perfectly standard option on Windows which breaks Right Notes' UI -- and many others'.

This is a known, deplorable situation which has been going on for years. More information here :

MK Great product, probably best in its class and I've tried and bought most of them!
It's an info manager not MS Office.
If provider goes bankrupt, it doesn't stop the product working.
If database gets corrupted you will have made a backup - just like with your MS Office file which could get corrupted?.
You can export out to MS Word as well, so no info lost.
Next to no risk involved.

RS Rael: I understand that you don't want to misrepresent, but I don't quite understand why you won't share with us the new features and upgraded functionality of v4 if it is to be released within a few weeks, as you indicated. While you might decide to pull the plug on a feature that isn't working as it should, the vast majority of work has to be done so you must know what will be included (unless the v4 release itself is in question).

Also, I think it's unfair to current license holders not to know what the upgrade price will be when you are offering free upgrades to new users as part of the purchase price of the current version. As a result, you deprive us of the ability to take advantage of this BDJ if the upgrade price is higher. I think this is a disservice to your loyal customers. (And, as a general rule, it seems to me that the price of upgrades should either remain the same or be reduced, absent a significant reason to the contrary.)

Regarding both matters, I urge you to reconsider.

CFGuy Hi - if more than 1 Professional license is purchased, can RightNote Pro be used over a network? IOW, even if 2 separate users are not able to add/change data files at the same time, can the main data file be stored on a (shared) "network drive" that allows each user to access the same file(s), albeit it perhaps at different times, and change/update data in those files (stored on a shared network drive)? Rael Bauer @CFGuy: We did add some support for this scenario a while ago, although I haven't tested it recently. You may need to enable the option "Check for file writes over Samba network drives" (under Autosave Settings), depending on your exact setup. Nowadays I would suggest you consider using a file sharing service like Dropbox etc. for this purpose. In either case - yes - it is important that usage is serialized between the different users. See the help topic: "How to share a database between multiple computers".

Gunars Lucans 1) Rightnote currently can index .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc. Can Powerpoint files be added also?
2) Is there any way to import information from Surfulator? Are there any plans to add different import capabilities?
3) Any chance of supporting outlining in RichView notes?

tech club Hi,
is there a place were deleted notes are stored, like a recycle bin, o a way to undelete notes?

Also a suggestion, hopefully a copy/paste format (or format painter as some called it) button could be added to the toolbar, I know there is a control+ f7 / f8 (copy / paste style), but I personally prefer to push a button than taking both hands off the keyboard to do a key combination. MS Word keeps the last format copied until pressing ESC, so you can reuse it, in multiple places without having to copy the format each time in between. This method is also faster, than creating a new style.

I understand users are curious to know what features are being worked on, however, I don't believe this is the correct place to get into a discussion about future or upcoming features. Since we are selling our software here, it should be clear that we are selling what already exists and not some future feature or features.

When we say "v4 will be a free upgrade to anyone who purchases a license today", this is not a special dispensation to people who purchase today. It is simply highlighting our standard upgrade policy which includes free updates for 12 months, including major version upgrades, which is something that few, if any, other vendors offer. Also, we want to indicate that RN is still under development and we have plans for future features. However, as mentioned, I do not want to get into a discussion of actual specifics.

Rael Bauer @Flo: You are quite correct. However, once a major version upgrade is involved then the 12 month rule applies. So a license purchased today will only be valid for 12 months and not all future v4 updates (this is stated on our website). Additionally, I can tell you that when v4 is released, we will be changing our update policy to include free updates for 12 months only and not all future v4 updates.

Steven Avery Rightnote is a fine program, no doubt. Rael, you don't really have a Vimoe/YouTube voice. (Neither do I, or most people.)

Also the videos, finding #2 on Evernote is tuff.Fortunately your documentation is good and is itself the first Rightnote Note. It told me where the Evernote foder is hidden. Windows 10 actually has that path as logical, so you might want to show the physical too.

Now, for my main point.

Evernote is the key question for those of us who like stuff like their Windows/iPad sync (even if Evernote thinks they have to go into other wonderful cosmic ventures). So your idea of synching is an excellent attempt of the best of both worlds, as is your selective notebook feature.Nice. The Evernote Sync is already a big part of its experience, 2 devices in Basic. Fortunately, your sync is not a device. So far, so good.

My first possible concern. Each Evernote Notebook opens up a full-blown Rightnote Window. In my case, I would usually like to see notebooks open up as a tab within a Rightnote instance (at least as an option). This is the type of natural use of tabs. If I try to open up 20 notebooks in one account, it will be far too unwieldy. with tabs it would be excellent.

Granted, people use "Notebooks" in Evernote in different ways. You are probably thinking in terms of very few, and all the breakdown occurring in notes. But we often have dozens. Tabs !

I really don't want to change my structure too much for the Rightnote possibility. However,looking at Rightnote again,I might rebuy (I have 2.6) and look to use in certain cases (e.g. personal Bible research, which is 100% Windows) even if I am undecided about the Evernote element.

In fact, I am pretty sure I will buy.

Note: I am not real happy about your twelve month upgrade policy. That, I think,is an error. People like to think in terms of version releases. You have a fairly loyal following. People are simply not going to upgrade from 4.2 to 4.7 (I know I am not) so you are simply adding a layer of confusion, with a bit of frustration. More pain, for very little gain. If you have to accelerate a bit new version releases, that would accomplish the same end, as long as some significant features are in fact added.

Steven Avery Along the same line, I figured a good test would be to take an existing note and see how it looks after a sync. So I tried to take the RightNote Help Guide and see if I could sync it into a blank notebook, or a notebook with a note RNUserGuide. (I set up a special new Evernote and it gots its folder in the right place on the c:/

I was not really able to do this. Do you have instructions as to how to sync a well-structured RightNote into Evernote. Granted, Evernote will lose the structure, but this is important in testing the sync.

RS Rael: Actually, most developers offer all minor updates (for the same version) as part of the purchase price, regardless of the timeframe. So, your current policy is actually more restrictive, except in cases where a new major version is released. However, you've now indicated that you will make it even more restrictive with the release of v4. I believe this is a mistake, and urge you to reconsider. I find it obnoxious when a developer charges for minor releases, which, more often than not, are focused on fixing bugs and refining existing functionality--it's an affront to loyal customers. As such, as a matter of principle, I will never pay for minor updates.

Of course, if the yet-to-be-determined upgrade cost is higher than this BDJ offer, then you are putting current license holders, who wait to purchase v4 until it is released, in the absence of any information about this major upgrade, at a disadvantage over new buyers. I think this is wrong, and I just don't understand it. Indeed, I've never heard of a software developer that doesn't offer at least the salient features and changes of a major version that is due to hit the market. Clearly, if v4 is to be released in a few weeks, as you indicated, then the coding of any significant feature or change has to be all but completed, and you are currently beta testing the release candidates. If you have plans for significant features that you haven't yet begun, as you suggest, then either v4 will not be available in the timeframe you referenced or these features will not be adequately tested.

Finally, your assertion that BDJ isn't the right place to inform users and potential users what new features your new version will offer is preposterous. Indeed, the IT-savvy crowd that frequents BDJ is precisely your target audience and one of your best marketing opportunities. Yet, for some reason, you continue to express a curious unwillingness to provide any information that is inexplicable to me, and makes me ponder whether there isn't more to the story. Indeed, if you truly embrace this logic, then you never would have informed us that a new release is imminent. Accordingly, I wonder if v4 will be released shortly, and if the new features are attractive enough to upgrade.

That being said, I'd be far more skeptical if you hadn't already proven yourself with the track record of previous releases--RN is a great tool. So it remains to be seen whether v4 meets this high standard. Please know that I'm a fan of your software, so I hope you'll take my comments constructively, as this is how they are intended.

_*_ Own the Pro version. The issue I have had in the past is RN not pasting images into a note from a copy-and-paste. Now copy-and-paste appears to work, but there is a new issue. When an image is resized it crops the image instead of simply resizing it.

Is this intentional or something that needs to be looked at?

Peter Gabriel I already have the pro version 3 and have just purchased pro version 4 via BDJ just now and updated the program.

I have started the program but it does not have the favorites toolbar as shown in the screenshot even though favorites is ticked in the toolbar settings.

How can I get this fixed please?
