What are people saying about RipTiger Full

fran harter Hi,

First topic:
I was watching some online TV (when my regular programming was crappy).

I tried several different downloader apps for streaming video, but nothing really worked.

QUESTION# 1

Can this work with sites like hulu, or are they somehow thwarting the use of such apps?

Second topic:
I was going to order some training via a place that requires a Screencast account. I think it uses camstudio to deliver it's training videos.

Question#2:
Will this software download such training videos, made with camstudio? Or camtasia?

Thanks in advance.

Tanya Black @ fran harter

RipTiger supports the majority of streaming video formats. You can check if it works with the specific web-sites you are

question 1 - RipTiger Ultimate does support Hulu. Occasionally Hulu changes their streaming technology in order to block programs like RipTiger. In such case, our developers work on restoring compatibility with Hulu as soon as possible.

question 2 - We are not sure which technology camstudio is using. Your best bet is to try downloading with the trial version before you buy.

Robin Edwards I've just given the trial a shot. Works great with BBCi Player, but using a proxy service, I can't get it to pick up any Hulu videos even though they are playing fine. Is it currently working with Hulu?

Robin Edwards Sorry, got it working with Hulu but its bizarrely recorded the outer player options and buttons too (such as the time line) and does the video need to playing ion Hulu for it to capture once its grabbed the URL?

H. H. Hallo,l
what's about the prodcut activation, when making a new install of windows or changing operating system with a new install or buying a new pc. As far as I know, companies like adobe have the opportunity to deactivate the product before such a procedure, and then activate it again after installing the new system or pc. I'm asking this because Imade a bad experience, having to install windows newly before a holiday, and then could not activate a bought software again, the support didn't answer promptly, and the software I spent a lot of money for fwas unsuable during a time where I especiially intended to use it. After this I decided not toy buy any software, which only allows one activation withouth contacting support. Please apologize emphasizing this - perhaps there's no trouble with rip tiger.
thank you for answering soonly in advance
with kind regards
H.

RipTiger works via proxy if you set this proxy in Internet Explorer and reinstall RipTiger. In order to download video from protected sites like Hulu, you need to download them using Internet Explorer and you need to keep the window with the video open until the download is complete. You can minimize the window though and continue browsing the web. These details are covered in the manual on our web-site.

Garry Jantzen Hi
RT worked on my Win7(64bit) Prof. Now it doesn't capture anything - not even YouTube. There's a little "progress bar" flash for half-a-second but that's all.
I cleared the browser cache, restarted RT - still not working.

Mike M. I downloaded your trial-program with the hope it would be possible to record a webcam-session from an (adult) webcam-site (c..4). When clicking with the right mouse-button on the shown video(-stream) there comes up a flash-menu, so I thought it should be recordable too.

Unfortunately it didn't. It just recorded the intro, which appears before the real content shows up. And RipTiger did this over and over again.

Is this because the stream(?) is somehow protected and is there a way to overcome this protection?

Tanya Black Mike,

Have you tried this via Internet Explorer? Turn RipTiger off and then back on. Open the stream in Internet Explorer. If it is indeed flash video,- RipTiger should be able to download it.

If you need further assistance, contact our support support[at]riptiger.com and they will look into it for you.

Ron Russell I recently purchased the RipTiger Ultimate download.  I have not been able to record any Hulu TV shows or any shows from the NBC website.  I can record YouTube videos but that is not why I bought it in the first place.  Your website says this product can be used for all videos from websites with only a few exceptions.  Am I doing something wrong or does the software just not work on most websites?  Please advise. Stuart Cousins Hi

I have just tried to run RipTiger on a trial basis and when I open Windows Explorer 32 bit the browser crashes. I use Windows 7 and as flash haven't updated Flash Player to 64 bit I use the IE 32 bit version without any other problems.

I Tried with the 64 bit browser and it didn't crash but several websites I use won't work as it is a 64 bit browser. In addition, I thought I'd test it and found that I needed to have flash upgraded for the video to run. As I said eralier there isn't a 64 bit Flash update available.

How can I get this resolved

Thanks

Tanya Black Hello Stuart,

Thank you for your input. A small number of our users has reported crashes in IE. We couldn't reproduce it internally but we are investigating the issue.

We will be releasing a new version of RipTiger next week. Also, make sure you have the latest version of Internet Explorer installed.

In the future, please forward technical questions directly to support[at]riptiger.com

Thank you.

SoftCollector The trial is very limited, downloading just a fraction of the video. How do I know the program actually works? Also, when I installed it, a message came up stating sth or other to the tune of: "You system is lacking the resources needed to play/convert captured video" (which by the way is not true) and then proceeded downloading and installing stuff never mentioned by name. What kind of attitude is that?

Tanya Black @ SoftCollector, downloading a fraction of the video is the intenended behavior of our trial. The purchased version downloads full videos without limitations.

Regarding the extras that RipTiger offered you to download,- these are just RipTiger-specific codecs and components that ensure you can download and play the maximum number of video formats. It's not a feature, nor and add-on, more of a important program component, that's why there's no explicit description of what it is.

The reason why we ask you to download the Extras separately, is because they get updated frequently, and we want to make sure you always have the latest version.

Hope that answers your questions.

Brian H Hi - Does the "Turbo Capturing" (that allows for "up to 10x faster video stream capture") feature work on all types of computers (and processors) or is it only for "dual core" systems, etc ... Also, I didn't notice any EULA listed. Does installation allow for desktop and laptop, and is there "hardware footprint activation" involved (which can make it more difficult if one ever upgrades computer hardware components)? Thanks. :-) -Brian

Turbo Capturing mostly depends on your internet connection speed.
The EULA is included with each RipTiger installation (you can install a trial version to take a look at it before purchasing).

The license is "per one computer". However, if you need to reinstall Windows, our support team will generate a new license code for you.

RipTiger has two modes - simple capturing (for popular websites like YouTube etc) and advanced capturing (advanced websites).

Simple capturing works in any browser (Firefox, Chrome included), but advanced capturing works in IE only.

Wally L Dear Tanya,

Does Rip Tiger come as a part of the Sound Taxi Media Suite or is there a similar/better/worse program in S.T.M.S.?

Do your products require online activation and if they do, have they got any footprint?

If there is a hardware footprint, does the footprint include desktop and notebook, OR, just one device, OR unlimited, or what?

Finally, if the user is upgrading computers, can they go online and automatically revoke their license and install it on the new computer, OR does the user have to contact Ramka to arrange the swap over?

Yes, RipTiger is one of the products included in SoundTaxi Media Suite.

Our software requires online activation, meaning one license is good for activation on one PC. However, you do get free upgrades to future versions of the software.

1. Is the software primarily designed to capture video from "well-known" sites, such as YouTube and the like, or is it designed to capture video from pretty much any site that is using a familiar format?

2. The write-up, above, states "As soon as you start watching a video online, RipTiger springs into action, saving the video to your computer, and continuing to do so even if you browse the internet or exit your browser completely."

Sounds great! Really!! And ... does it offer an opportunity to name and choose the save location for each video, or does it just go to a default location and provide some default name?

3. Features panel says "Capture streaming video on the web with no loss in quality."

Sounds great!!! And ... when a video is available in multiple formats, such as flash and mp4, how does the software choose which source to use? Or does it ask? Or ...?

Thanks very much!

Tanya Black @VLM

1. The software was designed to capture specific protocols - Flash Video, Real Video, Quick Time video etc., and not built around specific popular web-sites. RipTiger download the majority of web-sites utilizing these formats without problems.

2. RipTiger auto downloads videos once it's launched. You can set the download location to anything you want in the settings. RipTiger automatically tries to save the video with the correct name from the original web-page.

3. RipTiger downloads videos in the same quality / source that you are watching. If you are watching flash, it will download flash, if you download mp4, it will download mp4, etc.

You can also download the trial version and look around before purchasing.

some months ago I wrote about a Problem with RipTiger (see above, 19th September).

Today I tried it again on this streaming website cam4.com with an interesting result. When RipTiger is running the streaming-video is not displayed at all (and of course not recorded too).

Jerry S Well, this thread needs some happy words: I've been using Rip Tiger for several years and am very well pleased with the product. I use it regularly with YouTube and similar sites and am pleased to say it works fine. No muss, no fuss and I seriously cannot remember it ever crashing.

There's a list of sites and services known to work with RipTiger at http://www.riptiger.com/r...talog.html .

Customer support has been pretty much okay, but not perfect. Activating on new machines has not been a problem.

I have two Media Suite license currently, one for my main machine and another for my laptop, and will purchase a third when the Media Suite is offered again.

In any event, RipTiger is one of those products that simply works. No drama, no hassles: it just works.

Brad I bought Sound Taxi Media Suite last year where RipTiger is but one of the components packages within this fuller featured Media Suite package. So I have used the Rip Tiger component regularly for sometime. What Rip Tiger does it does very well. It is very stable, I have never had a lick of problems with it.

With that said are there equally good software packages out in cyberspace which do the same thing, absolutely, but I must say for the price Rip Tiger is offering the software at, you just cannot beat it.

I also use Jaksta Streaming Media Recorder, and I also like Wondershare Streaming Video Recorder.

No matter what some naysayers might otherwise say about Rip Tiger this is a good reliable software package.

Tanya Black Brian,

The capturing speed depends on your internet connection speed. Also, it depends on the specific web-site. On some web-sites up to 10x capturing is possible, while on others RipTiger can only capture in real time speed due to the limits of the streaming technology the specific web-site uses.

VLM Tanya Black,

Can I run RipTiger in a mode where it does not capture EVERY video I ever watch, but only those I choose? For example, can I right-click in a video and say "download this", much like I can using RealPlayer? Or can I set RipTiger to pop up a message that asks, each time I play a video?

Also, does it remember what it has done, so that it does not record the same video when I replay it?

I'll add my vote for Media Suite bundle. The day is young!!! :)

There's no record-on-demand that functions the way you described in RipTiger.

We have designed the program to be as easy to use as possible, and that's why it just auto downloads videos that you watch in your browser.

You can also test the trial version to get a feel of how the software works. The trial version limits downloaded videos to 5 minutes or 50% of the video file, but is otherwise fully functional.

2) Can it capture from tv tuner also ?

3) And which all browsers it can capture from - opera too ?

Tanya Black Amit,

1. What is meant in the description is that RipTiger can capture TV shows / TV series streamed on the internet.

2. For high quality video, RipTiger can capture TV shows from Hulu. Many others should work as well.

3. RipTiger cannot record shows from your TV tuner, it's focus is downloading streaming video off the internet.

4. RipTiger works with all browsers, including Opera. But for hard to capture web-sites, it's recommended to use IE for better compatibility. In other words, if some video won't capture through a 3rd party browser, try capturing it in IE.

You can also test the trial version to see if RipTiger works for capturing some specific web-site you are interested in. The trial version limits downloaded videos to 5 minutes or 50% of the video file, but is otherwise fully functional.

SoftCollector Pros:
1. RipTiger Ultimate is the only video stream downloader I have tested that can download videos in browsers other than IE. This is a big +. I am using Goolge Chrome and hate switching back to IE to do this or that.
2. It has a built-in transcoder that lets you save the captured content to *.avi, *.wmv, *.rm and a multitude of other formats. This function is very handy.
3. Following my negative comment during the last promotion here they have made amends and now the software is less prone to downloading obscurely defined packages from the internet (codecs, etc.). It seems though that still the software needs to communicate better to the user what and why it is trying to download additionally.

Cons:
1. The on-off button may sound like a good (simple) idea, but it also means that if the software is by default "on", then it starts downloading a load of unwanted material from the page you are currently viewing – for example, advertisements. This can also be switched off (for *.swf files), but only after you have delved into the Settings section. I agree with VLM above that it would make better sense to choose what and when to download. What if the page contains several clips, ads, etc. and I only need one of them?
2. After running the software for an hour it started consuming all my CPU resources and I had to close it. I hope this will not happen very often. As far as I could tell there was no specific reason for this occurrence – no files were transcoded, etc.
3. The main window says current version is 3.3.8, the Settings window says it is 3.3.8.1. Things like that make the user think that not enough attention is paid to ironing out the UI.

Conclusion:
1. It seems that RipTiger is actively developed and therefore I expect that it will be further perfected in the future.
2. It is still the only stream ripper (to the best of my knowledge) that supports Chrome, Firefox, etc., so in this respect it is your best choice.
3. At the price above it is worth the money.

Wishlist:
1. I hope multithread downloading can be introduced (as found in the download managers). Video files are quite big and this can speed up the process and reliability considerably.
2. The selection of content to download should be made less automatic. Please, give the user more control.
3. Single-click on the taskbar icon should switch the software on / off. If this is not possible, then at least single-clicking should open the main window. Or make this an option. At the moment I have to click twice to open the main window.
4. Have you thought of introducing shortcuts to simplify operation?
5. Introduce an option to control how much resources are used for transcoding the files. No one wants all cores of the CPU to stay at 100% for several minutes.

Kind Regards,
SC

Tanya Black SoftCollector

We appreciate you taking the time to write an in depth review of RipTiger. We will take your suggestions into consideration.

To address some of the tings you mentioned in your Wishlist:

1. I am not completely sure what you mean by multithread downloading. If you mean downloading multiple videos at the same time - this does work in RipTiger. If you mean downloading a single video in multiple threads to improve download speed - this is technically impossible for many reasons. Most video web-site impose limitations on how their videos can be streamed / downloaded. This usually means only one connection to the video stream can be made. In some cases, it's also impossible to capture video faster than real time speed.

5. The conversion mechanism in RipTiger uses modern algorithms, just like our converter products. This means that RipTiger will use all available resources on your PC to perform the conversion fast and without slowing down your PC. (the conversion is performed at low priority). We will look into the 100% idle load issue though.

At the moment we can't test the specific video you linked, since it seems like the web-site requires a paid subscription.

SoftCollector Dear Tanya Black,

Thank you for your reply.

1. Regarding multithreading: what I meant was downloading the same video in several parts. I can see that this cannot be implemented.
2. I have started downloading several (around 8-10) files from Vimeo and YouTube and both cores of my CPU have been at 100% for about 30-45 minutes now. This, in my opinion, has to do with the conversion. I have set files to be converted to *.mkv. Most of the downloaded files are *.flv and *.mp4 The name of the processes eating my resources are MCConverter2.exe – there are several such processes running simultaneously, each taking up 15-25% of CPU. It all adds up to 100%, permanently.
2.1. Now the conversion is finished and all instances of MCConverter2.exe have disappeared, but RipTiger.exe still consumes 40-45% CPU... doing what?
3. Is there an option to NOT convert downloaded videos? Why not leave them as they are (*.flv)? There should be an option like that.
4. Finally, there is no help provided with the software. There is help on the site, but some topics are not explained. For example: what is "compatibility mode"? We need more details in order to make an informed decision.

Kind Regards,
SC

2. & 3. We will add the option to NOT convert all videos after downloading in one of the future versions.

4. At the moment we are in the process of re-writing the Help section for RipTiger. The Help section is hosted on the web-site to make sure our users have up to date information, even if their software version is not up to date.

Regarding, the compatibility mode, it should only be used for troubleshooting download issues with long videos (30 minutes +).

At the moment downloading from Hulu works fine, but downloading from Netflix doesn't. (our developers are working on this)

SoftCollector First, let me start by saying that I bought RipTiger Ultimate, so now I have a vested interest in seeing it get better and fixing its shortcomings.

1. There seems to be a problem with the converted videos (and conversion is not optional, as pointed out earlier) – at least for the *.mkv format. The original downloaded *.flv and *.mp4 play perfectly, but the converted *.mkv videos crash my computer, by breaking down a display driver. I have deleted all converted files and restored the original downloads, with which there seems to be no problem.

2. I feel that the implementation of a non-conversion workflow should be a priority, and finding out what is wrong with the conversion process is a must (both format-wise, and the simultaneous conversion of files which hogs computer resources). This is crippling an otherwise nice piece of software.

I look forward to these problems being fixed.

Kind Regards,
SC

Amit I would also like to say that there MUST be an option in the ultimate edition to turn off automatic conversion.

Thanks.

SoftCollector One further idea:

Current situation:
When a clip is originally opened in YouTube, it plays in lower quality, and since RipTiger starts automatic downloading, it begins to download this lower quality version. Then I check for an HD version of the clip, and if available, set that version for playing.

Now, RipTiger starts downloading this new version as well. Even if I open the main window and set the first, lower-quality version, for deletion, it may be deleted from the main window, but remains on the HDD.

Solutions:
1. RipTiger should be able to 'sense' that a new, higher-definition version of the same video has started streaming, and automatically cancel and delete the first, lower resolution one -- both from the main window and the HDD.
2. If a download is manually deleted from inside the main window of RipTiger, please, also delete the video from the HDD.

Proposal:
3. At the moment the downloading and encoding processes use the same visualization in the main window – orange bars fill an empty white rectangular box: once for the downloading, and for a second time – when the encoding progresses. It is very difficult to figure out which of the two processes is happening at the moment – they look identical. This needs to be changed.

Kind Regards,
SC

We appreciate your continuing feedback for our software, and rest assured, I will pass on your comments to the developers.

Regarding the automatic conversion, we will definitely modify this behavior in a future version. However, I just want to clarify that even after the conversion both files remain on your hard drive - the original flv / mp4 and the converted file. So, you should be able to use the original file if you wish to.

Regarding the mkv file crashing the video driver, we are doing extensive testing of the conversion feature on this release, and this is most definitely a problem with the video driver that you are currently running on your machine. Are you sure you are using the latest driver for your video card? Have you installed RipTiger extras (which contains the latest codecs for correct playback)?

As I mentioned, we will be altering the automatic conversion feature in the future.

Regarding recording internet radio to mp3, this is legal for personal use in most territories. To be completely safe, you should check your local copyright and fair use laws.

Brian H Hi Tanya- Thanks for getting back to me regarding my questions, I notice that all of your programs have "hardware activation", which can be a problem for people like me who more frequently upgrade components and equipment. If we make changes, within reason, is there a problem with requesting and getting additional activations for you line of products? Thanks! -Brian

Rick Truell Amit: "but is it legal to record online radio stations"

No, it is not legal to record radio stations...whether online or over-the-air. For a lengthy explanation of why, see this forum post: http://www.bitsdujour.com/view/id=18147/

Tortuga Hi Brian
About the HW activation, could you please tell me where did you see that statement? Usually, that kind of info is written in the upper right box, either under Features or Policy. I checked, there is nothing there.
I just bought this, but my PC will go to its resting place in the graveyard ... sooner or later, as they all do
Somehow, I only saw your post AFTER buying it!!!
Wd «NOT» have done so had I known. Hardware activation can easily become a major problem, and I have enough of those as it is!! Darn!!!
Already regretting ... :/
Thanks in advance
Peace

One license code is valid on one PC, in this way it is tied to your hardware. However, upgrading hardware components in most cases will not affect the activation, only reinstalling Windows or moving to a new PC will.
In these cases, we do offer have a procedure that allows users to move the installation to new Windows / PC. Our support team handles this.

In the discussion thread that you linked the last person actually got it right. "Copyright laws differ from country to country. They are not all the same all over the world. "
In many countries it's legal to record internet radio for personal use.

SoftCollector Dear All,

This is just an update on RipTiger:

1. It is possible to stop the automatic transcoding of downloaded files (although the user has been granted little control of the matter). When RipTiger asks to download the codec package you should answer 'no'. Then *.flv files downloaded will remain as they are, which will save you both time and CPU load.

2. As of today there have been no new versions released, and none of the fixes / changes, promised by Tanya above, have actually been implemented. I hope they will be in the future.

Kind Regards,
SC

Tanya Black SoftCollector,

Thank you for your feedback. We are already testing the new version of RipTiger internally and it includes the ability to disable automatic video conversion and many other improvements.

We want to make sure the new version works well, so it will be released after everything is tested and ironed out.
