What are people saying about Screensaver Factory

Michael Mortimer Bottom line first, I am surprised BITS is offering the enterpise edition of this program. The "Pro" version is far better for the casual screensaver creator or even someone who wants to make screensavers and sell them on eBay for example.

The pro version would be a far better BITS deal over the enterprise edition. Since full price for the pro version is $40, we could get it for $20, I suspect. The enterprise version is more for sophisticated business users, the type who don't hang around BITS nor who would buy the typical BITS offerings.

Anyway, I will post a separate review of this product since I have been a user since 2005.

Michael M This program is a BLAST. Back in April 2006 I bought it from the developer Karlis Blumentals.

The company is very professional, for example, they get back to you when you have a question. (I give high marks to any company that communicates well).

Most important about this kind of software is that it works on the first try. When I made my first screensaver (with a couple movie clips), I figured that would be the true test of its abilities and capabilities. My creation installed as a Windows screensaver and ran perfect.

The reason this software works is because Blumentals is the master of this type of screensaver creation programs. They have this type of software down to an art.

You can use the wizard that lets you have a working screensaver within minutes or you can do things manually, step by step.

An example of the fun you can have: for your personal screensavers you can import multiple video clips into the program (such as downloaded YouTube clips) and then have the Factory turn them into a single screensaver. How cool is that. Very.

Another idea: You can make screensavers with pics and video of family or friends. You can create fancy presentations (meaning better than Windows slide show) dub in any music or narrative you want and end up with a 15 minute screensaver that can be set to loop over and over. You can then send those to family and friends.

Isn't a custom made screensaver a far better gift to send loved ones instead of some crappy box of candy no one wants or for Valentines Day flowers that will be dead in a week .

And in this economy, what a life saver this program is. Get some blank CDs, a CD labeling kit, and some artwork (even a family photo), and make a cool custom CD label.

One year my friend, who has three cats and is an animal lover was brought to tears when I gave her a screensaver I made for her. It had short movie clips of her kitties, funny photos, some amusing meowing audio and pleasant music, all combined into a screensaver. She still uses it, she loves it that much.

I am a little dismayed about the more expensive enterprise version being offered on BITS. The program is still worth the $45 since the pro version, which is what I have, goes for $40.

So the enterprise is priced at just $5 more. I guess that's not bad, but like I said in my earlier post, if the Pro version was the BITS offering we probably could have got that for $20. In these hard times, $20 is a lot easier to handle. Agree?

Sidenote: Coincidentally, on July 14 this year I had e-mailed Blumentals and asked what it would cost to upgrade from Screensaver Pro 4 (that I have) to Screensaver Pro 5. Consistent with the Company's reputation of getting right back to me, Gatis Avots said to check the Site link provided to see what it would cost to upgrade to version 5.

For me it will cost $50 ($49.85) to upgrade to enterprise. To upgrade to Pro 5 would be $40. So even for me this BITS offer is a good deal, if I go with the enterprise edition.

But I still would have liked us get the Pro version for $30 which would be half off, or even $20 that would be the kind of deal BITS is famous for.

Bonus Tip (Actually a warning): If you make a video screensaver and install it, be very careful. Specifically, remember to turn down the volume on your PC speaker system when you go to bed. Why?

One time I made a music video screensaver. I had friends over and everyone was impressed with my homemade screensaver. I even cranked up my 300 watt PC speaker system so I could show that the screensaver sounded fantastic with my uber cool surround sound PC speakers, huge amp and sub-woofer. (Yes, I was showing off more than anything.)

I guess that's not a bad thing except I have my Windows screensaver set to activate after three hours of non-use. We went to bed that night and about 3:00 a.m. I nearly shot through my bedroom ceiling because the screensaver activated and started playing its music full friggin blast. I am surprised the windows did not break.

Everyone freaked out, especially the cats who like to sleep near the computer because of the heat.

So be careful, these screensavers can be dangerous, especially if the powers that be determine you must be punished for showing off to friends.

Well I am tired of talking about this. Pardon any spelling or grammar errors since I am too lazy to check it.

Stefan Hauber Great price...

Is it possible to enter use own code (e.g. a dll) somehow inside ScreenFactory?

My idea is e.g. to get the user's computer-id id and load from a internet-adress (e.g. www.my_site.com/screensaver/id/pic1.jpg) (with id replaced by the computer-id.

Or to read an encrypted-image-file and decrypt it within ScreenSaverFactory it before showing.

Karlis Blumentals At the present moment it is not possible to use your own programming code inside screensaver.

You can, however, use Screensaver Factory as an external screensaver generator engine by feeding it XML data files and receiving SCR files as an output, but this feature is "well hidden" and for advanced users only.

Karlis Blumentals Yes. You are allowed to create screensavers for unlimited distribution regardless of the purpose. You are allowed to sell created screensavers and there are no royalties, in fact this is the whole point. Screensaver Factory allows you to create screensavers which you can turn into profits in whatever way you can - end-user entertainment products, marketing tools, enhanced services etc.

Stefan Hauber Can you explain this XML-use a little further, perhaps with a reference to an article?

With this is it e.g. possible to download a different picture every day, perhaps in the form www.mysite.com/pix/yyyymmdd.jpg, where yyyymmdd stands for the current year, month, day?

Does XML mean, you can embed JavaScript-programs into it? With that above should be easy possible, shouldn't it? (I myself have no experience with JScript, but perhaps now is the time to learn...)

Chris Davidson I emailed Blumentals on Monday but unfortunately didn't receive a response yesterday so I'm posting here given that this offer is strictly time-limited.

On the "Compare Editions" product page, a free additional license is advertised with the Enterprise edition of the software. I'd just like to check how I can gift this second license that I have no need for myself. It doesn't say anywhere obvious that it can't be transferred.

Thanks.

Karlis Blumentals At the present moment there is no support to add your own programming code. We have received very few requests about this and still maintain that if you are a developer capable of writing dll files, you should have no problems creating your own screen saver from scratch.

What is possible - Screensaver Factory Enterprise can be launched from command line for automatic screensaver production based on input XML file.

Software Guy IMHO, the standard version has many features and will likely meet or exceed the needs of most users. The pro version allows addition of RSS feeds among other features.
http://www.blumentals.net...itions.php compares the editions. Please read the features carefully.
They also have a page with examples of their screensavers. The screensaver examples do not run as a flash demo, but must be downloaded and installed to view. If you are interested in this software, then it is worth the time to see what the software can do.
Question: Is this promotion for the standard edition only, or are the other editions also offered at discount? Thanks!

Michael R. Under 'Auto updates for your screensavers' I saw the description ''Make screensavers that can automatically update themselves by download new images, flash or videos from your website.'

I think this is a great feature, becatuse it allows to create dynamic screensavers and the user will be motivated to use this screen-saver.

Is it possible to let a such created screensaver access to an encrypted contents, e.g. to pictures inside a password protected .zip-file? This would be great, e.g. to let friends show personal images, the provider of the screensaver does not want to be accessibe by everyone in the web.

If not, do you have plans to add something like this in an update for v5?

Gatis Avots Hello Michael,

=Is it possible to let a such created screensaver access to an encrypted contents, e.g. to pictures inside a password protected .zip-file?
Your screensaver learns about the updates by downloading an XML file containing the update information from your website.
Currently it is not possible to add access to encrypted contents using Screensaver Factory. Maybe you can control access using IP addresses from your web-server.

P.s.
Please note that the Auto-update feature is available only in Screensaver Factory Enterprise edition (today we are promoting Standard edition).

Kind regards,

Michael R. Hello again and thanks for the quick answer.

I'm not sure what you mean with 'Maybe you can control access using IP addresses from your web-server.';: The peope I would like to supply do - so I strongly suppose - ones who have no fixed IP-Adresses, i.e. the IP-address will change with every login into internet, because the provider usually have a certain amount/range of ip-addresses and if a customer tries to login, he/she gets the any of the free ones. Would it possible to use flash to provide such functionality? Or to access to them via password-secured ftp?

Do you plan to add such a embedded encryption in the future, e.g. via zip?

Do you have an example-project where I can see how to create such a screensaver with this auto-update-functionality.

Other than you said, when clicking on the BUY-Button I am able to choose the edition I want to buy (all three editions available today).

Thanks again...

Gatis Avots Hi Michael,

If you are using dynamic IP addresses, then the suggestion I gave, won't work.
I do not know if the feature you are asking for will be added in future. Please contact us through the support form, and the person in charge for development, will answer your questions:
http://www.blumentals.net...wizard.php

You can see examples of how to create the auto-update functionality inside the built-in help file of Screensaver Factory Enterprise.

And I apologize for misguiding you. Indeed, all Screensaver Factory editions are offered here today.

Gatis Avots Hello Tazzie,

I apologize for the late reply.

= I can't find anything that allows me to adjust the program GUI. The font sizes on the GUI are too small for me to comfortably work with, so trying to work with it squinting and/or using a magnifier makes it difficult to do for long.

I think the only way to make larger fonts in GUI, is using the standard tools MS provides, please contact us at our support email, if you do not know how to do this.

= Also, is there a way to make a screensaver that requires a password to switch to the desktop?
No, unless you use the standard feature provided by Microsoft that locks the computer after certain time of being idle (and the screensaver is started).

Kind regards,

a) Can i do this - add A MIXTURE OF images + flv files + video files (avi or wmv or etc.) - ALL AT A TIME INCLUDED to make 1 screensaver ?

Or can i only add 1 type of things only to make 1 Screensaver like images only ? or flvs only ?

b) Can i save the changes etc. or ALL THE EFFECTS that i add to making a screensaver, be saved as a template or any configuration file - so that i can just apply the same all changes and effects to some different set of images, videos next time some time later ?

G L Ready to buy. Appears to be standard version for sale.
Is the Pro/Enterprise also discounted?
Reading past comments, they were available at a discount.
More options for me using the Pro version.

G L Thanks Bill for the information. How do I get/link to the discount?
That is, if I go to their website, it does not show discounts but normal prices as far as I know.
Please advise or someone who knows.

Karlis Blumentals Randy, no this is not an update, this is an upgrade. We offer major upgrades at a small fee. Still BDJ price for a full new version is lower than the upgrade price, so this is a good deal.

Amit, yes, you can mix items. You should test how it works all together though, because the quality of the resulting screensaver heavily depends on your FLV and Video file quality. You can save any project as a template, just like you can save any word document and use it like a template for your future documents.

GL yes, all versions are available with a discount, just click Buy Now.

I have purchased it but am waiting to load it until I hear if I have a Sophie's Choice here. Thanks.

ouialaraison @ Lee Newsum:

I downloaded the trial version. You can chose Standard, Professional or Enterprise during installation. It is fully functional, there is only two lines in small font top left of the screensavers saying that is was created with Screensaver Factory and suggesting to register.

There is no limit regarding the durability of the trial version or the playing time of screensavers made with it. At least I didn’t spot any mention of it neither on Blumentals' website nor in the program itself.

Trial version shows watermarks on the produced screensavers.

Stefan:
No major new releases are planned for the next 12 months, if we are going to add something new, it will be added to version 6, so currently there are no plans for version 7.

Software Guy For a comparison of features for the different versions, go to the following page
http://www.blumentals.net...ry/buy.php
and scroll down until you see the link that says "Compare the difference between versions"- when you click that link a popup chart compares the versions.
Also worthwhile is to visit the Samples page here
http://www.blumentals.net...amples.php
and try downloading a few of the samples - they install as your own screensavers would, meaning as fully functional screensaver options from a small executable file (installs .scr files) and each shows features of the software.
The clock is a great little screensaver, the little running dog is fun, and the flowers shows close-ups of colorful flowers. The universe has beautiful and stunning photos, and they have 2 more of an Audi R8 and a BMW logo for the gearheads. Check out the samples as examples of what you might be able to do.

John H I have so much junk on my desktop, I never see the screen saver. Will this allow me to make a packaged slide show instead?

I just bought a 55 inch TV to use as a monitor for one of my computers and viewing pictures with it is a whole new experience. Having a nice slide show up and running changes the atmosphere of the whole house. (I have a very small cottage).

Thanks

John H I have been trying out the enterprise version during my coffee breaks here.

very nice.

I think what I really want is a Slideshow creator program so people do not need to worry about clicking an executable or Windows sucking the .SCR file into the operating system files. Though just clicking on an .SCR file acts as a slideshow. I myself would never click on an executable or .SCR file I receive in my email.

The program is missing 1080 X 1920 support. 1080 X 1920 seems to have become the standard monitor size these days and current computers can handle the larger file size needed for native resolution. Even my 9 year old Thinkpads easily handle that resolution.

Will look it over a bit more at quitting time.

The "Comparison Link" :

@Blumentals
What is the Current Version (ie. 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, ???) ???
How can I "Check for Updates" within the Software itself ???

@Christian User
WHERE on the menu is "deactivate" ??? I don't see it... perhaps the current version is an update from MY version.

Karlis Blumentals Next major version is not planned for the nearest year or so at least.

Comparison is available on our Buy page:
http://www.blumentals.net...ry/buy.php (there is a small link on the middle of the page)

Yes, you can Deactivate software on one computer to activate it on another. What is more, you have a few new installs every year allowed to offset for new computers and allow transition between computers.
