What are people saying about ScreenSteps Desktop Pro

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

After a lull, a nice Bits to comment on.

This does look like a nice niche app, one that could even help me with the green-screen documentation on the mini-computer stuff at work, or various PC teaching and support and research helps, as well as "professional" documentation, if one ever becomes a pro. I like that they have a SnagIt! interface capability built in. (I didn't check other capture programs, but the earlier version of SnagIt! 7 is findable for free and overall it is an ace screen capture program, in fact their text annotation would probably combine well with the ScreenSteps environment).

Looking forward to hearing from users. Most web discussion (Mac originally) is reasonably positive, one critique is the need for:

"greater control over layout and sizing and design"

e.g. looking at the demos, they end up with a lot of blank space on the left side, a quite dark bottom bar and fairly large fonts. (Browser full screen mode helps.) Customizing after the fact is not what you want, since you want to not lose the design when you change the Screensteps template. There may be some forum discussions, and the programmer's may want to comment. My cursory review may have missed some essentials.

Oh, the Medianotes demo seems to have a .pdf problem.

The web forums for support and discussion look good, an important indicator.

Overall, I nominate this one for Bits du Jour of the Week :-) .

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Greg DeVore Hi, I am one of the developers of ScreenSteps and just wanted to clarify a few things: - Steven: As far as your concern about the html layout - this is totally customizable BEFORE the fact. ScreenSteps has a templating system where with a little css and html knowledge you can design the html template however you would like. We have a few templates available for download here: http://screensteps.com/us...plates.php (click on the "See Example" links to see examples). But you can basically customize the html templates so that they exactly match your site, navigation and all. You might want to also check out ScreenSteps Docs ( http://screensteps.com/do...s_docs.php ) which is a free add on for ScreenSteps that lets you output full html manuals pretty quickly. The layout concern people have had is with the pdf files. There isn't much customization of those yet except for logo and footer text. As far as the MediaNotes pdf - the example documentation you are seeing there is on a beta version of a hosted service we are developing for ScreenSteps. Thanks for catching the bug. I updated it. It should be noted that ScreenSteps does not embed pdf files in the html like you see on the beta of our hosted service. Charles- The store seems to be working fine. You just need to click "Update Cart" at the bottom to see the discount applied. Let us know if that doesn't work for you.

Greg DeVore Another clarification. The license key you purchase here at Bits du Jour for ScreenSteps is valid for both the Mac and PC versions. If you want to download the Mac version just go to our website ( http://www.screentseps.com/downloads ) and download it there. The license key you get is a per user license so, as long as you are the only user, you can use the license key on both a Mac and PC.

Tom Colvin I'm very excited to discover this software. I'll certainly be playing with it today and will almost certainly buy it. I maintain a blog about resources and tools for writers to improve their productivity. This software will likely help me when I describe how to harness software for writing.

QUESTION: My blog is on WordPress. Will the file output by ScreenSteps be pastable directly into a WP post, or must I add some php code first?

No Name Greg-

Thanks for the clarification. Everything worked fine after I tried that.

Thanks again for the quick response.

Greg DeVore Tom-
Copying and pasting directly into WordPress will not work. The html will look fine (if you just copy the stuff between the body tags) but the your WordPress blog won't know where to find the images. By default, the html output of ScreenSteps will create an html file with the name of your lesson and a folder of images. The html file looks for images in that folder. If the two become separated then the html can't find the images.

You could customize a template to look for the images at another location where you could upload the image folders. But it would not be a one step process.

Basically, unless you really know what you are doing with WordPress, html, etc. ScreenSteps won't easily post lessons to your blog. But it will allow you to post html lessons to your website very easily.

Tom Colvin Thanks, Greg, for your feedback. Hmmmm...

I'll check with my webmaster to see if it's possible to set up a download facility via my blog. Then perhaps I can make the PDF's available to my readers.

Greg DeVore Tom- I run a Wordpress blog also and I am able to attach and upload pdf files (there is an option to upload files on the Write tab). So that might work for you. Here is a link to a lesson that shows how to do it: http://bmls.screenstepsli...essons/172

Joe Landau Are the HTML files that are prepared suitable for use in Windows HTMLHelp?
Dec 18 2007 at 8:09am Copy Link

Greg DeVore We have never exported to this format. But since ScreenSteps supports custom html/xml templates you may be able to design a template that works with Windows HTMLHelp. See this lesson if you want to know more about creating your own html/xml templates: http://bmls.screenstepsli...lesson/139

Since version 2 is from a few years ago, does this purchase include a free upgrade to version 3 when it comes out?
Oct 25 2010 at 1:24pm Copy Link
0
Greg DeVore As we haven't really even started work on version 3 yet this purchase probably won't include a free upgrade to version 3.  It will include all 2.x updates. 2.8.7 is due to be released during the first week of November which adds a bunch of features including better screen capture, blur tool, Zendesk posting and integration with our new ScreenSteps.me service. That will be a free upgrade to anyone who purchases through this offer. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Peter Margol I don't understand the pricing at all. It says "Deal Price: $39.97, List Price $79.95". On their website the price is $39.95 for the Standard version, and $79.95 for the Pro version. -- But the BitsDuJour offer does NOT say it's a Pro version.
Please explain. Thanks.

Greg DeVore Sorry for the confusion. The BitsDuJour price will be available on either Standard or Pro. Standard will be be $19.97 and Pro will be $39.97. On the day of the promotion you will be able to select which version you would like to purchase.

Peter Margol Thanks Greg, that's a good news. By the way, are there any improvements on the pdf since 2007? Back then you wrote (above): "The layout concern people have had is with the pdf files. There isn't much customization of those yet except for logo and footer text." For manuals, pdfs are probably the best option. Thanks.

Greg DeVore Peter- There have been some minor improvements to PDF layout but nothing significant. Since 2007 we have added MS Word and Pages output which really gives you complete control over the template. So if you really need to customize formatting you can export to Word and then to PDF.

OK, thanks; sounds feasible. My freeware PDFCreator (or alike) should take care of it without problems then I guess.

Stephane M Hello Greg,
The policy says no discounts for upgrades to future versions, is that correct?
Oct 29 2010 at 2:42pm Copy Link
0
Greg DeVore Stephanie -
No, that is wrong. Thanks for pointing it out. I will get the text updated. The licenses sold through bits will have the same upgrade policy as all other purchases. Basically, any 2.x upgrade is free (2.8.7 should be coming out soon with some great new additions). Whenever there is a major version bump (1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc.) that is a paid upgrade.

And no, we don't have a release date for a 3.0 version. We are still working on the 2.x line of things. There will be a 2.9 eventually that will have some further enhancements that will be free to all 2.x license owners.

Stephane M Thanks Greg for all the details, I was actually talking about upgrades to new major versions (2 to 3 for example), I understand those kind of upgrades will not be free but is there any discounts for registered users?

H. H. Hallo,
1. is ist intended, that the download link refers to the old screenstep 1.2.1 file
and not to the more feature rich 2.85?? - I think potential customers testing the software will more likely make their decision , when they test the version 2.85 than 1.2.1 - I only saw this by chance, because I was irritated - whilte testing - that screenshots of the tutorial did not match to my downloaded trial- version.

2. What is the advantage of the pro version apart from the ability to export to more file formats and mindtouch,..?
Does the desktop version only allow sequential pages and the pro version more a manual - csn you explain this a little bit more?

with kind regards
H.H.

Greg DeVore H. H. -

1. I apologize. Yes, the Demo download is pointing to the 1.2 version. This sales is for 2.8.5 which is the current version. Don't know how we missed that.

2. The only difference between Pro and Standard are export formats.

Here is a comparison page:
http://www.bluemangolearn...rison.html

When creating manuals you get a Table of Contents with links to individual lessons. When only creating lessons you just get a single file. You can see some examples here:

http://www.bluemangolearn.../examples/

Thanks,
Greg

H. H. Hallo,
thank you for fast responding, the links helped clarifying the above questions.
Nevertheless 2 more questions regarding the pro version:
1. is ist possible (or intended in the near future for version 2.xx) to have the possibility to create "sub-lessons " (meaning additional lessons underneath existing lessons- more level-depths)?

2. is ist possible (or intended in the near future for version 2.xx) to have the possibility not only to colour the fonts, but also the underlying background?

Thank you for responding again in advance
with kind regards
H.H.

Greg DeVore No problem H. H. -

1. No, sub lessons are not something that we are adding in the near future.
2. No, that is not a planned feature in the near term.

Let us know if you have any other questions.
