What are people saying about Smart Packer Pro

Petr This is interesting. Maybe would be useful for my app deployment. But, I need to know more. Your website and FAQ don't detail how this works. Can you please provide more technical info.

a. how does the virtual file system work? Is it in memory or on disk? what are the limitations?

b. how much extra overhead is required? (in terms of memory and cpu)

c. It seems you Packer Pro is more targeted for game apps, or is it a general purpose solution? What kind of apps have been deployed with this?

d. Do apps have full access to host system resources? (internet, disk, ...)

I have been using VMware for many years, so like virtualization, but it has its limitations. I need to understand the technical aspects of your product, otherwise I can't risk deploying my app to customers with unknown technologies. Thanks.

Michael Smart Packer Solutions Hi,

Thank you for your interest in our product.

a. The virtual file system runs in the internal memory of your machine. Therefore is only limited by the system resources.

b. There is not much overhead. Please check the trial version to see for yourself.

c. Smart Packer Pro can be used for packing all sort of Windows applications.

d. The packed exe's normally have access to host system resources. We also support compatibility level mode which supports apps which have special resource requirements. However we always advice to use the trial version to check if the product suits your needs.

Please let me know if you still have questions.

Kind regards,

Michael

Glenn Crouch I just purchased this deal - and I've tried several times with Copying / Pasting of details sent from Advantage, and I keep getting "Invalid License"... :(

Using Windows 8 / 64-bit for my Workstation, Internet Connection is fine.

I have been developing Software for 30+ Years and selling Shareware / Commercial Software for 15+ years - and so do know most of the "gotchas" - but I can't see what is the problem here - I have also tried without the "Company" info - please advise...

Jerry Ruggiero I just tried to pack up all of an application's files, but the executable produces errors of missing files when launched. Are there additional options to validate the included files to ensure that nothing is missing in the exe file?

Michael Smart Packer Solutions Dear Jerry,

All files and subfolders which are in the same folder of the main executable will be compressed and extracted in the virtual file system during run-time.

Please send via our site a screenshot(s) of the error and the project file so we can investigate it.

Kind regards,

Michael

Hawkeye I have used WinRAR for years to achieve basically the same results, as what is stated as features, for a lot less in price at $29.00, plus it creates and reads other archive types. Lifetime upgrades are also included, regardless of major versions.

WinRAR, does the following,

Can create a protected EXE file, with virtual paths, and the files can be extracted based on the virtual paths or any other location. Nero, also used WinRAR as a frontend on previous versions. WinRAR let's you include a script file to run after the files are extracted.

With WinRAR, you would have to use the temp files and a script, based on what versions of Windows is installed, if you wanted the extracted files to be placed in the proper folders, Documents and Settings, vs Users.

Can the files be extracted properly, based on what version of Windows is installed or would a script be needed to specify that as well? I would like to eliminate temp files completely, if possible. Is this really possible with what versions of Windows is installed.

I beleive you need to do a comparision with WinRAR as WinRAR is a very popular application and has been for years.

Thanks,

Michael Smart Packer Solutions Hi,

Smart Packer Pro and WinRAR are totally different tools and can't really be compared.

With Smart Packer Pro you can pack an application so it can run in a virtual file system (in memory). Files like DLL's, images etc. are also loaded into the virtual file system and therefore accessible.

Other features are high compression and encryption level, icon support, optional password protection, commandline parameters, plugin support, customizable storage locations and integrated download module.

Kind regards,

Smart Packer Solutions

Hawkeye Reread your description, above, It says you can build a single EXE, include a virtual file system, with password protection and commandline support. All these, plus more are in WinRAR.

The description fails to mention about running the EXE with these capabilities in memory, where WinRAR is creating a self executing archive file.

Also, with the description and having packer in it's name, it sounded like another archive utility.

I will check it out and see what it can do.

Thanks,

DH007 How does this program compare to entirely FREE Enigma Virtual Box. I have not seen on reverse engineering web pages any thread related to your program although there were many crackmes on the more advanced related version of the former called Enigma Protector. How sure can you then be concerning the security of your product in real life. I mean real security, not just security through obscurity?

Michael Smart Packer Solutions Hi,

@Mike B.
No this functionality is not included in Smart Packer Pro.

@DH007
Besides similar functionality we have several additions like plug-in systeem, download system, customizable splash image and icon. Smart Packer Pro is secure via code obfuscation and encryption.

Please note that in theory every software product can be compromised so there is no 100% guarantee.

Hope this answers your questions.

CodeDog I've owned Smart Packer Pro since 2010, originally bought it for video game distribution.

There are similar programs out there, such as Enigma, but I like SPP because it simply does what it's supposed to do, and does it well.

There is no system that can't be hacked, but SPP gives me as much (and in most cases more) protection for my assets as any other system on the market, and I can't ask for more than that. And when I consider that the goal is to protect all the time, work, and effort I've put into creating those assets, why would I not want to spend a little money rather than looking for a freebie application.

In my opinion, if you've spent the time to create something worth protecting, it should be worth spending a little money to protect it. And I haven't found anything in the price range better than SPP...

Sam Hi Michael,

Are games created with Unity game engine supported by Smart Packer Pro?

Thanks,
Sam
Jan 22 2014 at 4:15am Copy Link

CodeDog @Sam,

Yes, Unity developed games will work with SPP. As well as Torque, Dark Basic Pro, PureBasic, and most other game engines/systems out there.

They also have a product called "V-Packer" which is specifically for games, but SPP will work fine.

It won't work with something like HTML5 based games, though, such as created with Construct 2...

Sam @ CodeDog and Michael,

Thanks for your replies, I tested the trial version and it does indeed work well with Unity games. Are the options for compression and encryption grayed out because it is a trial version? Also the password field seem to display the input text, is it possible to change that behavior?

Thanks again for your quick response.

Petr Please help me to understand your SPP. Is it like a packaging system that has a runtime Virtual Machine environment?

.. can my app access other apps on the Windows machine? (drag-n-drop, clipboard copy-and-paste...?

.. can the SPP packaged app write to the local hard drive and have access to Windows installed services such as .NET Framework, Internet, default mail program...?

.. what aspects of your SPP can go out of date? (.NET Framework or other Windows OS services...?) Is there a way to update a packaged app?

I like the concept, but want to know more before purchase.
Jan 22 2014 at 6:47pm Copy Link
0
Michael Smart Packer Solutions Hi,

@Sam
That is correct. Options for compression and encryption are grayed out.
Currently it is not possible to change the password input behaviour. We will add this request on our road map.

@Petr
Smart Packer Pro is a application virtualization packaging system. The application (and files) runs in their own virtual file system.

Drag-n-drop, clipboard copy-and-paste is normally supported. Please try the trail version to be sure.

.NET framework is not required for packaging and run-time so will not have any influence. Normally only when a new Windows version is released it can happen that it must be updated.

Yes it is possible to update a packed app (for example via download functionality).

Michael

Tim Parsons Can this virtualise an application that won't run under later Windows than XP so that it can? (Specifically so that the 16-bit netbios stack that XP has but later Windows versions don't can be included or emulated?)
Jan 23 2014 at 2:24am Copy Link
0
Michael Smart Packer Solutions @Tim
The packed executable doesn't emulate the operating system but uses a virtual file system. It really depends how (and which) OS calls are handled by the application.

Normally if you use standard OS calls it should be ok.

Hope this answers your question.

Michael

Hawkeye So far, I like what I see. I have a few questions.

1. After registering, will the Copyright under details, show the Publisher's name that is entered in the Options 2 screen, under Version Information?

2. Is there a way to open a project file, other than, double clicking on the spproj file, in case twp projects were updated under one session?

3. Not sure, if I would need it, but can you add more than one DLL file to a project? In this case, I am thinking of the start procedure for the second DLL, since all the files in the source folders are included.

4 .Concerning the downloads section. Personally, I would like only check per day, not on every startup. If a script downloaded the file, could it be saved in the same location as using the download section, and saving in the root of the virtual file system?

I apologize for all the questions, I don't have the time to run this though all the testing, I would like, before this promotion expires.

Thanks,

Michael Smart Packer Solutions @Hawkeye
1. The version info of the packed executable is updated with these values.

2. I don't understand the question. Could you please explain what you mean with updated under one session?

3. Sure. A DLL can also be used as source executable. Also via the plug-in system a DLL can be handled.

4. When using download functionality the file is stored in the main folder of the virtual file system. Of course you could use an own plug-in for similar functionality.

However we will add checking once a day when download and storing the file in configurable folder (virtual file system) on our roadmap.

Michael

Hawkeye @Michael,

2. If I wanted to update, say two projects, a.exe and b.exe, I could click on the project file for a.exe but, I was wondering if I can load the project file for b.exe, without clicking on it's project file or exiting SPP?

3. Actually, I was wondering, if two DLL's were included, with an EXE, is there a way to have a separate procedure for both, if needed?

Thanks,

Thank you for your response. One final question regarding the build. Is it possible to echo the file version as the product version. For example if I input my product version as 12.1.3, is it possible for the file version to reflect this too. This is very important since the file version is what is echoed when someone hovers over the file in windows explorer. From what I see now the files version seems to be 1.9.4.1 which I guess is the current version of Smart Packer Pro. This will really confuse a client and thus it is of primary importance and should be addressed quickly.

Thanks,
Sam

Michael R. Do I understand it right

1) a created EXE-file could be copied to an USB-stick and running it on another machine, wouln't change the state of the harddisk of this machine. Nevertheless if a certain .DLL would be needed, let's say normally located inside c:\windows\system, instead of using a .DLL with the very same name in this directory, the packed EXE-file would be used. Is there an option in SmartPacker, which could restrict the writing/modifying, e.g. (1) not writing at all (2) only inside the sandbox (=EXE-file itself), (3) only to the device, where the exe-file is located (4) no restriction at all? Is (2) possible at all, since this would alter the exe-file...?

2) Is this a realistic usage: A new user wants to have my software. I will get his unique computer-hardware-id. I'll modify my code, so that the exe-file will only work on his system. Because of SmartPacker's obfuscating/encryption functions I don't have to make this very complicated, just a test like 'if(CompareComputerId(0xab35..14)==false) Error("Not allowed on this computer);' would be sufficent, so the average-hacker wouldn't be able to change this code quite easily to 'if(false) Error("Not allowed on this computer);'. Than I let generate SmartPacker a new exe-file, so the actual personalized computer-id is automatically build in) and give this .EXE-file to the user.

3) Is the virtualized file-system completely in the RAM and if not - which might make sense - can I define (in the SmartPacker-Options, where it should be temporarily stored)?

4) Is it possible, to access from within my exe-file to some SmartPacker-vars, e.g. the user-name, password, ...? So it would not be necessary like in the case above, to change the exe-file itself. Just creating the personalized .spproj-files and having a general access to these data would be sufficent.

Thank you...

We will investigate the possibility.

@Stefan Hauber
V2 is a paid upgrade however it is probably not released within 6 months.
Minor upgrades are free.

@Michael R.
1. This depends of the application.
2. That is possible.
3. The virtual file system runs completely in memory.
4. No but the possibility is under investigation.
