Code snippets definitely make a developer's life easier, but not if you don't have a way to neatly organize and retrieve them when you need to! Today's discount software promotion is designed to make code snippet management easy, delivering notable gains in efficiency and productivity. It's called Snipbox.

Snipbox is an effective code manager that lets you add, edit, insert, delete, and manipulate code snippets with just a few clicks. You don't even have to have a specific snippet in mind, thanks to Snipbox's ability to search your snippets using name, tags, or both. An invisible dock lets you quickly add code snippets to your library just by dragging text to it, while a snippets tree lets you drag any snippet out of Snipbox into an open IDE of your choice. You can even use Snipbox to import snippets from different IDE formats, or export them to a specific IDE.

Need to share your code snippets? You can use Snipbox to upload snippets to remote FTP locations, or share your library over a network, or even use Dropbox for the ultimate in cloud-based sync. And with additional features that include syntax highlighting, you'll wonder how you ever got along without Snipbox!

Neil I just tried this...lost my first snippet because I didn't realize you need to Save each time. I think it should work more like most databases...e.g., creating a new snippet or moving to a different snippet should automatically save.

And then as I moved to the second and third snippets, e.g., if you are loading a bunch of different snippets, you have to reselect the language each time. That should stay put to allow easier bulk entry. Speaking of which, I wanted to load a bunch of MySQL queries in there, from a SQL script dump of a database, and that's not something it imports or parses either. (I wasn't "really" expecting that it would, but it would have been nice.)

Has potential, but it left me searching for alternatives. which is what I'm doing now.

Luay Kanaan @Neil: Thank you for your interest. Regarding your first point, we are already considering adding such a behaviour for such scenarios that precludes web services integration.
As for your second point, we appreciate the suggestion and can confirm it will be included in the next update.
As for the third point, I am sorry; such import scenarios are not supported yet.
Finally, thank you for believing that Snipbox has potential. We always work hard on improving Snipbox for our users.

Ian Gillies Very Cool little tool!

I'm going to download it today and will likely buy it.. I have one concern.. does it support SFTP??

Will you add SFTP as a patch perhaps?? (Nowadays SFTP is a must)

Thanks in advance.. great pricing.. cool tool.. another fantastic little piece of software bitsdujour exposed me to.

The idea of this site is to get products into people's hands via cut rate prices... and these PAYING customers will become loyal customers going forward .. providing the SW makers keep updating and upgrading their products.

I have bought many titles here and intend to keep buying several.from the company when they put out new versions/upgrades etc.

I'm sharing this so SW makers thinking about using bits realize that the idea is to put SW into as many hands as they can via bits.. so they can turn these initial buyers into loyal customers.

Cheers people!

marlu @Ian Thank you for your interest, kind words and support. I can confirm that SFTP support is already planned for an update. we are already researching libraries that support both so we don't have to drop FTP/FTPS.

William Tattors Most compelling lil bugger of a tool, will be putting through it's paces today... I am displeased with my other built in options.... and the apparent responsiveness of this company to push the envelope forward is encouraging.....

PASSED! tossing in the tool box!

uh ho...enter registration key, restart, crash! details forthcoming..

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Doesn't this work with all editors? I just tried to drag a snippet I created into NuSphere PhpED, but I wasn't able to...

marlu ALERT: please note that we are having an issue with our license server (excellent timing, right!!). The server is issuing license keys that cause Snipbox to crash (the irony!). Anyway, we have implemented a workaround. You will have to download an emergency updated version of Snipbox (2.5.6). Install the new version and all should be OK. The updated version will be available in 20 minutes. I'll keep you all updated.

UPDATE: The emergency update is live now. Please download it directly from the download page at our website. Then install it. All should be OK now. (fingers crossed!)

marlu @William: I am glad it is working. We did notice the 'license to' field issue and will resolve it soon. we thought we had to address the big issue first then work on the minor 'license to' field issue.

marlu @Jan-Christop: Sorry for the delay in responding. Inserting should work with any IDE. I will download the IDE you are using and get back to you. I just want to mention a small thing. try clicking on the snippet (as if to select it) and then drag it to the open IDE. would that work?

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @marlu: No problem, the license problem was more important.

No, that doesn't work either. I can drag snippets to MS Word and to EditPad Pro, but not to PhpED. I first thought I had erroneously configured it to run with administrator rights (then it wouldn't accept input from programs without admin rights), but this isn't the case.

By the way, it would be nice to see the import and export features for PhpED, too... ;-)

Neil Thought I'd play with it a little more today...to decide whether to invest.

1) Added some tags, but didn't save after each. No warning, and I just lost them. Sure, I'm stupid not to remember I had to save each time, but it just shouldn't be necessary. And you shouldn't be able to lose data so easily.

2) When I did save after each move, it has the annoying habit of confirming, and making me dismiss the confirmation. Try an app like Word. When you press Save, does it confirm? Neither should this app.

3) Every time I start it it (at least hitting Snippets Explorer from the icon) comes up maximized on the main screen, even though I was using it in a normal window (and on another screen). It should remember where you last had it.

4) I tried dragging a snipped to WingIDE Pro (Python development IDE) Doesn't work.

5) I tried insert a snippet (tree). It didn't work with either WingIDE or even Notepad which I tried just to see it do something.

6) FYI It took me a while to figure out that the labels under the settings editable fields were labels and not buttons to more settings. Unusual layout. Certainly need more "preferences" which could handle some of the above.

Hopefully, when you get that all worked out, you'll have another discount offer, and I'll try it again.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Another annoying thing: When you give an existing snippet a new name and save it, a duplicate is created. That's not what you'd expect...

marlu @Jan-Christop: You are right. I just tried PhpED and it doesn't allow drag&drop from external resources. Not only from Snipbox but from any other third-party app (I tried dragging text from notepad and visual studio to phpEd and it didn't work). I read through their manual and I think they have disabled this on purpose for external apps to help with their own drag&drop functionalities. I will send them an email to ask about this issue. Once they respond, I'll send you an email with their response.
As for the other issue, (save existing snippet) that behaviour is there on purpose. It was put to address scenarios were a user might want the same code available for different languages or snippet names. We thought that doing the extra step of deleting the old snippet is a small price to pay for having such behaviour. I am sorry you find it annoying. We will consider a different approach for a future update.
Finally, I am sorry I won't be able to get back to you regarding import and export from/to phpEd today. This point needs a little bit more research. I will email you regarding this issue as soon as I'm done researching it. (Which reminds me, I will require your email address).

marlu @Neil: Thank you for your interest. As for your points:
Point 1. we addressed this yesterday
Point 2. This is in accordance with MS UI experience but we could change that to a message in the status bar if the user has web services disabled.
Point 3. Thank you for the suggestion.
Points 4&5. Thank you for reporting this bug.
Point 6. If you are referring to the ribbon bar, this is a standard MS ribbon bar. So it behaves and looks the same way MS designed it.
We hope in the future Snipbox will be to your liking.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @marlu: Thank you very much for your interest in the PhpED issue. Since I'm searching for a snippet tool that I'll be using almost entirely with PhpED, I'll wait for your reply and for your next discount offer (hopefully). Nevertheless I think Snipbox has potential.

I'll send you a mail when I'm back (I'm off for two days now), so you can tell me more about the PhpED issue.

umike @Jan-Christop: Some editors do not have the feature to drag and drop text into them. I am also experiencing the same drag and drop problem with CodeLobster. I also tried other snippet tool with my editor and I still get the same error. I email CodeLobster and they say they will include the feature in the future version.
=== SOLUTION ===
I work around this by using ClipCache, a clipboard software. Instead of drag and drop, I highlight the clip and do "Quick Paste". The Quick Paste (shortcut is SHIFT+ENTER) will copy the clip and paste to the previous window (the editor window is active before I select the clipcache window).

marlu @umike: we reached the same conclusion as you did. However, we have a better solution that we will add to the next update (in a few days) that doesn't require a third party tool. In the next update, when you drag a snippet to an IDE, if the drag fails just right click and paste to the IDE. Because Snipbox will explicitly copy the snippet code to the clipbard when you start dragging so that if the drag fails you just paste the code without having to open the explorer, select the code, copy the code and then paste it. Just trying to make your life a little bit easier.

umike @marlu: I have tried your software and find a few features I love :
- able to sync with snipplr.com
- preview and search the code.
A suggestion for your next version is to allow folders to be included under each programming language eg I can have sub folders under PHP to group my snippets according to their usage.
Besides praying for Codelobster to have the drag and drop feature include in next version, I can also look forward to your new version. Thanks. Fast response.

Rick Truell "Snipbox will explicitly copy the snippet code to the clipbard when you start dragging so that if the drag fails you just ..."

As a programmer myself, I must say that while this is a neat work-around for the problem (one that I might not have thought of myself), I suggest that this is the wrong way to go about it. You should only copy the snippet to the clipboard *if the drag fails*. Otherwise, you are putting something on the clipboard unnecessarily and thus pushing something *off* the clipboard unnecessarily...something the user might still want/need there.

Aaron H. I just downloaded the trial version of this program, and quickly purchased the full version. I am very impressed with this software so far. However, there are a couple of changes I'd like to see implemented. The biggest frustration I've had so far was as I was typing an in-depth description of a bit of code, I accidentally clicked on a pre-existing snippet with my touch-pad mouse. It initially deleted all of the progress I had made with the description and caused me to lose a couple of minutes worth of work. I think that all of the information you type should be completely retrievable even if you were to click another snippet. This would also make it easier to reference other coding parts whilst making a new entry. Thank you for your awesome program, and your time.

marlu @Aaron: Thank you so much for your support and purchase. When you click on a pre-existing snippet Snipbox assumes that you want to view this snippet. So it clears the explorer fields and displays the 'clicked' snippet. I must admit that i can't, off the top of my head, think of a quick 'fix' for your scenario. But i'll give it some thought and report back.

marlu @Aaron: I just read an email from @Ian suggesting a built-in clipboard control for Snipbox. With proper implementation this could help address your scenario. We'll have to research this much more.

And by the way @Ian: If you're reading this, thank you for your kind email and suggestions.

Ian Gillies I wish all software companies worked this way.. customers start throwing feedback to them and they fire back fixes.

I bought the sw around midnight.. and the reg key issue of course crashed it.. I sent in an email to advise them of the issue... I carried on coding into the wee hours of the morning (most here understand).. I finally went to sleep went to bed.. and woke a few hours later up to a fix in my email.

I was copying and pasting the code bits to begin with.. but I appreciate people giving the company the feedback it needs to make the product better.

Its $12 SW people.. clearly these guys are a motivated capable group who intend to deck out this product.
