What are people saying about SoftColor Server

Tomas Barth I downloaded the trial and made all applicable settings. My problem is that it doesn´t start processing so I can´t get any result.
Server is running and Workflow is set to ON. What am I doing wrong? I want to see the results before purchasing. Thank you.

Petri Piirainen Tomas,

Can you test Server with workflow where input folder is c:\demo\input\ and output c:\demo\output\ ?

SoftColor Server is running as Windows service on the background. This means that it is running with SYSTEM user. This means that by default SoftColor Server doesn't have access to network drives (or for example Vmware shared folders) because those are mounted after login with current user account.

SoftColor Oy - Jul 28 2012 at 5:39am Copy Link

Tomas Barth Unfortunately it didn´t help. Maybe the software is for people with miore technical knowledge than I have, but there ought to be some kind of START-button to get the process going.

Petri Piirainen Tomas,

Here is a video tutorial for SoftColor Automata (workstation version of SoftColo Server)

http://www.youtube.com/wa...z2IW3zctnE

Processing is same with SoftColor Server too.

Automata is also available here:
http://www.bitsdujour.com...-automata/

Tomas Barth I guess I must have misunderstood what the server version is meant for, because it´s the same as Softcolor Automata, but the latter worked with the same settings as the server version.
I use it on workstations, but the pricing with workstation version more expensive than server version isn´t that attractive.
Thank you for your efforts.

Sukru Boztepe I do not know if I am doing something wrong, but the software is not doing a adequate job in auto white balance and exposure adjustments. Also crop needs some positioning preference setting. At the moment I believe it only crops from center. The idea of the software is very good though.

Petri Piirainen Sukru, Did you test color correction intensity level adjustment?

Amit Intresting discount - however - can anyone shed light on what makes this software costing worth $900 - what's really the distinction of it, to cost so much ?

Dec 11 2012 at 10:48pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen This is multi user server version of our Automata software (http://www.bitsdujour.com...-automata/). Desktop version Automata license price is 99$ and then this Server edition price is 899$.

SoftColor Oy - Dec 12 2012 at 12:21am Copy Link

Bram Haver So... can this version be used on a single PC or is it necessary to purchase a different (non-discounted) version? Also when they that "layer-based" are these layers compatible with Photoshop layers?

Dec 12 2012 at 12:40pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Bram,

Yes you can use SoftColor Server on a single PC just like desktop version Automata.

If you select PSD for ouput format, procesed PSD file has two layers original image and processed image. These layers are normal Photoshop layers, you can change for eample opacity on the Photoshop.

SoftColor Oy - Dec 12 2012 at 12:59pm Copy Link

Bram Haver THANKS! for your quick reply. I'm going to try the trial version and see what I think. But count me as a happy member of Bits, regardless.

Mark Hill With such a high list price am concerned what the upgrade cost will be for a major release. Could you please advise us what the cost will be.

Dec 13 2012 at 7:02am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Mark,

1.x updates are free and also SoftColor Server 2.0 update will be free for 1.x customers. After that it is -50% to get latest version for SoftColor Server users.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Apart from the server features - is there anything that Server Automata can do to my photos that Automata can't? Means: Are there any additional features for use on a single workstation? I couldn't find a feature comparison on your website...

Dec 13 2012 at 8:49am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Jan-Christoph,

For desktop use Automata and Server have same features (workflows, image enhancement & editing, color management).

SoftColor has server features and log file system which Automata doesn't have.

SoftColor Oy - Dec 13 2012 at 9:26am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen We have just released update for SoftColor Server and SoftColor Automata (v.1.3). This update provides one time saving workflow tool for both applications. Now SoftColor Server and Automata can process subfolders inside workflow's input folder. This means that all subfolders and subfolder structure will be copied to workflows ouput folder when image files are processed. Now you can just drag & drop folder or folders to workflows's input folder and images will be processed and folder strucure copied to output folder.

carl thorpe I keep seeing on your site that the program can handle many native RAW formats, but I can't find a list of which ones.

Can you verify that this can handle Nikon and Canon RAW formats?

Thanks!

Carl Thorpe

Petri Piirainen Our applications us DCRAW as raw conversion engine. Nikon and Canon RAW formats are supported. Also all our applications have fully working free trials so you can test raw support with trial version.

lemonade soda I think a bit more can be expected from $899 software (never mind today's discount). It looks like nothing more than your toolbox utility, with a GUI and folder watch service. I don't understand how you think GUI and folder watch add another $500 of value. IMO, this is a $20 add on to toolbox.

Further, while the software is interesting it misses three important points (for me at least):

1./ I want an "all in one" solution that will handle both camera photos as well as scanner or camera copies of documents. I don't want to buy two separate server utilities one for photos, and one for scans, and with a resulting complex software setup and workflow. So I would suggest adding an optimisation designed for improving copied documents, so that contrast is improved, page/background to white, and image is deskewed/aligned. This should be automatic. (Server can tell jpg is a document and therefore apply document contrast and deskew settings).

2./ The software should be capable of reading PDF files, optimising the embedded JBIG or JPEG, then writing back out the fixed PDF.

3./ A text based log file is dull. In addition there should be an output to an automatically generated HTTP link gallery so that the user can easily browse the output material.

Implement these features and you've got another customer! :)

carl thorpe I downloaded the trial and installed on Windows 7 Professional, 64bit.

Unfortunately, I have yet to be able to get this program to do anything at all (other than throw Access Violations).

I set up a workflow to do color correction.

Save it.

Turn it on.

And then copy/move images into the Input folder and nothing happens.

Then, if I try to edit the workflow, it will not open up again.

However, for every single time I click on "Edit," I get an Access Violation when I attempt to close the Workflow Management screen. Seriously, click Edit 7 times, and I get exactly 7 Access Violations.

This happens every single time, and as I said I have yet to get it to actually do anything.

Dec 13 2012 at 4:24pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Carl,

Can you test with Desktop version Automata
http://www.softcolor.fi/a.../download/

Does Automata work?

In Windows 7 SoftColor Server requires Administrator rights, when you start SoftColor Server there should be Access Control dialog which as permission.

SoftColor Oy - Dec 13 2012 at 4:30pm Copy Link

carl thorpe Desktop version works perfectly fine.

Does the processing.

Allows me to edit workflows.

----

Server version still a no-go...

There is an UAC prompt when starting the workflow management screen.

I also checked and the ServerAutomatoService is running as a system process.

I set up an identical workflow.

Input is d:\input\
Output is d:\output\
(d:\ is a local drive)

I just set Automatic Color Correction with default settings for this test.

Output format: I've tried JPEG, TIFF, and PSD.

Save & Exit

Click the switch to turn it on.

Nothing happens.

Dec 13 2012 at 4:40pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Carl,

Can you test Server workflow with other locations. Because Server runs as system user there might be some permission issues.

SoftColor Oy - Dec 13 2012 at 4:48pm Copy Link

carl thorpe I finally got the program working. Details of what all went on are below the **** for the dev and anyone who is experiencing similar issues.

I have 5 different sources of images that come into my pc on a regular basis. DSLR, high-end point and shoot, entry-level point and shoot, and two different phones.

I tend to run the same 3 or 4 fixes on all of the images that come in except for the DSLR images.

However, each image source gets different fixes to different degrees.

My plan is to start pulling images into folders named for the source. Then have this program watching those folders and automating fixes based on the source.

My only concern at this point is that getting the server edition locks us in to having to pay $450 whenever the program is upgraded to the next full version. Will we have an opportunity to switch to the desktop version at 50% off when the time for a paid update comes along if we find that we can live without the additional server features?

*****

Multiple test locations, no go.

Decided to uninstall and reinstall.

Had an issue with two files in the program's directory: softcolorAutomataHelper.exe and dcrawlib.dll,

Neither file could be deleted.

I checked task manager and ensured that I nothing was using those files, and I still couldn't delete it. I even went through and killed almost all of the applications and processes running and still couldn't get rid of them.

I rebooted, and could delete the problem files.

I then rebooted again and reinstalled the server program.

And everything is working.

My workflows run, and I can edit them without the Access Violation errors.

Danny Is in this of products by SoftColor SoftColor Server such as Toolbox and PhotoEQ incorporated?

May 30 2013 at 12:11am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Yes SoftColor Server is automatic server image editing / enhancement workflow application with graphical user interface.

SoftColor Oy - May 30 2013 at 12:36am Copy Link

Danny Given the super big discount can I assume that very soon a new (upgrade) version to come? :-)

May 30 2013 at 7:23am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen New / upgrade version is coming during summer and it will be free update for all 1.x customers! ;)

SoftColor Oy - May 30 2013 at 7:41am Copy Link

Danny @Petri Piirainen,

That is beautiful! And what is an upgrade price after 12 months?

May 30 2013 at 7:45am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen After 12 months (or like 1.x -- 3.x in the future) will be -50%

SoftColor Oy - May 30 2013 at 7:52am Copy Link

Danny This is a tempting offer. But I am not a webmaster, most functions can I it. SoftColor Automata and/or Toolbox is something more for me. So I'm waiting for the next SoftColor Automata/Toolbox BDJ Deal!

May 30 2013 at 8:22am Copy Link

Dave Doiron Maybe I'm caught up on semantics, but it says this is server-side software. Does this mean that the "engine" resides on your server and what we are buying is essentially the gateway to that server?

May 30 2013 at 12:28pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Dave, All our applications Automata, Server, PhotoEQ and Toolbox uses same engine and them have same color correction, image editing and color correction features.

SoftColor Server is a standalone application you can is it on the server hardware or just it use it on desktop pc. Server-side means that SoftColor server is running as windows service and doesn't need any user to login to system.

Rick F I'm wondering why my BitDefender keeps flagging the SoftColor Server website as unsafe. Anyone have any ideas or are experiencing the same with any other web page security software?

Oct 12 2013 at 8:22am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Hi Rick F,

BitDefender has made a false positive analysis of our website.

I just posted information to BitDefender staff to check and website and mark it as safe website.

There is quite many positive false alerts with BitDefender

dojistar Software worked better than expected. Downloaded the trail version before buying. Needed something to get an acceptable white balance, facial colors and run unsharp mask on many selected photos quickly. Does much more. Highly recommended.

Oct 13 2013 at 7:31pm Copy Link

Petri Piirainen We has just released an update to SoftColor Server and SoftColor Automata!

http://softcolor.tumblr.c...-available

Now SoftColor Server and Automata support prefix and suffix for file naming to processed files.

wts A matrix comparing and contrasting the features of all your products would be helpful. Thanks.

Apr 3 2014 at 9:00am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Automatic photo editing, enhancement and color management features are same in all our applications, we have same engine inside applications http://www.softcolor.fi/a...hancement/

Main differences between applications are workflow automation and server side features (SoftColor Server is multiuser server application)

SoftColor Oy - Apr 3 2014 at 9:09am Copy Link

Kick65 Does this do anything more or better than GIMP and Photoshop other than being server side?

Apr 4 2014 at 4:37am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Yes it does :) The best part of SoftColor Server is our own automatic photo enhancement technology. Automatic correction for white balance, exposure and contrast works much better than other automatic color corrections. You can read review SoftColor correction vs Lightroom here: http://dpnow.com/7889.html (In this article they have tested our PhotoEQ but SoftColor Server has same engine).

Chris Dennis Is it possible to use this as part of a Photoshop workflow? For example can it be launched from a PS action or script and the processed images passed back to Photoshop?
A Photoshop plugin version might be useful :)

Apr 4 2014 at 6:52am Copy Link

Petri Piirainen Chris Dennis, It is possible to use Photoshop as part of SoftColor Server workflow. This needs a vb script which use OLE automation to control Photoshop. (set appObj = CreateObject( "Photoshop.Application" ) etc..). This script can be "Pre Processing Command" or "Post Processing Command" tool inside SoftColor Server workflow.

SoftColor Server (and other SoftColor applications) can save processed and original images as separate layers to same PSD file.
