What are people saying about Softdiv PDF Split and Merge

Michael R. So, if I have let's say 7 pages, can 1 create 3 pages a single PDF out of them: the first output-page has 4 input-pages on it, the second 2 and the third 1 (i,e, the size of the first four is 1/4 of the original size, the two next pages is 1/2 of the original size and the last is 1:1)?

Rick NG Hi Michael,

Thank you for your message. The program supports 4 types of splitting modes

i) Split into single-page PDF file
ii) Delete unwanted pages
iii) Delete unwanted page ranges
iv) Split by group of pages

So, let say if you have 7 pages PDF file and you would like the first PDF to contain 4 pages, second PDF to contain 2 pages and last PDF to contain 1 page. You can set the removal page ranges as:

i) 5 to 7 (first PDF file)
ii 1 to 4, 7-7 (second PDF file)
iii) 1-6 (third PDF file)

Sara User Eagerly awaiting this!

Speaking frankly, all these paid special programs are in that same price range which always seemed a bit steep to me for just the intended use, splitting or merging pdf's (some even cutting their original product further down, into "Split" AND "Merge", selling them separately, as if you never had the need for the other function, too, whilst using one function most of the time indeed - for me that's merging (ie creation of own pdf's), rarely deleting (ie getting page(s) out of others' pdf's), your mileage may vary), so I've used various free programs, all of them with limitations; for some you even need to do merging in multiple steps, each time just being able to add just up to 5 new pages, and just at the end of the target pdf of course.

So I'm looking out to replace my current free program with this paid one, for free! ;-)

(People who complain that these tools don't do "more" than they do obviously haven't grasped the fact that they do it in a MUCH easier way than your usual "pdf editor" you will probably own, too, so this "redundancy" is very welcome if the price is right, let's say up to 15 bucks plus VAT for such a tool, but that's just me.)

Thus, thank you for offering it free here and now (well, soon)!

Loyal Customer Good old Avast is not allowing the file to run. It pops up a warning window saying this file might be dangerous and that it is being sent to Avast Labs for further analysis.

I know I could temporarily disable Avast and install the program, but that would defeat the purpose of having Avast guarding the machine.

Perhaps the vendor should should clear this security issue with Avast.

Bottom line: I have come to trust Avast over the past 10 years or so, and it has so far kept my computer virus-free. So if Avast doesn't allow it to run, I'd rather not circumvent Avast and install this program.

Allan Winston I am hitting a problem in downloading in both the Firefox and Edge browsers.
I get the message "Couldn't download - virus detected".
I clicked and chose Download Anyway but the file is not present in my download folder.
I checked Windows Security and found the download was blocked due to "Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml"
How would you recommend that I proceed?

Allan Winston I was able to download another file, pdfsplitmerge.exe, from https://netdna.softdivsha...tmerge.exe
It passed Windows Security. I installed it successfully.
However, it never asked for a password.

Using the Split capability to cut out roughly half of the pages at the front, each page has "DEMO VERSION" plastered in red on each page. That would not be unexpected for a demo version. However, the original file was 18 MB and the split file has ballooned to 40 MB when 9 MB would be expected. I have determined that this is due to each page being turned into a picture. This is unacceptable because I want the ability to search for text, which is now gone. Does the registered version also take pictures of each page?

Rick NG Hi All,

I could not replicate the problem on my end. It appears to be a false positive. If you are affected, please reach out to us at softdivsoftdivshareware.com, and we will provide you with an alternative download link.

bob trout I still get the download blocked as malware, so where do I download it from? Do I have to email someone? Why can't the download link be fixed so everyone, or a lot of us, don't have to email for it. Then again, maybe the software isn't worth it?

Adam Bryan @Rick NG: This doesn't inspire confidence when you acknowledge it's a false positive and propose the solution to be an alternate download link.

Firstly, an alternate link will surely result in same file being downloaded which will in turn set off any anti-malware that flagged it previously. If a different file is being downloaded (which that in itself seems suspicious) then why are not changing the link here.

Secondly, you should be advising those that have received a malware detection to report the file to their anti-malware software support so they can confirm the false positive and remove it from their detection. This will ensure it won't get flagged in the future by anyone else who uses their software.

Finally, when it comes to replicating the malware detection have you tried any of the online anti-virus scanners which use multiple anti-virus engines such as VirusTotal - although you could ask those here who have detected it as malware what anti-malware they are using.

Hopefully this has come across as (intended) helpful rather than criticism.

Allan Winston At https://www.bitsdujour.co...of-the-day
it states:
"Safe, free downloads are often a rarity, so at BitsDuJour we check every download. On each deal you'll see a special "virus scan" link that runs a scan on the actual download installer or executable across a multitude of popular virus scanners. This includes Symantec, Kaspersky, McAfee, Malwarebytes and up to fifty different virus scanners. Great for spotting any potential problems before you download. "

When I clicked on the Virus Scan icon, I encountered an error. Has this feature been removed?

By the way, I am running Windows Defender which is builtin to Windows 11.

Adam Bryan @Allan Winston:
Yeah I tried the Virus Scan before posting and got an error but you'd think if it was removed they'd remove the link and any statement that has that feature in it. It's more than likely a change somewhere has broken the link.

You can report false positives to Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com...submission - I have never had the need to report any false positives to Microsoft so I don't know how long it would take.

If you trust the source you can set Windows Defender to ignore the detection by allowing it (puts it on an exclusion list). To do that:
- open Windows Defender
- click 'Virus & Threat Detection' (on the left)
- click 'Protection History' (below 'Quick Scan')
- click on the blocked threat (User Account Control may prompt to allow changes, click yes)
- check the 'Affected Items' is the file you want to allow, if so click 'Actions' and then 'Allow'

Incidentally I got this software previously which stated it was version 1 (as is shown now) and I have scanned the installer with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes and both flagged it as safe - in the file properties it says 'File Version 3.66.6.0' not sure if yours is different.

According to the 'Fine Print' only the download link expires which implies you can register at any time so long as you have your code and the installer.

Constantin Florea The virustotal link is the following:
https://www.virustotal.co...?nocache=1

As you can see none of the 97 scanners detected anything.

We (BitsDuJour) are hosting the installer on a http:// (not https://) server meaning that when you try to download it you will encounter that warning about the downloading process not being secure. This however (the fact that the downloading process is using http:// instead of https://) does not mean that there is anything wrong with the installer.

Er User Note to all:
Thanks to all and BitsDuJour for your safety comments.
As an additional check on companies I don't know I use:
These checks will give site ratings, where the site is located, and how long it has been registered.
Unfortunately many of the sites have their location as private / not posted.
I find their desire to remain anonymous a concern and consider very carefully if I really want the program to balance against the risk. There may be no virus but the program may collect information from the computer.
Does anybody else have other ways they check the safety of the programs.

Allan Winston I have given up on this program when I found that the split function was not meeting my needs (as documented in my first post), but am curious about the antivirus issue.

I inserted an s where it was needed:
https://download.bitsdujo...il2025.zip

Both Edge and Firefox shows similar errors when entering and invoking the URL.
Running on Firefox:

Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead

Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to download.bitsdujour.com. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the website, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it. You can notify the website’s administrator about the problem.

Then:
Websites prove their identity via certificates. Firefox does not trust this site because it uses a certificate that is not valid for download.bitsdujour.com. The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.blob.core.windows.net, *.ch2prdstr06a.store.core.windows.net, *.blob.storage.azure.net, and more entries

Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN

View Certificate

I right-clicked the zip file and ran a Windows Security scan and it found:
Trojan:Script/Wacatac.C!ml

You can google that trojan name for more information.j

Virustotal.com is showing that URL as safe, so a false positive is definitely a possibility.

I will not be unzipping the file as I already know that the program does not meet my needs.

Adam Bryan @Constantin Florea: Hmm, I getting the impression I've upset some people.

Firstly, as I've pointed out I have not taken the offer this time as I have gotten it during a previous giveaway and it still says "v1.0 for PC". I don't recall getting a virus/malware warning but I've scanned the installer and nothing was found - this despite @Allan Winston saying he got a warning with Windows Defender (one of the two software packages I tested). So to quote @Rick NG "I could not replicate the problem on my end" however I acknowledge that others have and so I offered my advice on what to do.

Secondly, no-one has had any issue with secure connection but with their Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware, hence my advice.

Thirdly, thanks for testing the current installer (not sure if it is different from the one I have) on VirusTotal - I was again pointing out what Rick NG could do to ease peoples concerns that it is indeed safe.

Incidentally is the VirusTotal link supposed to be where 'Virus Scan' link takes you or is that something the developer is supposed handle.

It just occurred to me that the Windows 11 Defender is probably running a different heuristics engine or powered by AI unlike my Windows 10 version so maybe it is that which is causing the false positive.
