A G Sergey,

Has development stopped! any release dates set already?

No the development didn't stop. We're working on 2.0, which will hopefully be ready in few months.

when buying this version will I liable for free upgrade say for example v2? or what is your update policy?

All customers receive free *minor* upgrades (i.e. from 1.50 to 1.80 version). These upgrades are available for download from our website, just download and reinstall the product.

*Major* upgrades (i.e. from 3.xx to 4.xx version) are always free of charge for any customer within 3 months since the date of the purchase. In other cases, we charge a discounted upgrade price (typically 24.95 $).

Source code libraries (*.cl1 files) are free regardless of your version, all our customers will continue to have access to all our libraries even if they use an old build.

*Major* updates are free in case of bugs, so any customer who suffer from a bug in version 1.xx automatically receive a free upgrade to version 2.xx

Finally, we reserve the right at our sole discretion to offer free major upgrades to our beta testers

Best regards,
Nora.

Greg Miles Hi, got two questions:
- Which new prog. languages will be added in 2.x ?
- Will there be a possibility (in 2.x) to define a custom syntax highlighting for languages not yet supported?

You can already define a custom language in 1.xx, which language do you want to add?

Jonathan Keener I'll throw my 2 cents in....

I'm considering getting this tomorrow and the main languages I am planning to use with this at the moment are:

Adobe Flex 3 MXML and Actionscript
Salesforce.com APEX (similar ot Java) and Visualforce (HTML based)

Greg Miles Well, I'd like to have Groovy and (forgive me;) - ABAP.
Would be great if at least one of them made it to 2.x
But where in 1.9 can I define it? (sorry, can't find it anywhere).
Aug 17 2009 at 7:57pm Copy Link

A G PhraseExpress is NOT free, and it's mainly for reusing/pasting text snippets, it's certainly NOT a code repository tool

It has no code import, no syntax coloring, no image/webpage support, no code export, no attachments support, doesn't support RTF, ect...

You really cannot compare both tools, I suggest you download SCL and see for yourself

A G Greg and Jon,

ActionScript is already supported in SCL.

Here's how you can create your own custom syntax highlighter:

1. Exit Source Code Library (if you have the system tray option enabled, do not just close SCL window, but choose File - Exit to really shutdown the application)

2. Download the Scheme Editor, located here:

http://www.highdots.com/_...editor.zip

Unzip and run scheme_editor.exe

3. Activate the "Scheme Editor" tab.

You can either use one of the supplied *.sch files as a base for your custom highlighter, or open any *.sch file to learn how it works.

To do this, please press "Load" button and choose any *.sch file from \syntaxschemes\ folder

4. Paste a valid sample code in the bottom editor.

5. Whenever you make changes (add custom keywords, identifiers, etc...), press "Apply" button to actualize the changes you made.

6. Once you added your custom keywords and syntax info, press "Save As" button (NOT Save, it will overwrite the existing *.sch file, if any).

7. Save (or copy) the syntax file to this folder:

User Application Data\OverZone Software\Source Code Library\data\syntaxschemes\

In Windows Vista, this path should look like:

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\OverZone Software\Source Code Library\data\syntaxschemes\

Under XP, replace "Users" with "Documents And Settings", if I'm not mistaken.

If you're using the portable edition, then this file should be located here:

SCL install path\data\syntaxschemes\

Please note: you *must* use .sch as file extension, otherwise Source Code Library won't recognize it.

8. Open "highlighters.txt", it should be located here:

User Application Data\OverZone Software\Source Code Library\data\

Open this file using your favorite text editor and add you language (use the same name as the newly created *.sch file)

9. Launch SCL, your new custom syntax highlighter should be there. Now you can *.RGB or SCL's editor options dialogs to customize the colors.

I hope this help, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions.

Thanks!
Nora.

Richard Tauriello I'm trying to evaluate SCL, but after a while a dialog pops up saying "Security Check Error
Source Code Library is unable to retrieve/check critical registration/trial information, possibly due to OS restrictions or incompatibility with anti-spyware programs installed..."

I'm on Vista x64. I have no outbound firewall or behavioral-based anti-malware enabled.

I can't find any option for setting a proxy server (I'm behind a corporate firewall), but when I use the "check for updates" menu option, it doesn't report any error, so I suppose it's using my Windows-level proxy setting to do that check.

Does the full version require internet access to function?
Aug 18 2009 at 11:35am Copy Link
0
A G Richard, this error means that your antivirus/antispyware is preventing SCL from checking license validity, the check is local, it doesn't require internet access at all.

The full version doesn't do these verification, this issue is only related to the trial one.

A G Oups, the iconico commenting system automatically entered the name of my college, Abdelhamid, as if it was me.

Anyway, I just wanted to add that we also plan to add Windows API library support to 2.0. It won't be like "normal" code libraries, though, but still it will provide easy/quick access to API functions/reference within SCL.

Thanks!

Brad Hi,

Very nice Snippets Manager from what I have seen. I have a question. I have downloaded and installed the program on my Windows 7 Pro machine. I keep getting a diaglog box that pops up after the program is running for about 15 minutes and it states Security Check Error, telling me unable to retrieve critical registration info. Of course it would not find it as I am only trialing the software. Once I get this box the program closes and then I must relaunch again. Is there anyway around this so I can really put the program through it paces. Really nice program from what I am seeing so far.

Thanks, Brad

A G Hi Brad,

Basically your antivirus is preventing SCL protection shell from doing its routine checks.

I suggest one of the following solutions:

1. If it's possible, use/test SCL on a different machine (without this aggressive AV)

2. Depending on your AV, you can also whitelist SCL and see if this fix the problem (this fix the problem with some AVs, but not all of them).

3. Use the full/USB edition (only available to our customers), which is immune to such conflicts.

Best regards,
Nora.

Mica D I just downloaded your trial and checked it for about one hour:

First I have toy say, I like the idea for saving my snippets in a single location and have quick access to them. Also the appearance of your program looks quite good.

But...

In the short timeI tried it I got some serious error-messages/crashes of the program. I'm using XP, so this should not occur.

Is there a new version (perhaps 2.x) coming out the next time and is this free with this buy? Does the current (or next) version run under Win7. The last update to your program and he library was more than 1,5 years ago. So e.g. you allow to insert Delphi-projects, but not the ones created with newer versions of Delphi. And not the C++-Builder ones too...

Perhaps I expected too much, but when I heard snippet-manager I first hoped it had some features like:

- a kind of beautifier: Everyone has it's own used syntax-style, e.g. where to insert spaces, how many spaces to insert, etc. So when displaying your provided libraries it would be nice to see it in the way user is used to see his own code.

- being able to quickly rename parameters being essential for the snippet. E.g. if my program uses str1 for a a string and the snippet uses str I want to be able to quickly replace str with str1, i.e. perhaps even the program explicitely asks me to replace str with the string-name the program expects.

- the libraries being permanently expanded. Perhaps allow to upload snippets explicitely to your server and letting them be rated by the SourceCodeLibrary-users, so when searching one you can see, if a snippet was useful or not.

A G Hi Mica,

In the short timeI tried it I got some serious error-messages/crashes
of the program. I'm using XP, so this should not occur.

Can you expand please? What does the error message says?

Is there a new version (perhaps 2.x) coming out the next time and is this

Yes, yes and yes. I expect the public beta (2.0) to be ready in 3-4 weeks from now. 1.9 should work just fine under Windows 7

The last update to your program and he library was more than 1,5 years
ago. So e.g. you allow to insert Delphi-projects, but not the ones created
with newer versions of Delphi. And not the C++-Builder ones too...

2.0 will be able to import Delphi projects (including *.dpk and *.dpg), we do plan to support C++ Builder project import, but I'm not sure this will done in 2.0

a kind of beautifier: Everyone has it's own used syntax-style, e.g. where
to insert spaces, how many spaces to insert, etc. So when displaying you
provided libraries it would be nice to see it in the way user is used to see
his own code.

There are already several *excellent* freeware code indenters out there so it doesn't make sense to reinvent the wheels.

With that said, we do plan to support code indentation (via "3rd Party Tools" / DOS command capturing) in 2.0

being able to quickly rename parameters being essential for the snippet.
E.g. if my program uses str1 for a a string and the snippet uses str I want
to be able to quickly replace str with str1, i.e. perhaps even the program
explicitely asks me to replace str with the string-name the program expects.

See Advanced -- Macros. That should do it.

the libraries being permanently expanded. Perhaps allow to upload snippets
explicitely to your server and letting them be rated by the SourceCodeLibrary-users,
so when searching one you can see, if a snippet was useful or not.

I really like the idea. In fact, code/library review & sharing is very high in our wish list for 2.5 (unfortunately I'm pretty sure we won't make it in 2.0). Once 2.0 is ready, we'll do our best to fully work on this.

Best regards,
Nora.

Mica D Thanks Nora,

for the extensive answers.

One of the errors in the trial was a security check. So am I wondering a little, if the program dials home (to you) and sending some information while running!? And will I get this errors when I don't allow this (with my firewall)?

Great to hear about v2.x being free for today's customers. Just to be sure: As a single user (and the only one using them), am I allowed to install the program on all of my computers with my single license?

One word to my beautification-proposal: In most cases I think it makes sense to not reinvent the wheel and implement features in a software, that do not really belong there. (So e.g. I'll probably try to remove this clipboard-handling, because I already have a good clipboard-handler.) But in my opinion a beautification makes sense, because you offer a (permantently extended) library. With the options having set adequate, each user will feel comfortable with your snippets at once, if the source-code is displayed the way he is used to. And in my opinion implementing some indentation- and space-adding/removing rules is not really a big thing, compared with some other features in your product.

A G Hi Mica,

Regarding the security check error, please take a look at my previous reply to Brad (Feb 13 2010 4:09am)

This doesn't happen in the full/USB edition.

As for the phoning home, I absolutely HATE software that does this, it doesn't make sense to do this to our customers!

The security shell just check basic stuff (like checking registry). The only purpose of this check is related to trial/expiration.

Yes a single license will allow you to install on multiple PCs (as long as you are the only person using SCL).

Regarding indenters, my initial reaction is that it's actually a significant task to have to support indenters for supported languages (30+), but I do see your point. I'll talk to the team & see what they think.

Best regards,
Nora.

bob roos It looks interesting. You say 30 languages, but I only see 7 listed. I program in Clarion by SoftVelocity and I do see that syntax highlighting is supported for that. Is that where the 30 comes in as the list seems quite long?

BTW, in the demo the screen capture will not go to my 2nd monitor. The "handle" for sliding the window around will not go to the left (negative X coordinates). My right screen is the one with the start circle and the desktop is extended to the left.

Curious action observed. 3 panels: Categories, documents in the highlighted category, text in the highlighted document with highlighted section of text. Click red X in middle panel and it deletes the text in the 3rd panel. I was expecting to delete the document. Also I looked for a way to delete things from the 3rd panel (expecting a red X) but didn't find one.

Ulrich Is there a way to open the program with the last application window size and position, as well as the last used splitter positions? Having the program startup always maximized, on the wrong monitor, and with random splitter positions is counter productive. Furthermore, the "Layout" option is unrelated to what one would expect or the icon implies, instead it serves to customize toolbars...

A G @Bob:

Regarding the syntax languages, please take a look at this kb entry:

http://goo.gl/ds4py

In short, 30+ languages are indeed supported, plus you can easily define as many custom languages as you want.

Regarding the screen capture, I will test it first thing monday and I will get back to you (I will post my answer here)

Regarding the delete button: it strange as it may seem, that's the correct behavior (well let's say it's by design), please let me explain:

Technically speaking we couldn't have 3 different delete buttons (one to delete text, another to delete documents & the last to delete categories) with the *same* hotkey (Del), so...

We coded a single delete button whose behavior change depending on the focused control. Since the focused control is the text editor, SCL deleted the text.

Finally, to delete text, just use the DEL hotkey.

A G @Ulrich:

You're right about the size / position, now that you mentioned it, it's quit annoying actually.

I will look into it monday and I will get back to you (I will post my answer here)

I also agree about the layout name, it was actually meant to be a submenu grouping layouts commands, but then we added the commands you're seeing now without updating the name.

SWREG (our ecommerce provider) replied with this:

==================
The message "banned country" has to do with US trade regulations. Did the customer provide an order number?
==================

Did you receive an order number or something like that so that I can look into it?

Eric Zijlma Hi, sorry but I didn't put down the ordernr, tried to re-enter the order a few times, than gave up. I tried with country Netherlands, and als with country Aruba, but both gave the same message. Maybe the internet provider Scarlet.an was seen as a banned domain.

Is there any way I can still get Source Code Library for the discount price?

Chaim Krause FlyTheAirplane,

I run Win7x64 on my computers now. Wasn't when I purchased this product over a year ago. Don't yet have it installed on any current machines yet. I need to see how it runs on them.

What issues are you seeing and I will try to reproduce.

Matt Hi Chaim Krause,

I installed the Demo version and it seems to run fine during its first run with the ‘Welcome Wizard’. When I exit out of the program and then start it up again, I don’t get any of the three panels in the main part of the window (Categories, Documents & Code panels). They no longer show up.

The only parts of the GUI that show up are the menu and toolbars. Nothing in the lower part of the window shows up. It is completely blank no matter what libraries I open. The Library name is displayed in the Title Bar but nothing shows below.

I've uninstalled Source Code Library (SCL) and then re-installed it. After re-installing, the same happens. When I run SCL again the ‘Welcome Wizard’ and the three panels show up fine until I exit the program. The next time I run SCL, the three panels no longer show up.

Rebooting the PC doesn't help.

I've contacted tech support but haven't yet received an answer.

Thank you.

A G @Chaim & Van: there will be an update later today.

@FlyTheAirplane: We actually use Windows 7 64 bits on our machines, SCL has been extensively tested on Windows 7 and should run just fine.

Nora sent you few questions via email in order to isolate the issue and hopefully fix it. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need further support/clarifications.

Michael Lenser Since purchasing SCL I have received 2 emails from SWReg and both contain the following error:

**Source Code Library (Bits du Jour Special) 1 @ USD 29.99 each**

KEYCODE(S):

The following error occured: Couldn't add client - Client Not Found
==============================================

I have looked and cannot see how to register as a client on your website?

A G @Michael & Mark: I'm not sure what happened, for some reason SWREG (our ecommerce provider) failed to send the order data to our system, which caused the automated account creation to fail in your cases.

I manually created your accounts, I'm going to do some digging, really sorry guys!

Isn't there a chance to try before buying?

A G @Mark: You're welcome, thank you for your understanding!

@Pavi: I hate to say this, but the Security shell that we're using is a bit of a black box (even for us), so I can't say for sure why this happened to you.

With that said, the full edition doesn't have this limitation at all. And we offer 90-day no-question-asked guarantee.

As a customer I *really* hate having such replies from software vendors, but...

A G @Michael R.: In all honesty our focus is more put on the "popular languages".

We're working on a new rss feeds reader right inside SCL, this will enable our users to quickly get quality code/resources right from their favorite websites (pastebin websites comes to mind)

Stay tuned!

marek jedlinski @AG: I'm having the same problem as the posters above. Purchased through SWReg (PayPal), then received an email with:

"KEYCODE(S): The following error occured: Couldn't add client - Client Not Found"

Thanks in advance for your help!

The problem may be related to the fact that during the payment process SWReg insists on displaying at least three pop-up windows. The first two contain only SWReg's logo ("Thank you for shopping with SWRrg", and as such are useless time-wasters), but the third pop-up came up AFTER the payment, and was blocked by Firefox. I can unblock popups, but cannot get that one back. Anyway, SWReg is definitely playing up, and all the pop-ups just make buyers unhappy. (Not your fault, I know, but perhaps you could ask them what it's all about.).

marek jedlinski @AG: Thank you, I got the email.

Do I understand correctly that:

(a) there is no registration key at all, just the special version to download?

(b) I can *only* installed it as a USB (portable) version? I'd rather install it under Program Files, but the installer does not permit that.

Your instructions read:

2. Click on "My Services"
3. Click on the right green icon that corresponds to "Source Code Library - Source Code Library v2"

- but there is no green icon on that page. There's a blue "View details" button, which leads me to download a setup package, but during installation there is no choice between a standard and a USB installation.

A G @Marek:

(a) Yes.

(b) The USB edition store its settings under its own directory, ie.

C:\Program Files\Source Code Library v2\data\

Under Vista/Windows 7, this can lead to problems (Program Files is read only)

Your instructions read:

This *is* embarrassing :(

WHMCS changed the layout (and made it harder to find relevant info)

Anyway, this should read:

-----------------
3. Click on the right "View Details" link that corresponds to "Source Code Library - Source Code Library v2"

4. Click on the "Downloads" tab

Download link & install instructions should be there.”
-----------------

For your convenience, I've sent you the full (updated) message again.

during installation there is no choice between a standard and a USB installation.

Correct. The USB edition *is* the full version. The standard version refers to the trial version.

Michael R. @AG:

Your answer: 'In all honesty our focus is more put on the "popular languages".'

That's a strange one: When google-ing I found out that C++ is (behind Java and C) the 3rd most popular programming language. [http://www.devtopics.com/...-languages]

And as it seems neither Java nor C occurs in your categories too...

A G @Michael R.:

By popular languages, I meant what *our* customers use & request.

May be I didn't choose my words wisely, so please let me re-phrase:

I'm *not* saying we don't care about C++ or Java, it's actually quit the opposite: SCL needs more fresh code libraries in every language possible!

That's why I stated that we're working on automating/simplifying *quality* code collection.

One of the things that we're working on to achieve this is the built-in support of RSS feeds and (much more robust) library/code sharing.

I hope this clarify.

Matt Just an update...

Even though my Windows 7 (64-bit) display issue hasn't been resolved, I can speak very highly of Nora's excellent technical support! I am guessing my issue is an isolated case (since no one else has mentioned such a problem).

Thank you, Nora for your excellent support!

Jan-Christoph Ihrens In my case the trial said it had expired (although downloaded just a moment before). Well, I'll try it again the next time - hopefully the glitches mentioned here will be fixed then. :)
