What are people saying about Storybook Pro

Pavi Johnson Hi, I am a user of Storybook Pro. What can I say other than it is the best story or writing tool I have ever found!

What makes it superb is that it allows you to plan your story, or any kind of writing (even academic) by following plot lines, characters, timelines, locations, etc. When you have a complicated plot, keeping track of things becomes difficult, and this tool helps tremendously. Other tools focus on writing environment, which is useful, but how do you keep track of 7 main plot threads, 30 characters over 10 years in 20 locations?

The author is very responsive and develops it actively. He added two of my suggestions (horizontal scrolling, and spacing of scenes). Other users have discovered that it can be used for project management or personal development, by using "Characters" as Projects or Goals (and they can even be renamed as such).

For the Bits price, this is really a steal for anyone plotting a story, novel/book, screenplay, TV show, academic writing or even as an organizational tool.

Best, /Pavi

Stefan Hauber Does it RUN under win7, x64?

I know, there is no x64 version of this program, but this does not mean necessarily it won't work in a 64-bit system...
Jan 18 2012 at 4:07am Copy Link
Martin Mustun Windows 64bit is officially not supported, which doesn't mean it's not working in general. Best you try to install and run the free version. It the free version works, Storybook Pro will work, too.
Some say it's necessary to install the 32bit version of Java besides the 64bit version. That's the only hint I can give you.
Intertec - Jan 18 2012 at 4:12am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson Hi, it works fine for me under Windows 64 bit. I do believe that I have both versions of Java installed.

Of course a program not need be written/compiled as 64 bit to run in windows 64 bit. It is just useful if it does tremendous calculations or needs massive memory.

Best, /Pavi
Jan 18 2012 at 4:42am Copy Link
Martin Mustun Many thanks, Pavi, for clarifying that! Also many thanks for your testimonial!
Intertec - Jan 18 2012 at 4:45am Copy Link
Stefan Hauber I installed it too and it does run. But I did not make any deeper tests, so, because I thought I better would ask...
Jan 18 2012 at 5:02am Copy Link
Martin Mustun The critical part for 64bit systems is the installation. Once it runs, Storybook should behave exactly the same as on a 32bit system. At least that's what Oracle promise with Java ("Write once, run anywhere").
Intertec - Jan 18 2012 at 5:08am Copy Link
Michael R. I don't know if this makes too much sense, but is it possible to embed files into the story-snippets, e.g. pics or videos?

Jan 18 2012 at 5:12am Copy Link
Martin Mustun With the current version that's not possible. It is planned to allow rich text (HTML) in the next version. For more information have a look at our task tracker:
What kind of content then can be integrated is an open question. It depends on the ability of the used Java component, but at least images should work.
Intertec - Jan 18 2012 at 5:21am Copy Link
Michael R. Thanks for the quick answer...

Images would be great. For the rest, it would be suffiicient if a double-click would just call an external program. (I don't know if this is possible in Java)

Would this next version free for today's customers?
Jan 18 2012 at 5:26am Copy Link
Martin Mustun Minor updates are included for free. Major updates are available under preferred conditions for customers.
Intertec - Jan 18 2012 at 5:31am Copy Link
Michael R. Yes I read it in the policies. So I'll ask the question another way: Will this image-inclusion be a minor or major update?
Jan 18 2012 at 5:39am Copy Link
Martin Mustun I cannot answer this question. Please understand we cannot discus our company strategy here. We can guarantee that we will always offer a very fair price for updates to all customer in case the next version is a major one. Thanks for your understanding.

Software Guy Looks like the software has great potential. From my point of view, it must accept graphic files and links (internal to files and external) as this is an integral part of writing. When these features are added I will buy as I really like the overallconcept/ flow of the software. The current offering should work well for novels (aspiring Danielle Steele and Stephen King types) and would probably also work well for an academic course outliner. And one more nice to have - the ability to pin sticky notes anywhere as reminders for the writers- these are very handy to remember those little details without breaking concentration on the composition of the current thread.
Jan 18 2012 at 7:08am Copy Link
Martin Mustun Storybook Pro 3.2 already has a feature called "flash of inspiration". With that tool one can add upcoming ideas very quickly. However I do see it would be even nicer if ideas could be stick to scenes.

John Killeen At what stage in the purchase is the discount applied? Using the discount link above, the shopping cart still shows full price for me...
Jan 18 2012 at 3:30pm Copy Link
Jeff Easlick I'm not seeing any discount on the price either.
Jan 18 2012 at 3:44pm Copy Link
Jaydeem The 'Buy Now' link does not offer today's discount price.
Jan 18 2012 at 4:12pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson Sorry for the trouble folks, not sure what's going on with the discount! Checking into things now...

BitsDuJour Admin - Jan 18 2012 at 4:45pm Copy Link
A K Am having difficulties with buying, too.
There is no option for £ sterling.
And am worried that PayPal may try to 'hijack' the purchase, as I have a Paypal account, though am not using it for today's offer.
Jan 18 2012 at 5:25pm Copy Link
Tazzie I, too, am still not showing a discount :(
Jan 18 2012 at 5:53pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson Apologies! We're aware of the problem. Once it's sorted out I'll post back here regarding a coupon extension or reschedule :)

BitsDuJour Admin - Jan 18 2012 at 5:55pm Copy Link
KS Yes, also experiencing the same problem. I've been trying off and on for four hours now. I've used the Free version in the past, but really want the Pro version with so much more offerings.
Jan 18 2012 at 7:13pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson Ok folks, no need to keep posting about the discount issue, we're well aware of the problem :)
BitsDuJour Admin - Jan 18 2012 at 7:16pm Copy Link
Jerry S Pavi Johnson suggests StoryBook Pro can be used for non-fiction writing. How? I looked through the documentation and testimonials and Facebook page and don't see how this can be used for non-fiction writers like me. Please illuminate. Thanks.
Jan 18 2012 at 9:13pm Copy Link
Alexander Deliyannis @Jerry S For potential non-fiction use of StoryBook take a look at this ongoing thread http://www.outlinersoftwa...-30-review

I stress that, as far as I understand, StoryBook's programmer has indeed developed the software with fiction writing in mind. The project management perspective is more of a "user's hack".
Jan 18 2012 at 10:22pm Copy Link
Jerry S Alexander, thank you very much!

Martin Mustun Seems there was a problem with different time zones (our sever is not in the US). We will refund the difference to all customers of course.
Intertec - Jan 19 2012 at 12:14am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson @Bits

I understand that technical problems happen sometimes... I didn't try to buy as a licensed user. Still, it''s a bit disappointing as certainly many people didn't order to the lack of discount.

This software is exactly why Bits is so great - it is something people might not know about and get to try and buy at a discount price. I hope it comes back soon!

Best, /Pavi

Martin Mustun Well, I think our normal price is very fair, too. Furthermore we have other discounts regularly (announced on our Facebook page and in the "go pro" window in the free version).

Many thanks for all who bought Storybook Pro - and we apologize for the inconvenience about the wrong price.
Intertec - Jan 19 2012 at 12:47am Copy Link
Michael R. @Martin Mustun

You wrote: We will refund the difference to all customers of course.

Unfortunately you wrote this when the offer already was timed out...

I was one of them who did not buy because of the missing discount and was hoping the offer would be expanded one further day, when the promised price was corrected.Unfortunately BDJ did not expand the offer.

So is it possible to buy your software today and you will refund the difference or do all customers with these problems have to wait for the next time?
Jan 19 2012 at 1:28am Copy Link
Pavi Johnson I agree that Storybook Pro is a great deal even at normal price - no regrets whatsoever, and very happy that I found it.

At the discounted price it's a steal!

Best, /Pavi

A K 1) "Roger Thomasson Apologies! We're aware of the problem. Once it's sorted out I'll post back here regarding a coupon extension or reschedule :)"

2) “Martin Mustun It was not possible to stay awake all night because of the promotion (again, different time zones). That's why we acted after the promotion was over already.

However - since this seems to be a huge impact we expanded the special price for 1 day. Please note that this price reduction has nothing to do with the BitsDuJour promotion anymore. Also note it is for both, the Windows and Linux version now.”

Comment 2 seems to confirm the spirit of Comment 1.
It seems to have been deleted.
And the reduction webpage on the developer's site has gone.

Your loyal customers feel teased, BJD.

Joe Newell Yes, I went on to bed too. I've used bitsdujour for a LONG time and I'm certain that Roger will find a way for us to get this discount.

Jan 19 2012 at 3:50pm Copy Link
Roger Thomasson @ A K, Robert, Michael, EVERYBODY

Patience please, when I said we were working on things I wasn't kidding :)

I promise, I'll post here as soon as there is something to post!

Roger Thomasson Ok folks, sorry again for the confusion and delays! Martin has agreed to re-promote Storybook Pro on Bits -- look for it on the 27th of this month.

Thanks for your patience!
