What are people saying about SWiJ SideWinder

gail f I downloaded sidewinder to evaluate it, and it looks really nice, BUT I am uninstalling w/Revo right away before I get a chance to really look at it. Why? Because it has a pop-up asking you to buy it...EVERY 5 MINUTES!  Are you kidding??????  Who could tolerate it on their compuater for an hour, never mind 2 days untill buying?

Sorry, but you lost a sale before it even had a chance!

Walter Jayanth Hi, You shouldn't been so hasty on that. There is a mode called 'BASIC MODE' for FREE users. At the first run a window will ask you to select the Mode. If you select the BASIC Mode then no popup will ever come to disturb you. You can also select this mode later by Right Clicking on the "Settings" button at the Side Bar. We have even adjusted the popup time to 15 minutes now. In the earlier versions we gave the users 1 hour popup time to evaluate the product. But most of the users were very good at working with the trial version. :-))

Jon Koerner Interesting idea, but it seems to use a great deal of memory - 49MB in Basic Mode, which is more than my antivirus/antispyware/firewall is using, and I have not even added any buttons.  I fear that if one actually tried to use it, adding a few hundred buttons, the memory load may become far too high.  What are you doing to address this?

The help system is not helpful:
1. always on top, user can't control this
2. window not resizable
3. cannot search Help -- !!!! ???  What were you thinking??

What is licensing?  Per-user?  (single user can install on multiple computers?).

No control over the UI?  Can't change button size, fonts, etc?  I don't need such large buttons.  Most of the themes are unusable - white on white background is unreadable. What version is this?

There should be an easier way to add buttons - such as drag-drop groups of links from Start-Programs menu at once - rather than laboriously entering manually one by one.  I'm reluctant to invest all the time that would be required to actually set it up with all my apps etc., only to then find out that it uses too much memory to be usable. What are you doing to address such concerns?

Walter Jayanth I don't know in what mode you have used the SideWinder first, but it will never consume more than 30 MB in Basic Mode. You may have started it in Advanced Mode and then switched it in Basic Mode so the used memory remains to quickly switch it back to Advanced Mode. Try to restart the Application after switching it to Basic Mode. Please remember the Advanced Mode has built-in media players, picture viewer and lot of other mini applications. If you load a media file using the built-in players then the memory will be used according to the Media File type and size as it is always the case with any media players. Whether you add 1 button or 15,000 buttons at once the interface of the SideWinder doesn't change. It is designed for dynamic Button Info Allocation only. That is it will not consume additional memory for any additional number of buttons you add. (By the way the SideWinder always open with those 15,000 buttons) You have to understand that your Antivirus and other programs you have mentioned do not use graphical processing at all. Even though they do not consume memory at large, they tend to capture the CPU power and make your OS run slow. SideWinder does not do that and using a little more memory will not slow down your PC, unless you're using an antique machine. We have clearly mentioned the system requirements for the SideWinder on our website. Yes, you can easily drag and drop group of icons to the Category Slots from the Start Menu. For that you need to open the particular menu folder first and then drag them to the Nip while the SideWinder expands, and then drop them on a Slot of your choice.  I don't know why you have complained about the Help, since we have given it very simple as well as very illustrative manner. There are no advanced techniques you need to search. Many children use our software and they're very good at it. The Help window does not stay on top over a window that is associated with the SideWinder. It will stay on top over other windows and you can easily close it or minimize it with a click. Why on earth you want to resize the Help window. If you don't like the built-in Help, then please download the PDF Help document we provide on our website. Our license model is that if you have an Activation Code, you can use it on the number of machines specified or number of users specified below. (Single - 1, Home - 3, Pro - 10) Activation and everything is automated. You only need to be online once to get the product activated. We understand your need to change the Button size and font, and we're continually developing the SideWinder with new features and user customizations which every user can accept. Any way you only need to purchase the product once and Life Time updates are for free. About the Themes, they are just 7 out of the 25 themes in the Full Version. Why would we give out all the beautiful themes with the FREE version ? If you don't like the white on white then leave it. There are some others who like pure white color. And for your information none of the themes out of the 7 is white on white.

DrTeeth @Walter

You will do you self more harm than good by not being polite. Programmers are usually too close to their software and realise that only users can trial it properly. Users can need things that the programmer thinks are silly and unnecessary.

gail f Thank you Guy for reminding this developer we are the customers. Being told "You shouldn't been so hasty on that" and "most of the users were very good at working with the trial version" (implied I am not as good as "most") --then telling me I should have known to pick "Basic" vs. "Advanced" in the trial software?? Who would pick "Basic" when trying to see what it does? Wow-they changed the popup to  every 15 minutes vs. 5 minutes? Would could tolerate that 4 times every hour until today when you could buy it? It also did not uninstall easily and required Revo to make it stop. I have found you can really tell a good developer by their responses here: rating speed, defensiveness, helpfulness and respect.

H. H. Hallo,
1. will there be a memory - using  optimization in the future.
Trying advance mode usage is 49500kb?

2.what activation procedure is necessary in case one reformats the harddisk or the pc is damaged and one has to buy a new one. Some companies have quite a reasonable handling (like adobe, they allow to activate several times, and - when chaning haarddisk /pc is planned and not cause through a failure - to deactivate the product beford and than to activate it again), When having bought a product but possibly running into difficulties when having to reinstall /reformat inbetween becomes an argument for or againt buyina a product (of course I understand that developers must protect their software, but inbetween they often punish people which regulary purchased the software.
thank you for answering soonly in advance

Andreas Hoffmann Dear Walter,
are there plans to make the adresses of the search-engines changeable? I come from germany and would like to search the german part of the wikipedia (de.wikipedia.org) and so on...
And is it right that I habe to buy the home license if I want to use your software on my desktop pc an my notebook?

Thanks in advance + greetings - Andreas

Walter Jayanth @ H. H. 1. Yes. We're concentrating on that and could be able to provide some solutions in the future releases. It takes less memory in Windows 7 than Windows XP. 2. You can re-install and re-activate the product normally if your hardware or operating system does not change for a certain level. But if you experience a failure in Activation please contact us with the original Activation Code and we'll adjust the Activation System in no time. This has happened to many of our customers and we do provide them with immediate solution without wasting the time on verifying the legitimacy of the request. Sometimes we even have helped our customers to transfer the Activation from a Desktop PC to a Laptop. So no need to worry about handling such situations in the future.

Walter Jayanth Dear Andreas, Yes we have thought about that, and it is a must for users with different languages and different interests. We have a plan to create a separate interface for the users to edit and select the search engines of their choice. We also planned to provide lot of other customizations as well regarding to the interface. That's right you need a Home License which supports upto 3 PCs for a single Activation Code. We do not restrict the number of users who could use the code in a single computer. Thanks.

Andreas Hoffmann Dear Walter,

thanks for your quick answer!
At the moment the URLS (for wikipedia etc.) are hardcoded? No way for a user to change it? :-(

Will see if I need the 'advanced' version on my laptop, perhaps the free version is enough...
Don't want to complain about the price, they are really ok, but the steps between the editions are a little bit steep.
I have to pay nearly :-) the double price for use it on my notebook, too - thats not very understandable, at least for me!

Greetings - Andreas

Walter Jayanth Dear Andreas, Please give us upto 10 search engines' search urls, and their icons and we'll give you a custom compiled version as a temporary solution for your problem. But not today since it has been a busy day for us due to the promotion. The prices with the discount is fairly cheap since you can purchase the Home License for the price of the Personal License today only. We have decided not to include the SideWinder in BitsDuJour promotion ever again, since it's a big loss for us because of the Huge discount and other affiliate fees. Also we do provide Life Time free updates so once a customer has purchased we do not have much of a chance to sell to him again unless in Multi-PC license. The only reason that we have included the SideWinder in today's promotion is that people do not clearly understand the capabilities of the program beyond just a quick launcher.  We believe that our software is one of kind and our intension is to make SideWinder the best utility program ever.

Louis H Dear Walter,

While I have some questions related directly to using the program on my machine, I do appreciate your willingness to be here online and attempt to answer folks questions and concerns.

At $6 a license - with today's discount for the "Home" version (3 licenses) - I am willing to pick it up and play around with it some more without any nag screen. (And my understanding is that when you gave folks an hour between nag screens many were able to use it without every actually purchasing it as it would indeed be quite easy to deal with a nag screen that only came up once an hour.)

I have lots of video, music, and image files that the quick access feature alone makes this utility program worth picking up. When I am actively working with such files I have other programs I use, but there are lots of times when I cannot remember what a specific file looks or sounds like and I do not want to load a full viewing program, thus this feature will save me time (and thus money) and so even if I do not use the other features (which I will use) it's worth picking up today.

I admit that I was not all that interested in this one until I started reading the comments and found myself wanting to know more about what others were so concerned about.

Having worked as a nurse for more than 28 years with folks from lots of different cultures I do not place as much emphasis anymore on how someone's words initially sound to me without seeking further clarification before assuming an insult was intended.

More important to me about your responses here is that you appear to demonstrate a clear willingness to interact with folks and work with them to come up with solutions to their programs.

I've worked with Doctors who come across as very polite, but don't have a clue as to what they are actually doing. And I've worked with some who are labeled "rude" but are experts at quickly identifying what is wrong with a patient and coming up with solutions. While it's nice to have both features in a Doctor, if I can only have one, I'll take the latter any day.

So whether you intended to come across in a "rude" or "condescending" manner or not doesn't matter to me. Especially when our "relationship" is over a piece of software. More important is that you are willing to be available to help identify a solution to any problem I may have with that software. I believe you are willing to do so and thus I am willing to purchase Sidewinder today.

Walter Jayanth Dear Louis, Thank you for your kind words. It's not good to be rude at all. But sometimes your limits are exposed. I'm glad that the software is useful to many in different ways. Please remember to install the K-Lite Codec Pack which is available for free, if you want to play almost all types of Audio and Video formats using the SideWinder.

Louis H Walter,

Are there any plans to allow for more user control over the Side Bar buttons and which program(s) they access? I never use "Paint," but I do have other such programs I would prefer setting it up to use. And like Andreas, I would like more freedom to configure my own choices for search engines.

I understand that I could set up any program by adding them to a Category Slot, but it would be nice if there were easy options for setting up which program gets started, or to even replace less used tasks in the Side bar with those I use most often.

Also, any plans for allowing the user to change the location for where the side bar and category slots appear?

P.S. That thing I mentioned about the cost is not a complaint, simply a statement that I set a weekly/monthly limit as to how much I can spend for new software and if I am going to buy this today it will be the "Home" version. There are a few other things I was thinking about also picking up this week, but one of those would need to be put off till another week if I pay $30 today. I would have been able to get them  both when I thought Sidewinder "Home" was only $18. SO the question I have to decide is will Sidewinder be worth it in the long run (and I need the 3 licenses if it will be) and can I put off getting the other item for another time. Gaining more control over the configuration settings for the Side Bar - even if only at present on the "to do" list for future versions - would be something to add in the "Pros" column as I try to decide whether to get this today or not. Thanks

Steve M.    I have my task bar set to Auto-Hide.  Given that they discovered a problem with right and left tasks bars, I was wondering whether there was a problem with Auto-Hide taskbars.

Steve

P.S.  Not to harp on this, but comments like "Many children use our software and they're very good at it" (implying the asker wasn't as smart as a child) or questions like "Why on earth you want to resize the Help window" (um, because I want to fit it in a different space) do come across as rude.  Perhaps English isn't your native language, so you don't understand the nuances of what you're saying, but those were a bit over the top.

H. H. Hallo,
thank you for answering the above questions.
I think I'm going to support your software with buying, hoping that aou'll improve it in the future. I agree to the above comments, that more customization abilities (left, vertical buttons like paint, search machines,..) would be helpful.
Now 3 more questions occured while testing
1. when using the internal media player of your software, is there a possibility to fastly forward the e.g. mp3 file to a certain position (e.g. middle of the slider) - when I try to move the slider, it can be moved forward, but then goes back to the previous position?
2. when doubleclicking on'the recycle-bin button (from "my pc) it does no open recycle bin, but "c:\" - is that a bug?
3. what's the "home adress" button for? usually one knows ones own adress, wouldn't it make more sense to put all information in one button, and than give the opportunity to add other adresses with some more buttons? - or did I misunderstood the purpose of the "home adress" button
Thank you for answering soonly again
with kind regards
H.H.

Louis H Steve,

I am experiencing no problem with my Windows Taskbar set to Auto Hide when it is on the bottom. the problem appears to only occur if you have the Windows Taskbar set to appear (with or without Auto Hide) on the right or left side of your screen. I tried setting my Windows taskbar somewhere other than the bottom and SideWinder crashes.

H.H.

I am able to scroll to different parts of an mp3 file (forwards and reverse) when I am using the media feature from the Category Slot "Folders" and the slot I have set up for "Sample Music." The problem for me, however, is this feature appears to be quite buggy and does not work consistently.

When I click on the "recycle bin" button from the "My PC" tab, it opens the recycle bin.

Regarding the "Home Address" button - this can all be changed to anything you want it to say by right clicking on the button and changing the text for the label for the button. I easily changed this to say Work Address. (although I think I will be changing all of these to something else in the near future.)

One feature I found while playing around that is fun (and has some potential for the kind of graphical work I do as a hobby) is that when viewing images with the built in image viewer I can access a folder with lots of images, roll my mouse wheel rapidly and the built in viewer quickly, and smoothly, flips through them all. I have already made a couple of "flip books" using a series of webcam photos that change slightly by setting a screen recorder I use (one coming up soon for a great discount here on BitsDuJour by the way - AVCenter) to record the image viewer area and then "rolling" thorugh the images. I then take the recorded video, edit it in a video editor, and have a neat little "flip-book" to add to the slide shows I make for people. Not necessarly something many will find useful or even desirable, but it led me to go ahead and purchase the program today while on discount.

Walter Jayanth Sorry for the delayed responses. @Louis Yes we have had many requests regarding such user customization outside this forum also. We did the best to put everything that the standard Windows (All Versions) offer as applications into the Side Bar. Nevertheless MS Paint is a useful application, but we'll come up with a solution to add custom configuration to the Side Bar buttons. Function of the SideWinder in relative to the location of the TaskBar at Left and Right can be solved easily. But we need more time to alter the SideWinder location, hence it will significantly increase the code size and reduce the performance. P.S. Your budget plan is always acceptable. @ Steve I really meant what I said. Sorry. But you're right about the native language part. @ H.H. Yes you can fast forward by dragging the slide bar along the line very easily. SideWinder does it as fast as the Windows could support. Also you can fast forward by using the Arrow keys on the keyboard (Left and Right). The Recycle bin problem seems weird. It shouldn't open MyComputer at all. But a single click is enough to open the Recycle Bin.

Jerry S  Having worked with the trial version for several hours, I purchased the Home license.

Personally I feel the developer was attacked without reason here. There was nothing "rude" or unseemly in his response to the questions and issues raised. some of which were clearly belligerent.

No one twists anyone's arm to buy the products offered on BitsDuJour. I think it's pretty cool that developers and publishers offer their products at substantial discounts. More than once I have purchased an additional license for a product offered here that I already own because it was cheaper than the upgrade.

If you don't like a product or doesn't fill your needs, don't buy it.

There is no reason to insult the developers and publishers who offer their goods here. Criticism is one thing, but an offensive attitude is quite something else.

As far as this product is concerned, I think the developer is doing his best to deliver a good product and intends to make it better. That's why I paid for the full version.

Jon Koerner @H.H.  What "recycle bin" button from the "My PC" tab ??  I don't see any "My PC" tab at all, nor a Recycle button.

I would need to install on my five computers, but you only have license packages for 3 ("Home" package) or 10 computers ("Pro").

The Settings dialog window, in addition to the Help window, is Always on Top - this needs to be changed - also allow Help window to be resized -- give the user a choice about how they want their desktop to be arranged.

It is irrelevant whether "children" can use this program or not - they aren't your paying customers, we are your paying customers and you should not insult us.  If I want to be able to resize the  help window or have it behind another window, there's a reason for that, and you should perhaps be asking why a user would want that rather than saying that children don't ask for it.

I'll probably purchase this - based upon the 30-day money back guarantee - and see whether developer will be responsive to user needs during that time.  I hope to see resizable buttons & fonts at least - I intend to create a large number of buttons, but they can't all be shown on the screen with such large buttons.

As for the memory issue - yes, it was first in Advanced mode, then switched to basic mode, so that's apparently why it is using 49MB+ of memory still.

Is there a way to disable some of the "advanced mode" features that I don't have any need for, such as MP3 players etc.?  I want as small a memory footprint as possible, only care about the menuing, not about adding "features."  The poll on the website only asks about desired added features, not about improvements to the primary function, which is menuing - let's improve that first before adding bloat.

Chuck Only minor updates since 2010...

Does it work on Windows 8, 8.1 or 10?

How does this compare to Start Menu X and True Launch Bar?

Chris Why only one installation and footprint? When I get a new computer I will have to contact you to reset the key. Will you do this since you say we can transfer it to another computer? Will it be a fast process of the same day I contact you? I love to support the developers that offer lifetime updates / upgrades.

Also the above price shows this is for the $29.95 DUAL LICENSE
which shows on your site is; Activation Code for 2 Users or 2 PCs

Personal license on your site shows $19.95 for 1 user / pc and you are selling it here for $17.97 which is far less than 40% off.

Pro license is 2 cents more here than on your site.

Christian User Not very clear all that :
On one hand :
"After you purchase SWiJ SideWinder it may be used indefinitely.
Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed." (fine print)

of the other :
if one observes your police's terms on your site, the activation cannot be achieved that only one time !!!
So-called us clearly what happens for the activation in the case of a change of PC....
Thank you for advance for these precisions that condition for me the purchase !

Walter Jayanth You may use the Activation Code to either activate one or many PCs according to the number of activations permitted. If you have purchased the Home License, then you may use the Activation Code to activate any 3 PCs/Laptops of your own, or you can share the activation privileges with your friends/family to activate any 3 machines. But the activation count is limited according to the license type.

Chris @ Walter Jayanth ~ The reason I asked about the other themes is because your site shows : Additional Themes Supplied With The Full Version

When I purchased the Full Version from here I assumed by that phrase on your site that after I entered my serial key that it would unlock those additional themes. If they are a seperate purchase then it needs to be updated to show that instead of saying that you get those themes with the Full Version.

I do thank you for giving it to those of us who purchased today.

Gary Smith I see the Home Edition for $19.95 offered on the developer's website as well, and it also has a 1700+ icon pack added with the special offer.

On the SWij website home page and on the Buy now page, there is a blue background graphic advertising a special offer for the Home edition (3 users) for $19.95. It leads to: https://sites.fastspring....ecialoffer

Not only is the price less than here on Bitsdujour, you get the icon pack.

If the Bitsdujour offer is really a special price, then it should also offer the 1700+ icon pack, AND have a lower price than the $19.95.

Walter Jayanth Hi, we're sorry. The Special Offer on our home page is an outdated one. And the price is actually $29.95 for the Home Licence package. The offer in BitsDuJour is new and better than the old one on the banner.

Thanks.

eb235 I guess we're going to hear the same old tune about the special prices... in 2019 !

Let me quote Gary Smith (back in December 2016) "I see the Home Edition for $19.95 offered on the developer's website as well, and it also has a 1700+ icon pack added with the special offer.[...] If the Bitsdujour offer is really a special price, then it should also offer the 1700+ icon pack, AND have a lower price than the $19.95."
And let me quote Walter Jayanth the developer answering a few hours later "The Special Offer on our home page is an outdated one. And the price is actually $29.95 for the Home Licence package."

Now if you're browsing http://www.swij.com/sidew...uynow.html and click on the "time limited offer" to get to https://sites.fastspring....ecialoffer you'll have the opportunity to buy the offer mentioned by Gary. I stopped checking at that point but this left me uneasy.

Are we struck with a recurring lack of luck ? Meaning that whenever there's a BDJ offer, there was just before a better offer on the developer's site but he forgot to end his offer ?
Or the developer has forgotten for more than two years to update his web site ?
Or ... ?

I don't mean to be harsh to the dev but buying on the Internet, especially software, is mainly a matter of trust. If there are facts you don't understand, you're not encouraged to have trust.
So I think a clarification would be in order. Thank you.

Bill Sech I installed and was testing this program. Eventually, I clicked on the Application button down near the left bottom there (the one that opens a bar where icons can be drag and dropped) and instantly my todo list program (Swift To Do List 11 Evaluation which was open and minimized) came up and something selected all the tasks in view and marked them complete. I was able to reproduce this behavior a few more times in exactly the same manner. So I uninstalled sidewinder and will not use it.

Neither of the codes has worked. When entered I get a message saying

"your license has been revoked successfully!"

Never saw such an error message before? What do I do now? The product keeps insisting that it's not activated.

HJ B Yesterday, I posted a comment showing that I checked the developer's website and found that, as noted by eb235, had been the case in 2016, the Developer was STILL charging more on BDJ than was being charged on the developer's website for the "home license. ($19.95, as opposed to $23.97). I provided a link to the page of the developer's site at which that lower offer was made.

For some reason, my comment did not survive the BDJ filtering process.

i went back to the developer's site, today, and found that the special offer had been removed, and a set of new offers was posted - 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 license packages. http://www.swij.com/sidew...index.html

The new "home license) (3 licenses) price is now in accord with the claim of a 40% discount.

In my view, when this sort of thing happens a posting about it should not be filtered out. It remains relevant that the new higher price schedule went into effect contemporaneously with the BDJ offer (or as was the case here, only after the offer was posted and a complaint was made).

I trust the BDJ operator will not filter out this second message on the point. This is clearly not a "bad apple" posting.

Walter Jayanth Apologies to all for who had issues with SideWinder activation. We request you to try the activation again with your Activation Codes.

Also, we're unable to reproduce any other issues mentioned here other than the Nip get hidden by certain full screen tasks in Windows 10.

Please note the current SideWinder is released prior to the latest Windows and we have not updated the software or website since 2010.

Garrett Goyette Hi,
I downloaded he demo, liked what i saw, paid for he Pro 10 license versions. Activated the demo with the pro code but since i did not see the 100 categories and still saw only the 10 categories supplied by demo, i uninstalled the entire program re-downloaded from my email notification hoping the pro version might be a larger file than the demo [identicql size}. i then reinstalled put in my PRO activation code and got the message that my license was successfully revoked and now i am stuck with a demo mode which will time out after the trial period even though i paid for TEN machines. I am a bit frustrated, once again a developer so paranoid of people jacking his program for free that he is punishing paying users and has squandered any his good will. please let vendor know to jump on this obvious common complaint

Adi Abir I couldn't activate the application. You 'requested' that we try the activation again. Tried it. Didn't work.

If 'the current SideWinder is released prior to the latest Windows and we have not updated the software or website since 2010' why do you charge people for a program that you have not tested for the latest versions of Windows?

Please make sure that my activation code will actually activate the program or else, refund the $11.97 you charged me.

John Moverley I agree with Adi Abir.

I have been using BitsduJour for many years and have received many good bargains.

However, I am very disappointed that BitsduJour would feature a program that seems unsupported, the installation code does not work and that the company does not answer e-mails sent to the support team.
