Text-R Virus Scan Report

What are people saying about Text-R

Joe M I tried the trial version of Text-R. The OCR accuracy was OK most of the time. I find that ABBYY Screenshot reader is more accurate at OCR. I did not like the fact the program could not be expanded to full screen. It would be nice if the license would allow for installation on all of my computers. The limit of 2 installs is not enough.

Peter Laszlo Presumably I understand the use, but is this a formatted text extracting tool?

Does it only recognise English or German?
Am I right in assuming that the software will not work for example with a PDF document written in Hungarian or using the Russian Cyrilic alphabet?

Will it work in a situation where an English language website does not allow copying of formatted text on the website?

Thanks,

Andreas Stroebel @Peter Laszlo: Text-R supports lots of languages, also such as Russian and Hungarian. You can make a screenshot of the website and then use Text-R to extract the text out of the image.

Robert User In the Fine Print section, this offer has the following statement:
You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards.

I have purchased a lot of software over the years, including over 200 programs on Bitsdujour. As part of the standard license of those programs, I can install them when I choose and I can re-install if I need to.

I also have a lot of "software-of-the-day" programs, and as part of those licenses, they regularly do require that I install the software while the promotion is going on, and I cannot reinstall later on. I consider those software offers differently than the ones I purchase. I get a chance to try the program out for a reasonable time compared to a 30-day trial commonly offered. Many of those programs, I have then purchased to have a regular license.

Until this offer, I have not seen a program offered for purchase that requires the software to be installed/registered while the promotion is active, and cannot be installed afterward.

I have no way of knowing when a calamity might happen that requires me to reinstall my software. Recently, I had the main hard drive and its backup drive go out together. Neither were recoverable. In spite of making regular backups, I had no choice but to start over.

If I were to purchase this program, I would be taking a risk of how long I might be able to use it. That is something I will not support.

If your Fine Print Statement is left over from some previous promotion giveaway, then please remove it.

Gr3gw I've tried the 'trial' version but I can't see

(a) how it handles tables (data that is laid out in tabular form in the PDF document,
(c) how I would save as RTF. It appears to only save as PDF again.

Andreas Stroebel @Robert User: Sorry, this is a left over. The purchased and downloaded full version installer can be used for installation at anytime in the future.

ASCOMP Software GmbH - Apr 9 2020 at 2:51am Copy Link

Andreas Stroebel @Gr3gw Table contents get imported as good as possible. In the save file dialog, you can choose whatever supported file format you want to use in the format list field on bottom of the dialog.

Rohs Does it require a connection to the internet to run its ocr? Can it find words in photographs of items that are not documents. For instance street signs and license plates?

Apr 10 2020 at 10:18am Copy Link

Andreas Stroebel @David User: Text-R does not require an internet connection for the OCR process. It finds text on every kind of image, but it depends on the quality of the source file. You can download a free trial at ascomp.de

Michael R. Is it possible to choose an image which has been copied into the clipboard?
Or to choose a rectangle of the current screen?

Apr 10 2020 at 6:40pm Copy Link

Chris @Michael R.

nope, you have to save a ss and then drag to or open it in the program.

Apr 10 2020 at 6:49pm Copy Link

Michael R. Quite uncomfortable. Will you - the developer - add this clipboard-copy feature in an update? Would not be very hard to implement, would it?

Apr 10 2020 at 7:57pm Copy Link

Andreas Stroebel @Michael R: We just added this feature wish to our database for a future release.

ASCOMP Software GmbH - Apr 11 2020 at 3:48am Copy Link

Rohs Thank you
Very interested in these features as well.
1) Select text on screen and choose (similar to Windows snipping tool) and run OCR on selection (as mentioned by Michael R).
2) Ability to recognize words in images & photos (like street names, licnece plates etc)
3) Batch processing files with some sort of folder monitoring. An files saved to a folder will be automatically ocred and then moved/saved to another folder with ability to make adjustments to name.

Gr3gw I've purchased a license. I would like to see better extraction of tabular data. The document I have at the moment has a large white space between data on the left and data on the right. Text-R sees this table as two distinct objects. It's not easy to reconstruct the table from two objects.

Andreas Stroebel It's made locally, nothing will be uploaded, nothing will leave your computer.

styrobrain The two language options (English, German) denote the language of the user interface or the language the OCR recognizes? Screenshots suggest the OCR recognizes many more languages, but I can't find that explicitly stated anywhere.

Mar 10 2021 at 5:43am Copy Link

Andreas Stroebel Text-R supports several languages for OCR. Available program interface languages are as stated here:

https://www.ascompsoftwar...ab/details

ASCOMP Software GmbH - Mar 10 2021 at 6:03am Copy Link

styrobrain So... what is the difference then? I gave it a try and bought the English version. The installer offered English and German, the UI offers 8 languages, the OCR a lot more. I guess both the English and German link here take you to the same product.

By the way, the shop page also offers a corporate (or commercial or business or whatever) license on sale as well, for five machines install, five concurrent users (instead of two machines install, one concurrent user).

I OCRed a pretty shoddy PDF and found the OCR quality surprisingly decent.

I think I will encounter many occasions when Text-R suffices and I can leave the FineReaders and OmniPages and even PDF-XChanges (now Abbyy-powered) in the garage. Thanks Andreas Stroebel and BitsDuJour :-)
