Tom Colvin I've been a long-time user of TextAloud 2. It is absolutely the best of its class. Moreover, customer support could not be better. Ken is very attentive and will personally see to it that any problems you have with the software will be quickly resolved. {Hey, Ken, I'm the guy from Winston that lives in Manila!]

I do have a quest6ion: What is new in version 3? I couldn't find an answer of your website. Is it really worth the upgrade? I'm happy with version 2.0 and can't think of what else I might need from the software.

Mary Wilson Unlike the person above, I think that customer service is horrible. For the last week, I have been e-mailing the company trying to get a error corrected and no one has answered any of my e-mails. Due to my computer crashing, I had to upgrade as I can no longer download version 2.0 . My backup of the voices was fine, but my copy of TextAloud 2.0 was not. I e-mailed the company twice looking for information on how to upgrade to version 3.0. It took some time, but I finally found a link on the websight that allowed me to upgrade the program. Company never answered original e-mails. After loading the program, I found that it comes with 10 L&H voices that do not work. E-mailed both customer service and the address for reporting errors that I have a "OL error 80004005". Still no answer from the company on the e-mails regarding the software problem error. Went to the help section, Fequently asked questions and user support formula hoping that I could find or get some help fixing the problem. There was no real information on the error that was helpful in solving my problem. Thought about trying to delete the voices out of the system that are causing the error, but they have nothing on this in the help sections either.

As of today's date, I still have had no e-mails from the company on solving the problem. Tried to log into the user forum but you have to sign up and they to approve you to get in. Still, they have not sent me permission to log in so I can try either to get the voices to work properly or to delete them out of the program. Hopefully by posting this problem with the software it will allow the company to address the OLÉ problem so that none of you will go threw the same problem (headaches) that I am going threw right now as I try to get this problem fixed from a customer support department that does not wish to answer any e-mails. I only started the up-graded process a little over a week ago. No e-mails for solving my problems and access to the user forum but they did e-mail me my registration code for Text Aloud 3.0 and my new voices after purchases.

Louis H I had completely forgotten about this program.

I used TextAloudMP3 back in 2001 and for some reason never installed it when I upgraded my system some years ago. Then in 2004, after failing to find my original registration code I wrote Ken and even though three years had passed he responded quickly and gave me access to the program and my original registration code. The really impressive thing was that I had gotten the program as a free bonus for signing up with Real One (that was in 2001) but Ken still had the info on file.

I went back this evening and found the email from back then (yes - I save all old emails of note) to verify my memory. So I believe Ken's commitment to customer support is something that has been around for quite some time!

Not sure I would use this a lot today, but I may go ahead and upgrade to the current version anyway.

Chad Biggerstaff I like a few of the Ivona voices (some are much better than others) and (in past with trial ta download) they worked fine with Textaloud. You can try the voices on Ivona's site for free with your own text. FYI Ivona's web reading integration is not very good (easier to copy/paste), will have to see how TextAloud is working (last trial run was several months ago).
Just downloaded latest demo and tested with Firefox 5, it works well. It would be nice if it was better at auto figuring where to start but it's easy to highlight where to start and click speak. Also would be nice if it was better at detecting tweet, facebook, video links html and not read them (lots of gaming and gadget sites I visit have videos in middle of text). All told though it works better than other text to speech browser options I've played with. Got my purchase. Thank you BDJ and TextAloud. Oh yeah and this newest version is still working fine with my purchased Ivona voice.

K X Goran, If you click on the Buy Now button, you see there is a deal for a couple of voices which you can add to the order. With any add-on voices, definitely "try before you buy", i.e. listen to samples, because everyone has personal likes/dislikes of certain voices and you shouldn't buy a voice you're not going to enjoy listening to.

I know that even when programs return to Bits, sometimes the specifics of the deals can change.

When I bought TextAloud here last fall, I also purchased a discounted bundle with four Acapela UK voices (which I really like) which are not available as part of this sale.

On the other hand, I think that TextAloud was discounted 33%, when I bought it, while today it's 50% off, which is a great deal on an excellent program.

TextAloud was my first experience using any text-to-speech software. I now also use the speed reading programs Ace Reader Pro Deluxe and The Reader's Edge.which also have options for TTS.

My current personal recommendation/preference is for voices which are not tied exclusively to use only with TextAloud, but which can be used in any TTS-capable program on your PC.

Rudy Houghton How many voices come with the purchased version? The free trial comes with 1 voice and that is awful. There is an offer for some two voice upgrade packages, but no mention of what actually comes with the program when you buy just that. This info would be very useful in helping one decide whether or not extra premium voices will be NECESSARY. As mentioned, the one that comes with the Trial package is useless and if that is all that comes with the Purchased program, it, alone is pretty much useless as well, unless prepared to shell out more money for extra voices.

Sep 2 2011 at 8:03am Copy Link

0

Ulrich There appear to be no voices shipping with TextAloud. What you see in the trial are the voices that were detected on your computer. You should find at least one voice, as part of the Windows operating system - Microsoft Sam, Anna, Michael, Michelle, depending on your Windows version or installed Office.
If you plan to buy TextAloud, I recommend the Acapela voice bundle they offer (Heather and Ryan), as they sound much better than the AT&T pack (Crystal and Mike). I regret that I paid for these - the samples on the web site did not sound too bad, but they are way worse than Acapela.

Sep 2 2011 at 8:28am Copy Link

0

K X I think that's right, that it doesn't come with voices and you have to use the ones installed by Windows (which are pretty unpleasant), or buy and install your own. I also prefer the Heather/Ryan voices over Crystal/Mike.

disenchanted It seems that every time a program like this is offered, people are always asking about voices.

I have heard that there are programs and/or software development kits that lets anyone create their own voices to use with programs like Textaloud.

So if you have any family or friends with a great speaking voice then you might be able to create your own voices.

I'm sure that a TTS software business like yours probably knows of most every possible do-it-yourself type TTS/SAPI creation software application or SDK in existence.

Questions:

1. Can you recommend any do-it-yourself voice creation applications? Free or paid.

2. Can you offer any insight into such programs?

3. Are they easy to use or would it end up being a project that requires a lot of time to complete a working TTS voice?
(meaning it's more economical to just buy voices)

Thanks in advance for your time.

Software Guy I often convert books and articles to document format then to speech. And voices remain a major problem. Personally I recommend Ivona voices and they have family pack licenses but they are expensive. These are the most natural sounding voices, particularly for extended listening. Check them here http://www.ivona.com/us/voices/ Other more computer sounding voices get difficult to take, especially for extended listening. So the ivona voices are a good investment if you go this route
.
The advantagesof TTS are many - you can listen to books and articles while doing other tasks or driving to work.. And as you may already know the selection on audible is somewhat limited. However there are a good number of classics available in the public domain. But if you want to listen to those specialized non-fiction texts, then likely you will need to scan, convert to doc by OCR, edit in word to ebook format then convert to speech. This is a complex set of tasks and is time consuming. Only one commercial set up is available and that is the plustek v100 scanner system. Another alternative is theplustek opticbook series of special book scanners which use special software to image and flip pages.
The opticbook series makes book scanning easy - but it is time consuming. The software includes a special version of abbyy finereader - recommended for OCR. From the document text file, the book is lightly edited for voice (page headers are removed) and converted to speech by a reader like textaloud. The choice of voice is critical in this step. The resulting audio files can them be listened todirectly (an area where textaloud excels) or saved for use on your mp3/ipod.
If you have a visually impaired family member, TTS software is critical.
I do use TextAloud along with several other TTS programs and can recommend it. When I had questions in the past the developer was top notch in responses. And the license is for family so that you can install on all of your computers.
This type of program is very useful for those busy people that simply do not have the available time to sit and read. It allows you to stay up on articles and books in your field of expertise that you would not have the time to read. And it is just great for entertainment - get one of the many free books online and listen on your mp3 player.

SoftCollector Dear Vendor,

1. I can see on NextUp.com that voices from different vendors are offered (Acapela, RealSpeak, Cepstral, AT&T). Are all of them compatible with TextAloud 3?
2. A quick check shows that Acapela and RealSpeak voices are 22 kHz, while AT&T Natural Voices (I assume that 'Julia' offered here is one of those) are 16 kHz, so a 'lower quality' voice is offered with the purchase. How important is the difference, and are any 22 kHz voices offered with this purchase (for an additional charge)?
3. Since the policy states that "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version" – when is the next major version due? What will be the price of the upgrade to said next major version?

Kind Regards,

Rick Ellis Hi SC,

The voices sold on our website by AT&T Natural Voices, Acapela, Nuance RealSpeak and Cepstral are all compatible with TextAloud 3.

The kHz rate does not necessarily indicate the quality of the voice, especially when compared between different voice companies. As to the importance of the difference in voice quality, it can be quite subjective. The voice pages on our website have audio samples and also links to online demos where you can hear some of your own text read.

Upgrades for TextAloud are free within a version. We have not announced any time frame for TextAloud 4. We give a 6 month window of free upgrades around a new release so that those purchasing in the months leading up to the new release do not immediately need to consider a paid upgrade. The most recent upgrade was $19.95 to previous buyers while new buyers pay $29.95.

Thanks for your questions.

Rick Ellis Hi Franz,

The user interface for TextAloud is always in English, but you can purchase optional voices that will read text in other languages. You can purchase only TextAloud at the discounted offer, then if you want Italian voice(s) you can purchase that separately as explained at

http://nextup.com/taitalian.html

That will be a separate purchase and it will cost you $35 or $45 for each Italian voice depending on which you purchase. If you purchase TextAloud through the Bits offer, then you do not need to purchase it again if you also buy optional voices.

Hopefully TextAloud is not too complicated, but we do have a video tutorial on Getting Started with TextAloud and also more tutorial videos at

I'm checking on what might have been the issue with the purchase page, but glad to hear you got your order placed okay. My first advice in a case like this would be to close all browser sessions before trying again. Thanks for your patience there.

If I can locate your order from SC then I will reply via email about the invoice. Issues like that can always be handled promptly via email to support

nextup.com.

You are correct about the Ivana voices working with TextAloud so I will include that from our forums...TextAloud is 32 bit and supports only 32 bit voices. I think the Ivona voice installs include both 32 bit and 64 bit versions, so those voices should work with 32 bit apps like TextAloud as well as any 64 bit TTS apps you have.

Thanks!

Rick

Rick Ellis Hi Edward,

That is TextAloud only and does not install any voices. Had you purchased only TextAloud, the voice(s) available would have been the Microsoft voice(s) resident in Windows. I am replying via email with specific instructions on your download and registration details.

Thanks for your order!

Roger Osborne I should like to purchase this offer but I will wait to see if the issue experienced by SC above, is resolved.

Can support clarify the degree and quality of editing the speech for subsequent recording? For instance, can the pitch be changed whilst not altering the speed. Can tags be used to insert special effects like coughing or laughing?

Thanks - Roger

Roger Osborne Seems my post of a few hours ago has not been validated by BDJ. That's a pity because I asked a couple of valid questions. Here's another couple. Having decided to order, I went through the process and was taken to a site which would process the order in £££s which is OK since I am in the UK. I was invited to accept voice upgrades but these were all US voices. It would be nice to be offered UK voices as an offer upgrade. Also, I was invited to purchase a whole house upgrade but I thought the licence entitled an installation on two machines. Can this be clarified - and hopefully my post will be made public by BDJ before the close of the offer.

Thanks - Roger

Rick Ellis Hi Roger,

I checked with FastSpring (handles the order fulfillment) and there is not a known issue with Chrome or other major browsers. See my comments above in the reply to Toni's post about closing all browser sessions to potentially clear a cached page.

The speed can be changed, but there is no adjustment for pitch.

Thanks,

Rick

Amit 1)
Policy states -
"TextAloud 3 is licensed for family use, so everyone in a household can use the software."

Does this policy holds true only for bitsdujour customers buying today, or it remains the same if buying from nextup.com, later too ?

2)
How many licenses total to buy if one wants to use it in home + And his family member wants to use it on his business network - of 5-10 computers ?

3)
Can textaloud be scheduled to automatically start reading a site's contents at say a certain time - or we have to open that site first by ourselves then tell textaloud to read it.
Or can i just schedule or automate textaloud in any way to start reading contents of any particular site / file without myself to do the whole process each time ?

Thanks.

Rick Ellis The policy stated holds true for this BitsDuJour offer so if you purchase through the discount link then you can ignore the whole house license.

For this promotion, the voices do not include any other than shown on the special offer order pages linked from BitsDuJour.

For the business network of 5-10 computers, email us about that to my attention at support @ nextup.com.

The regular version of TextAloud does not include anything like automatic scheduling. We do have separate command line/api versions for sale but that is not part of this offer so if interested, contact me through the support email.

Thanks,

Rick

Kevin User I have several 3rd party voices already installed. I have downloaded the trial version but do not see any voices other than MS Anna. Is there a way to have TextAloud 3 use the already installed voices? I have NeoVoice Paul and NeoVoice Kate. I have tried reinstalling the voices, but they still do not show up in TextAloud 3.

Rick Ellis HI Roger,

TextAloud 3 offers pitch adjustment in the voices that support it. For example, MS Anna. I meant no adjustable pitch in the AT&T, Acapela or Nuance voices if those are purchased.

Yes on the laptop and main PC.

Rick

Rick Ellis Hi Kevin,

At one time we offered NeoSpeech voices, but they went in a different direction. At that time NeoSpeech voices were Sapi5 voices. If you open TextAloud then click Tools-Speech and Audio-Voice Options then there under Voice Preferences there is a Sapi Version setting where I think the default is both Sapi4 and Sapi5 voices. I do not know if NeoSpeech now ties their voices to a particular reader so I am not sure, but if you have Sapi5 or both for that setting and don't see the NeoSpeech voices available (good idea to completely exit TextAloud from File-Exit TextAloud, then restart) then the ones you have likely will not work in TextAloud.

Thanks,

Rick

Matt I purchased TextAloud in early 2001.

It is, without any doubt, the best piece of software that I've ever had on any of my computers. I've used TextAloud almost every day for the past eleven years. I mainly use TextAloud to read Amazon Customer Reviews directly from Firefox. I also have it read pdf and epub ebooks, email, forums, and the conversations here at BDJ.

The customer/tech support is the very best!

Thank you, Rick!

K X I like using TextAloud for taking documents and converting them to mp3 to listen to and learn on my mp3 player. I also use it for reading aloud text in foreign languages. It's also helpful for writers, letting the program read your drafts aloud in different voices.

Many more uses are listed on the website.

When proofing and you need to stop to make a correction and then begin again, try this. Stop the speaking, then after making the correction, move the cursor to where you want to resume, right click your mouse and choose Speak From Cursor Aloud.

Also, many of you may find it helpful to check out some of our video demonstrations at

Major upgrades are not free, but previous TextAloud buyers can purchase at a discount from the regular $29.95 price. However, it's not as low as the discount price offered during a Bits promotion so you may want to go that route and just purchase TextAloud 3 that way. For upgrade purchases, send email to support

W Ma I notice Nuance has Asian voices (i.e. Mandarin, Japanese) for scripts in TextAloud. What Chinese scripts would TextAloud be able to read? Characters? Pinyin? other? Or, what Japanese scripts?

Feb 4 2013 at 12:43pm Copy Link

0

Rick Ellis W Ma,

For Nuance Chinese voices, Sin-Ji and Ya-Ling both work with Traditional Chinese only. We think Mei-Ling will handle both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

For Japanese, Kyoko should handle Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana but we do not have much feedback on this voice as far as any problems related to specific scripts.

We don't think the voices work with Pinyin / romanized scripts.

Rick

TextAloud 3 uses Sapi4/Sapi5 for the voice interface. I do not know if it will work with Ivona voices, but if it does, it will work in the free trial of TextAloud 3 (assuming you already have an Ivona voice). TextAloud 3 may work with some other voices, but we can only promise it will work with the voices we offer optional for purchase through NextUp. Some of these are 22kHz, but again, they are voices we offer.

Yfor I bought this from the previous offer and I am very satisfied with the product itself. Runs under Windows 8 flawlessly. A word of warning though: I found however that the Julia voice bundle is a waste of money and time, since the voicing is sub-par when compared to the native voices included with Windows 8: the simplest of words (such as "the") come out unintelligible and "she" can't even pronounce "AT&T" nearly correctly - you would think that they would have at least fixed this one ;-).

SKY @ Constantin Florea
Thank you for the reply and for going after them on my behalf, but what I do not understand is, why, while approving them, you do not post my three comments (or any of them) here, so people can understand what my issue is and maybe be warned, which would save them the headache I am having and save them money, too. I think this is unfair to me and to all your followers. If you are protecting a fraudulent company, let us know, if not, please SHOW my previous comments. Thank you!

SKY 7 hours ago, I purchased this product and while the billing process started with the discounted amount, at the end somehow I got charged for the full amount of the software. I complained bot to the billing company and the vendor, immediately, with screenshots and all but until now no reply from either of them. If they do not refund me the difference or the total asap,I am calling this company a fraud! Do not buy!

Constantin Florea @Serhan K. Yasar - There is indeed an issue with today's deal in the sense that in some cases if you go to the product page and then press the Get This deal button on this page then you will be charged the full price. However if you clear your browser cache and cookies and then browse to this promotion page and press the Get This Deal button then the correct discounted price will be applied to the purchase. I have contacted the vendor about your request to refund you the amount you paid extra and I am sure he will respond to the request.

SKY @Rick Ellis - Ok, I did not want to occupy so much real eastate with this issue, but you deserve a reply. It was early morning here, I hadn't slept yet, decided to catch the offer before it was expired in 2 hours (as I see today, all my effort was in vain), was going to sleep for a few hours before my appointment at 10 am and then this thing happened. I might have acted too strongly, but this issue robbed me of the couple of hours sleep (writing back & forth) which was all I had time for for the day and I was more angry about that than the double charging. And if I knew that the offer would be extended, I could have acted more calmly, too. All in all, unfortunate string of events, and I appreciate YOUR taking care of the matter professionally and swiftly but you should really fix that bug with the cache issue to save others a similar headache, at least. And I hope admin here will delete all my comments about this issue now since no reason for them to remain in this thread forever. Regards,
SKY

J Hello,

This is really great software! I think it is the best for Text-to-Speech.

I've had it since version 1, and have been using it daily for over 15 years!

I play audio throughout my home and have TextAloud (using their Firefox plugin) read Amazon reviews, forums and web articles.

I also have it read kindle books converted to pdf, other files and on and on.

It really saves the eyes! It is also great for proofreading!

It is constantly being updated and has great support.

There is also a TextAloud iPad app.

Thank you NextUp!

Sep 29 2016 at 12:03pm Copy Link

0

Rick Ellis Hi Paul,

Commercial licensing is needed if you want to use any of the optional voices for commercial use and/or any publication of distribution of audio. It's not inexpensive and I think it's usually cost prohibitive for YouTube or Music unless you're already generating significant revenues. The voice companies quote commercial pricing so if you're interested email support

nextup.com mentioning the voice(s) you might need and describe the intended use.

Rick

The user interface is always in English, but we do have optional German voices that are sold separately as explained on our NextUp.com homepage. If you purchase TextAloud 3 though this promotional offer, then you could go to our website to make a separate purchase of German voice(s) that would then allow TextAloud 3 to read German language text (there is no translation).

Our upgrade policy is that if you purchase TextAloud within 6 months of a major upgrade, there will be no charge for the upgrade.

Kelly Hamblin My email frustration came after the Voice emails when I was trying to purchase the application. Was it my email that was at fault? They swear they are innocent, but who knows.

My question today is: I installed my old version of Text Aloud, along with the voices, on my newer computer. Can I install this newer version over the top of my current 2.31 version without causing problems with the voices, or do I have to uninstall first?

May 11 2017 at 6:16am Copy Link

Rick Ellis Kelly,

It sounds like you did receive our emails and were able to install your previously purchased software so that is good.

Yes, you should be able to install the newer TextAloud 3 over the top of your earlier version 2.31 without causing problems with the voices. However, if you do that but decide not to purchase TextAloud 3 and want to go back to TextAloud 2, you would need to uninstall TextAloud 3 before reinstalling TextAloud 2.

2. Do the voice packages have updates or are one time work forever deal?
3. What is the difference if any ( other than the voice character-chroma) of the different voice vendors?
4. I will be interested to get an international voice pack. Do these also come with a 30 day policy? Are there any trial options for the voice packs?
5. How well the international voices work? Should I expect less than the English ones?

Thanks for your help.

2. We don't promise the voices will "work forever" but we've been selling quality third party voices for years and we've been able to keep them working through OS updates/etc.

4. Yes on 30 day MBG. No trials.

Rick Ellis When purchasing only TextAloud 4 (with no optional voices), it uses a resident text to speech voice on your Windows PC. This can vary a little depending on what Windows operating system is on your PC. An easy way to find out is to download the TextAloud 4 free trial from our website (nextup.com) then check to see what voice(s) are available on your PC. That will show you what you'd have if you don't purchase any optional voices. Optional voices are available for separate purchase on our website, priced at $35 to $45 each when purchased individually.

Rick Ellis Yes, Kelly, the icons can be made small in TextAloud 4 from the View->Main Toolbar Options and View->Article Toolbar options. Support for Theming is much improved over the previous skins in TextAloud. It is accessed by View->Themes. More information at https://nextup.com/TextAl...tsnew.html. Also maybe check out some simple videos at https://nextup.com/videos.html. The Interface can be set up with tabs like in TextAloud 3 if you like that better than having the article list on the left.

Joe Twomey @Cary Adams, re: Text Aloud vs. Natural Reader.

I'm new to these, thanks for cluing me in to Natural Reader, which offers a Chrome extension.

It seems one difference is Text Aloud 4 has the download-to-audio-file feature included in the $17.47 price, while Natural Reader requires the $99 or greater price for that feature.

Joe Twomey I'm confused about licensing. The question response above between Matt and Rick about licensed use on a destop and laptop, namely,

"Matt Hello,

Can one license be activated on both a desktop and a laptop at the same time?

Thanks.

Rick Ellis Yes, thanks."

contradicts the Fine Print:

"TextAloud 4 is licensed per computer, and not per user."

Joe Twomey FYI, Text Aloud 4 from the link Rick provided above installs fine over Text Aloud 3 (which we installed from the "Download Trial" link above that's just to the left and below the big green "GET THIS DEAL" button). It requires a restart of the PC. Much different-looking UI in 4.

Thanks Rick, for clarifying the license as being per user, not per PC. Good deal, thanks, buying especially for the download to MP3 file option.

Final question: How do I get the $17.47 price? I clicked both of the "GET THIS DEAL" buttons (one above and one directly below the comments), and it sends me to a page that has the regular price. Continuing to the next page it's still the regular price, but it has a place to enter a coupon, but I'm not able to find one.

Aug 27 2019 at 3:54pm Copy Link

0

Rick Ellis Hi CJ,

It depends on the PDF, but for many PDF files that are accessible you can open them directly in TextAloud from the File Menu (File->Open File) where you can choose file type PDF. There are other ways to convert your document into something accessible. For example, Adobe has a free app that converts scanned text into a readable PDF via online. That is from an image not PDF file, but there are often ways to get at text you really need for personal use.

bvssunnydale Hi, I started to purchase and there's a "AT&T Natural Voices Engine" add-in offered. I'm wondering what the difference is and what this adds to TextAloud? Thanks very much.

Aug 29 2019 at 6:03am Copy Link

0

bvssunnydale Hi, follow-up question, does the AT&T add-in offered include only the 'Crystal' and 'Mike' voices, or all the voices that are demo'ed on your site? Also, are there additional voices available via open source or thru the TextAloud site? I'm asking now because the pricing seems a little lower with TextAloud than if purchased separately. Thanks very much.

Aug 29 2019 at 6:11am Copy Link

0

Rick Ellis When purchasing only TextAloud, it uses Windows text to speech voice(s) already present on your PC. The exact voice or voices can vary depending on what version of Windows you have installed. The AT&T Natural Voices Mike and Crystal are optional voices that we offer on our website and as you noted buyers can choose to add them when purchasing TextAloud. If you want to see what Microsoft voices will be used on your PC, you can download the free trial of TextAloud and they will be available. The AT&T voices are not in the trial. We've sold the AT&T voices for years and most people find they enhance using TextAloud and they are attractively priced in the bundle offer.

bvssunnydale Hi, I downloaded the trail and it seems like a fine program. The "Fine Print" says the license if by-computer but doesn't mention if you can transfer from one computer to another (as a tech it's not unusual to go through half a dozen computers a year).

When purchasing only TextAloud 4 with no optional voices, it uses the resident Windows system voice that also works in the trial. The voice in your Windows system may vary depending on your market, but if you want you can go to nextup.com, download the free trial and see what voice it uses.

brenda adams I've been using TA for many years (over 10, I think). I love the program. I love NextUp's customer service. I have found so many uses for the program and I use it repeatedly daily. I feel very comfortable saying: worry not! This is NOT an unscrupulous/fraudulent outfit. NextUp is first class in product and in service.

A coupla ways I use it or things I like about it (besides the great cust service):

Free program 'Calibre' lets us copy text out of ebooks. Paste into Text Aloud window and you have an audible book.

Grab recipes online - it self labels and stores any text, WITHOUT you have to stop and do a 'save'...

It automatically creates a list of titles of all the things I've copied or pasted into it. This list is sortable by dragging. I can right-click and change any titles that I might word better than the auto-label TA has given it (it titles from first line of text automatically).

It underscores misspelled words. I use it to type into OR to grab from text I've highlight in some other program. A tiny window asks me if I want to start a NEW item in my list of items OR append to the current one I've already started. (This is such a wonderful feature.)

It does NOT grab/store/save anything I put in my clipboard; ONLY the things I want kept (I press a button in that little window I mentioned).

I've yet to learn the capacity for things it will store. Seems to go on forever. (There is an option to take titles OUT of storage and save them to your computer for keeps OR to swoop in and save them ALL in one action. I seldom do either of these...I just keep storing and it just keeps adding another document to the set it is storing for me...as mentioned, all titled and clickable at side of the screen/window.)

There is so much to TextAloud. I would never want to not have it. I am not affiliated with TA nor Bits du Jour. I just dearly like both of them. Have fun!

(And I bought it for under $50 - it still seems to cost what I bought it for years ago.) Mine was the best money could buy (I bought--Ivona Salli). Are the free Windows voices all that bad? Back when I didn't have those, I had to buy a good one because the standard ones sounded like robots. I think things have improved since then. (10 to 20 years ago I'm talking...)

P User Hi NextUp,

i would like to know what is the maximum size of text file can be converted?

I would ideally have some of my ebooks converted so that I can listen to the audio file. I am assuming that the exported audio file could also have text read out at a high absolute speed.

Thank you

Apr 13 2021 at 7:31am Copy Link

1

Rick Ellis We don't know of any hard limit as to the maximum size of text file can be converted.

When dealing with your ebooks and concerned about size, you can use the built-in File Splitter to split the audio by chapter. The file splitter can split the ebook into multiple articles, and you can also split into text files that you can load into the Batch File Converter The Batch File Converter never has more than one chapter loaded into memory at a time.

There is a free trial that you can download from nextup.com to see how it works with your text. Support is by email to support

When purchasing only TextAloud 4 with no optional voices, it uses the Windows text to speech voice(s) already resident on your Windows PC. brenda adams As I have mentioned, I am crazy about Text Aloud and I use it daily (since almost the beginning of it). THIS IS A STEAL.
One use, besides the fact that it reads text aloud to you, is that the program itself can be set to act like a clipboard collector. If you have Text Aloud open, then you can have it collect and instantly save text on its own screen (later, if you like, you can tell it to save to your computer files, any or all). I love that it lets me instantly keep either as a NEW item or to APPEND to an already existing save.
It has a cool Search feature, too.
I keep hundreds of items in Text Aloud. I grab stuff constantly to it. It has a wonderful edit window, and underlines mis-spelled words.
I use it for grabbing URLS, notes to myself, book reviews, any text I want that might be tiny or long and I'm too lazy to read it to myself, anything I want to store prior to putting into a text editor, recipes, webpage sections, emails to me that are too long to read...I let it read them aloud to me. I copy out pages of ebooks and let them read aloud to me. I could go on and on and on and on.
THIS PROGRAM IS FAR TO GOOD FOR THE MONEY!!! I tell everybody I meet up with. I think it's one of the best things I've ever found for my computer (in 25 years of buying lots and trying lots of software). LOVE THE SERVICE, TOO. Best I'ver EVER seen.

brenda adams Rick: I use your program daily...it even beats most of my note grabbing/keeping organizers. I turn to Text Aloud constantly to view notes I've grabbed to it.

Question: is there a way to reorganize the icons at the top... I'm not much of a shortcut user, but I do use those icons at the top of TA's screen. I would like to move the SPEAK icon over to the right more. I looked and didn't find a way to move toolbar icons around.

Thanks for always being there and for the wonderful work you've always done with Text Aloud. This price today is less than I paid by far and is a steal!

Rick Ellis Brenda,

You can right click the toolbar to hide or display individual buttons but there is not a way to reorder them. Thanks for using TextAloud, we appreciate it!

Brenda Adams I cannot computer LIVE without this software. The sale price is great. There is more to this software then, at first, meets the eye. I don't just use it for reading test aloud, which I love. But I also use it for grabbing cuts and copies of anything I choose. It holds the documents, in searchable files, until I decide if I want to delete, edit, save, etc. I love that it never requires me to Save. I just slap and go. I keep a ton of 'files' in it, ready to be used, copied, saved at any time. I don't think the company touts any of these uses, but I have found them indispensable. I use the voice read backs, talking feature, to help with editing and proof reading. It's amazing what you can catch with your hearing that you do not always catch with your eyeballs. AND, sometimes my eyes are tired and I just don't feel like reading, so I let the software read my emails and articles to me. LOVE LOVE LOVE

riad af Hello.
1. Does textaloud 4 support hebrew text to speech?
2. Regarding acapela voices purchased in the past using textaloud 3, will they be available inside textaloud 4 ?

Feb 11 2022 at 2:02am Copy Link

Rick Ellis We sell the Cerence Carmit Hebrew Female voice. You can find it from the Cerence link on our homepage.

I do not know of any issues with Acapela voices purchased from NextUp working in TextAloud 4. If you run into any problems, send email to support

nextup.com for assistance.

Kelly Hamblin I say this or something similar every time I see this lovely bit of software for sale on BITS. This is the best of its kind, and I've tried them all. Anyone looking for a text to voice app cannot do better than to purchase this one.

I do wish there were sales on voices more often. Voices are expensive - not the just ones that can be bought from NextUp, but all voices. I was disappointed with the last one I purchased, and its not like they can be exchanged.

Kelly Hamblin @ Rick Ellis - Yes, you are competitive. Voices are expensive everywhere. I would only buy them from NextUp.

Rod User Love textaloud, paid full price for it and use it everyday! That said I think the voices are a slime move by the company because they lock them to textaloud whereas voices you by from other vendors work everywhere.

The voice lock-in gives me mixed feelings because I think that tactic is a complete and utter slime move, but textaloud itself is THE best text to speech program there is, that I know of, and I have spent hundreds of hours looking through every possible option.

The reason I think it so slimly? Because disabled people often need voices to work with more than one text to speech program, Textaloud is great! BUT it's not a good all-in-one tool for disabled people, it's a piece in the puzzle for dealing with your disability, which forces them to need to buy voices in more than one place and use different voices since the best voices on textaloud are vender exclusives that you can't buy anywhere else.

Feb 11 2022 at 10:34am Copy Link

Rod User Also their locked in cerence voices actually prevent users from being able to use paid for nuance voices which causes even more trouble for disabled people.

Again I really like textaloud, but the way the voices are handled is quite mean spirited towards disabled people, especially since they don't offer any real voice discounts to disabled people to make up for these harmful tactics.

Rick Ellis I'm sorry you view it as you do, but the voice companies control how their technology is licensed. When voices are locked to TextAloud, it is because that is a requirement for us to be able to license them. We are clear about such things on our website, and our support will help if someone purchases the wrong product.

Rod User Alright, I'm reasonable, go ahead and post a link to the license agreements that requires you to do so, since that would be true transparency.

Janos User I can't see any reference to the languages that may be used with the software

Aug 10 2022 at 3:22am Copy Link

Rick Ellis The user interface for TextAloud 4 is always in English, but we do sell optional voices in a variety of languages. Voices are specific to a language and there is no translation, meaning, for example, a French voice would read French language text. When purchasing TextAloud 4 with no optional voices, it uses Text to Speech voice(s) in your Windows operating system, which can vary depending on your Windows version and where you are located. There is a free trial link on this BitsDuJour page so you can try TextAloud 4 and see what voice(s) are accessible on your Windows PC.

This 50% off deal is for TextAloud 4. There is an offer to add optional US English voices by AT&T and Acapela, but if other languages are needed they can be purchased separately from NextUp.

Rod User Great software, love it and use it all the time.... hasn't had a major update in a long time though, and same goes for the voices. The available voices for it are starting to feel pretty dated compared to all the new cool AI voices and Microsoft new Natural voices that are exclusively for narrator.

As tech aloud is—the consumer focused TTS software I really hope they are working on in the background and will bring us a great version 5 with some AI tech soon.

P/s best voices right now IMO and that I know of that work with textaloud:
- Cerence Zoe Conventional and Lee - bought through textaloud's website
- CereVoice Jess, Kirsty, and Megan - bought through Cerevoices website
- Ivona Sali and Raveena - bought on the harposoftware website

P/s/s
Also most voices sound much better with lower quality headphones rather than on high end speakers. High end speakers will bring out the roboticness. I mostly use Bone Conduction headsets because they provide the perfect naturally low quality sound output needed to bring out the best in non-AI TTS voices. I'd recommend a pair but my current ones are discontinued... but there's lots of options out there and I doubt the technologies actually improved.

Brenda Adams I am always raving about TextAloud and you can see my earlier ravings if you care to...but I think this is one of the best softwares I have ever purchased since I began computering back in '96. I use it daily. I collect all my stuff in its--hmm, not sure what they are called. Files? Well, yes. But they are not SAVED files. Yet. They are just there when I want to look through them. Or listen to them. Or edit them and then, copy and paste into some other program I use. I can use the program to read things aloud to me...I do that a whole bunch. I do grab ebooks and then copy them into text aloud...sometimes just parts of the book that I want to hear right away. I often copy or scan recipes and let text aloud store them until I get around to editing and pasting them into my recipe software or email.
I often use a page (?) in it to save websites I want to keep, links to them. I am into art and use TextAloud to copy lists and things provided at YouTube art instruction sites. I CAN save-as and store any page/file to my computer. Most often I just copy and paste out of TextAloud and into someplace...like places where I keep all my Art info. I just keep creating New pages in TextAloud and let it capture all I want on that one page, then I tell it to start a new page...when I want to add different things to my stuff stored there in Text Aloud. IT IS SO HARD TO EXPLAIN ALL THE STUFF THAT TEXTALOUD CAN BE USED FOR. But, one thing for sure I can say is that you are wasting your money if you buy some kind of program that captures your text for you...because TA does that TOO...but so much more. IT TALKS WHAT YOU HAVE ONE THE PAGE (no matter how you got it there). THIS DEAL IS A STEAL. THIS IS ONE YOU SHOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IF YOU USE YOUR COMPUTER VERY MUCH AT ALL.

Brenda Adams Forgot to add that if you ever need to PROOF READ, TextAloud is sooooo great for that. It reads aloud and you can HEAR goof ups, I think, better than your eyes often see them!
And it's fun to hear your own writing read by someone else. :) I often have it read scanned or typed recipes back to me as I read along in the cookbook or magazine. It catches things I miss and I get a chance to fix any errors before I publish or share or store in my recipe software. (Nothing worse than a great recipe that leaves out or messes up important information.) I LOVE TEXTALOUD!!

Philippe Yeung Hi will it be able to read PDF directly! Can I import PDF file in the app

Nov 21 2023 at 3:56am Copy Link

Rick Ellis Most PDF files can be imported into TextAloud directly via File->Open, select PDF Files from the dropdown list and browse for your fie. The exception to this are files that have strong copy protection or Digital Rights Management (DRM) turned on by their authors. There are sometimes other options for dealing with these files, so if you have trouble, contact our support via email to support
