Matt Hi James,

When was version 3.0 released and when might you expect to release version 4?

Also, do you have a change log or history page on your website?

Thank you.

Petr Please clarify if this works with Word, Excel and PDF files?
Also, on Windows, does it build its own index or use the already present index?

Version 4 won't be along for at least a year. Version 3 has had several updates and more are planned - it was released Oct 2014

No, it works with ANSI and Unicode text files as used by programmers, developers, etc. It's not a file indexer.

Robin User If it can't be used for office documents then what is the usage anyway? Programmers usually have find and replace functionality (even over files) in their IDEs. Even the free Notepad++ can do it. So what makes TextCrawler the better choice?
Apr 9 2015 at 4:15am Copy Link
0
James Roberts @Robin User: It has a lot of extra, fine-grained functionality. Also batch processing is a biggie. Not to mention regular expression testing and libraries.

Tomasz Lisowski Does the software support any kind of integration with the version control systems? It could be achieved e.g. by allowing a user-defined action to be executed on the file before it is opened for modification. Then, we could set up an action checking the file out from the repository :)

Of course, the action should be executed only if the file IS actually going to be changed. We don't want unnecessary checkouts ...

Can you say when the current version 3.0.5 was released and how many releases per year you typically release?

Thank you.

Robert User @Developer,
Some users think that if I have an XP based computer, that I do not have anything else, so they suggest I upgrade. Sorry, I already have.

I have computers running XP through Windows 10, some to test programs I develop and some to use for the programs installed on the computer. As a software developer, I honor software licenses of other companies. As a result, I have some software that I cannot move to a newer OS computer. Having been a developer for a long time, I have a lot of software installed on a safe (non-exposed) XP OS computer. I am not concerned about the OS being supported or not due to any reasons Microsoft purports; it isn't in any danger since it is isolated, and well protected. I can easily replace the OS disk image if I were to have an issue. I am not concerned about other users worrying about me or asking me why am I using a non-supported computer.

Since legally, I cannot move some of the software off of the XP computer, I continue to use it for what it has. I add new software programs to the XP computer when needed. Therefore, support for XP by other developers is a thing I greatly respect. Many of the offerings we get here at Bitsdujour support the XP OS, simply because there is no reason not to. The more operating systems they support, the more possible customers.

On my Windows 7 and 10 OS computers, I have good programs to handle my search and replace needs. I purchased TextCrawler Pro when it was offered here in April of 2015 to install on an XP computer, because I needed a good search/replace program for that computer. The TextCrawler Pro version purchased was 3.0.4. Part of the purchase decision was that the updates were included for minor versions (up to 4.0), and also because the purchased version number was near the start of major version number 3.0, which would guarantee that it would be a good investment due to knowing that I would be able to get many updates before version 4.0 came out.

Version 3.0.5 came out two months later in June 2015. I have one good update. Everything is going good so far. ...

But for the very next version (3.1.0), the developer dropped support of the XP OS (due to going with NET Framework 4.5 or greater being required). Customers that purchased the software to use on an XP OS only just got dumped. Sure I can use it on the Windows 7 and 10 OS computers, but they don't need it.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the logic for going with NET Framework 4.5, but regardless of any justification, you dumped some of your customer base when you didn't need to, and when they were not expecting it. The other minor changes in the software could have easily been incorporated into a version that continued to support XP, even if you wanted to also offer a NET Framework 4.5 version.

Did you not think or care about your customer base that might be depending on you supporting XP through at least version 3.9.9? After that, sure drop XP, but why now?

HJ B It is not clear what kinds of files this program will operate on. Is it just plain text files? Will it work on MS Word, Excel, pdfs, and other kinds of data files?

James Roberts HJ B, lisba f:
It's for plain/unicode text files of the type used by programmers and web designers, etc. It's not designed for binary files such as PDF. I wouldn't recommend using it for word files as you could end up with corruption when replacing.

Dan Amiel I bought this software through digitalvolcano a while ago and i must say, this is a must have tool if you are proficient with regular expressions like i am and own millions of searchable text files like i do. This tool is fast, accurate, well organized and easy to work with. It's ability to use all cores of the processor saves you time because you get results much faster. Again, great work team! I recommend this software warmly.

Thomas User Thanks a lot for this deal!,
it's sad that you don't offer to use it on all owned computers - at least for private use. I own 4 physical computers which have different virtual machines. Yes: all for private use - or for my support of non-profit organizations.
Jul 15 2018 at 1:47am Copy Link

James Roberts You are free to install it on each of the machines you own for your own use - it isn't restricted to one installation.

Thomas User Thank you, James, for your answer!,
I'm very sorry, but you're wrong, "the fine print" says:

"Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop."

For private use, it would be great if we could install and use it on all owned computers.
