bvssunnydale Sorry guys, way too expensive, for occasional/rare use (I have askSam and would consider it otherwise).

Michael R. Looks very interesting, escpecially because the ability to use command-line-commands and embed it into other programs.

Unfortunately the light version is not discounted today. It would be a nice occasion to try out your program and find the limits before going on to the standard-version.

So, perhaps you'll offer it next time...!?

Rich Ackerson This looks very interesting - particularly given my recent search for a product to replace Monarch. Do you provide a comparison between TextPipe Pro and Monarch, by any chance?

Since this deal offers the 50% discount on both the Standard and Professiona versions, I have to be greedy and ask... does the same hold true for your Engine DLL?

Tore Hoyem Just to clarify:

This promo says "TextPipe Pro(fessional)" - Retail $199,-

But your comparison page says that the TextPipe Standard ed. is priced at $199,-, while the Professional version has a retail price of $395,-.
I take it that the offer for $99,50 is the Standard version?

Yes, I know all versions are discounted, but the "TextPipe Pro" heading on the BDJ page is a little confusing, i.e. the heading and the prices should be linked.
(If I'm reading this correctly, that is).

Provided that - like a book - TextPipe can only be used by one person, then that would be fine. However if TextPipe was in use in two places at once, either by two humans or by a human plus automated processes, then that would not be fine. I hope that helps!

disenchanted The difference in features between the Standard and Pro versions appear to be 4 features:

--Mainframe copybook functions:

1. Mainframe Copybook Wizard and Filter
2. ASCII to EBCDIC, EBCDIC to ASCII

--Other:

3. Export filter to clipboard/export command line to clipboard
4. Export to JScript, VBScript and web pages

Questions:
1. If I were to purchase the standard version and later decided I needed the Pro version, What is the cost to upgrade?

2. After the first 12 months of updates, what is the cost for someone to upgrade to the next version?
- of the Standard edition?
-of the Pro edition?

Thanks for your time.
May 3 2012 at 6:18pm Copy Link

For Standard - upgrades after 12 months are $50

Jim McGowan I don’t know that I would get much use from TextPipe Pro, but with the only difference between Standard and Pro being mainframe capabilities I must offer much praise to the developer.

Far too many companies create a "professional" edition by simply holding back some necessary features from their product and then forcing a "Pro" upgrade to access them. It is a pleasure to see a developer who has structured his products in a fair and useful way.

Thank you - it is very much appreciated!

Michael R. Usually there is a distinction between the term 'upgrade' and 'update'. Upgrades are when the highest number before the first '.' change and usually this comes along with a significant change of the product, while updates are mostly minor changes and, even more important, bugfixes.

In your policy it says upgrades are free for 12 months. What about updates?

I bought this tool about a year ago. Does this mean I have to pay again, if the version number changes from let's say 9.2.2 to 9.2.3 after this year?
Oct 8 2012 at 9:20pm Copy Link
0
Simon Carter @Michael: We make no distinction between upgrades and updates. You get every version change, regardless of whether it is a major or minor release, provided you are within the upgrade period - this is a pretty good deal! You get 12 months of free upgrades with a purchase. If you are beyond one year, then yes, you would have to pay again.

Gerald Attrick Two questions:

What kinds of files can it handle? For instance, can it read the various Word file types, e.g., *.doc, *.docx, *.docm?

When it finds a match, what transformations can it make? Can it highlight the replacement text? Change fonts or font size? Bold, underscore, and/or italicize?
Oct 9 2012 at 9:06am Copy Link
0
Simon Carter @Gerald: It can certainly open Word *.doc, *.docx, Excel files, PDF files etc and extract the contents to text for further processing, but if you just want to modify the text in a document, use our WordPipe search/replace tool.

Incidentally, TextPipe can process .docx as native zip files (which they are), so you can make whatever changes you like to the underlying XML of your document, if you are a Word Jedi.
DataMystic - Oct 9 2012 at 3:18pm Copy Link
0
Gerald Attrick In a nutshell, what I want to do is search through a folder full of Word documents, mostly *.docx, with a considerable number of search terms stored in a text file. When it finds any match, I want to replace that term (often the same as the search term) and highlight it. IOW, the kind of transformation Word itself is capable of doing.

Problem is, I am most certainly NOT a Word Jedi. What I know about XML wouldn't fill a knothole in a toothpick. Thus, the overall process has to be relatively simple and straightforward.

JW This seems to be incredibly powerful: there's just one 'fly in the ointment'! You say it 'integrates with WinExplorer' and there's the rub!! Gave up WinExplorer a long time ago -, in favour of Directory Opus (DOpus) which is so much better! Anyway, do you plan to make your program 'integratable' with other 'File Manager' applications such as DOpus?
Oct 11 2012 at 1:45am Copy Link

Mitchell Kastner I want to be able to extract legal citations from pdf files. Here is a made up example. Jones v. Department of Energy, 34 M.S.P.R. 497, p. 10 (2011). The numbers preceding "M.S.P.R." can occupy either 1,2, or 3 placeholders. How do I code wildcards to match those patterns? I then want the program to extract all text from the last digit after M.S.P.R. through to the close parens enclosing the date? How do I code that? With respect to the "v." (versus sign), I want to extract the one word immediately preceding the "v." and all the words following the "v." up to and including the comma that precedes the volume number of MSPR. How do I do that?

More to the point does the software permit this pattern-matching extraction and can I do it without lots of programming?

Thanks

Stephen Warkentien This page advertises the Pro version for $99.50 but if you click "Buy" The pro version is $197.50. $99.50 only buys the standard version.

Simon Carter @Stephen: Sub filters are where you 'select' a piece of text for further operations that are two hard to express in a single pattern match. For example, you could select columns 4-20, and inside this, convert the matching characters to uppercase.

Or select lines 1-3 and then search/replace 'Quote' with 'Invoice'

Or select IMG tags, and within this select the SRC attribute, and make a search/replace.

Or select lines matching '404', inside these lines, select columns 10-20, and inside this replace 'GET' with 'POST'.

You can probably see how you could use this for your own tasks - subfilters can be arbitrarily complex, and are very powerful. No other text processing tool offers them.

Kelly Major I've been studying your web site and I have a few questions and I'm a bit confused about a few things:

It seems like you have a lot of additional products that can either be purchased as add-ons to TPP but when I look at the feature comparison chart it seems like some of those may be included in TPP? The chart shows TPP being able to access Excel, Word, PDF documents, yet there are other products to access those types of files.

The description for TPP says "TextPipe is unique in offering the EasyPattern pattern matching language..." but that appears to be another product? Is it included or an extra purchase?

TextPipe Pro lists a price of $395, Standard is $199. Yet the deal here is listed as TextPipe Pro at half price for $99. So if we buy this deal do we get TPP or TPS?

The answer to the licensing question above is either unclear to me or not very appealing to me. Do I understand correctly that if I purchase TPP I get any updates of any kind for a year but after that I have to re-purchase the product at full price to receive any updates?

Thanks for any clarification you can offer. - KEM

Simon Carter @Mitchell: Here is an EasyPattern match to do the job:

[ capture(word) as 'partya'] v. [ capture(1+chars, ',') as 'partyb' ] [ capture(1+digits) as 'number' ] M.S.P.R. [ capture(1+chars) as 'reference' ] ([capture(4 digits) as 'year'])

Set the replacement text to:
"@partya@","@partyb@","@number@","@reference@","@year@"

and check the "Extract matches" option.

Kelly Major I see that you answered one of my questions while I was writing my last message:

"The price shown on the right is for the standard version, which is all you will ever need if you don't need mainframe copybook conversions."

I'd say you should change the BDJ description or the delivered product or the price listed. The listed price on the right should reflect the product "headline" description That's just misleading to put it politely.

- KEM

Simon Carter @Kelly: TPP can extract text from Excel, Word and PDF documents - but it cannot replace inside those formats and result in the original document - all processes result in text files or some type.

For MS Word, use our WordPipe product, which works specifically with Word documents. Similarly for Excel - use ExcelPipe.

The EasyPattern matching language is included, there is an extra 'helper' add on which helps you design EasyPatterns (not included).

All TextPipe products are 50% off, so you can choose which one you need for a great deal. TextPipe Pro is mainly used for mainframe copybook conversions. Yes, the listing heading is misleading and I will get it changed.

After 1 year upgrades are optional. The product does NOT stop working.

Matt I purchased TextPipe last time it was offered here on BDJ.

I am extremely happy with it! Simon has given great support. He also notifies you when updates are released.

@Mitchell - Maybe Simon could help you out with that, but I would suggest, if you are not familiar with regular expressions, that you go through some of the really good, free online tutorials. TextPipe is very capable of pattern-matching extraction. There is no programming needed, just an understanding of regular expressions (regex) and how TextPipe operates. Also go through the excellent TextPipe tutorials.

@Stephen - A sub-filter is like a process within a process. If TextPipe matches a certain text pattern (Filter), Then it attempts to obtain another pattern match within the initial match (Sub-Filter).
Oct 11 2012 at 1:11pm Copy Link

Simon Carter @James: Thank you! I should have mentioned that describing pattern matching to someone can easily fill a book, and mentioned the free online sites.

Also, TextPipe offers EasyPatterns, that are far easier to understand than normal regex (and just as powerful).

Thanks for the clarification and I'm glad to hear you have requested the sale description change.

I'm sorry but I feel like I need to ask yet again just to be absolutely sure I understand the pricing/licensing.

I asked "...I purchase TPS and I get any updates of any kind for a year but after that I have to re-purchase the product at full price to receive any updates?"

Your replied "After 1 year upgrades are optional. The product does NOT stop working."

I understood the product would not stop working. I understand upgrades are optional. The question still in my mind is if I want any kind of update/upgrade after 1 year of purchase is the only option to re-purchase the product at full price? If prices stay the same for TPS that's $99USD today and $199USD each year after that.

There is no option to purchase ongoing maintenance including upgrades/updates? There is no discount whatsoever to owners of previous versions of the product who wish to update/upgrade beyond 1 year after purchase?

If that is the case and I buy today, 366 days from now I'm loving the product and there is an update. I have to pay the then current full price, essentially purchasing the product again like a new customer. Do I then have 2 licenses, the old one and the new one each which can be run at the same time on different computers?

Sorry if I seem repetitive but I want to be absolutely clear since this is the only outstanding issue delaying my purchase decision.

If this is all spelled out on your web site just point me to it if you like,

Simon Carter @Kelly: Thanks for the question, which I think will definitely lead to some site changes - we need to make this clearer.

You do not get charged the full price again. You can resume upgrades at any point; the yearly upgrade price varies from product to product. Prices are currently: Pro - $99/year. Standard - $50/year. Lite - $15/year.

Mitchell Kastner Simon,

I am beyond greatful. Thank you for providing me with the code. I used it on some text that I copied into the trial input box and the trial output was just perfect. Just surpassing support. Although I am retired and on fixed income, I am just going to purchase the license based on your outstanding response to my question.

But I have another. I want to apply that filter to a dozen or so pdf files and I want to export the extracts to a simple text file. I have not been able to do it. Any hints?

I am hopiing to do some sales for a qualitative data research software company in the legal "space" to use their term for market. I want to code one of my own case files which is in pdf format using the qdr software and then take my laptop with me on sales calls. I cannot very well display the names of my client and the witnesses; so I just assumed that I could replace the real names with fictional names and replacing other real identifiers with fictional ones while maintaining the integrity of the pdf format. That does not seem possible as the output from textpiple appears to be a txt file. Any suggestions?
Oct 11 2012 at 2:24pm Copy Link

Simon Carter @Mitchell; Glad it worked eventually - I have requested the PDF via email so we can find out why it did not work. To combine the output - just use the Output Filter (at the bottom of the list) to send the output to a Single Output Filename, and then drag all 6 input files to the files tab.

Unfortunately TextPipe is not designed to find and replace inside a PDF - it can only extract and then manipulate what comes out of the PDF. Sorry!

Kelly Major @Simon Carter Wow, I got tied up and then almost forgot I need to make a decision on this purchase. Looks like I made it here in time.

One last question, I promise :) If your not still available no worries.

Can you explain the multi-processor version? So I would need to purchase the MP version to utilize more than 1 CPU? Also, it's unclear if this is even an option for the STD version. My workstation processor is a Intel Core i7 3930K 3.2GHz Six Core so I have 12 "processors" and I would definitely want to take advantage of that.

If you are still around and could clarify this for me I appreciate it. If not I understand, I'll just make a decision in the next 30 minutes and worry about this later.

Thanks! - KEM

Even though I'm old old mainframe guy I think my budget is going to restrict me to the standard version. I don't get many mainframe related work requests any more and even then
Oct 11 2012 at 11:18pm Copy Link
0
Simon Carter @Kelly: The multi-processor version is an extension above the Pro (ie more expensive) - the Std does not have this option. It allows you to divide the processing at selected points onto another CPU, so if you have 12 stages in your filter (including input and output), you could use them all.

Amit I dont have much time to explore textpipe - but would want to ask - is it a full macro software and text editor as the description says. And by macro software I mean - not just office macro but a regular system wide macro software.

And can it be used to find and replace text in all file types - eg. .txt , .rtf etc. in a folder ?

Roger Chapanis In MS Word, sometimes I'll highlight a selected string of characters and then highlight them by running the following macro (courtesy of Wordtips), which encloses them in quotation marks:

===========
Sub AddQuotes()
Dim sBegQ As String
Dim sEndQ As String

If Options.AutoFormatAsYouTypeReplaceQuotes Then
sBegQ = Chr(147)
sEndQ = Chr(148)
Else
sBegQ = Chr(34)
sEndQ = Chr(34)
End If

Selection.InsertBefore sBegQ
Selection.InsertAfter sEndQ
End Sub
===========

But, this process requires four steps: clicking the View menu (in Word), clicking the Macros group, selecting the macro, and then running it.

Is there a faster way to do this in TextPipe--while preserving the format of the file I'm working in (e.g. Word 97/2003)?
Oct 12 2012 at 1:17pm Copy Link
0
Simon Carter @Amit: It's not an interactive editor - it is a stream editor where you setup an editing job and then let it run across thousands or millions of files.

It can handle all txt file types, txt, rtf, html, xml, csv, tab, etc.

It is not macro software.

Simon Carter @Roger: Yes, assuming you have TP running, you can setup a filter to add the quotes (very easy), and then after selecting and copying the text in MS Word, just right click TP's task bar icon and choose 'Clipboard'. TP runs and places the result back on the clipboard - then just paste it back.

This can also be setup more efficiently via a macro that calls TextPipe directly.

John Killeen Just to clarify something about Textpipe Lite, which seems to be the version aimed at home users. One of the most common uses for this kind of software at home would be batch file renaming, e.g. taking a large quantity of photographs and renaming them according to a regex-style pattern. But the Lite version doesn't seem to process filenames, unless I'm doing something wrong.

I see in the comparison table that you need the Standard version to restrict Textpipe to the filename. Does this actually mean that Lite doesn't process filenames at all?

Simon Carter @disenchanted: Only TextPipe is on sale today. WebPipe has been discontinued - as you say, you need to purchase OEPro from metaproducts.

If you'd like to purchase other items as well, you need to use the Avangate cart for all items. First use the Bits du Jour checkout link (which uses Avangate), then return to http://www.datamystic.com/buy, go to the WordPipe page, select your quantity, then click the Avangate button. WordPipe should now be added to your cart. Then do the same process for EasyPattern Helper.

Simon Carter @Alberto: With DataPipe, you can apply a TextPipe filter to just one column without messing with the remaining columns (especially important if you have blob data).

With TextPipe, you'd have to use a database filter to SELECT the entire table, which you can choose to generate SQL for you, then search/replace the appropriate columns in the SQL data, then use another database filter to push the data back into the database (after using an add header filter to 'delete from tablename;' first. It's not as clean as using DataPipe if you actually want to keep the data in the database.

Please note that DataPipe includes a copy of TextPipe in the purchase price.

The EasyPattern Helper is not included in the TextPipe price; TextPipe includes the EasyPattern pattern matching language, see it here: http://www.datamystic.com...terns.html

John Killeen @Simon: Thank you for the positive response. In that case I'll buy Textpipe Lite and look forward to the next release. I also think it gives you the opportunity to sell Textpipe to a new market. There are many batch file re-naming programs on the market, but most rely on the user learning regex for complex re-name jobs. EasyPatterns does look as if it will be of benefit in such tasks.

Bradley MacDonald Hello Simon,

It looks like a nice product. Some questions:
1. Can I use Text Pipe to strip out RTF text from a text file? I want to take a RTF formatted file and strip out the RTF formatting - resulting in just the text of the file. This would be very important to me. Is there a menu option to do so? Or would I have to write a custom filter to do that?

2. You mention above that if we purchased Data Pipe - we get a copy (license?) for TextPipe as well? It seems to be the Pro version. Correct?

3. If purchased - I do some data conversions for clients - and I run each in their own Virtual Machine (VMWare). Would I be able to install it in each VM? Or is it capable of accessing the DBs on each VM from one machine upon which it is installed. It would hvae to be accessed via IP Address in that case.

Comment: Took a look at your web site (love the contact time zones on your contact page) - and you have some interesting products. If I can strip out RTF text - I will probably purchase datapipe.

Simon Carter @Bradley: Yes, you need to be familiar with RTF codes to do this. Another option would be to use the MS Word to text filter, which will achieve the same thing more simply.

2. Yes - DataPipe includes TP Pro.

3. TP uses a standard OLE DB DSN or Data Source Name to attach to the DB - this should work to connect to remote DBs. You could only install it in one client VM at a time.

peter schleifer Simon,
I do NOT want to harm your business in any way but I am seriously interested, but then, in DataPipe = buying Pro here, plus upgrade 100 bucks, right?

Also, I acknowledge that regex, especially for sophisticated tasks, is of real hard "learning curve", so paying 100 oder 200 bucks instead of undergoing that "learning curve" over there makes perfect sense, even if you value your time just 10 bucks (which realistically would be much higher for most of us, I very much hope).

But as far as I'm concerned, I did make quite some way into that awful regex "learing curve" already, hence my question:

Given you have the right tools for doing regex replacement, and suppose you know how to use them, too, to some degree:

What would TextPipe Pro offer for your special situation, on top of what you would have got already, without using TextPipe Pro? And if DataPipe (which is not included in this offer, that's understood) offered something really good, on top of that, what would that be?

Again, for regular users, let me repeat that yes, instead of "learning" regex (which is quite some "endless" effort), for heavy use, buy TextPipe instead!

Simon Carter Hi Peter,

Yes, upgrading to DataPipe afterwards is an additional $100.

For power users, TextPipe allows you to control precisely which text is modified, such as restricting a replacement to just column 3, or just to lines 1-100, or to just the ALT attribute of an IMG tag, or apply some elements just to files matching a pattern, or just to internal zip files that match a pattern (perfect for Microsoft Office .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats and OpenOffice formats).

These restrictions can be layered, such as restricting to columns 1-10 of lines 1-100 and then UPPERcasing all the text. This is very difficult in any other tool.

TextPipe has 270+ text operations it can perform, which you can see in an easy-to-visualise tree structure.

And as you say, we also offer the EasyPatterns language, which makes patterns like

(this section did not post correctly - I will get it updated!)
' ) as 'inner_text' ]>
instead of
]+)>

simple for non-programmers to understand.

PC USER PLEASE BE ADVISED. PLEASE BE ADVISED.

As wonderful as this product is.
The Upgrade / "subscription" policy is NOT so wonderful.

That is, if you purchased TextPipe Standard for half-price in Jan 31, 2012 for example.
Your year of free upgrades would have expired on Jan 30, 2013.

Now today, you decide to upgrade to the 'latest' version of TextPipe Standard as of October 13th, 2014.

Seeing that for Standard upgrade price is $50/year

You will be charged $100 to cover 2013 and 2014. However you will then be covered from Oct 13, 2014 to Oct 12, 2015. So basically it would be 'cheaper' for one to simply purchase a brand new copy of TextPipe Standard using the BDJ discount i.e. $99.50

Likewise if you had purchased TextPipe Lite on Jan 31, 2012. Seeing that for Lite, the upgrade price is $15/year. To upgrade would cost you $30.
Again, it would be cheaper to purchase a brand new copy of TextPipe Lite using the BDJ discount to get the latest update.

So Caveat lector!

peter schleifer I just discovered that DataPipe is for sql, ExcelPipe is for Excel, WordPipe is for Word (to begin with, the ability to make changes in a binary format is very good, but there are other such binary text formats which neither TP nor WP will handle then), and TextPipe is for ascii/ansi (incl. html, xml, etc.), so plus 100 $ would not buy me some "does it all program", but I would have to buy distinct tools for distinct text formats, and there is even WebPipe, so TextPipe would have its limitations with html/web formats. I also discovered that prices have doubled, e.g. Lite was 30$, now is 60$, so from my understanding, this would have doubled oncoming update prices, too (updating not being mandatory, understood).

There also is PowerGrep (150$, from another vendor, 3 months money-back guarantee so you really could compare your workflow with that with your current one), and I'm currently searching for comparisons between the two; all I can say at this time, it's NOT that with 300$ plus VAT (so this "update to DataPipe" in the "older comments" section was quite misleading), you would have a tool that is 2 times the price of PowerGrep but "did it all" - that definitely is not the case, not even approximately (cf. MS Word files processing left out).

On the other hand, this offer seems to be an excellent one to get Lite/Standard versions at former regular price.

Is the $30 for Lite and $50 for Standard upgrade the regular upgrade price?
Or is it reduced to go along with today's sale?

peter schleifer I suppose upgrade is 50 p.c. of original price, i.e. 60/200/400 bucks (let alone some bucks for remaining under the threshold of 100/200), i.e. 30/100/100 or some. Thus, dreaming of 50 bucks upgrades for Standard would be indecent.

You know, I'm intrigued by this offer, anyway, but then, those Australian offerings are quite expensive, especially in direct comparison (Directory O, anyone?).

This being said, it's clear as day that it's impossible to halfway-thoroughly trial software of this kind during a day; the above-mentioned competing software offering a 3-month money-back period, I'd buy immediately here and today if we were offered such a money-back alternative, even after buying on-the-spot.

You know, I contacted the developer of the competing product this morning (European time, no time shift problems involved), in order to get his opinion why I should buy his product instead (150 bucks instead of 400 vs. 200 here, but the only comparison between the two, from TextPipe, FROM TextPipe (!), even pretends TextPipe STANDARD does more than PowerGrep, so it would be 200 / 100 here vs. 130 over there) - that developer did not even respond.

Which would be a strong argument for TextPipe, would it not be for the fact that above-mentioned "comparison" between the two, BY TextPipe, as said, pretended, AGAINST FACTS, that PowerGrep wasn't able to handle Unicode...

which had been true several years ago only, since from the PowerGrep manual (pdf available from their site), "perfect" Unicode handling now in version 2 (not in former version 1) is evident.

Which, at the end of the day, means that neither of them seems to deliver up-to-date info for customers or prospects, and there are numerous text processing tools available, at 20-30 bucks, cf.

http://www.smashingmagazi...-reviewed/

for those not fully into regex, so I really don't know if I'd be well advised to spend 200 bucks today, plus quite quickly 200 bucks for the next upgrade, etc.

This is a lot of money, especially in light of the fact the 5 billion dollars spent by the U.S. in Kiew brought down the euro to on-par-very-soon with the dollar... that at least has been a VERY good investment.

Simon Carter Peter Schleifer: Hi Peter, can I refine your discoveries - DataPipe allows TextPipe to operate on text in a database directly - without exporting the text and then importing it again, which can be very complex. But TextPipe on its own can cannect to a db and extract or insert records - DataPipe is for far easier in-place work where the records might change during the processing.

WordPipe, ExcelPipe and PowerPointPipe all operate on office documents, each office product has their own bizarre inconsistencies, bugs etc that make an all-in-one difficult for anything other than search only. $100 extra for such a product belies the hidden complexity of the products - but we do offer substantial discounts with our bundles. They are not 'text' products.

WebPipe is for downloading web sites - TextPipe then data mines content from them. TextPipe has no limitations when it comes to html/xml etc.

The Lite price was increased a year or so ago because it is way more powerful than anything else at the low end of the market. No other prices have been changed. There is no conspiracy.

We also have a 90-day money back guarantee. PowerGrep and TextPipe are different products. TextPipe is intended for automating very complex, multi-step text operations, PG is intended for interactive use.

Simon Carter Peter Schleifer: The upgrade price *IS* $50 for Standard. Why did you suggest it would be more, and then suggest that it *is* $200. That's wrong.

BitsDuJour offers a "Deal of the Day" - that the whole idea. Get vetted (good) products at a far discounted price, while accepting some risk that it might not be perfect for you.

PowerGrep's homepage bags TextPipe based on a customer review from 2009. We do the same, but not as blatantly, and we weren't the first.

Matt Hello,

I purchased TextPipe Standard here on BDJ about two years ago and I'm very glad I did!

It saves me a ton of time and work! I also own PowerGrep 4, but as Simon mentions above, TextPipe and PowerGrep serve two different purposes.

I hardly ever have a need for PowerGrep, but I use TextPipe all of the time.

My one year of free upgrades/updates ran out about a year ago. I probably won't upgrade until version 10 is released.

Thanks BDJ and Simon for the very nice software and great deal!

THX1024 I've searched all the previous questions posted as well as the product web site and can't find any mention of this:

Can TextPipe read a specific list of files to be searched from standard input (STDIN) or from a text file, in the way that grep can (with the --file-list option) and ack can (with the -x and --files-from options)?

I currently use those tools in combination with the excellent Everything by voidtools, with the latter generating the exact list of files for one of the former to search. I'm looking for some new text-search capabilities and it looks like TextPipe would give me that in spades, but I'd like to feed it, on the fly, the list of files to be searched.

disenchanted Simon,

After re-reviewing the PRO version's feature set vs. Standard's feature set, there seems to be only 2 feature differences:

1. Mainframe Copybook Wizard and Filter
2. ASCII to EBCDIC, EBCDIC to ASCII

So I'm thinking that it will be more advantageous for me to upgrade my Lite edition to the Standard edition. That would give me a total of 2 Standard editions.

I logged into my account on the Datamystic website recently.
The upgrade option on the order form indicates a cost of $139.05, to go from "Lite to Standard".

Questions:
1. Is that correct final price?
2. Are there discount codes that can be applied, to make the upgrade price lower?

If it is normally $139.05 to upgrade from Lite to Standard,
I'm going to order another copy of your Standard edition during today's sale.

If my upgrade prices are wrong, please let me know.
Thanks again.

Also, when do you plan on releasing version 10? Will there be major changes to version 10, such as updated GUI?

Richard Blake NC Buyer: If you buy today you will do even better - you will have a second license with a year of maintenance from today, including a guaranteed v10 upgrade even if it does not ship within a year. Use your old license on a computer that you can share with others, e.g. an older system in a common area at work. This will give you a chance to show off TextPipe's virtures, mentor others and be their hero, and perhaps generate a few sales for Simon.

At the bottom of the feature comparison page it says
You may install the software for one user, such as in a Terminal Server or Virtual Machine environment, in a workstation virtualized environment.
The EULA supports the more traditional single-user situation:
May either be used by a single person who uses the software himself on one or more non-server class computers, or installed on a single non-server class computer and used by multiple people, but not both.

Doug Lietz One of the database files (MySQL) in my WordPress blog needs a search and replace fix performed on it. I need to be able to include a "Wildcard" parameter in the "Find" part of the process. I've found a lot of MySQL search and replace tools in the marketplace, but none of them allow me to include Wildcard variables.

Basically, this is what I want to do...

Find...
Author_Name@Wildcard_Text_String

And Replace with just...
Author_Name

In other words I want to remove all instances of "@Wildcard_Text_String" that are found immediately follow any instance of "Author_Name"

Will this software do that for me? If so which version would I need to purchase?

I've been collecting and archiving lots of customer feedback quotes and testimonials in a Excel spreadsheet, and I would like to run a process that generates a report showing commonly used words across all of the data in the file.

So the report would generate this type of info for me....
CommonWord1 >> Number of Instances
CommonWord2 >> Number of Instances
CommonWord3 >> Number of Instances
Etc, Etc.

CommonTwoWordString1 >> Number of Instances
CommonTwoWordString2 >> Number of Instances
CommonTwoWordString3 >> Number of Instances
Etc, Etc.

CommonThreeWordString1 >> Number of Instances
CommonThreeWordString2 >> Number of Instances
CommonThreeWordString3 >> Number of Instances
Etc, Etc.

And so on... up to the point where the process can not find any more repeating multiple word strings.

Will this software run this type of process?

Simon Carter @Doug Lietz - I certainly believe it can, but I'll ask you for some specific examples offline just to make sure! We have a database tool called DataPipe that included TextPipe. It lets you connect to databases and apply all of TextPipe search/replace power (wildcards, search/replace lists, vbscript, etc) directly to fields in your database - without a SQL export and import process.

The only proviso is that all the changes need to be inside one field - you can't reference multiple fields at once in the search/replace (you can still apply a where clause to the table to only affect certain rows).

If you need to access multiple fields then an export/import process will still be needed.

I've just asked BDJ to add DataPipe to this special - here is the link

Michael R. Can I use Textpipe Lite to excerpt all links from within a given html-file and save it to a file?

Can this be done from within a self-written (C++)-program?

If not, with which version this would be possible?

Instead of saving them to a file, could the link-results also be given back to the program (e.g. as pointers to a string-array)?

If yes, has this already been possible with v9, I purchased some years ago...

Thanks.

J Hi Simon,

I sent the following email to your tech support twice and still haven't received an answer.

Hello Support,

I'm a registered user of TextPipe Standard 10.

When I check for updates, it says that 10.0.1 is available, but when I log
in I can only download version 10.0.0.

Also, the 'What's new' page is not updated to 10.0.1.

And finally, since I'm a paid registered user of TextPipe 10, would it be
possible to remove the 'Buy Now' button from the ribbon?

Maybe it would be better to show this only on the trial version. It gives
the user a feeling that he is using 'unregistered' software. I think I
speak for many users in saying that when you pay for software, the last
thing you want to see is a 'Buy Now' prompt. It just doesn't feel right.

Thank you,
---

Could you please forward this to your Tech Support?

Thank you.

disenchanted Simon,

Hi,

I was going to purchase an extra license during today's sale, for a new PC of mine.[I already have 1 lite and 1 standard of Textpipe].

The order form seems setup toward New Buyers and I assume it will create a new account/log-in. [It doesn't appear to offer any "log-in option" for "existing Textpipe/Datamystic customers".

Will using the Textpipe payment vendor, via BDJ's webpage, result in me creating a "new customer account" at the payment vendor, and/or Textpipe?

If so is there someway to use an existing account of mine, to log-in and pay [just to keep my Textpipe/Datamystic orders "together" under one buyer/user name].

Thanks in advance for your time.
