What are people saying about ThoughtOffice Brainstorming Software

Stephen User From the application web site it appears that there are several versions -- modules -- which cost up to $400 or more. Which version is this? How much does it cost to add modules?

Mark Effinger Hi Steve - and thanks for the questions.

This is the "base" version of ThoughtOffice, with 2 modules included.

The Expert Topic Modules bolt-on to ThoughtOffice to add deeper brainstorming across specific areas of need or interest (eg Expander provides 2,200+ questions regarding the possible options you might address in any given problem or opportunity).

Our bundles make it easy to get started with a specific set of ExpertTopic Modules, and include ThoughtOffice as well, at a discount over buying piecemeal.

Let me know if that covers it for you.
Best,
ME

Daniel Kamman What are the 2 modules included with the "base" version? and where can I find information on them?

I ask because in the demo (that I downloaded from thoughtrod.com) I clicked on the Topics button, then clicked on "Click here to load module", which produced only one module: Quickstart.

Quickstart consisted of a welcome message, a few samples from each of 4 modules, and "Now It's Your Turn", which has two sentences.

Am I missing something in the demo? or does the bitsdujour version include modules that are not in the demo?

Mark Effinger Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the ping on this.

Yes, the actual product sold goes beyond the Quickstart module to include:
Expert Evaluator Module - http://www.thoughtrod.com...or-module/

Expert Solutions Module - http://www.thoughtrod.com...ns-module/

Those are part of our core IP, hence the reason they don't ship with the trial.

Let me know if that helps answer your questions, Daniel.

Mark Effinger Good question, Frank.

No other modules are on sale at this time, but we do offer upgrade discounts for users of IdeaFisher and other brainstorming software.

We may also do some promotions on modules later this year.

Mark Effinger Hi Richard,

Absolutely. The IdeaBrowser is an integrated part of ThoughtOffice.

Sorry for the confusion. It's been a challenge to explain the 3 primary interface elements in a way, as both the IdeaBrowser and the TopicsBrowser are extensible.

Watch for additional IdeaTabs coming later this year.

John H Hi Mark
I have a machine and welding shop and need to filter the numerous product ideas that come flooding in. There is almost too much creativity.

It appears that the base package plus the product development would be the way to go.

Would appreciate your recommendation.
Thanks

Just tried several times to pay through Paypal. However, Paypal always grabs the full price - although I entered the coupon code and updated the price.

What can I do?

Mark Effinger Hi, Franz.

Thanks for asking. Sorry about the hassles in the shopping cart. Some customers do seem to be having trouble using PayPal. If that's your only option, rest assured that we will refund the amount of the discount as soon as possible after you place your order.

You can also use a credit or debit card, if you have one, and the coupon will certainly be applied to your order.

Shout out any time you have a question. We're happy to help!

Curious Steve I would certainly like to try this software. When launching on my Mac I get the error "Startup terminated by User." then on my second Mac it launches but the first button I click it says "Your Trial has Expired."

Mark Effinger Hi, Steven.

The most common cause of this behavior on the Mac is having the program installed to the Desktop, rather than the Applications folder. Please check out the installation instructions and video on our web site:

http://www.thoughtrod.com...-mac-os-x/

And - to launch the program in demo mode - simply click the "Close" button.

Give a shout if you have any questions.

disenchanted There seems to be an issue with security on the ordering area of the vendor's website.

The little gold padlock, lower right hand portion of page, has an exclamation mark, inside of a red circle.

If you hover your mouse over the padlock, a warning balloon pops up and states," Warning. Contains Unauthenticated content"

I have tried accessing the order page, both at home and at a friend's place. Utilitizing 2 different pc's.
Browser used in both location: firefox.

I get the same condition both locations, on both pc's.

Opening the security icon (the gold padlock) displays the tech info:
"Connection partially encrypted"

Is it safer to just use paypal at this time, vs entering a credit card on the thoughtrod.com payment page?

Mark Effinger Hi Folks!

Sorry for the delay in responses.

Steve - I just sent an email to you re: your demo download.

Also: Updates are free. Full version Upgrades are a fee, but very reasonable. We've sold nearly 400,000 copies worldwide, and have never gouged a user on upgrade pricing.

Frank: The padlock issue is the actual box image that is pulled into the cart. There is no real security issue with the data. We'v gone over this with the cart developer and the issuer of our SSL certificate.

Let us know if that handles the issues, folks. Much appreciate you.

Daniel Kamman I'm unclear on what is meant by full and major when describing version upgrades.

Mark wrote:"Full version Upgrades are a fee, but very reasonable."

Nico wrote in the next comment: 'The Policy is always listed on BitsDuJour on the "Policy" tab'

The policy for ThoughtOffice includes: "Free upgrades to next major version and minor versions thereafter, paid upgrade with discounts to future versions to owners of the preceding major version.".

What is the difference between "full version upgrades" (which are a fee) and "upgrades to next major version" (which are free) and "upgrades . . . to future versions to owners of the preceding major version" (which are paid with discounts)?
Feb 16 2011 at 3:44am Copy Link
0
Nico Westerdale Say we're on version 7.

"Free upgrades to next major version and minor versions thereafter"

That means that the next version (8) is free.
Also any minor versions after the next version is free 8.1, 8.2...)

Then we move on:

"paid upgrade with discounts to future versions to owners of the preceding major version."

So versions after the next major version have a paid upgrade price (9, 10, 11).

However if you do upgrade at any point (say to version 10) then you'll get a discount on the next version (11).

Simple isn't it! (phew)

And someone had to write all the logic for that policy sentence to be automatically generated based on a selection of ten dropdown lists; yep that was me.

Oliver Mathes Using the regular PayPal at checkout I see the Full Price on the Paypal site even so I see the deducted amount in your order process screen? I stoped the transaction. Did anybody else encounter that problem?

Mark Effinger First, thanks for the management of the dialog Nico and friends. Much appreciate it.

Upgrade vs Update policy:

1) v1.0-1.9 are free "updates".

2) v2.0 is an Upgrade, and is a fractional cost (except for CEO users, who get 12 months of updates/upgrades for free).

3) Current version is v1.5.2

Let me know if that clears any confusion. We would gladly provide infinitely free upgrades if we had an open-source platform that didn't cost so dang much to develop. Possibly someday.
-------------------

PayPal discount issues: We can either create an invoice for the correct amount and you pay that.

Or pay the full price and we will IMMEDIATELY refund the difference.

Our apologies. Our cart seems to have some challenges. The new cart version is out, and Dave is upgrading it over the next 2 weeks. That should solve the issue.

Thanks much, Folks!

Mark Effinger Got it handled, Gary!

Thanks much.

Also: I believe one of our faithful clients uncovered the PayPal vs Shopping Cart issue: If you check the PayPal Express button when using PayPal as your payment method, it appears to work seamlessly.

PayPal, bless their hearts, have like 4 different brand names for their checkout process. None of them sounds anything like what they do.

Anyhow, if you still have issues - hit us up and we'll handle it.

Jaap Aap @David: your statement that

1) v1.0-1.9 are free "updates".
2) v2.0 is an Upgrade, and is a fractional cost (except for CEO users, who get 12 months of updates/upgrades for free).

is not in line with the policy ""Free upgrades to next major version (which is 2.0) and minor versions thereafter (which is 2.x)".

I purchased already - and assume that the stated policy will prevail, in particular given the fact that you made other statements like "Watch for additional IdeaTabs coming later this year" and the fact that version 2 is already up for this spring and will contain some desperately anticipated fixes for the idea browser and keyboard database (see the discussion of the previously offered CEO version).

Many thanks,

If you choose the PayPal Express option, the coupon code seems to work a lot more reliably.

We've added a reminder to that effect to the bottom of the order form in the cart.

If you need the credit card fields filled out for Paypal, then please say so - and note that filling out the field for credit card info when using paypal defeats one of main reasons for Paypal - not distributing my credit card number.

Obviously, there was a mistake. You apparently have never made one. I, however, am very glad you got "being a jack@ss" out-of-the-way for today. Hey me too!

Anyway, the snag occurs because--like you pointed out--certain fields are not filled out. Thus, it creates a repetitious-fatal flaw in the transaction. HOWEVER, there is a loophole, if you click the regular PayPal node/insert/button/function you will notice the credit card information disappears. When it does (disappear), revert back to the PayPal Express method and click the "Submit" button as quickly as possible.

While this method isn't obviously how I'm sure PayPal, ExitPath, ThoughtOffice or anyone else drew it up, it does work. On the aforementioned note, I'm out. Peace!

Also, thank you TO for the discount! I'm excited to try out your software.

Mark Effinger You folks ROCK!

First - our apologies for the PayPal issues. We're moving the hosting next week, as we upgrade the whole dang thing. So that ought to clear out the mucus.

A quick note to say: I have no idea where you folks came from. But in the world of clients/customers/fellow geeks - you have proven to be the most accommodating and engaging lot yet.

I've had a couple dozen great email dialogs, and a few "small world" events as well (you know who you are...;-)

Great stuff. Please let us know what else we can do for you.

Also: if you find yourself in the Northern Washington/Vancouver BC area, and want to brainstorm, party or have a killer lunch, please come by and harass me and the folks here in our offices: www.LoomisHall.com. I assure you a good time.

To your awesome brainstorms,

We've been having issues with the "Lyrics" tab in the IdeaBrowser, and have been working on it. It's listed under "issues and updates" on our site: http://www.thoughtrod.com...ws-issues/

Adam S. hi,
your product looks exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
I notice that the coupon code works on bundles as well, that defiantly awesome. my question is - how do I add another expert module + the book without being charged on theme?

p.s.
can I suggest Designers problem solver module for future releases? :)

Mark Effinger Hi Adam,

We'll send the book link your way with the purchase.

And the coupon code works for ALL bundles (everything on ThoughtRod) through this promotion.

Adding modules is easy. They "plugin" to ThoughtOffice via the Import Module menu.

And yes: a Designer's Problem Solving Module makes a ton of sense. We're taking notes for the next version. Thanks for the great suggestion.

Mitchell Kastner The summer is nearly here and as I recall in your last appearance on BDJ not too long ago you stated that v.2 of the UI would be out this summer. Could you please give us a reasonably detailed report on the new UI? I cannot speak for others who like I have made a substantial dollar investment in the modules but I am counting on the new UI to extract maximum use from the modules.

Mark Effinger Hi Mitchell,

Eric is working on the development platform as we speak. We are looking at one final update to ThoughtOffice in it's current form (a final pass to make it very clean in every detail). That's most likely the last pass on the RunRev platform.

Then new version, v2.0, will have stronger cloud and portable device elements. We're digging into Titanium right now, to see how deep we can go with it. So far, so good. We'll know somewhere around the end of May how versatile Titanium is for our application. So far, we like it.

The benefits, aside from device portability (yet coded for the device, rather than a runtime layer like Java) will be a local database; more IdeaTabs (and a development platform for integrating your own tabs or requesting tabs); the ability to add Topical Additions to the Topic Modules; Topic Module Development; possibly audio transcription capabilities; possible video placement and export.

The first rev will replicate ThoughtOffice, but with some interface enhancements. Then we'll have the roadmap for new features. And a practical model for users to enhance and exchange components.

Ideally, ThoughtOffice 2.0 will provide a more freeform palette and a timeline in which to add content (brainstorming and creativity pull from past-present-future. We believe displaying things over time can help improve the creative process.

I plan to create some video presentations to help clarify what our clients have requested (especially the larger collaborative groups). And we're also very attuned to the personal, single creative who uses ThoughtOffice as a Ninja brainstorming partner: get in, get ideas, get out. So that's a big part of it as well.

Let' me know if that helps. Mitchell, your input continues to be valuable. We hear you. And it helps.

Mitchell Kastner I am an attorney who prepares his direct and cross examination in advance of trial. In my experience on cross examination, the answers to one or two questions can make all the difference between the jury believing or disbelieving a witness. I have used the ThoughtOffice Investigator Module to insure that I don't miss those few crucial questions on cross or direct examination.

I think out of the box to begin with, as evidenced by my devotion to this idea-generation tool. ( I venture to say that for hoi polloi generating more ideas is not an idea that they generate.) That I understand the importance of idea-generation does not mean that I generate ideas well on my own. I don't. Hence the need for this tool.

I crave the new interface because because I hope it will assist me in applying the new ideas I generate with the modules.

Mina Friedman Hi,
I understand that there's an Internet component portion of this software where you must connect to the online databases to get the most effective use out of this product.

How involved is that? I'm very interested in the software, but I don't want all of my ideas floating around for others to see. Will I be able to keep ideas protected?

Please advise on protection of ideas.

DonaldJ314 I'm confused on the pricing...
your website says $94.49; then "learn more" link says $97; includes TO plus 2 plugins (Evaluator + Solutions)
Finally, bitsdujour says retail $95.77; which is 66% off; Mark's comment says discount for everything on site; discount on the "sale price?"; if not, why is sale price not 66% off then?; comments says including free PDF book and an additional module called Investigator (worth $35); Why doesn't it mention the 2 plugins included?
web site says sale; a plugin normally about $78 now for $35; Do we get 66% off the $35?
CEO $495 on sale; do we get 66% off that? $168?
It's quite unnecessary to be this inconsistent and confusing to customers. It makes me think twice about purchasing.

Also, can i add my own "plugin modules" with my own "expert" questions?

Mark Effinger Hi Folks! Sorry for the delay - We're rockin' this campaign.

Mitchell - First, thank you for the insight on how you use ThoughtOffice. And I assure you: the interface will be a big deal. I've been deep into the bowels of UI research over the last 2 years, delving into where interfaces lose their human connection.

We intend to present as organic an experience as possible, while still providing some framework to corral wayward thoughts.

Mark Effinger Mina - awesome question!

The online databases are inward-facing, not external, cloud-facing.

So your brainstorming and idea generation are completely safe. They never hit the internet cloud unless you post them to a website or blog (the program exports HTML as an option).

There is also a 64-bit encryption component you can enable in the Session Preferences. You can password-protect any Session file for transfer to other devices or associates. We have inventors, IP attorneys and Homeland Security, NASA, etc... using this functionality. So no worries.

Mark Effinger Hi Don,

Thanks for the questions. The 66% off is 66% off the current discounted price on the website ($94.49 for ThoughtOffice, $495 for CEO). So your price is $32.50 and $168.50 respectively. Or thereabouts.

The small price discrepancies are a result of the new cart not being implemented (we were hours away before we had to abort to handle the BitsduJour campaign).

We have a Module Maker in beta. v2.0 will have the ability to add module content inline, without exporting-importing the whole module. We're working on a seamless import/export from any outliner as well, including Word.

Thanks folks. You truly rock.

We will keep you posted on our new update, and then v2.0. We may release v2.0 as a series of separate products that seamlessly hook to each other. We've been looking at that as a way to follow a Rapid Development campaign.

And please give us feedback, good, bad or otherwise. We have product plans that go beyond current off-the-shelf technologies into what we call "unobtanium". But we don't think that's a good reason not to push through boundaries and create something spectacular.

So... thanks again. We're truly honored to serve you. And Dave, Samantha "the other Dave", Marsh and Jess Fisher and a host of contributors thank you for participating in our collective future.
