What are people saying about Timeline Maker Pro

a a According to the Progeny's Support policy page, minor updates (eg.. 2.0 to 2.1) are free and major upgrades (ie. 2.x to 3.x) are available to registered users at a special discounted price.

"Product Upgrades

Major new releases to the Timeline Maker product, denoted by a major version number increment i.e. 2.6 to 3.0, will be made available to registered users at a special discounted price. All registered users will be notified of these special upgrade offers by email and/or snail mail."

However, according to the Policy section at the top of this page, you get 12 months free upgrades (doesn't say whether that includes major upgrades), with NO discount to upgrade to future versions.

I thought products (including licence terms) offered on BDJ were supposed to be the same as if you purchased from the company directly (albeit at a cheaper price :) ) ?

Sorry about the confusion!

Ms Julie Greetings!

I've watched the how-to videos at your site. You have done a nice job of explaining the basics.

My question is this: is it possible to adjust the time durations (as one would in planning, not documenting a historical event) from either of the two CHART GRAPHIC views? Or is the only way to adjust the timeline data from the worksheet-like data entry screen?

By the same token, could the user adjust planning dates, again in the the graphic views, by dragging the date along the timeline, rather than having to change the dates by typing them in?

Many thanks. Best of luck on Wednesday. I have a note on my calendar.
Oct 31 2010 at 8:00am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Hello Julie,

Thank you for your interest in Timeline Maker Professional. To answer your question, the current version of the product requires that dates be changed only in the Event Entry view (spreadsheet entry). The option to adjust events in the timeline chart (i.e. dragging) or chronology report is something we are considering for a future release.

Please let me know if I can be of further service.

Aspiring Writer How fortunate am I to see this lined up. :-)

I'm a bit of an aspiring writer in the fantasy genre, and I struggle with timelines. Can this product base its 'lines' on a custom definition of time?

For example, suppose one makes the calendars coincide with the succensions of rulers in a kingdom. One might rule 20 years, where a year consists out of 11 months of varying amounts of days. The next might rule 30 years, yet feel 10 months are more than plenty. The days per month might suffer similarly unpredictable times, or hell, the length of a week might change.

As history tends to play a large role, I am looking for a clear and concise way to map my world events. I have tried using various programs that base it on the calendar we have IRL, but it just gets too confusing to use - causing me to do stupid and errorprone calculations of 'uh, this time matches that month in the story', and so forth.

Best of luck with your sale, and thanks for the quick answers.

Bob Thomas Hello A.W.

Very interesting ideas you have for your timelines. Timeline Maker does allow some customization of the time scale, but not in the way that you wish to do. The time scale (timeline) is always based on the standard calendar. You can expand or compress the timescale and you can even specify the begin and end dates (BC dates are supported) if you prefer. Best wishes with your writing career.

Jim Maioriello Hello,

Interesting program. I wonder if it's possible to build and present mutiple timelines.

Say you want to analyze and compare side-by-side 2 sets of events that occur at the same time. Or perhaps, you have 2 different descriptions of the same events that took place, say from different witnesses.

Can the program allow the user to present different timelines ide-by-side for comparison?
Nov 2 2010 at 8:30am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Hello Jim,

Yes, you can create multiple timelines from the same set of data. Each timeline can be a different style, include a different sub-set of events, or even cover a different period of time. The benefit is you only have one set of data from which these charts are created. The "Ski Accident" example that comes with the program is a good example of this. With creative use of the built in presentation mode you can present different views in one slide show.

In terms of displaying two timelines side by side, the "flag" chart style does allow you to show a set of events above the timescale and another set of events below the timescale. I have seen examples where two different versions of what happened are displayed on the same chart for comparison purposes. This is accomplished by assigning a category (in event entry screen) to a set of events you want to group together and then moving the group above or below the timescale as required.

Thank you for your interest in Timeline Maker Professional.

Deleto Maximo Hi,
this looks like a very nice product and I believe I had come into contact with it before. So thank you very much for this kind offer.

I am currently evaluating your software to see if it fits my needs. I want to use this for personal education as well as presentations. I am using PDF most of the time and I see that these charts can be exported to PDF.

However, having exported a sample file, I see that the quality of the PDF is not as good as the original file: the upper timeline (the years) is cut off (about 20% of its top). The shadows are not displayed correctly (no alpha-transparency but fading into white, which looks odd on a gradient blue background).

I understand that this is due to compression concerns and that's fine, except for me having to manually optimize the entire data presentation before exporting to PDF. So is there any way I can manually set some sort of PDF preset that does not use any shadows (so that I won't have to disable shadows manually on each item)?

Thank you very much!

Software Guy Does what powerpoint does not do well - timelines. Excel style data input seems much faster and easier than smartdraw or edraw max graphical interfaces, two general drawing programs often used for timelines. Everyday price at tiger direct $83.99
Apr 25 2011 at 2:41am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Sebastian:

Thank you for your comments.

To correct the PDF quality, I suggest that you "Print to PDF". PDF Exchange 3.0 is provided as a printer type in our software and can be selected via the Print Setup." Printing to PDF" will bypass your printers influence on the published output. This will also address the missing pieces of the chart you experienced.

You can turn off shadows for the Events by:

1) While in the Chart Tab, type CTRL A to select all events
2) Right click and select "Format Event"
3) Select the Shadows Tab
4) Select the center box to turn off shadows.

Turning off shadows for the Title, Legend, Timescale, etc. need to be completed individually by selecting them and following steps 2-4.

You could also select and apply a chart theme which does not include shadows.

I trust this will address your questions. Thank you for looking at Timeline Maker Professional.

Lupke Brother Happy to see this deal is coming. I'm testing at the moment. I have one question: is it possible to draw a line between two or more items on the timeline? I need this to show a relation between one or more events on the timeline, but I can't find this function.
Oct 26 2011 at 1:29am Copy Link
Bob Thomas You can select the style of connectors that link an event to the timescale on the "flag" chart. You can even move the events by drag and drop which can influence the position of the lines. Peter B. I think timeline maker is a good product, but a bit outdated. Especially for a normal price of $195. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I really need to share the free version and very cheap plus version (only $2,99) of office timeline, which is a great timeline PLUGIN for powerpoint 2007 and 2010. http://www.officetimeline...fault.aspx

please let the vendor correct me if I'm wrong and timeline maker pro has functions which this plugin does not have!

Bob Thomas If MS PowerPoint is your preferred way to create graphics and you do not need to manage your chronology with all the notes, addendum's and associated files that can accompany a more involved project, then OfficeTimeline is a very slick plugin indeed. Tens of thousands of users have chosen Timeline Maker Professional because it has the rich feature set that best fits their needs, including alternative ways to publish and present your work whether you have invested in MS Office or not. Timeline Maker Professional also includes unlimited free support with a product specialist at the end of the phone. For many business users with a deadline this can be priceless. The bottom line is these are two very different timeline solutions. You have to choose what is best for you.

peter schleifer "Older comments" are instructive, especially since now, 3 years later, it's unknown to what extent issues mentioned there might have been addressed.

I think it's ingenious to have these two-color rectangles, with different top colors for "according to a", "according to b", etc. (cf. the accident example screenshot; also, in less appealing different shades of grey, in the Civil War example), so I became interested in this product.

But on the homepage, there are inscrutable "links", to newspaper sites and such, and mostly to "Twitter", where I did NOT find any of the promised further screenshots, searching those "links" for some 10 minutes though: Ebola, Google, and the South African bathroom shooting-thru-the-door case.

It would have been instructive to have a look a these real-life timelines (and whatever this product might be able to do BESIDES timelines) though, especially for the Ebola and especially for the shooting case, since these are perfect examples for the real-life demands to such software:

The interaction of "timeline" and the SPATIAL representations needed; I fear that this product entirely leaves out this second demand, but it's clear as day that even in the Ebola spread case, where spatial representation would not have been too difficult, with a good vector graphics programme, and all the more so in the shooting case, that spatial reproduction of the "case", timeline included in that suite of "spatial snapshots" (and not the other way round) would be decisive in order to get a better mental representation of what might have been possible, of of what might scarcely have been possible and thus should probably be excluded from being taken into account.

The same remark would apply to one of the most notable / common real-life uses of such software, circulation accidents: Here again, it's the SPATIAL represention where help of a dedicated program would be much needed, whilst a "timeline alone" would both be not that helpful, timeslines being drawed rather quickly with a non-specialized product, but drawing spatial representations in them being a real, very time-consuming chore.

Speaking of just timelines, I would like to know how this software integrates into MS Project, or other PM tools (no info on this on the homepage but perhaps somewhere on the site), and how using this product in such a workflow would be superior to just using the integrated Gantt chart and similar modules all these products come with anyway.

3. One potential, very serious defect in all Time-Line presentation is the INABILITY to control the appearance of each time-line item. One of the worst things that can be done with a time line presentation is the ALL-AT-ONCE presentation --- which cases the audience to scan it (as part of his/her "orienting response") and then tune out the presenter

Does your Timeline soft easily (readily) enable the presenter to easily control the presentation of each item on the time-line, including the separate control over items in the same time vector, but on a different conceptual plane (on multi-level timelines), assuming that the software is capable of creating multi-level timelines.

4. Is the software is capable of creating multi-level timelines?

jack hath Hi Mr. Thomas

Four questions:

!. Why not just flat-out include the upgrade to the next version----given you statement above and the planned being available in Oct.?

2. Does the program auto-check for updates and Self-update from the web?

Rick Hello,

Does the purchase include activation on one or two computers (e.g., desktop and laptop)?

Thank you...

Bob Thomas Hi Jack,

1. This special price offered through BitsDuJour is for the current version of Timeline Maker. Regarding the upgrade, usually we offer free upgrades to those who purchase within 3 months prior. Although the policy has not been entirely finalized yet, you should qualify if you purchase now.

2. There is a user controlled "check for updates" within the program. It will download and install the new version.

3. Timeline Maker allows you to present one event at a time, in sequence, so that your audience will only see an event when you are ready to show it to them. This is a user controlled feature while you are in presentation mode. We call it "step through" mode. It also works when you are presenting within PPT as well.

4. You have the ability to create more than one timeline from the same set of data. Since the program already allows you to link to any external document or file, it would be easy for us to link to another more detailed view (i.e. subset) effecting a "drill down" approach to your presentation. Thank you very much for the suggestion. You will probably see this in version 3!

Bob Thomas Yes, a single user license permits you to install Timeline Maker Pro on both a desktop and a laptop, so long as these devices are for your own use.

Aug 21 2014 at 1:28am Copy Link
Bob Thomas The upgrade price hasn't been finalized yet, however, it is typically set at 40-60% off regular retail price for a product like this.

Matt Hi Bob,

Thank you for your commitment in offering today's BDJ customers a free upgrade to the next major version (3.x).

This is what sold me. I just made the purchase.

Thanks again!

UweS Hello Bob

Like Matt I say thank you for this offer. I bought the software today. 66 Dollars are a lot money for me and so I am happy there will be a free upgrade and I hope we will see it in October.

Charles Hall To Bob Thomas at Timeline Maker:
Is it easy to post timelines created with the program onto a website? I'm talking about maintaining all the functional links, like clicking on an event and having it expand into a detail view, etc. without any additional programming.
Aug 21 2014 at 2:15pm Copy Link
Bob Thomas Timeline Maker helps you post your timeline chart to the web by providing these choices in the program - publishing to a graphic (i.e. jpg, bmp etc...) or an HTML document. This works well but the image will be a static image meaning no automation as when you use in PowerPoint.

Patrick Yancey I've been a user for several years and own the current version. This is a great deal on a great product. This software is a very simple and straightforward way to make timelines. And Peter, yes, when I upgraded earlier this year, the older timelines were compatible.

World Embrace For those who have used it, what are some of the advantages or comparisons to Microsoft Project?
Jul 22 2015 at 4:27am Copy Link
Yvonne Renfrew This software is excellent. Although I own both, I nearly always use it in preference to TimeMap. I am not a user of Microsoft Project and so cannot make that comparison. I use TimelineMaker Pro mainly for creating timelines for purposes of presentation and persuasion (by, e.g., including a Timeline within a document) for which (so far as my own experience goes) this is a Best-In-Class product. (Note: There was, at least previously, some restriction against selling this product to attorneys because the right to do so had supposedly been sold off to some other company (Lexis?, West?) specializing in law-related products. I am not aware of any differences between the product sold to attorneys, and that available to sale to regular mortals--but I suspect that the attorney version is somehow made far more expensive.) The price here makes acquiring this software a no-brainer.

Ela S. Using MS Project 2013 for Project Management, Timeline Maker Pro for all kinds of time lines. I do a lot of historical and scientific researches, and need a lot of long distance time lines.

Timeline Maker Pro is the easiest to handle, creating beautiful and all types of timelines, building-in pictures, icons, drag'n'drop etc.

In MS Project, this would be a huge challenge, using milestones etc. For my use, Timeline Maker Pro is more for creative purpose. But its price is impressive.

Bob Thomas Hi Peter R. The latest version (v3.1) of Timeline Maker Pro should allow you to install separately, unless you already have v3.0 installed on your computer, in which case it will be treated as an upgrade. What version do you have currently installed on your computer?
Progeny Software Inc. - Jul 22 2015 at 10:44am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Further to Peter's question about file compatibility. Older timeline files are forward compatible, meaning they can be opened and used with the new version 3.1. The only caveat is that they are not backward compatible, meaning you cannot open v3.x files with an older version of Timeline Maker.
Progeny Software Inc. - Jul 22 2015 at 10:46am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Timeline Maker is currently being tested with Windows 10, however, we cannot guarantee its compatibility until Win10 is finally released at the end of this month. If we are required to update Timeline Maker to be compatible with Win10 then we will issue a free update. Our commitment is to make sure Timeline Maker is always compatible with the most current versions of Windows.

Michael R. Any chance to get this 66% for the upgrade for former (v2) customers of TimeLineMaker too?

I use it only from time to time and so I decided not to buy a v3-upgrade. With a 66% discount on the regular upgrade-price though, it would be proably too tempting to resist...

It also would honor former buyers. Even with an upgrade-price-discount they have (in sum) more payed than the new buyers (and their purchases made it possible to develop a new version)...

1. MS Project integration (export/import)
2. Various languages, date formats, calendars, right-to-left display?

Ela S. Great! Thanks to Bob Thomas for the free Win 10 update. So just bought the new version v3.
Jul 23 2015 at 4:39am Copy Link
Bob Thomas @ Michael R. This promotion is available to all, including existing users of Timeline Maker v2.x. If you purchase the new Timeline Maker Pro through this offer then, in essence, you will be upgrading.
Progeny Software Inc. - Jul 23 2015 at 5:54am Copy Link
Bob Thomas @ Avi Nahir. 1. No direct import/export with MS Project, but we are beginning to get more requests for this. 2. Language support for dates only. If you download the free trial you will see a very long list of date formats are available, including dot separators (recent update) i.e. 2014.07.23 This can be used both for date entry and display. Only left to right display of the timescale is available at this time.

Daniel Gaudet @Bob: Would it be possible to install it on 3 PCs with one license? I have one desktop and 2 laptops that I use on a regular basis.
Jul 24 2015 at 10:37pm Copy Link
Bob Thomas You would need to purchase a 3 user license to install on 3 PCs, or 2 one user's which would be the least expensive option.

Roberto Could I translate the word "days" to another language? Is the only thing that i miss, to have the full report translated. Thanks.
Jun 20 2017 at 12:58pm Copy Link
Bob Thomas Hi Roberto. I am assuming you are referring to "days" in the duration column of the Chronology report. If so, there is no current way to translate units
of time including the word "days" in this context. BT

Dax User Does this software enable each element of a timeline to be presented (during presentation) serially, i.e., in step-wise fashion, or does it display the timeline all at once?
Jun 21 2017 at 5:31am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Hi Dax. Yes, when in presentation mode, you have the option to "step through" the timeline one event at a time in chronological order. This is a great way to keep your audience focused and avoid jumping ahead in your story. BTW, this feature is also available when you present an interactive timeline chart in PowerPoint - a feature unique to Timeline Maker Pro.

Red Microuser Looks like a great program. Is it possible to have a single task with a monthly auto repeat feature into future months. I could greatly use this task with a dollar amount 'note' for creating monthly visible budgets into the future. Thanks.
Jun 21 2017 at 10:41am Copy Link
Bob Thomas There isn't an automatic repeat function in Timeline Maker Pro. However, one method to eliminate the work of entering a bunch of future dates is to create a date series in Excel (if you are familiar with this function it can be done in only couple of steps) then copy and paste the column of dates from Excel into Timeline Maker Pro. You could also do the same with your budget amounts if that makes sense.

Rodina User I bought it a long time ago and stopped using it because after windows update I had problems with some 3rd party license verification engine. Suggestions from support did not help so I choose another app.
Jul 17 2018 at 2:15am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Since some time has passed, and likely more than one major upgrade, you are welcome to try the 14-day trial and see all the new features. I am confident that the software conflict you were experiencing with Windows no longer exists since we have not had similar reports from other users.

Alexander Deliyannis Hi and thanks for the promotion, I've now purchased the product. I ask here on an issue that may be of interest to other prospective buyers as well: is it possible to use relative dates (e.g. Month 01, Month 02, etc.) rather than absolute ones in the timeline data? Such relative dates are very common in project planning and I believe that they would be very useful.
Jul 18 2018 at 4:17am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Yes, Timeline Maker Pro has the option to display relative dates on any chart. See Date Display options on the Chart menu. Check the box "Numeric Labels" and the calendar dates in your timeline will automatically be changed to the appropriate relative date label. Thank you for your question.

Stefan Hauber Since current version already is v4.5 and former v3 never came higher than v3.1 I'm wondering, if v5 will be published and if the next version is free for buyers, if it arrives within a certain time (e.g. 6 or 12 months)?
Jul 18 2018 at 9:15am Copy Link
Bob Thomas Hello Stefan. I can tell you there are no plans for a newer version for the balance of 2018. If for some reason we have to issue an update, it will be v4.6 and would be a free update.
