What are people saying about Total Directory Report

Allan Winston Is there the capability of exporting results either to a .csv or .txt file?
Oct 28 2011 at 7:25am Copy Link

SagaxSoft Support Hello Allan!
Currently, application allows you to save reports in HTML/PDF formats.
To save report in another format, click "Edit report" button on the toolbar and select external editor (for example, MS Excel, if you want to save report as CSV) from "Select external HTML editor" dialog.

SagaxSoft Support WinDirStat and similar calculates only folder sizes. Our program build 12 different types of reports for folder, disk or FTP server (!) contents, which you can save as HTML or PDF documents.

Adrian Williams Hi Sagaxsoft
I bought Directory lister pro when it was on offer recently. I'm trialling FS&AP - looks good.
What I'd like to see is a listing of duplicated files. Is that a possible option for the future?
Only one limitation as I see is the lack of a 'sort by column' option when viewing results (unless i've missed that).

Small detail, but a calender pop-down option for picking the summary range would be icing on the cake and the year not being shown as 2,011.

What is good is the ability to use the reports to drill down to a programs activity. I mentioned in the rollback rx promotion that my snapshots were large due to file activity behind the scenes. This program would have been able to help me find regularly changed files with one click !

Lupke Brother I'm using foldersizes pro which is very good software but has no ftp scanning. The GUI of folder size & analyze is not as good as theirs, but the ftp function works. Just what I needed. And a lifetime license for $9,90 is a bargain. Thank you guys.

One thing, your software works a bit slow in my opinion and I had a few minor crashes. I'll buy it but keep testing.

Ralph Bressler WOW! Just bought this, downloaded and saved to disk. IMMEDIATELY Norton detected a threat and deleted the file! I am afraid to try again! Should I ask for me money back? Anybody have a similar problem?

Peter Gabriel Ralph,

I've just bought the program and had no virus warnings, so, as has been said, it will in all probability be a false positive.

I'm very impressed with the speed of scanning, a 200MB folder took 5 seconds! Great program.

Ralph Bressler I think it was Norton's RIDICULOUS Insight "feature" that tags programs with fewer users as "dangerous". I am sorry I didn't track this down before posting. I am convinced this was the problem. My apologies.

Steven Avery Hi,

I am interested in your software, since it is true that various size analysis programs have different specialties, one is good for extension analysis, another for folder size, one loves graphs, this and that.

The "few minor crashes" mentioned above by one poster concerns me (such software should be 100% stable) .. however speed on these programs varies, so that is not a major concern.

Two quickies. The idea that these software awards from non-reviewed shareware sites means anything is long gone. It is at the point that such a page is almost unprofessional, unless the site actually gave a review of the software. Imo.

And you need some English proofreading, even just rudimentary

e.g. "Professional - is are try-before-you-buy software."

"our" .. not "are" ...

If you want the English language market to take you seriously you have to make one pass on basic syntax, vocabulary, usage.

The pics on your website, at a quick glance, were impressive. You could expand that aspect.

Just as a FYI, Softpedia says the program was formerly "Active FolderReader PRO"

Amit I tried the demo - but i would have liked if it had some improvements -

a) No right click menu entry on folders - you have to open the software first.

b) If i want to save all reports - all should be saved in 1 html file only not multiple - i like html better than pdf. So many html files generated is clumsy. Also if there was an option to save reports in txt format that wud have made the reports size better. Better than 17 different reports.

CSV output is there but a complete full report in txt would have been better.

Tortuga @SagaxSoft
Hello! I'm preparing to buy, have several questions
1) Usually, it is specified on how many computers user is allowed to install. I have a dual boot PC (XP/W7x64 Pro) & 2 laptops (XP, W7x64 Ultimate)
So, being the only user, I can install on all

2) Looked on your site, can't find any changelogs. And can't find n° for current version either!
3) Please confirm it's unicode, as I have documents/files/etc in several languages

Happy New Year to you & family :)
Peace

Dennis Hey, Tortuga - Read the fine print tab...

Total Directory Report is licensed per user, so ...
Transfer of a license to another owned computer is allowed.
License activation isn't required. what's this?
Dec 30 2012 at 10:01am Copy Link
1
SagaxSoft Support Hi Tortuga.
Total Directory Report is licensed per user, so if more people are going to use Total Directory Report you will need to purchase additional copies.
Total Directory Report is fully compatible with Unicode, so the file names in the reports are displayed correctly.

did I understand the first posting correctly, that one can use the registration key one has got when purchasing Folder Size & Analyze Professional at a former bdj offer (it was said lifetime upgrades) now for total directory report, or does one have to ask you per mail for a new registration key)
Thank you for clarifying this in advance

Tortuga Hey D Hil :)
Thank you for your reply. Yes, I actually read the fine print, I always do and make screenshots of everything, just in case!
But that was not my question ;)

Hi SagaxSoft - Thank you for replying.
1) As I said, I did read the policy. I am the only user!
I don't think it's feasible to install /uninstall /re-install /uninstall / etc, ~EACH~ time I need to use the software on a different computer ...
» My question was/is:
Since the license is "Per user", and I am the only user, I'm able to install the app on my PCs and laptops that I own, even though I'll not use it at the same time, right?
Otherwise the license would have said "Per Computer". I just wanted to clarify, because sometimes 'Dual Boots' are excluded.

2) You forgot to say where I could find the changelogs

Thank you in advance. Peace

Loco Driver Well, I tried Total Directory Report and I like it! Next I tried to buy it, but I got the error message "We cannot accept free e-mail addresses, such as "hotmail.com", for orders using the payment type you selected. Please enter a different e-mail address or change the payment type."

Now that's really weird - I've purchased a dozen BDJ products using the "payment type" PayPal, and my "free e-mail address" on gmail.com, BUT you're the first vendor to complain. PayPal seems to be happy with my gmail address. Sauce for the goose isn't sauce for the gander? :-)

Thank you. . . and have a Happy & Prosperous New Year!

carl thorpe Just purchased at set it to work trying to analyze my main data drive.

It took close to 6 minutes to get through the files, and then told me it would take 56 minutes to generate the HTML files.

Eventually I cancelled that process, and then attempted to analyze a single folder on my main data drive.

Everything seemed fine until I started receiving multple errors about pre-existing files.

My guess is that the first attempt on the whole drive did not delete temporary files, and subsequent runs are trying to use the same filename.

Exiting and restarting does not seem to fix the problem.

Very dissapointing, as I had high hopes for this program.

John User Hi, I purchased the program because as described it sounded like a better replacement for the free program I am using. However, after downloading and installing I am having problems with the registration process.

I was sent the program key in a file as *.key and windows will not open this file. How to open a *.key file?

I saw the url you sent me and it is quite long and hard to determine exactly which part is the license key I need to enter.

Lastly, the instructions say to "copy the key to the application folder." I apologize as I am not that computer saavy as to understand this. Where exactly do I copy it (to one of the files in the folder or just to the folder?) and how would I go about doing that copy and paste?

Thank you - I'm looking forward to using the program.

SagaxSoft Support @John:
Copy attached key file into the application folder.
Save the attachment to disk and then copy the file into the APPLICATION FOLDER.
The easiest way to do it - right-click the key file and select Copy in the context menu, click the "Open app folder" button in the "Register Total Directory
Report" dialog box (Select "Register..." from "Help" menu) and then PASTE FILE to the displayed application folder.
(To do this, right-click on the background and select Paste in the context menu).

John User I purchased this program on 12/15/15 and have to say it is one of the best programs I have and a steal at this price. I use it often and especially like the ability to print the detailed reports I am able to define and generate using this software. Really the description of the program above is insufficient because it does so much more. I learn some new capability every time I start up the program. Do yourself a favor and download the trial version and check it out. IMO it is well worth the ten bucks they are asking for it.

PS. I did have a slight problem understanding how to register the program with the key they sent me, but their support staff was instantly responsive and got me squared away on that.

Keyboard Cowboy I ordered this last night and payed for it via PayPal. At the end of the transaction I got a message "An error occurred during the generation of your license key.
We will contact you within the next 24 hours by e-mail and provide the necessary information. Thank you for your patience!".

So far I have not heard from anyone and do not have a license code. Can someone look into this and get the code to me?

Bob

SagaxSoft Support Apparently there was some problem in the MyCommerce/share-it! key server.
They will contact us if necessary.
If necessary, we will send the license keys themselves.

Michael R. At the time, I want a Report, do I have to have the drive connected or is it possible to create a 'virtual dir' (or catalog) (containing all relevant data) and create the report out of these data

and so e.g. find files before connecting to all external drives just to find out where the file is..

MAS Tried to purchase deal with FireFox, Edge, and Internet Explorer all don't work as noted by Gary User. I'm not going to install Chrome to make this purchase. Seems like a nice product for the price, but kind of foolish to have to install another browser to get to pay for the software.
Don't know SagaxSoft, but trying to purchase with any of the above noted browsers puts me in a perpetual loop of going back to PayPal and getting back to buy screen, then back to PayPal.
Don't know what browser you're using, but none of the above work.

MAS That sounds like a plan:-) With Gary's comments I think we covered the browser front (except Opera!). Have made a number of purchases via BitsDuJour and have never had this kind of issue...ever, so likely something is amiss with MyCommerce.
Still, interesting product with some value- I downloaded the trial but it is hamstrung without a real license.

Gary Smith @SagaxSoft Support:

After reading through all of the comments, I noticed a couple things that were never addressed fully. One is the changelog, and the other is the version number being offered is not stated here or on the developer's website. A changelog with release dates and version numbers would help to solve this problem. I am hoping you can resolve these two issues.

From the Older Comments:
Dec 30 2012 at 9:53am
2) Looked on your site, can't find any changelogs. And can't find n° for current version either!

You answered the user's other questions, but did not answer about the changelogs, so the user re-commented:

Dec 30 2012 at 4:47pm
2) You forgot to say where I could find the changelogs

That request was never answered as well.

I too cannot locate the changelog for the program. Can you please explain where we can find this?

The question about the version number still is ambiguous; your website does not state what version is being offered. As a result, people are going to ask. A Changelog would help to answer these types of questions. I find it very odd that a software developer has software with different versions, but does not publish what the current version is, or anything about the previous versions.

On Dec 28, 2015, SagaxSoft Support stated that version 8 would be out in January 2016:

Dec 28 2015 at 7:50am
SagaxSoft Support @Heidi-Ann Kennedy-Fourkiller:
Please make sure you running the latest version (7.7) and contact our support if you have any problems with TDR.
Major update (version 8) will be available next month.
SagaxSoft -

As of November 2016, there was no indication that a version 8 had been released, which prompted more questions about the version being offered:

Nov 10 2016 at 4:01am
Bertie Brummel Hi,
which version is sold here, 7.9 or higher?
I noticed that the trials offered here and on the official website have the same file siize but different names?

Nov 10 2016 at 4:30am
SagaxSoft Support Hi Bertie,
All distribution files are identical and 7.9 is the latest release version of Total Directory Report.
SagaxSoft -

As of 2018-04-05, when the user goes to purchase from the SagaxSoft website, the MyCommerce/Digital River page shows that the version is 7.0:
Version: 7.0

If there are sub-numbers in the version number, can you please inform us what that version is; and could you please place that information on your website?

The Trial download available from BitsDuJour is named afr_setup.exe but the Trial download from your site is named tdr_setup.exe. SagaxSoft Support stated the distribution files are identical, but these two files are not the same file because the md5 values are different:
afr_setup.exe 9E5E5054 FA4022F2 9F7AA559 8750583E
tdr_setup.exe EE5A1E89 16859628 E89D062A 3C6558A2
Since both are Trials, what is the difference between these two files?

When a user updates their software, what download should they use? is it the SagaxSoft Trial version, or some other file?

Nov 10 2016 at 1:08pm
Heidi-Ann Kennedy-Fourkiller Still a very satisfied user for some years now, but heard at one time that version 8 was near. . . do you have an ETA when it will be out and what new features if any will be added.

That question went unanswered. Could you please also address these version number questions?

In order to recommend your software to others, there needs to be some assurance that the developer is upfront with users, and will diligently ensure users are not ignored.

I can assure you that BitsDuJour users love Lifetime Upgrade software, but at the same time, that means we are about to develop a relationship that could last for the rest of our lives. Therefore, I sincerely hope that you will consider being totally transparent with the version numbers, and the product's history.

MAS Gary,
Brilliantly and concisely stated. My view is you've represented many of us who've download the software and having gotten through the purchase process ( Mike Lively's solution works - you have log in with your Commerce ID and PW to not get stuck in the time warp), and have no idea regarding version.
I do like the program and its features.
I would hope the author(s) recognize most, at least on this site, see value in their product and would benefit by addressing the questions you've so clearly raised that require a response.
Congrats on a well articulated posting.

- Both installation files (downloadable from our website or a link from BDJ) are functionally identical.
- We will take into account your comments.

Peter Jackson I have been successful in installing version 7.7 of this software on my computer but it remains unregistered because when I try to copy the key to the application folder I am told that access is denied. Do I need to purchase this version or is there a secret to copying the key in the earlier version. What version is this? Do I need to purchase this version to update my version? I tried to send an email using an email address I was provided but my emails bounce back to me unread.

SagaxSoft Support Peter Jackson,
No need to buy current (7.92) version.
You can install the application in any folder (or create a portable copy: http://www.sagaxsoft.com/..._act_2.htm) if you do not have administrator rights for the ProgramFiles folder.

Yosh M Downloaded the trial. Not impressed. The duplicate files function doesn't seem to check for true duplicates - only match on filename & maybe filesize. Difficult to see what is supposedly a duplicate of what.

The SubFolder size report seems to be only one-level deep. Can't drill down to find the underlying culprits.

Other functions are similarly not particularly user-friendly.

too bad. I guess I'll take a pass.

Thanks.

SagaxSoft Support Yosh M,
The duplicate search function uses a cyclic checksum (CRC32). Not just a comparison of file names and sizes.

HJ User I do not think anything can compare to "Everything", the free application from VoidTools, for the purposes of:

a) locating files across all attached drives;

b) Instantly seeing what apps and folders are taking up disk space;

c) Determining what apps and files are duplicated, using name and/or size and/or type. It does not have a crc function, but that is pretty much made up for by the instantaneous access to all of the data and to use imaginative sorts and criteria to probe the data. Moreover, it permits you to store search criteria as a macro, so that you can instantly do precisely the same searches forever into the future.

d) While within the application you can open, delete or move any of the millions of files you may have on your computer or network.

Heidi-Ann Kennedy-Fourkiller Had this program for so many years, two months ago I finally given up and lost faith in this company, even though I have a lifetime license. Never updates, very outdated and needs vast improvements to be the worthy program that it once was.

Back in 2015, and keep in mind I had this for some time even then. They made this comment to us here.

"SagaxSoft Support @Heidi-Ann Kennedy-Fourkiller:
