Michael R. When thinking about to change my OS from XP to Win7 there was a need to change my backup-tool too. My old one, a highly configurable one, was only able to handle FAT(32) patitions and no NTFS partitions. XP allows a boot-partition to be FAT32, win7 - as far as I know - not any longer.

So I tried out some backup tools and finally decided to use TrueImage 2010 + PlusPack on the last BDJ-offer. Main reasons were (1) it did work without problems (at least with the created boot-cd; as with some other tools I had difficulties backing up C: from inside windows (I only tried it once)) and (2) it offered incremental backup when booting from the created CD.

I now use version 2010 some months when recreating my new win7-system; from scratch on, because of no auto-update possibility from XP (x32) to Win7 (x64). So when having installed some new programs I either do a backup or a restore. And this is done blazingly fast...

But there are some things, that are a little inconvenient and perhaps they have changed from v2010 to 2011, so I would have a real reason to buy again. If not said otherwise all these concern v2010, when booting from the created CD:

- Having a non-us-keyboard, it turned out, that the CD always assumed that the keyboard has a US layout. So it is difficult to enter data, especially chars like backslash, asterisk (*), etc. Why not checking which keyboard is in use when creating the CD and loading an appropriate keyboard-driver at the start? Is there a possibility to re-create the CD and do this manually?

- I always backup complete drive C: doing an incremental backup. I'm wondering that the file-exclusions always have to be reentered and are not overtaken as default from the last backup. So I always explicitely have to delete the masks being in there and add the files \hiberfil.sys and \pagefile.sys. Of course you can't save these files to the CD, but you could perhaps save it to the backup-files itself. As long as some other preferences, e.g. the compression-quality, etc.. I read about the addition of the profiles in the new version 2011. Are they usable too when booting from CD?

- As said above my former backup-tool did not run from inside windows. As explanation for that, they said, this was, because it is not possible to backup files correctly/consistently, when they were still open, which is the case when windows is running on the same partition you want to backup. That sounds completely logical for me. So how do you (and other similar tools) handle these files when running from inside windows itself? Aren't they saved at all or just partly. How could there come out a reliable and consistent backup at all? I really would like to have an idea about how this can be done at all. Until than I surely will stay at the CD-boot.

- At the beginning I wondered, why it is not possible to exclude complete directories from being backuped. (Is it?) E.g. when backing up my windows-system, I didn't want my DATA-directory is backuped too, because I do not want it to be overwritten with old data when I just wanted to restore windows. As I understand it now the reason is probably that, if a user would be able to exclude a complete directory from being backuped, this directory would not exist any more when a restore has been done, because a restore does virutally delete the complete partition and rebuild it. Doing it this way, the backup-process can be done so fast. Is this assumption correct?

My solution to this DATA-directory mentioned above was to move it to another partition. Unfortunately win7 uses it's own data-directories on drive C: too, not only MyDocuments, MyMusic,... (which would be moveable too), but also data-directories a user might not be aware of and would wonder after a restore, where his datas being gone (e.g. AppData). So I really would appreciate a good way how to create 'good' backups in the sense, how to separate a system-backup from data-backups in a good way... Perhaps such a manual already exists and you could tell where...

A last question to incremental backups: Suppose I have a backup-sequence consisting of backup files a, b, c (representing the former incremental backups) and I create a new incremental backup with backup file d. When doing this, stay the former backup-files (a, b, c) untouched? (If yes, it should be possible to delete file d by hand - e.g. if it turned out, that the system-state this last backup represents was not perfect - and do a new incremental backup using files a,b,c, shouldn't it? Also it would be possible to secure the former backups to CD in case of a harddisk-crash...)

Of course I would really appreciate if you would point out, if the former issues did approve in v2011 vs. v2010.

Thanks a lot and I'm looking forward for your answers...

Az Wiz @Michael R.
Quite a few backup programs will backup files in use. They take advantage of XP/Vista/7 service called VSS or Volume Shadow Service (Google it for a detailed explanation). In a nutshell, windows takes a "snapshot" of those files which then can be copied by the b/u program. Others like Paragon have their own kernel mode drivers (hotcore.sys) that provide the same functions. As an aside, most all of these only work with the NTFS file system. I can't imagine why you would be using XP and the old FAT32. You limit your performance as well as the maximum file/HD size by doing so.

I can't address the rest of your other questions at this time, but this should give you a little more info on how it works.

PS I've been using Acronis since ver 8.0. about 3/4 yrs ago.

Acronis Inc. RE: Michael R.
1. Having a non-us-keyboard, it turned out, that the CD always assumed that the keyboard has a US layout. So it is difficult to enter data, especially chars like backslash, asterisk (*), etc. Why not checking which keyboard is in use when creating the CD and loading an appropriate keyboard-driver at the start? Is there a possibility to re-create the CD and do this manually?

- Thank you for pointing this out.
Actually our bootable media has US layout enabled by default. In some localizations it's replaced by the media language layout. The best solution here is to contact support directly with the license of the product: this data will help to find out what product localization you're using, and solve the inconvenience.

2. I always backup complete drive C: doing an incremental backup. I'm wondering that the file-exclusions always have to be reentered and are not overtaken as default from the last backup. So I always explicitly have to delete the masks being in there and add the files \hiberfil.sys and \pagefile.sys. Of course you can't save these files to the CD, but you could perhaps save it to the backup-files itself. As long as some other preferences, e.g. the compression-quality, etc.. I read about the addition of the profiles in the new version 2011. Are they usable too when booting from CD?

- Unfortunately at the moment this functionality is not present on the bootable media. Rest assured that your comment was forwarded to the Development team, and they will look into the possibility of implementing this functionality in future updates.

3. As said above my former backup-tool did not run from inside windows.

- Our software uses SnapAPI technology: at the very start of the backup the product takes a "picture" of the hard drive sectors (takes a snapshot), divides the snapshot to pieces and assigns hash value to each of them. When the products starts the backup process, it verifies the hash values from snapshot with the hash values of the drive, and proceeds with backing up data. So in case the files was changed since the snapshot creation, it will have another hash value on the drive, the product will detect it and backup the changed file. This allows us to backup running Windows without data loss. You can find more information about the SnapAPI in this KB article (http://kb.acronis.com/content/1512)

4. At the beginning I wondered, why it is not possible to exclude complete directories from being backuped. (Is it?) E.g. when backing up my windows-system, I didn't want my DATA-directory is backuped too, because I do not want it to be overwritten with old data when I just wanted to restore windows. As I understand it now the reason is probably that, if a user would be able to exclude a complete directory from being backuped, this directory would not exist anymore when a restore has been done, because a restore does virtually delete the complete partition and rebuild it. Doing it this way, the backup-process can be done so fast. Is this assumption correct?

- Yes, your assumption is correct. Restore, actually, doesn't delete the complete partition: it simply overwrites the space with the data in it. Thus all the information, which's not present in the backup, will be lost. Our Customers have the ability to exclude the data from the system partition backup by specifying the following path: C:\Data\, - but we strongly recommend not to do it, as all the information on the system drive is important for stable functioning of the computer. If you exclude the data from being backed up, you will have to restore it manually later on (in case you have created a backup of it).

5. Also it would be possible to secure the former backups to CD in case of a hard disk-crash...)

- Incremental backup actually doesn't create an image of the changed data: it contains the information of the changes made since the last full or incremental backup. Thus in case you're creating the D incremental, it will register the changes made since the time when the C backup was created, and A, B, C backups won't be affected.
Incremental backups are designed in such a way that they can exist in a chain only. Thus in case you delete B or C backup, the D archive will be unrestorable.
As a workaround one can use the differential backup: it contains the information of the changes made since the time of the last full backup. The creation of the new differential doesn't affect the previous backups, as well as the older backups can be safely deleted - it will not affect the recovery. Please find more details regarding the full, incremental and differential backups here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1536

Acronis Inc. Hi, Raymond.

Sure Acronis True Image can perform the backups in the sector-by-sector mode. This method is useful if a partition being backed up is not supported by the Acronis product or is corrupted. In this case, all sectors of this partition are included in this image and will be restored. Please note that this image will contain not only sectors with data but also sectors that are empty. As a result, this image will be equal in size to the disk being imaged, as there will be no data compression.
You can find more details about this option in the Acronis True Image Home User's Guide (http://www.acronis.com/do.../userguide), Chapter 3.11.2 Image creation mode, p. 61.

Mike G @ Peter L: I've also experienced bugs with Acronis TI 2009 and 2010. While few applications are 100% bug free, companies that release major upgrades on a forced (usually annual) schedule are especially prone to bugs. With backup software this can be catastrophic.

New versions of Acronis TI seem to work flawlessly on many configurations, but fail miserably on others. Thus the odd mixture of 5 and 1 star reviews forming a kind of reverse bell-shaped curve on sites like Amazon.

Acronis TI is actually one of the better backup tools IMO--once the bugs are worked out. So even after purchasing an upgrade, I've taken to waiting 3 to 6 months before installing it, meanwhile keeping an eye on the support forums.

Tomasz Lisowski I can see advantages of Acronis TI for file-based backups, while for sector-by-sector backups I would rather use different tools. Image for Windows (Terabyte Unlimited) for example can skip empty sectors as well as the hibernation file or the pagefile as an option. Moreover, the image is compressed, so it won't take as much space as the partition being backed up. However, it does not do file-based backups at all, so if you are interested in just one tool doing all, you may choose Acronis TI.

I also don't understand the fixed yearly release schedule. I don't want to be a beta-tester if my intention was to purchase a fully functional product...

David Drane I have had TI 2009,2010 and already have 2011 (with plus pack. 2009 version had bugs that were not fixed until the 2010 release and the same with the 2010 version which had a show stopper bug in that created faults when you tried to access password protected backups. That was fixed but you had to buy 2011 version to get the fix.

Version 2011 doesnt appear to have any major bugs. A couple of minor glitches here and there (mostly on the UI). I am angry that you have to buy new versions to get bug fixes that cant be fixed during that year. However, 2011 version does work well. It works with bitlocker and truecrypt (the backup if restored will be unencrypted). However, try and decide doesnt work on encrypted systems. I have tested it by backing up onto different hardware and that worked well. Nonstop backup is effective.

I would say that it is worth having as this version does exactly what it says. Its a shame that those that bought 2009 and 2010 had to beta test it at cost first. Also do be prepared that if you identify a bug, you may have to buy the next version before you get a fix.

is there any disadvantage when buying the english version for german users (apart from the english menus) - e.g. regarding support or keyboard-use?

Unfortunately in germany the upgrade price for current users pn acronis-store is much higher than buying the product as a new full version from a trusted shop (and this of course still even higher than bitsdujour-price). Selling the upgrade at a higher price in germany than the full version is not very user friendly.

Tomas T Been using Acronis True Image 2010 for about an year with Windows 7 64-bit and been rather satisfied with it. However have to agree with a previous poster that the program still does have some issues with it, Acronis TI products seem to ship out in unpolished condition. .

Minor issues a side, one major issue I faced with TI 2010 was that it did not support SSD drives alignment out of the box. I had to manually format the drive in Windows 7 before moving the OS image in the new drive with TI 2010 to get the SSD alignment in order. Has this already been fixed with TI 2011?

You can surely use for restoring the Acronis True Image Home 2011 with Plus Pack add-on for restoring the image onto the machine with the new motherboard. All you need to do is find the drivers of the mboard on vendors site (or contact their support team for them), unpack them to be in *.eom and *.inf format, place them in one folder and point Acronis Universal Restore on that folder when processing the recovery. Please find the detailed Acronis Universal Restore instructions with step by step screenshot here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/13671, - you may find this information useful.

Acronis Inc. Hi T T.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, this is an important question.
It's true that SSD alignment wasn't fully supported in Acronis True Image Home 2010, but we have it improved in Acronis True Image Home 2011. You can see it stated in this KB article related to SSD support question: http://kb.acronis.com/content/2699
Acronis True Image Home 2011 also contains the fixes for Acronis True Image Home 2010 major issues, and we have an update for it (Acronis True Image Home 2011) upcoming, so it may contain the solution to the problems you've faced as well.
Still we're a bit concerned about the tech difficulties you report, and I'd appreciate if you could submit a support request (http://kb.acronis.com/content/8153) with the details of the issue, and sent its number to one of the Forum Moderators : http://forum.acronis.com/

Max Murkel New Acronis releases are almost always buggy. I bought my TI 2011 Home licenses (boxed) from a distributor and was advised, not to install from the boxed CD but to use a separate "backup"-CD. The boxed TI would conflict w/ the plus pack..........

@ Michael R.:

To avoid the "exclude folders" problem you described, it's a good idea to separate your HDD(s) in several partitions.

C: for the OS
D: for Programs
E: for Data

or similar. IMNSHO the C:\ drive should be used for the OS and perhaps drivers only. Saves a lot of trouble in case you need to restore the OS.

E. J. Roman, thank you for the response regarding the dead system backup. I do have one additional question though.

Could I take the hard drive from the "dead" system and attach it to a system via external link (USB or Firewire) and create a correct disk image backup or due to how low of a hardware level access this form of backup would need would I need to attach the drive directly to a host adapter (PATA or SATA connection) located on the motherboard?

Basically I would prefer to purchase the software and install on my laptop but unlike a desktop machine I have no way to internally connect a hard drive and I know diagnostic software (for example) needs the ability to "speak" directly to the hardware.

Thanks in advance.

Acronis Inc. Dear Faisal Salem.

We believe that every customer that complaints is giving us an opportunity to make things right. And since we incorporate this feedback into our approach, we will be better able to meet clients needs and thereby be more successful in our venture.

Unfortunately due to the lack of information it's hard to identify the exact cause of the issue. We have carefully checked our internal databases, and found no mention of a known issue that would match the information you've specified. According to the description provided, it's highly possible that there was a drivers conflict. Usually it happens when you install the product over the running third party protection software (antivirus, backup solution, firewall, etc.). This can be easily solved, all you need to do is to contact support directly as mentioned here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/8153

You can surely attach the HDD via USB or Firewire and perform a backup. Just please note that in case you're backing up the dead drive, we cannot guarantee that that data on it is still safe.

In case you're backing up working HDD with OS from another system, you will need to use ATIH Plus Pack for restoring the image onto the dissimilar hardware.

Steven Avery Hi,

Interesting exchanges. Personally I pass on image backups because if I hit a crash I want to reinstall the OS to get a freshly minted system. This is the major conceptual issue to consider in determining whether you want an image backup or a data backup .. making sure, though, that you have the OS CDs available and do not mind an OS reinstall.

Having images available as an auxiliary alternative can be helpful, and there are cases where a person does many installs (e.g. test environments) where the image concept is vastly superior. Plus it is nice to have an image of the early system after the basic OS reinstall, with a clean system, to save some time. All that being said, a person should realize that an image reinstall brings forth any weaknesses in the earlier system (e.g malware or OS instabilities or slowdowns) as well as the quick strenghth of getting up fully and quickly.

For those going the image route, no doubt Acronis is a top comparny. The idea of bug fixes being placed only in upgrade releases after one year is unfortunate. May I suggest the comparny consider a compromise, and go a second year where they still do PTFs for the earlier system even for those not upgrading. The two-year window would feel much less onerous.

Thanks.

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Also, I want to mention some things. First of all, I am using Acronis True Image and Acronis Disk Director Suite since 2005 and love it.
However, there are also things that I really don't like.

Refering to what you said "all you need to do is to contact support directly" I must say, unfortunately its not always good. It may depend from who answers, and for which language. My experience was not a good one. Last year I had a problem with Disk Director. In the past I did often adjust my partitions, out of Windows, then Disk Director rebooted, made the changes and then I could boot to Windows. Worked perfectly. Nowadays, with the same version, same unchanged hardware conditions, this does not work anymore. Acronis now accepts the changes, reboots, shows the process of all changes and says "successfull". But back in Windows it has indeed done nothing.
So I emailed the support and the woman there told me to install the updated version, did and same thing. Then she said its because I must have an USB card reader and told me to deactivate it. Now that does not make any sense. I have a card reader, inbuilt into my PC, which was also there from the very beginning, and never disturbed anything. Now, same version/updated version, same condition - does not work. Huh, makes no sense, why shouldn't the same thing work now that worked in the past under the same condition. Anyway, I tried, deactivated, but as expected it did not help at all. I asked her, if it could be, that even the actual version is not properly adjusted to the SP3 in Win XP (as thats the only thing that is different between past and current). She did not even consider that but insisted on the card reader (not even reading that I said, I did deactivate it but no change). I asked her to ask the developers who certainly should know. But she did not ask anyone, though very obviously she had no clue herself. Finally I used the boot CD version which worked. But its not a real solution as the product should also work out of Windows as it is intended and was before. With support, I went to nowhere. Maybe that is because I got the German support (though I first emailed in English, but probably due to my address and IP, it switched to the German section). The support lady was clearly incompetent and did not even bother to have someone else who knows, to take over. Its no problem if someone does not know the solution, nobody on earth can know everything. But in such a case, especially if working in customer support for customers who paid for the product, if a support person does not know, she MUST aks someone else who DOES know. She didn't. Bad, bad, very bad.

2. Meanwhile also the CD version is unusable, since I changed my mouse and Acronis does not recognize it. Though its an ordinary optical USB mouse, nothing special.

3. Last month I run into a major problem with True Image. Okay, old version from 2005 (version 9), but THAT should never happen. I create images every month and diff. images each week. But had never to restore one. Until now. Unfortunately I started True Image out of Windows, thinking it would reboot with its restore software in the RAM disk, as it should be. Well, it took my settings, rebooted - did not recognize my mouse and it was a hassle to control it with keyboard alone - then did the restore. Okay so far. BUT the surprise came, when I tried to reboot, no option for that on the GUI. Only way was power off and on. Expected to arrive to my usual Windows boot menu. But no, there was the Acronis restore GUI again. It turned out that Acronis did overwrite the MBR with its restore assistant!! And there isn't even any option to boot into Windows on that GUI. That is such a huge bug its incredible. I thanked heaven that I have the Rescue Kit cd from Paragon, so I could easily fix the MBR.
If I were an unexperienced user, I would have been completely lost and helpless, in panic. Something like this just must never happen.
In the very past before I knew Acronis I used Image Magic /Partition Magic and even such an old program always put itself into the RAM disk on rebooting to the programs GUI, never ever overwrote the MBR.
That said, I really hope that is not anymore in True Image 2011.

Ms Julie I understand that Acronis will provide support for the first 30 days after "purchase." One would hope that recovering from a drive disaster would not occur -- ever, to say nothing of the first 30 days.

My question is: what happens if, having made backups in a dutiful manner, on trying to re-image your hard drive after a disaster a problem occurs and you need help? Does Acronis host support forums?

Acronis Inc. Hello Sabine.

Unfortunately this issue is related with VAT. The discount for this coupon is generated for two currencies: USD (29,99) and Euro (29,95). But since the store is American the VAT is added for non-US customers and converted into Euros in some improper way which cannot be adjusted internally. The only thing we can do here is make the price include the taxes but this will break pricing in USD.

I understand 33% difference between 26.82 Euros and 35.68 Euros but please note that anyway this is cheapest deal available through our online stores for European customers. For instance we now have a promotion on www.acronis.eu in terms of which ATI2011+ Free Plus Pack is being offered for 49.95 Euros.

Sabine N. Hi Roman,
Thanks for the explanation. However, you say "The discount for this coupon is generated for two currencies: USD (29,99) and Euro (29,95). " - that does actually show that this problem is not related to the VAT but the mistake is already before VAT: USD29,99 does not equal Euro 29,95, as its not 1:1. Its at this point where there obviously no conversion is included.
That's actually not fair to pay more here just because being some miles away on this planet :-)

Anyway, there is an easy solution that I am a bit amazed you did not mention. It does automatically show the currency in Euro, but if changed to USD, then it does transfer the correct price to the payment. I paid with USD using Paypal and Paypal does the conversion into Euros in the correct way.
But maybe not everyone will think that far and then pay more than they should, which I don't find okay.

Stephane M Hello,

What does "Free upgrades for 1 month" mean?
If I buy it now and bugs are found (there are always bugs) and fixed only after the 30-day period, does it mean I would not get any fixes without paying for an upgrade even though it is just a minor release?

Thanks.

Dave B Hello
I cannot work out why when the advertised price is $29.99, it becomes almost $36 at checkout - is this because US tax has beed added? If so it should show clearly that the advertised price is $29.99 PLUS TAX. In my case this is a difference of £5 GBP
Having said that this is still a very good offer, and I will be taking advantage of it.

Warren Russell Hi Roman,
That's very disappointing. Most companies offer good deals when a product first comes out to stimulate quick upgrading. It sounds like with Acronis, when I receive an announcement of a new product along with an upgrade offer, I should not upgrade at that time but should wait until a better deal comes along....

Brian User Can anyone quickly (!) answer why the combination is showing up at $49.98? It shows $19.99 for the upgrad and $29.99 for TI. I'd like to buy this, but it seems that the deal is off.

@Dave B - It depends where you are as to how the tax is applied, in the US you don't have tax added and in the UK you do. Also we show the regular retail price as $79.98. If you have to add tax to that then the retail price is actually higher at $95.18, so you're still saving!

Mike G Hello. The license policy seems ambiguous: "Licensed per user for non-concurrent use only, allowing transfer of a license to another owned computer. Online license activation is required without a hardware footprint."

If I have TI installed on my desktop and laptop, and schedule one to backup at 8AM and other other to backup and 10AM isn't that technically "non-concurrent use"? Or is the policy really "Licensed per machine, allowing transfer of a license to another owned computer"? I'm pretty sure what the answer will be, but please clarify for us.

Mike, according to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer you are going to backup or restore. You can move the license to the second machine in case the original computer will not be in use in future.

bob roos If you plan on backing up to a networked drive be very careful and sure that it will work. I am not able (using the latest version) still to back up to any networked drive. Their forums seem full of similar complaints. I have been trying to accomplish this since 2011 came out.

It works great to a local drive.

Also, my personal opinion is that the user interface for 2011 was a step backward. The old "Tasks and Logs" was an easy way to find out what you had made for backups. Now there is "My backups" which I find awkward at best. For instance is gives the name of the backup followed by the phrase "not backed up yet" Under that it says "Total 0 bytes" and a little further under that it says "The backup was successfully completed....."

Which is it? Not backed up and 0 bytes or successfully backed up?

(I am frustrated with the product).

Frank Stephens I'm another owner of Acronis True Image Home 2010 with Plus Pack (purchased here) who never used the product because of numerous reported issues and lack of support for RAID, which wasn't added until around the 2011 release. The features are nice, the price is excellent, but I can't trust it. If you need to uninstall Acronis, make sure that everything gets uninstalled, pieces can crash your system if you install other backup software. I went with StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop, which is pricey but I couldn't be happier. As usual, you can download trial versions. It's actually 3 products which you need to download separately, ShadowProtect Desktop, the ImageManager, and the Recovery Environment (CD/DVD/Thumbdrive, etc.) You need to download the documentation for each separately, and the Recovery Environment (apart from the documentation) is only available after purchase. ShadowProtect has an excellent reputation for support and reliability.

Michael R. As stated in a posting on the last offer of TrueImage here on BDJ, I was/am using v2010 and running it from a Boot-CD.

So I have a question/issue, which concerns v2010, but am also curious, if someone else using 2010/2011 has the same problem and has a way to solve it, if it is known and if v2011 has it.

Having made some incremental backups for some months about one a week on another partition, I found out, that the complete size of all files was beyond, what you want to secure on DVDs, i.e. would need about 20 DVDs or more. So I decided to save only the first backups I made on DVD (and running another new backup for the current state, but that is another stoy...). I thought this would be quiet easy, i,.e, I would only have to save all the files up to this date, I want to have saved and the other files with the newer dates would be not necessary and can be discarded. (To be sure I moved them to another directory before really deleting them).

But as it turned out this thought was not correct. While I tried to restore the last remaining backup, after starting correctly TrueImage came up with an error-message: WARNING! SPECIFY LOCATION OF THE VOLUME 87. Unfortunately it does not say, which file it expects, so I was not be able to figure out, which one I could copy back to this backup-directory (and I have to save on the DVDs) to make a restore running correctly. I think adding this information would be either essential and would need a minimum on programming-effort to add. (Additionally it would be nice to allow the user at this time to specify the source of this file, so it would be possible to have backup-files on different directories/devices in case the space is not enough; same for backups: if the space on the backup-directory is insufficient, instead of breaking up, it would be nice to allow the user to specify a diffent directory where to continue the backup).

To sumarize the said above into one question, it would be:

If I have made some incremental backups B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 made inside one directory, which necessary files do I have to save to make sure I can restore B1, B2, B3 ( or better, which files do I NOT need to restore the last Backups B4, B5)? (As said, my assumption, this would be all files created at backup-time of B3 and earlier turned out to be wrong)

~
[I did not check, if this problem would still occur with the very last update of v2010, which was offered some weeks ago and I think it is a very good thing, if a firm offers bug-fixes for the former version(s) too, instead of forcing their curstomers to buy new upgrades, when having issues with old versions. It should be not something necessary to talk about, but quite often if a product is sold and a new version appears the support of the former one is ceased. So, I was positively surprised, when a new update appeard, even if I might not have been run into the fixed problems.

~~~~~~
Because I currently just use the created Boot-CD: Can you say something about the improvements in v2011 since v2010 concerning the v2011-Boot-CD?
Thanks a lot and also thanks for your answers last time.
bob roos I don't believe it has improved any in 2011. I ran into a situation where I copied files to my network drive (to make space) and tried to restore a file only copying what I thought were the right files. I got the same message -- mount the last volume (with no indication of what the file name was for that volume). I think I ended up copying everything back, but I am no longer sure.
Short answer is don't copy backups with increments around and expect to be able to restore them. At least this is my experience.
S B I've been happily using True Image for years and have been very happy with my three licenses for v2010, though I only use it in very conservative ways. I own licenses for v2011, but I'm waiting.
I've updated one machine to v2011 and I'm holding off on updating the other machines because I like v2010 better.
1) v2011 seems too "dumbed down" to me. It seems more inconvenient to control its settings, and some seem unavailable.
2) v2011 has installed services, including TrueImageMonitor that I haven't yet been able to take off automatic startup
3) v2011 has more automatic things that I cannot yet easily control.
TrueImage v2011 is a nice, very advanced product, but I like v2010 *very* much better.
Staley After being a registered Acronis customer since the product was True Image Home 2009, and having upgraded to almost every version including 2010 & 2011. I have to say I am very disappointed in the 2011 version. It has a slow UI, and for some reason, I keep getting errors in Window's logs (events logs) that the Acronis Scheduler had an error... there was nothing actively scheduled. I contacted Acronis support twice and neither tech seem to knowledgeable about their company's product.
One of them even told me that Acronis True Image's build in back-up (for local backups), their continuous back (also build-it) and the support for their on-line back-up apparently can't run at the same time, they get confused and lock up... which completely defeats wanting to have a continuous protected back-up (locally) while also schedule online off-site backups.
One thing I thought was odd was the Policy above stating... "Online license activation is required without a hardware footprint." As far as I know Acronis hasn't required online activation with any of the home products I have registered. I hope they aren't planning on starting, as that will be the final nail in the coffen for me as one of their customers.
On a positive note, I really use to like Acronis products. Light weight and all... what happen??? (BTW, if you could switch the Windows 7 "skin" in 2011, and default to the Windows provided GUI then that might help performance issues I mentioned above. But you can't.)
Milan Topolic It's hard to read all the complaints about the 2011 version (I am a hardcore Acronis fan). I hope all these bugs will be repaired in the next 2012 version and the design of "ATIH 2010 Plus" version will come back again (I agree "this is the coolest look"). If this 2011 offer could have been turned into a german version in any way I would have bought 4 licences today. But "Acronis Munich" says, it will stay an english version forever. Not even the next upgrades can change the language. So I suggest and please all relevant decision makers for all the next offers here not to exclude foreign languages (and buyers) anymore. If you have to look up too many english technical terms while working in a hurry everything gets even more hectic, and at the end you pay more by making mistakes than you save buying the english version. Long Live Acronis ! It's still the best.
Frank Stephens Gonzalo Martin Barrio, Mitchell Kastner, you should examine the product features. It depends upon what features are valuable to you. One of the big things that Acronis and ShadowProtect can do is near-continuous backups, which is one of a number of features that ShadowProtect had long before any of the other backup packages. You'll have to examine the features in Acronis, as I said I bought it but chose not to use it due to support issues related to what I need. Some particular things which I like about ShadowProtect are automatic resolution of backup-chain image dependencies (just select the image which you want to restore and ShadowProtect does the rest), writable backup images, near-painless hardware-independent restores, direct support for VirtualBox, mounting of backup images as virtual drives, excellent recovery environment, etc. Acronis can't do a number of those things, but it can do other things which ShadowProtect can't. ShadowProtect doesn't require any special partitions.
Acronis Inc. Hello Michael.
The Incremental backup is chain-dependent. Thus if you need to restore B4, you need to make sure that B3, B2 and B1 are present and valid, otherwise the B4 will be reported as corrupted. You can find the information regarding the backup types here: http://kb.acronis.com/content/1536
We also do not have any problems related to the bootable CD, so the issue you've faced might have been the conflict between the hardware and the Linux kernel drivers, so it's best to contact support in such cases. http://kb.acronis.com/content/8153
If to speak about the hardware conflicts:
our media is Linux-based. We have updated it's kernel version and uploaded the latest drivers for the latest modern hardware, so we don't expect any issues with it.
Anyway, should you encounter any inconvenience, contact support - they will provide you with the custom bootable CD.
Sputnik The first version I bought is Acronis True Image 10 and I bought two other versions : 2009 and 2010.
I work only with the 2009 version which is the best out of the 3 for me.
This 2009 version could be better but I really don't like the way the new versions are made.
First of all I really hate the graphic design of the new versions and I really can't work correctly or easily with the CD rescue which is showing ugly design and is very hard working with.
bob roos Roman Rtichshev said "...it's reliable as Windows 7 Backup."
Simply not so any more. In 1 minute I created a backup to my NAS and ran it. I have tried for months to do the same task with Acronis. Each time it fails with some unclear error. Furthermore, the old Win 7 backup setting had my old NAS name and I was able to change it in 5 seconds. Acronis will try to validate the name before letting me change it and so it has to time out.
Acronis has the POTENTIAL to be much better than the Win 7 backup, but it has to seriously address some issues before that can be the case.
Mine is not a unique case. Just read the forums. Networks and Acronis don't get along.
I don't intend to be Acronis bashing, I have used and liked the product for many years, but the last 2 year's releases have been functional disasters for me (and many others based on comments here and the forums). I tried to work with tech support, but the responses were slow in coming and not helpful and did not fix the problem. I am an experienced computer user and would be happy to work with tech support if they were seriously committed to seeing the issue all the way to completion.
Acronis are you ready to do that? Let me know the email address of a tech support person who will stick with it and I will give all the details. Thanks, Bob Roos
Michael R. Hello Roman,
thanks for your answer. Yes, I do know how a incremental backup works and I understand that it is chain dependent.
The scenario you describe is a possible error, which would occur if I restore the last backup of the chain B5.
But that's not my problem,. I want to restore a backup in the middle, e.g. B3 and throw all not necessary files away, but do not know which. As explained, when deleting the files newer than the date of B3, a strange error occured. I tried to explain my problem in detail above.
Is there a way to find out which file is meant by an error-message lke WARNING! SPECIFY LOCATION OF THE VOLUME 87?
Frank Stephens Mitchell Kastner, yes, Windows 7 will do full backups. Open the Control Panel. If it's set to view by category, then the very first item will be System and Security. Under that will be Back up your computer. Select that, and in the left pane at the top will be Create a system image. It will let you backup to (preferably external) drives, DVDs, or network locations. Although it will check for free space, in typical Microsoft fashion it's too dumb to select the external drive with the most free space, but you can select whatever drive you want (probably needs to be formatted as NTFS). Incidentally, I like Genie Timeline a lot but it failed on a restore (maybe they've fixed it by now) and with ShadowProtect I don't need it. Bucket Explorer was tempting but I thought that the online storage costs were too high and I don't have the upload bandwidth. I also purchased FolderTrack here, but as you say, I immediately discovered that it wasn't ready for primetime, but the developer does appear to be responsive, I'll give him some tips.
scott hamilton I was happy with Acronis products in the past, and agree that the recovery-disk backup/restore works flawlessly. The later versiosn of the UI leave a lot to be desired. True Image 9.1's UI was understandable. With Home 2011 I cannot find logs, just this "list of backups". When I launch Home 2011, it likes to go to lunch "Program Not Responding" for 20-60 seconds, and sometimes NEVER responds and I have to terminate it. Support for Home is lacking, I get directed to forum support only, or a Pay-Per-Incident support. No thanks.
David Volle Hi I'm a long time Acronis user, and bottom line there can be network issues SOMETIMES not for everyone, but when they crop up Acronis has been:
- VERY slow in helping
- Unable to solve the problem dispite many many attempts covering months and months and involving over 30 hours of troubleshooting.
(I spent the time because I used to believe in the product and wanted to be part of the solution, but they didn't really seem to care enough to even have a single tech stick with the issue, and days would pass between responses!)
I finally had to move the customer over to ShadowProtect just to stop the unending nightmare so Acronis cost me thousands of dollars, in the end to be fair they credited me for the 7 licenses I had purchased, but I will never get the time back or paid for.
If you think you will get support to solve problems you are mistaken, buy another product.
All that said, in many cases the product installs and works great, and at this price the risk is pretty small but buyer beware if you are one of the people it doesn't work for just throw it away don't waste your life waiting for Acronis support, if it doesn't work the first time in my experience it never will! I'll gamble cross my fingers and buy one for my wife's machine today.
Here's hoping!
bob roos Hi David, that pretty much sums up my experience. The recovery disk works better than the installed program, but it is a pita to have to kill everything and boot it so backups are not done as often as they could be.
Is there another disk image backup program that you would recommend?
Acronis Inc. @ Bob Roos.
Hello, Bob. We only provide 30 days of free support from the day of purchase. If Customer purchased the program just recently he needs to register his product in his account so that other support options were available for him.
More information is available in this KB article:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/8153
Every opinion is important for us and we are very grateful for positive and for negative comments. There is always satisfied and dissatisfied users. User reviews allow us to improve our product and make it more convenient for our users. Maybe now things are not perfect but we will certainly work to become better and to do maximum for our customers.
bob roos Hi Roman, IIRC I tried to get support in the 1st 30 days but basically got nowhere because the problem was so mammoth I didn't know where to start. For example when I installed 2011, I lost all my predefined backup schemes and had to start over building them. Also looking at the dozens of posts of similar problems with no resolution, I got discouraged and just decided to wait for the next update because surely with that kind of failure volume the problem would be fixed.
The next update did not fix it and the next did not and the 6696 level has not.
Just today I made a video of my attempt to back up to the Z (network) disk. Acronis insisted on asking for windows credentials (even though the disk was linked) and when I gave them (the way I log onto windows every day) It just flashed the screen with no message or any option but to cancel. And then when I did cancel, it took me all the way back to the main screen. I didn't even have the option to try another disk. Seems to me this is pretty basic stuff to get working correctly.
Perhaps as a show of good faith Acronis would open a special BDJ tech support option to get some stuff cleared up?
Stephen Cohen I bought the 2011 version, but after reading the user comments, I'm sticking with 2010 WITHOUT the Plus Pack which made 2010 unusable. Reminds me of Kaspersky Internet Security which was good until 2011 version which is a BIG PITA, flashing false positive warnings that are difficult to kill.
Randall Schoonhoven I'm a 25-year IT professional and have used Acronis TIH for about three years now, and I fully agree with Bob Roos -- stay away.
The product simply doesn't work for any but the most basic functions, and support is nearly non-existent. I want to like the product, but it has wasted so much of my time that I should bill Acronis. I have five 2010 licenses installed on five different machines (4 Win7, 1 XP), and cannot get it to consistently make a successful network (NAS) backup on any of them.
Other products I've used, e.g. Norton, Macrium, etc., do this with no problem, so it's not the systems -- it's the product. And when it fails, as it so frequently does, it never gives ANY useful troubleshooting info. Most other companies will at least engage with you for support via e-mail anytime after purchase, but not Acronis. After the initial 30 or 90 day period, you are simply on your own -- they don't want to have anything to do with you. You are left to scrabble away at their forums in the hope someone will take pity on you. Amazing!
If any of this seems exaggerated or untrue to anyone reading, you have only to visit the above mentioned forums and check almost any discussion thread. You will find expressed there almost unanimous anger, exasperation and disgust. Be so very ware.
Tomasz Lisowski It is quite hard to find the explicit license agreement on the Acronis website, but in their KB I have found an article http://kb.acronis.com/content/13555
There a free upgrade to version 2011 (from 2010) was granted to purchases of version 2010: (1) made within a month before the release of version 2011, and (2) at a full price.
It looks like it is not very likely we would get the upgrade to version 2012 for free, but we should probably wait for the vendor's reply to that issue.
Currently I don't have a SSD for a boot drive, but I've been seriously considering it. I would really dislike having to switch to another company for my disk imaging software.
Acronis Inc. Hello!
To Merle:
From Acronis Bootable Media most of the RAID controllers are supported (http://kb.acronis.com/content/11681) . However, this is a small chance that if the hardware is new our bootable media will not have the drivers for it.
In such situations we recommend to download (http://www.acronis.com/ho...trueimage/ ) and install the trial version ( http://kb.acronis.com/content/13418 ), create the bootable media (http://kb.acronis.com/content/14737 ) , boot from it and check if your RAID is detected.
If not, you can get in touch with our Support team (http://kb.acronis.com/content/8153 ) so that our Developers can fix this issue for you.
To Sukru: I have just double checked the buy-link and could not reproduce an issue. Where are you located? Can you please send me a screenshot of what you see in the cart to affiliatesacronis.com ? Please make sure that buy-link is visible on the screenshot.
Tony Jacobson I think people have misunderstood the document regarding SSD support (or maybe it's me). The document says that True Image Home 2011 has "full" SSD support, whereas the products not in the list do not. One of the limitations for the products not in the list is the 63 sectors offset during a restore.
As TI 2012 is listed as having "full" support, it implies that this limitation does not apply to it.
Stephen Cohen Kaspersky is known for its new versions to be bug-ridden, which it cleans up over time. But in the meantime, you will have all kinds of computer problems, hang-ups, sloooow operation, etc. Expect EXTREME AGGRAVATION.
2011 is a disaster!! If you want to buy it, you should do two things:
1) Make sure that future updates of the anti-virus files will work with the 2010 version.
2) After installing the 2011 version, uninstall it and install the 2010 version which does work well.
The Plus Pack is GARBAGE.
I will use the 2010 version as long as the updated anti-virus files work with it. Then I'll be buying something else.
Also: Online tech support is TOTALLY WORTHLESS!!! Telephone support is almost as bad. If you have problems, try the Forum, which is often good.
Techtoysavvy Acronis stuff has generally been good but ...
I bought this early this morning and installed it. When I installed I checked for newer versions. There were none. After I installed it, the software did an update check and wanted to download and install a new version. So either a new version came out this morning just after installation or the software link on this site is for older software AND the update feature has at least one bug.
Not a big deal, but this type of annoyance does not reinforce confidence for a product line that needs to be trusted. Update checks are such a simple thing that if you get it wrong it makes me wonder how you could get the complicated stuff to work.
Also after I upgraded to Disk Director 11 the program now just hangs after I open it. Disk Director 10 used to work.
Tsk, Tsk. It leaves the impression that things are going downhill.
Guy Good to aladdin T:
I think you are going to be disappointed if you are expecting a free upgrade to version 2012. The upgrade policy states it must be within 30 days of purchase. The lower price draws the customer in and most bugs aren't fixed in the current version if you do much reading. This way the buyer who wants a fix will buy the upgrade hoping that contains the solution to their issues.
I can understand new features are worthy of an upgrade fee, but it always bothered me when vendors charge for bug fixes. They made the mistakes and the customer suffers for it. When you go for a restore, it really needs to work everytime or backup software is fairly worthless. What time can you afford to have a backup-restore that doesn't work when called upon.
Michael R. At a last offer of TI2011 I asked a question about doing backups from the rescue-disc:
Here it is again, together with your answer:
2. I always backup complete drive C: doing an incremental backup. I'm wondering that the file-exclusions always have to be reentered and are not overtaken as default from the last backup. So I always explicitly have to delete the masks being in there and add the files \hiberfil.sys and \pagefile.sys. Of course you can't save these files to the CD, but you could perhaps save it to the backup-files itself. As long as some other preferences, e.g. the compression-quality, etc.. I read about the addition of the profiles in the new version 2011. Are they usable too when booting from CD?
- Unfortunately at the moment this functionality is not present on the bootable media. Rest assured that your comment was forwarded to the Development team, and they will look into the possibility of implementing this functionality in future updates.
Did your development-team gave some feedback about this point? Making a backup easier from the booting rescue-disc, would be a good reason for me to upgrade to a newer version (than 2010). I always need some minutes to reconfigure my incremental backups. Ideally this would be possible with 2 or 3 button-mouse-clicks... Perhaps there are any plans for v2012?
Thank you...
The download after you purchase from Cleverbridge is version 6857 June 1st and the download from the Acronis website is version 6868 June 30th for both True Image Home 2011 and Plus Pack.
Be sure to create an account on Acronis and register your serial numbers to download the latest versions from Acronis as 6868 addresses a number of improvements and issues.
List of issues fixed since the previous build (6857)
"Operation has failed. Backup validation Task execution failed" message appears on every Windows start.
New in build 6868
Windows 7 SP1 is now supported.
Better hardware support in Linux bootable media.
Techtoysavvy I did download from the Cleverbridge site and not the BDJ or Acronis site. So this is not the responsibility of BDJ. When I installed the version the installer asks if you want to check to see if there is a more recent version.This is good since I have the opportunity to download and install the latest version instead of wasting time installing the older version.
The update check did not indicate a more recent version until after I installed the older Cleverbridge version.
I admit I have been an Acronis user for year and I am registered on their site so I could have registered my software and downloaded the most recent version.
But hey, the installer offered to do the work for me so ....
Thomas Evans Can the program do a file backup to the cloud, specifically Skydtive?
Jul 22 2011 at 8:38am Copy Link
0
Techtoysavvy Yes, Thomas, in theory you could upload to Skydrive by simply mapping your Skydrive to a windows drive letter. In practice, I would not and do not use Acronis for this task.
Skydrive has a maximum filesize limit and of you choose to
upload to Skydrive then you need to make sure that Acronis is set to split the backup into multiple chunks.
Acronis also has to be able to handle only sending changed portions of files which is straightforward for incremental sync but harder if you merge images. The software will also need to handle connections that can terminate during the long time it takes to transfer the data. I suspect they uploading to Skydrive will depend on the protocol used to connect to the cloud drive.
This is not specific to ATIH but this caveat is intended for home users that want to backup to the cloud. Beware of your ISP data transfer limits on your unlimited usage accounts. If you start transferring images that are 10-50G you may run up against limits imposed by your ISP as well as other limits.
We bought the 2011 version a month ago for: $ 20 USD
The upgrade cost for the new 2012 version : $ 30 USD
Total cost for the upgraded version: $ 50 USD
After upgrade to the new 2012 version, the old version is useless.
I have been very loyal to Acronis and defended them on several occasion, but my loyalty is going out of the windows.
It is definitely something to think about considering purchasing another or this product product from this developer.
cynical consumer Last time I looked the official policy was free upgrade if a) purchased earlier version within 30 days of release of new one AND b). earlier version was purchased at Full Price.
But hey, public owned corps are beholden to their shareholders and quarterly profits. Everything is bottom line. Can't really expect anything else (appearances to the contrary are just camouflaged self-interest.)
Nonetheless. I always get the latest version a bit late for a couple of reasons:
1. Let the bugs in it get worked out.
2. If you wait, you will likely see a deal for upgrade w/ Plus Pack or a low price w/ Plus Pack for free.
Michael R. Will this work - perhaps with a free update - under Win8 too?
With the plugin, will there be a way - perhaps with a free update - to install Win8 and let TrueImage automatically transfer all applications from a win7-backup to win8?
Having TrueImage 2010 (and being quite happy with this version), I mainly use it - as in a old comment already said - to backup/restore with a created boot-CD: Are there any improvements in this kind of backup/restore-process? (E.g. under TI2010 all the options in an incremental backup have to be entered again and again with each backup.Also, it would be nice to have also non-US-keyboards directly supported.)
A little additional question: When backing up C: (from a created boot-CD) I always enter hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys to be excluded. Is that necessary at all or are they automatically excluded? And if they are automatically excluded, which files are automatically excluded too?
Pavi Johnson The reviews for this product on Amazon.com and Cnet are overwhelmingly negative. Users report major errors, including data loss and system corruption. These reviews are recent, ie. March and April 2012.
I have not tested due to these serious issues, however one should be extremely cautious and consult these user reports. I am not trying to "badmouth" this product, but rather help fellow Bits users to avoid a potential problem... refer to Cnet or Amazon if unclear.
Acronis Inc. Hello Michael,
Our software does not support Windows 8 at the moment, we do not have an ETA for this at the moment unfortunately. This article has additional info:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/31033
We cannot transfer applications to another system, our software does not have this functionality. There is more information about this here:
http://kb.acronis.com/content/19296
Bootable media functionality is still the same, we have not made any changes to the backup process.
Non-US keyboards as support for different languages in the bootable media? We do not have this option at the moment I am afraid.
The hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys files are excluded automatically to reduce backup size and speed up the backup/recovery process. No other files are skipped.
Justine Jordan This isn't for posting but rather to allow me to confirm the policy. Since I know that you moderate comments, I hope you might read this and respond via email. My experience with Acronis is that they license per computer except in certain cases such as their family pack. I just want to be sure that the policy is stated accurately. Pavi Johnson Hi, just to be clear I did not install even the trial version after the mayhem that I found when doing a 2 minute internet search:
7 of the last 10 reviews on Amazon give a 1 star review (the minimum rating), and site a variety of problems.
9 of 13 reviews on Cnet (the first says they didn't try the product) give a 1 star review. Two more give scathing 2 star reviews. They also site the following problems:
- Corrupted files
- Corrupted OS
- Refusal of Acronis to respond to mails
A backup software has a basic requirement to safely backup you files/system. Beyond that, it absolutely must not affect those files or your system. If it corrupts files or your system, this is dangerous and a vendor that doesn't support a product that corrupts a user's system is unacceptable.
Bitdujour should do their due diligence before offering products which have obviously caused many people distress AND lost affected their irretrievable data. They should absolutely not offer a backup software with a track record of causing users such negative consequences.
Please adjust your policies to do at least a perfunctory check of a software's reliability and impact on a user's system before offering it here. I have bought a lot of software here, and trust that any software I download and install will meet certain minimum criterion, and system or file corruption is clearly not acceptable for any user.
Best, /Pavi
Justine Jordan Roman,
Thanks for your response. The policy does state: "Acronis True Image Home 2012 (With Plus Pack Add-on) is licensed per user, so if multiple people are going to use Acronis True Image Home 2012 (With Plus Pack Add-on) they will each have to purchase a copy.." I figured it might turn out to be too good to be true and indeed it is.
The link you provided for the Family Pack has it discounted at $79.99 so it would be more of a savings to purchase 3 here for $59.97 and get the plus packs.
I was introduced to Acronis Image via Seagate Disc Wizard. I only used it to make images and restore them when needed, until I bought Acronis TI 2010 and discovered Try & Decide, which has been most useful. Luckily, I made an image before installing 2012. Since I cannot install it on my laptop and pc, I will just restore my pc back to the 2010 version and use 2012 on my laptop.
Thanks again for he clarification.
I actually use Acronis as part of my Doomsday scenario backup plan, which is as follows:
- 2 redundant 2TB external harddrives which I do rolling nightly backups onto.
- Incremental backups of critical data to cloud storage.
- Regular backups to three sets of physical media, one stored onsite, one offsite and one sent to a secret location several thousand miles away.
So in the event of a localized disaster or even a massive nuclear attack creating a huge electromagnetic pulse which would toast anything with a microchip I think we should still be able to recover and get you some nice deals on software.
Pavi Johnson On April 25th of this year (last time it was offered), I pointed out that about 75% of reviews for this version on Amazon/Cnet stated that they had files and/or OS corrupted using it, and did not get support from Acronis. However, BDJ and Acronis were silent despite my ample documentation that this appears to be a dangerous version.
A quick look today shows that for this version (latest version) on Cnet, 21 people gave 1 star, 4 gave 2 stars, 1 gave 3 stars and 1 gave 5 stars. Yes, 78% of users gave the lowest possible rating and 93% gave 1 or 2 stars (out of 5)! http://download.cnet.com/...68093.html
Why would BDJ offer software reported by a VAST MAJORITY of user reviews to corrupt their files? I would really like an answer to this as it is highly irresponsible.
I've had no problems with previous versions of Acronis. Once people backup their system they need to validate their image. No backup software is perfect.
Lito I have been using this since Dec 2011. I paid $29.99 for an "upgrade" with plus pack.
As far as the corruption issues go, I can tell you from personal experience with 2012 that I have had no issues. But I do not use all the features like nonstop backup, try and decide, etc. I only mainly use backup and rarely use the recover options. I recently used the recover with the plus option of Universal Restore when I just built my new rig a few weeks ago. And everything went fine. My new system drive went to a SSD so there were no SSD related issues that I ran into. Overall I am happy with the product.
In comparison to the older version, from around 2010 on or so, it does seem more bloated. I never timed the speeds of my backups so I can't really comment on if it's faster or slower now. But GUI wise and the number of services installed seems to have gone up since the release of the 2010 version.
The upgrades policy seems quite fair (remember it's UPGRADES not UPDATES). If they release Acronis TI 2013 in the next month you get that version upgrade free. Updates for the 2012 version you will get. I have gotten every update since I upgraded to the 2012 version in december and IIRC there were at least 2 over several months.
Just as a note I have had HD corruption issues on my old Abit motherboard PC. It was not any software's fault but a hardware issue that ONLY occurred when you had 4 sticks RAM installed. When that condition applied only small ranges of memory would get corrupted and cause files written to drives to be corrupted. I only mention it because I discovered this "hardware bug" when testing a software raid problem I had. It seemed random so I thought it was a software bug, it wasn't till I started finding corrupt files randomly every now and then after a simple copy command that I did a full system diagnostic and found the issue. (note abit stopped support so no fix was issued, so only workaround was to pull one chip)
digitaltrix Hello Roman,
I want to purchase this deal but I wanted clarification on the upgrades policy as many others have asked.
It seems that Lito and I have it correct but I need confirmation from you as a representative of the deal from Acronis.
Please clarify this policy as on the Acronis website, it mentions that any minor upgrades (or updates as put by LITO) known also as build numbers are free of cost to upgrade (for eg. 5.x build 25 to 5.yz build 26)
whereas,
Major version changes for eg. 5.x to 6.x are not free to upgrade.
If this is in fact the case for bitsdujour purchase, I will purchase this software but I need you to clarify this first for me.
Thanks.
I can't speak for Acronis...
BUT I've purchased licenses for TI Home over a number of years (some of them even via BitsDuJour deals).
It's always been that updates are free. But you have to purchase an upgrade for a newer version.
In my Acronis account, it shows all the licenses I own, such as TI Home 2010, 2011, and 2012 and the Plus Pack for each of them separately -- since they have their own license keys -- and it always shows the latest update within each for immediate download.
Pavi Johnson @Roger, indeed I suppose all user reports are fickle, including those on Acronis Forums.
Whatever... I felt the need to inform BDJ users about widespread problems reported with this version. Feel free to redact or remove my comments as you see fit.
Acronis Inc. @ SoftCollector
here we offer to purchase consumer product Acronis True Image Home 2012 with Plus Pack. They are made to use at home and offer some simple solutions. Acronis Backup & Recovery is a corporate product, which is good for working with servers and operating the machine remotely, for solving complex problems.
SoftCollector Dear Roman,
Thank you for your kind reply.
Here are two more questions:
1. How was the free upgrade period of one month chosen? Is the next version coming soon (say in 45-60 days)? Please, confirm that updates will still be free for the current version.
2. On your site there is a product called Acronis® Backup & Recovery™ 11 Workstation, which is not unlike the one offered here (although, supposedly it is more advanced). From what I read there it is not a server or remote operation solution. How is it then better than the Home edition + the Pack (if anything is indeed more advanced)? I am asking this, because I would rather pay an extra back than "save" and then realize that an important function is missing from the discounted edition. What developers choose to call "home" and "pro" is often different from what customers actually need.
Kind Regards,
SC
1. Not all our customers aware that we launch new version of True Image at the end of August – beginning of September every yeah. So it may disappoint them if they buy the software in July and then find out that a new version has been launched the following month. That is why we give an opportunity to upgrade the current version to a new one during 1 month period without paying anything. And yes, all minor updates are for free. You have to pay only if you want to get another version of the software.
2. Here you can find a table with the parameters of these three products compared (there are versions of the previous year, but in this case it does not really matter - it will give you the overall information) http://kb.acronis.com/content/7540
Brent Smith @Roman: Why not offer a support plan to go along with these awesome purchases? As you've just noted, the next major release for True Image will be in August - well beyond the 1 month of "Free" upgrades provided in the current deal. If you do offer such a thing, is there a way to add it to the cart when we try to take advantage of this deal via the "Buy Now" link above?
NOTE: I do not intend the above to be construed as veiled criticism - it is wholly intended to be a constructive observation and possibly a suggestion for a support solution to be created. :)
Regardless of your reply, I do appreciate that you/Acronis are making great deals such as this one available to visitors of BitsDuJour! So thank you for that!
digitaltrix Although Acronis offers discounts through BDJ & other sites year-round the timing of this BDJ deal for Acronis would seem strategic, even if simplistically so.
The price of the current year version is dropped/discounted through various sites like BDJ before the new version release date, however the release is usually right outside of the 30 day window preventing any 'double dipping' for value on purchase.
Looking through the last comments of BDJ a similar sale took place for TI 2011 July 21st with a new version out August 23.
That to me personally would stink but other people may be happy purchasing the older version software for a guaranteed lower price.
As TI 2012 is not bad but far from the raved-about flagship of Acronis TI versions, I will wait for 2013 and hope to catch a good deal on eBay!
Yes I know eBay is not an authorized seller but I don't need support for 30 days of the product I intend to run for at least 365 days.
Btw, if anyone misses this deal and reads my comment search Newegg for Acronis TI 2012 'Academic'-$19.99 (free shipping) which is the same as standard 1-license TI 2012 afaik.
It IS without the Plus Pack but has no real academic requirements for purchase...go figure?!?
Sorry, apparently I wasn't straightforward. I'm not referring to the users on the Acronis forum, but rather BitsDuJour users. In other words, the members of OUR community.
While we don't always see eye-to-eye, I can personally vouch for many, many of the regulars on these boards. We are very lucky to have a community of diligent customers that take the time to carefully parse each of our deals before purchasing (or not purchasing). I don't think you can find more critical, insightful reviews on the internet.
Again, I'll take a positive review from an established Bitster any day over 100 negative Amazon reviews.
Simply put:
As #digitaltrix noted it is a strategic plan as we have to stimulate our sales the whole year. Plus it is a fair deal - you can wait and pay the full price for a new version or spend much less right here right now. It depends on what your priorities are.
Unfortunately, we do not have any offers with a support plan yet, though I agree that it is a good idea. Maybe in future we will try to put it into life.
1) Can rollback rx points be saved in the image backups created - so that when the backup is restored, the points work the same way ?
Or atleast anything good about letting rx points being saved anyway ?
2) Can try and decide feature - be used as - that suppose I try a risky software or browser session and want to restore to the previous safe state, with acronis tryndecide feature - then will the restore to safe state need a reboot ?
3) If I really want to use the try and decide feature only - then this feature can be made to use, SOMEHOW with 1 other imaging software installed as well (would that be compatible with any other ones - like terabyte / paragon / macrium). Again saying - really want to use the try n decide feature here.
Acronis Inc. Amit, here is the response for your questions:
1) Can rollback rx points be saved in the image backups created - so that when the backup is restored, the points work the same way ?
Or atleast anything good about letting rx points being saved anyway ?
No rollback points, but you can use incremental backups. Please check this article for additional information: http://kb.acronis.com/content/37576
2) Can try and decide feature - be used as - that suppose I try a risky software or browser session and want to restore to the previous safe state, with acronis tryndecide feature - then will the restore to safe state need a reboot ?
The reboot is optional, please take a look at this page for more information: http://www.acronis.com/su.../#299.html
3) If I really want to use the try and decide feature only - then this feature can be made to use, SOMEHOW with 1 other imaging software installed as well (would that be compatible with any other ones - like terabyte / paragon / macrium). Again saying - really want to use the try n decide feature here.
It is not recommended to install different backup software together because the programs use low-level drivers to access hard drives and there can be conflicts.
DrF @Amit,
Only the current snapshot will be retained by a True Image backup (see the FAQs or documentation on the Rollback Rx, MagiCure, or, probably Comodo TIme Machine websites).
Try and Decide is great conceptually (although maybe not necessary if you are using a snapshot program - they work much, much faster!!), but, when I tried to use it on a new HP laptop running Windows 7, 64-bit, the program said that Try and Decide did not work on Dynamic Disks. I'll admit to being disappointed, but MagiCure works great for me in that situation.
By the way, True Image and Rollback Rx/MagiCure work fine together. I've been using them for quite a while without issue. To their credit, True Image has never failed (although the backup and restore operations take a long, long time to complete!).
Hope that helps.
DroidLuvr I purchased 2012 when it was on BDJ the last time, and although I was a bit unhappy to find out that 2103 came out less than 90 days later and the upgrade was rather expensive, with no break because I hadn't had it less than 30 days... [I've seen others discussing this in the forums... but I'm placing it here because it directly pertains to my question.]
Bottom line: Although I have serial codes for 2012, I do not have it installed, and now I have the 2013 "upgrade" package from your website (for your offer of upgrading for the $19.99 price.)
Do I have to install 2012 with its codes and then 2013 for my 2013 upgrade key codes to work, or can I install 2013 directly??? [I have the Plus Pack codes for both as well...]
Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying out Acronis TI again :)
Terry Winslow A hint.. hover between the buy now button and the acronis website link.. it will show you a link to the purchase page on Acronis' website and add it to your cart... a pain, but it lets you get it. I'd post further how I got there or the link, but I'm not sure if it'd be allowed given the posting rules.
Jerry S Well, I am not a happy camper. 20 minutes left on the offer and the same problems persist. Right click on the Buy Now button and get redirected to http://www.bitsdujour.com...-plus-pack which is the same as nowhere. Click on the local link on that page and I am taken tote DeltaWalker page.
I hoe the BJD guys will make good on this. Time for me to get some sleep.
Ar Ache I have been trying to get this offer for 2 days but keep getting re-directed to other pages on bitsdujour such as delta walker.
I have gotten offers in the past with no problems. Please let me know how to get the offer. Thank you.
Lee Butler I have submitted a question to the BDJ team on the contact page about this. I haven't had a reply yet.
Terry Winslow Well I know the link I found using my hover over method still works, but you can't see it anymore on the pages. I'm fairly sure if I posted it, the link will be deleted and I'll be scolded for posting how to get a deal after it's done
Jerry S BDJ Folks:
In all the time, I've purchased stuff here, I've never seen you abandon folks when the order process didn't work right.
Please don't start doing it now. I (and others) were unable to get this deal because of a problem with YOUR system. Please make things right.
Thank you.
Jerry.
Lee Butler took an offer of an upgrade license over 2012 instead. Shame though, really wanted a full license.
Jerry S I am really disappointed in BDJ and Acronis. They didn't even acknowledge the ordering problem, much less resolve it.
Roger Thomasson @ Jerry
Sorry about that -- the technical problems affected all of our deals that day. We posted apologies on the other deals but mistakenly neglected to copy it here. Suffice it to say that we had quite a bit on our plate that day.
Jerry S Thanks, Roger, for the response. But what about those of us who wanted the deal but couldn't order it?
Shay Hardin I had the same problems when trying to order.
I wanted to update my older version of Acronis.
I hope someone will help those of us who tried to order but were not able to.
