mikeb b I haven't had the opportunity to try out TSW WebCoder yet, but looking at the website, I have a couple questions:

1) it's not clear to me if WebCoder is a superset of phpCoder. WebCoder is more expensive and it appears to have a bit more support for CSS and HTML, but phpCoder looks to have PHP Debugging and SFTP/FTPS which are not in WebCoder's feature list (it also appears that SiteSync does not support SFTP/FTPS yet).

Is this correct? Will WebCoder pick up the features in phpCoder, or are they always going to have distinct feature sets? In other words, do I need to decide which I want (or maybe I need both) or is there one that's planned to be a superset of the other?

2) the terms and conditions mention:

"A licensekey is personal and bound to a specific computer. You have the right to use your copy of WebCoder on 2 computers, e.g. a desktop and a laptop computer. If you need to use WebCoder on more than one computer, then please contact TSW to obtain a secondary licensekey."

Does this mean that the license is tied to a hardware signature - ie., if I upgrade hardware or buy a new machine do I need to 'reactivate' by contacting TSW?

Kasper Tanggaard Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for your comment. Here is my answer to your questions:

1. WebCoder is more of an all-round editor, while phpCoder has a very strong focus on editing PHP code. phpCoder does have some PHP features that are not currently in WebCoder, and might not be implemented either, like debugging, phpDoc support and an interface that evolves around PHP code. WebCoder still comes with a lot of PHP features though, and besides that, with the CSS tree, W3C validation, tag dialogs, QuickEdit and other more all-round features. I'm not going to tell you which of them you should use, because it really depends on what you expect from an editor, but I urge you to try them both out and then make a decision based on that :)

SFTP and FTPS support is planned for next version of WebCoder though, and has already been implemented in SiteSync 2.0, which is currently being beta tested. I wish to remind everyone that the upgrade from version 1 to version 2.0 of SiteSync is completely free, as described in an earlier blog post: http://www.tsware.net/blo...-sitesync/

2. Yes your key will be bound to your hardware signature, but it's a little less strict than other schemes, meaning that you can change certain components at least once, without the signature changing. If it does, you don't have to contact us - you can simply login to our serial key system, for which you will be given a login to upon purchasing, where you can generate a new key, obviously free of charge :)

If you have other questions, then please don't hesitate to ask!

mike b Thanks for the detailed explanation. I guess I have to do some actual evaluation work. My initial take on WebCoder is pretty positive.

This is probably not the right place to make a suggestion like this, but you may want to consider having a 'super-set' version of the editor that has all features (whether that's WebCoder or something else) or maybe consider some bundle of both editors. I think there are a fair number of potential customers who would like to have all those capabilities in a single license/purchase.

Kasper Tanggaard Hi Mike,

We might just do that at one point, but for now, if you wish to purchase both editors, just contact me through the website, and I'm sure that we can make a good deal for you :)
