Roger Simons Beware this is an old version - 2008 is now out.
I bought it a couple of months ago and got an email a couple of weeks later asking me to upgrade to 2008 for the same price I had paid for 2007. No reply to support request either. Enough said!

Tom Speziale I wasn't going to say anything but after reading Roger's comment I thought I'd add to it.

I've been using Tune Up Utilities since TU-2004. It comes with an "UpdateWizard" that is useless. You will go for the full year and the wizard informs you that no update is available and the next thing you know another annual "update" becomes available - for which you must pay. Typically, the upgrade adds little to the capabilities of the program (despite the company's hyperbole) and, in view of the slight improvements, the upgrade prices are rather steep.

I found this particularly annoying last year when I upgraded to TU 2006 - at the end of the year. Within a few weeks, TU-2007 became available and my UpdateWizard still did not recognize any new version being available.

While the product does have a lot going for it, be aware that annual changes are incremental and don't really qualify as "new versions." Only the name changes with a new year but you will pay a full version upgrade price.

I would otherwise recommend this program but I'll be looking for another tune up utility for myself!

Stephan Heerklotz For a TuneUp version like TuneUp Utilities 2007 are alle Updates for this software for free. Our costumers have the option to upgrade to the new software. This for a special upgrade price. One more information. Our TuneUp Utilities 2008 are not available at our website http://www.tune-up.com . This version will releases in the English language until late December this year.

Tom Speziale Stephan,

Do you mean that if I upgrade to 2007 then I will get free upgrades to 2008, 2009 usw.?

Stephan Heerklotz The upgrade price to the new version is approximately the half price of the full version. For exmaple: full version = 49.95 - the upgrade price will be 29.95 USD.
If you buy for example the version TuneUp Utilities 2007 you have all updates for this software for free - but if you want to upgrade to the new version TuneUp Utilities 2008 you get the special upgrade offer how described above.

Tom Speziale Thank you, Stephan.

It appears that your policy is unchanged.

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

Just some thoughts.

If their upgrade policy is a bit tuff, at least the earlier version can continue to be used and is a good product.

Most everybody seems to like the software, it is as advertised (checking snapfiles, fileforum, donationcoder, cnet).

Most of the individual features (temp file removal, defrag, startup, registry etc) can probably be handled by various freeware; however many would prefer a nice utility suite to start rather than finding and developing their personal . At $20 you don't have a big investment and you do get value.

No support or discussion forum with customer q&a on their website that I could see. I realize that is time, effort, vulnerability for a small company, however to me it is a primary feature.

And It is true that the normal software model (that doesn't give the company much recurring income) is hard to sustain development.

Thus this upgrade to a new version each year is similar to companies that charge a yearly "maintenance" - except that you can just live with the older version which is still supported. So those who aren't settled with other products can probably use this discount to start up with the company.

Just be aware that if you end up wanting the current version (2008, out momentarily) there is no money savings in the discount above, it is a wash.

Shalom,
Steven

Roger Simons In reply to Olivier two weeks or so after buying 2007 I was notified by email I could upgrade to 2008 for $39.99 (not $29.99 as claimed by Stephan).
Their website did have 2008 version in place of 2007 on it - they seem to have rolled it back, persumably because of the Bits du Jour offer.
For the record, yes it is good software. they just need to treat their customers better (including replying to support email requests).

Jason Tibbey Buyer beware (at any price)!

I have found this company to NOT be at all reputable. I've had experiences with them in that past that are much worse than what's being described here today (I don't have time to go into detail).

Steven Avery Hi Folks

Well I decided not to do the download. We simply have too many alternatives. (eg. Glary, CCleaner, WinPatrol, Auslogic, Ace etc) some free, some small expense one-time, not yearly.

If it turned out to be an average of another $10 each year then it might make sense, but they have it set up 2 or 3 times that .. who wants to use a software without the latest version, so you would feel pressured every year to put out $25-30 for a few utilities.

As for Jason, I understand he might have some legit gripes (none of us are too happy with their $ structure, also I noted the lack of a support forum) but it isn't really fair to Tune-up to say "you did bad stuff -- but no time to say what".

They do generally get high marks for the software, which isn't always the case. However this is not really a discount, and I suggest Bits watch out more carefully for software companies whose "discount" is a just-about-to-be-replaced so-we will-dump version with a high upgrade fee.

Caveat emptor, as Jason says. If they are not willing to put 2008 up at about 50% they really should not be on Bits, imho.

Shalom,
Steven Avery
