What are people saying about Typing Buddy

Robert Bull Is there a portable version of Typing Buddy, please?
Sep 20 2018 at 11:40am Copy Link
Alexander User Once you install the application there is no reason why you couldn't just copy installation folder to whatever else place on your computer (or usb stick). It will work from there. So answer is there isn't separate portable version for download but it is basically portable after installation.

Seems like a very nice piece of software for $10.

Alexander User There are a couple of minor discrepancies between help file and actual download because I update software more often than the help file and today I wanted to fix help button as soon as possible so I didn't go trough help file to update it too, I 'll do it by the day of promotion Sunday 23rd

Amit Please answer all the queries -

1. Does it have the option of expanding to different long texts in different applications by same trigger ? for example typing trigger - sed, sends longtext1 in 1st application and sends longtext2 in 2nd application.

2. Does it have the feature of giving multi-options of long texts shown to be selected from, with same trigger ? like for example, trigger s3d shows 4 options of text to type -

3. And if these above features are not currently in the software, can they be implemented in it soon, and when ?

4. How often is the software updated ? And wheres the link to the page showing history of previous updates on the website ?
Sep 21 2018 at 11:47am Copy Link
Alexander User 2. Yes it can show multi options for one trigger, (you can set trigger for a whole group and it will show all available entries in a popup menu)
1. Not in a way you described but using method from point 1 It is simple to choose appropriate action. Unless you want to send to two applications at the same time which can't be done (because it sends to active app and only one can be active at any time)
4. I add features and fix bugs very often, sometimes on daily basis sometimes it takes a month but it is active project. There is no log of updates on the site

Robert Bull Aleksandar, thanks for confirmation that Typing Buddy can be used as if it were portable. But where does it store its data? Windows tries to force users to put data in particular folders. I'm hoping for a program that doesn't leave data behind, or need higher privileges than the current user account has, so I can e.g. use it from a USB stick on computers in the public library.

Also, do you have plans for text *completion* as well as text expansion, and/or text correction?

Sep 22 2018 at 1:46pm Copy Link
Alexander User It stores its data in the same folder where exe file is. I can't guarantee though that it will work in public library or any particular Windows installation, you know
,because there is so many ways for administrators to configure Windows and limit alll kinds of things. It should work though in most cases.
I thought and still am of 'completion'. Correction thing I'm not sure. Somehow I like better to do spell check when I am finished writing than being constantly distracted as I type.

Alexander User Chris, first please change that angry avatar it makes me fear you and I can't think properly:-)
Him,maybe malware does something to it? Try turning off your AV to try.
Try this-right click folder where exe file is and choose 'take ownership' or something like that. It may be something to do with folder/file permissions.
Also you can take whole folder and move it directly on root c:/ see if it works from there.

I think that's all I can suggest without being at your computer, and not having this issue before.

You can try a little more if you have will and patience. When
/if you give up you can contact BDJ guys for a refund
desktopmetronome - Sep 23 2018 at 11:15am Copy Link
Chris I used my InnoExtractor first and extracted the program and tried running it. It gave the error. I installed it to D and it had the error. I installed it to default location and error.
I even turned off Malwarebytes to instal and run it and same error.

(I used this image because BDJ had blocked my posts for mod review in the past, but I changed my ways so they unblocked me.)

I guess I will get a refund.

Thanks for trying.

Michael R. This offer looks like quiet promising, especially in the fine-print conditions (all computers, lifetime upgrades)!

In a (much more expansive) competitional product, there is a feature, I like very much: If the user types in the first (e.g. 3) characters of an abbreviation, a little window pops up, showing all the abbreviations that start with the entered characters and the user can quickly choose the desired one (or of course continue typing). Is there such a feature in TB?
Dec 17 2018 at 5:36pm Copy Link
Alexander User Not exactly the same, but you can have more than one item with same abbrevation,or you can asign abbrevation to a set of items, than you will have a popup menu to choose from.
desktopmetronome - Dec 17 2018 at 10:30pm Copy Link
Michael R. @Aleksandar: I just tried: If I get it right I have to enter the exact abbreviation (with either nothing or a space before it), than I have to press the Action Key and than the replacement takes place (or if a abbreviation is used twice the popup-menu opens).

It would be great, if the feature, I described above, would be available in a next version!
Would you consider implementeing it?
It's quiet handy: it's an abbreviation of the abbreviation and the user does not know exactly the abbreviation('s end), he can see his fitting abbreviations in the popup-window.
And I suppose the main programming-effort (creating a popup-window and let user select or continue to write) is already done...

Thanks a lot
Dec 18 2018 at 12:07am Copy Link

Bradley MacDonald Question - if you assign a text abbreviation - such as THX for "Thank you" - it is triggered automatically every thing you type THX? Or do you have to type THX and hit a key combination like CTRL-D (or something like that)??
There are many times this would be useful - but I wonder if at times it might be bothersome - and thus controlling it (turning it off/on?) easily might be a solution to that??
Mar 29 2019 at 7:49am Copy Link
Alexander User The other scenario you described is how it works.
I found that first one leads to many anoying things so i went with othert option.
Once you get used to it it realy feels natural and right.
desktopmetronome - Mar 29 2019 at 8:19am Copy Link
David User I installed the demo version on my Windows 10 laptop today and it installed and ran OK. Norton Security checked it prior to installation and said it was "safe."

I purchased the license. When I tried installing it, Norton refused and automatically deleted the setup file. It reported a virus: Trojan.Gen.2. "This file risk is high." Norton also stated that this version was released 6 months ago and that less than 100 Norton community users had used this file.

I realize that with some apps it is necessary to turn off anti-virus software to enable installation but based on the difference between the demo and licensed versions, I believe there IS a problem with the licensed version and dare not risk installing it as it is.

Mar 29 2019 at 4:20pm Copy Link
Alexander User Hi,
because typing buddy by its nature listens to the keyboard input in
background some Anti Virus programs detect that and consider it to be
some spy
To install it again I guess you must somehow whitelist it in your anti
virus application.

These "false positive" detections make more harm to me than I can tell
you, every now and then I get angry
emails from customers accusing me for virus/trojans,when in reality anti
virus companies are just too rude to do something about their 'false
positive' thing. Every software vendor will tell you this.
It is just too easy for Anti Virus software to mark something as a
threat if they are not sure than to refine their detection algorithm.

Hope this helps ,

desktopmetronome - Mar 29 2019 at 5:10pm Copy Link
David User Alexander,
I do understand about false positives from antivirus programs. The challenge is trying to determine if it is a false positive or a real bit of malware. I do note that I haven't heard others raise this issue.

Thanks for your link to the Norton site. That issue (Trojan.Gen.NPE.2) was for a variant and was raised last August. It was closed for comments shortly thereafter.

Historically, Norton seems to been more sensitive than other anti-virus programs. Having previously been a victim of identity theft, I am more paranoid than most people and therefore lean toward a very conservative AV programs.

I will continue to check with both Norton and other sources to see if I can get comfortable with your app. I would like to see you succeed!

One thing that can help you decide is to look at my track record here on bitsdujour (5 years and 10+ products, and hundreds of customers), and 10+ years of presence on the internet.
I realy have no business spreading trojans to peroples computers.

Sep 2 2020 at 12:06am Copy Link
Alexander User thanks, I will have to contact them and as for explanation. They are very rude and without any thinking just mark normal sites as dangerous. It happens with so many sites that it should be stopped somehow ,but those Anti-Virus companies just don't care if they are ruining someomone's reputiation or not even if it is obvious that it is their fault
desktopmetronome - Sep 2 2020 at 6:12am Copy Link
Mike B Also people should keep in mind that software that hooks into and/or simulates keyboard activity is often considered suspect by antivirus.

And Alexander is right that antivirus companies don't really care that their software flags false positives.

HeuF I hope so because I want to have the program. Unfortunately, you cannot be too careful. How is it possible that the website indicates that it is not safe?

bvssunnydale Hi, just wondering if TB can enter anything besides pure text, like dates, hard returns, arrow right, arrow left, delete, etc (I'm comparing it to the current abbreviation expander I'm using, Shortkeys). Thanks very much

Staggsy Really Pleased with this software and fast response from the vendor. For people asking if it can be run portable although it may not be officially supported it seems to run fine from a usb stick and seems a handy tool for boilerplate duties on windows

Paul User Purchased it and IT WILL NOT DOWNLOAD.

Tried several times and even on different browsers.
Now I'm locked out and it is telling me to download it again.

Very, very disappointing that I can't even download
a product I purchased.

Please fix this problem or issue me a refund!

Paul User I have received nothing in my email regarding a new link!!!

If you're going to reply, then maybe tell me who the email will be from.

This really is the most basic customer service.

Who will email be from? What is the email address or at least their
email extension?

I've gone through my Gmail and cannot see anything other than the original purchase.

Why does it have to be so hard?

Adrian Williams I tried the trial version downloaded from the website and it worked well. I installed the demo on my windows 11 asus laptop without any issues. After a short trial I purchased the software. I unistalled the demo and tried running the installation program downloaded from the BDJ reciept email but I got 'This app can't run on your PC'.

Any suggestions??

Robert Crombie I have two computers. Can I dictate where the database is stored ?
I have a USB stick in my router, which both PCs can 'see'
If I can locate the Data Base in the thumb drive, then I do not have to 'housekeep'
to have same data available in both PCs.
EG I have RightNote program which is invaluable for an 80 year old with no memory.
I have done the above with their Data Base, and it works fine.
