Darryl L It is still responding with the full price - not only that it is listing over $150 in Canadian dollars - which is a bit rich given that the exchange rate is 1:1 (par). I'll check again in the morning, but I hope they are offering a better exchange rate as well as the discount....

Steven Littiebrant Nearly all professional fractal artists I've run across use Ultra Fractal almost exclusively (usually mixing layers in Photoshop). This is an absolutely amazing program, and loads of fun to even just fiddle with (though there are simpler, free applications that are similar). I've yet to see anything even come close to what this application has to offer, and $40 is absolutely DIRT cheap for an app of this quality.
Dec 3 2007 at 7:40am Copy Link

Panny Brawley Ultra Fractal is the "Photoshop" of fractal generators. With layering capability, masking, "filters", and infinite scaling this is a "must have" program for any serious fractal artist.

S B I have been watching this app for years and intend to get it.

You can see wonderous Ultrafractal-generated art in many galleries for computer artists.

This is professional art program with Photoshop-like layers, masks, color gradient controls, etc., and even animation, as well as modern, powerful fratal systems.

This is really a bargain.

fran harter Hi,

Subject: Licensing questions

I visited your website to find out about licensing.
I am sure I am just missing it, but what is the licensing on this product?

Is it "per pc" [one copy for every pc in your house] ?

Or

"Per user" [example: could I use it on my home desktop PC and my laptop]?

Thanks in advance for your time.
Nov 16 2009 at 12:55am Copy Link

Frederik Slijkerman Hi Fran,

The licensing is per user, so you can install it on multiple computers as long as you're the only person using those copies.

Ultra Fractal will take advantage of multicore and multiprocessor systems where possible. You can also run Ultra Fractal on a Mac with VMware Fusion, Parallels, Boot Camp or Virtual PC (PowerPC only), or on Linux with WMware or WINE."

Louis H Wow! I have not played around with this program since the entry level version was offered a while back. I knew it had depth to it, but I did not begin to understand just how deep this rabbit hole goes!

There are a LOT of resources out there for those of us who need or desire help in becoming better adept in using this program. Frederik has some great resources at the Ultra Fractal site, and there are a lot of other folks offering everything from basic to advanced level tutorials, as well as additional formulas to add to the community pack found at the Ultra Fractal website.

Thank you again to Frederik and to BDJ for making this one available.

Preston Mitchell Seems like a really cool software...but what would most people do with it? Sure, it would great fun to create exotic fractual artwork...but for what purpose? Art simply for art's sake? Or can the fractual artwork be used for something practical? If so, what? Maybe an unique background for a web site or something?

Can anybody offer ideas as to what fractual artwork can be used for beyond piquing one's own vanity?

My lack of imagination suggests that Ultra Fractal is merely an expensive toy (especially at the full list price). But I would gladly buy Ultra Fractal at the discount price IF I could have fun creating fractual artwork that becomes useful content of some sort.

Preston Mitchell Frederik: Thank You for reply BUT....

Ultra Fractal amounts to what I already thought: Art for the Sake of Art and Fun! Plus, it offers some limited practical applications such as unique backgrounds for web sites and such. All that is wonderful great EXCEPT Ultra Fractal seems to have a steep learning curve.

Your web site offers a beginner's learning course for more than the discount cost of the software! I wish life afforded me enough free time to learn a complex software for fun. I spend enough time learning the new advanced features of my annually updated 'work' software.

Tore Hoyem The images by Etienne Saint-Amant are so good.

Now what I'm wondering is if images like this require a real artist, or if Ultra Fractal can help someone who knows vector and raster manipulation programs, but has little artistic ability, achieve something similar?

From tutorials I've watched today I have some idea on how to create nice, colorful images based on formulas, but Etienne's images are something else, entirely.

I think I know the answer, but it's worth asking :-)

Edit:
Let me try to explain what I mean.
Etienne seems to have used fractal elements, e.g. the flower like things in image 2, and composed the image based on these.
In image 3 we see all these lines with different properties.

What I'm asking is whether images like these can be made using only UF, or does one generate elements in UF and blend them into a final image in Photoshop?
Jul 7 2012 at 4:40am Copy Link
0
Roberto you can get some extra info about this creative artist:

he says there are many layers to get each final image.

a really impressive work.
Jul 7 2012 at 6:02am Copy Link
0
Tore Hoyem Thanks, Roberto.

I take his comments to mean that he created everything in UF.
I'm not sure how it interpret this statement, though: "Some of the layers are mapped on a 3D plane to give a sense of depth."

Can someone who is familiar with the program shed further light on the subject?
Jul 7 2012 at 6:31am Copy Link
0
Frederik Slijkerman This works via a transformation on the Mapping tab in Ultra Fractal: it lets you transform the fractal in various ways, e.g. to map it onto a 3D plane. Try the 3D Mapping transformation in the Standard.uxf file to see how this works.

Tore Hoyem Hi Frederik.
I only stated dabbling with fractals 2 days ago, so my understanding is very limited.

I have experimented with UF and several of the free alternatives, but most people seem to stand by UF as the way to go.
However, I'm not that interested in exploring the standard, Julia-type(?), fractals right now.

I can create rather nice looking Flame fractals in, say, ChaosPro by now, but I have a hard time doing the same in UF.
I did read the bit about using the Flame Coloring Algorithm to achieve this, however when I do, changing the fractal formula type no longer seems to affect the results. I.e. I get the exact same image, no matter what I do.

Obviously this is my fault, but so far I haven't found any tutorials on this subject (flame fractals). Can you point us to a few before the BDJ offer expires, please?

Louis Gedo Hi, the BitsDuJour email ad for this product is misleading. It states: "Ultra Fractal 5 Extended Edition helps you quickly and easily learn how to create your own gorgeous, complex fractals. Add layers, use masks, and even create ANIMATIONS" The Ultra Fractals website states only with the Extended edition can animations be created.

Either Ultra Fractals fed the wrong, misleading info to Bits DuJour or Bits DuJour has it wrong.

Either way, I am asking right now that Ultra Fractals today put the Extended edition of their product on sale for 58% off as well since some or many of us were led to believe that this product can create animations.

Thank you in advance.

Louis H The last Windows version was released back in August 11, 2010. The last Mac version was released August 14, 2013. I see, on the vendor's FB page, where version 6 is being worked on, with a tentative release sometime in 2015.

Question to the vendor...

Are you still on track for 2015? Any chance of hearing what you are working on for V6?

It's a wonderful program and I recommend folks give it a trial run and if interested, this is a very nice, and rare chance, to pick it up with a discount.

Jul 31 2014 at 3:02am Copy Link

Mark Johnson The examples in the showcase gallery are mind-blowing. Those are some talented people with in-depth knowledge of this extremely powerful software.

I do have a recommendation about the gallery...

When you go to the showcase either from a link on your website or one of the links above, it takes you to the sub-gallery for a specific 'featured' artist.
It is very easy for the visitor to think that is all the examples there are in the gallery. When the gallery first opens, the eyes naturally drift to the beautiful images. The tendency is to then follow the images from top to bottom, and by the time the visitors get to the bottom image it is very likely they will not realize that there is a link at the top of the page to see images by more artists.

Here are two ways to present the images that might work better for making a visitor realize all that's there:

1 - Instead of defaulting to 'Featured Artist', default to 'All Artists', and in the listing of artists show who is the featured artist, and perhaps give the featured artist top billing in the listing of thumbnails.

or

2 - Combine the views for 'Featured Artist' and 'All Artists' into a single page with two sections. The view could default to the top section having the 'Featured Artist' thumbnails, but below the info and images for the single artist is another section for 'Other artists', where you show the teaser thumbnails for each of the other artists. The beauty of doing it this way is it works the same no matter which artist the visitor is viewing (artist at top, listing of artists at bottom).

I personally think #2 would work best. Since the thumbnails for 'All artists' would load when you first went into the gallery, there is no added wait time for the visitor when going to the page for an individual artist.

Anyway, great product. I hope you don't take offense at the recommendations above; I just think the way the visitor's eye is drawn when visiting the gallery a slightly different presentation would work better.

Stephen Brown Been after getting this for quite some time. A friend allowed me to use an earlier version three or four years ago (he said he bought it on a whim, but never used it), but I never felt right about using it at the time. I'd have purchased a copy back then because I thought it was a fabulous program, but having been made unemployable several years ago due to an idiot driver who broke my back and left me with head injuries I've never been able to justify spending the full price on it.

Now I can own a registered copy. Purchased it forthwith, :) Looking forwards to playing around with it.

Louis H I forgot how much I really enjoy working with this program.

@ Frederik Slijkerman...

Is the Complete Online Formula database up to date? (I have the Extended Version and never got around to installing it on my current system. Registration went fine without a hitch.)

I downloaded the file but some files are showing a date from 2008.

Do I need to download the monthly and weekly files as well? Or from what date do I need to download the most current individual files as noted in the "Recent changes" section?

Thanks!

MojoMan Hi Frederik... I was not looking for a different edition. I just bought UE Express Edition in February and wondered if there is a break in the upgrade price to this edition. Thanks.

ForumGuru I purchased this yesterday and the key I was sent will not work. I sent an email to support last night and I am waiting for a reply with a good key or a fix to my issue. I hope the author and/or the author's staff get this working for me soon.

Constantin Florea @ForumGuru, I've just sent an email to the vendor regarding the issue you mention. This promotion is running with Cleverbridge as the e-Commerce which means only the vendor can send you the correct registration key.

Constantin Florea @ForumGuru, I am sorry for the delay. Unfortunately all we (BitsDuJour) can do is to contact the vendor. I just did this again by email and I also sent them a Facebook message. I will keep a close eye on this until the vendor responds.

ForumGuru @Constantin

Apparently support from the developer is a bit lacking for this old program. I still have not heard a thing from him... Not a happy camper at this point.

Louis H @ForumGuru...

Did your key look like something like this

-- COPY LICENSE KEY FROM HERE --
Product: Name of Product;
Licensee: "your name";
series of numbers and letters for three lines
xxxxxxxx777777xxxxxxx777777xxxxxxx77777
xxxxx77777777xxxxxxx77777777xxxxx7777xx
-- COPY UNTIL HERE --

(I have, of course altered what ws there in my license)

I copied and pasted from the P in "Product" to the last number/letter in line three. (From my original receipt from 2011) and it worked. You may not be like me, but the first time I tried it, back in 2011, I somehow had added an extra space.

You may have already tried everything, but I thought it would be worth a shot, seeing as how the vendor is not responding.

Frederik Slijkerman Louis, the formula database is always up to date. You can either update from within the program, or manually download formulas here:
http://formulas.ultrafractal.com/

Just use the "Full" option. The other options are provided for when you download formulas every week, or every month, to reduce the download time.

Best regards,
Frederik Slijkerman

ForumGuru All is good now and it was my mistake...

I have made hundreds of software installs and I guess my brain was overlooking the fact that we needed to enter the product and licensee information as well. It's the first time I have seen that, and even though I looked at the email several times, for some reason I was just entering the key string.

My bad! Thanks Louis and Frederik!

Sorry for any trouble and the extra posts and I am a happy camper now.

Cheers to all.

Stephen Brown HI, I purchased Ultra Fractal v5.04 some months ago (unused to have v4 from some years ago, then decided to buy the new version as I loved the earlier version. Can you tell me what the difference is between my edition and the creative edition, or are they the same. If not, how much would it cost me to upgrade to the creative edition?

Thank you

Regards

Stephen Brown

Frederik Slijkerman Hi Stephen,

It's the same program as the one you purchased, so no need to purchase again!

carl thorpe Just a heads up that this software has not been updated in quite some time.

The Windows version was last updated in 2010, and the Mac version was last updated in 2014.

peter anon Maybe it hasn't been updated in a while, but the demo is still working fine on windows 10 64 bit.

What I don't understand though is why all my demo attempts look like a zoomed in fractal and nothing like the textures, feathers and line architecture of the examples - LOL

Are these LAYERED fractals? or what trick am I missing here ?
(I am loading in the other starting points, but yet to find anything more textural)

Frederik Slijkerman The Windows version hasn't been updated in a while because I needed to finish the Mac version, and as noted above it still works well on all recent Windows versions (otherwise I would of course have released an update). Since 2014 I've been hard at work on a new combined Windows+Mac release which should be ready late this year or early 2017. This BDJ sale will give you a full v5 license key for the Creative Edition which will also let you benefit from reduced upgrade pricing once version 6 is out.

Frederik Slijkerman Regarding the textures of the examples: these were created by experienced fractal artist. With time and dedication, you too can produce fractals like this. I recommend starting with Janet Parke's tutorials:

peter anon OH I was about to buy it, but see I really need the EXTENDED edition to get the animation.

What can be done here?

Will the extended version have a deal on it in the future?
