Despite your best efforts to come up with a unique password for your login - one with letters, numbers, symbols, and a gazillion characters in length, it's still just a single point of entry between a would-be intruder and your sensitive data. If someone can crack your password, every piece of data that you hold near and dear is up for grabs.

Universal Shield is the perfect solution for making your data secure. By letting you protect your files, folders, and drives, Universal Shield provides an invaluable layer of added protection for your data! You can have Universal Shield trigger automatically on boot, or after a specified period of idle time.

Imagine having the ability to hide individual files, file types, folders, and drives from all other users, including those with administrator privileges! You can even use Universal Shield to encrypt those files, folders, and drives with a password, or limit the Read/Write/Visible/Delete permissions of other users, which is helpful when you want others to view files without giving them the ability to delete them.

Universal Shield also protects your personal settings from being modified, so your My Documents folder and Internet Favorites are kept safe from harm, and your desktop icons stay where you put them.

What about programs that need access to your protected files, folders, and drives? Universal Shield lets you specify trusted applications that can override the protection!

Mark Stephens Within one year after the purchase you get all upgrades to the product free of any charges. If your one year of free upgrades has already expired, you can purchase the updated version at a discount.

Of course, you don't have to upgrade if you don't want to: you may continue using the version that you have purchased for as long as you like, if it works for you well enough, without paying any additional fees.

Mike G Can Universal Shield hide individual files as well as folders? Can a file or folder be hidden for other users, but visible to my account without being password protected?

Mark Stephens Yes, Universal Shield can hide individual files. Universal Shield has the Trusted Users feature. Trusted Users are domain users that are trusted and allowed to access hidden files.

Harald Vogel I'm very interested in your product. So far I used software to make a big encrypted container file but because of a crash this file got corrupted and I lost all my data in it. How do you make sure that my data is still accessible even if there is a problem with Universal Shield or the protected folder. Do you also work with encrypting the file / folder or do you protect the folders with other methods. Also will the protection still be on even Unviversal shield will be closed or uninstalled or will the folder / files only be protected if Universal shield is running.

Thank you for your answers.

Mike G Nice tool; well designed. This will be very useful for anyone who shares a computer or simply has folders/files that are "eyes-only". Right away I was able to resolve one of my long-standing pet peeves--temporary files that are visible in folders (including the desktop) when using applications such as Word. With Universal Shield Custom Access setting and wild card, these temp files are now invisible without hindering functionality.

There is one small quirk: When I toggle protection off using hot key, a document named "~$*.docx" appears on my desktop whether I have a Word document open or not. Actually I NEVER want to toggle visibility back on for these temp files, but there doesn't seem to be any way to make individual objects "immune" to hot key actions.

This functionality is either not currently possible or I just haven't found it: I'd like to see a flag to set protected objects as included or excluded from the toggle protection hot key. For example, If I frequently toggle protection off for a "bank accounts" folder, I don't want the hot key to also toggle visibility on temporary files on my desktop. In fact, a per-object inclusion/exclusion flag would be useful for other options too, such as idle time protection.

Mark Stephens Hi Harald,

Thank you for your interest in our product. Universal Shield can't corrupt your files. There is no danger of losing your documents. All protected files can be retrieved but you should remember your password.

You can protect files with or without encryption. All files will be protected even Universal Shield will be closed. Uninstall Universal Shield is protected with a password. It better protects Universal Shield from other users.

Thanks.

Mark Stephens Mike,

Thank you for your message.

With the current version of Universal Shield you can't separately unprotect files. All files from the list will be unprotected with the Unlock command.

Your comments are helpful and we'll examine each one of them closely to see how we can implement them.

Thanks.

Harald Vogel Hello Mark,

thank you for your answer. I'm sure that your product can't corrupt my files but what will happen when a protected / hidden file / folder gets changed or corrupted from any source outside. In my case with the corrupted container it was a combination of a crash with blue screen while a defragmentation was running. All my non protected files were okay but the container file wouldn't accept my passwort or a backup key file anymore.

Another interesting question came up when I was researching for protect / hide folders software: What will happen if I try to rename or even delete a folder when there are passwort protected or hidden files or (sub)folders in the path?

And finally: Will Universal shield work systemwide and with other file managers than explorer. Most of the time I use Total Commander or Directory Opus so will this work?

Thanks again for answering me and making a great product!

Mike G It's currently after 1 AM EST on 29 August 09, but Universal Shield is not showing the "Buy Now" button ob Bits du Jour. The product page says "Sorry, you've missed this deal..." . The other two products on sale today appear correct, so only the Universal Shield page is having a problem.

Chrille Andersson Is it possible to make the program to NOT appear in the Most frequently used programs-list, without setting it in Stealth-mode?

Mark Stephens Harald,

Other programs can't get access to protected folders and corrupt files. Universal Shield bans protected folders deletion/renaming.

Yes, Universal Shield works systemwide with all programs.

Thanks.

Mark Stephens Chrille,

No, only Stealth Mode allows you to hide the program from other people.

Thanks.
