Phil Tobin The staggering multiplicity of video formats means there's no such thing as simply dropping "your video" into editing software and off you go.

For example: Sony and Panasonic cameras, whether dedicated video cams or not, shoot in AVCHD (or, in some cases of Panasonic's products) MP4. Or Apple Quicktime. AVCHD footage emerges as Matroska MKV files which need converting for editing needs. Aside from all that, there are .mov and .wmv files and .avi and MPEG (this last in mpeg2, the format required to pop a video on a USB stick and play it back through a TV.) At a guess, I'd reckon there are now around 50 movie file formats in circulation, some mere variations on a theme, others as radically different from each other as chalk and cheese -- it's no wonder, so many who're new to this end up getting so confused when they thought a video file was simply a, uh, video file.

It really would be helpful if the developer of VideoFlick could say just what video formats this program can handle / edit -- at least one commercial program of which I'm aware can't cope with MP4 at all. . . Thanks!

That is a big NO NO!

Occasionally a program that had been offered in a promotional giveaway was later offered here on BitsDuJour. The giveaway offer usually has the requirement of "You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards." Sometimes that giveaway promotion install stipulation was not edited out when offered here on BitsDuJour. Each time that has happened, there has been a big backlash from potential customers.

When purchasing a license for the software, customers want to be able to re-install if and when needed, and without having to jump through hoops dealing with the developer (often these add extra delays, which could be detrimental to some customers). Imagine a hospital that depends on a software program but the hard drive dies; the IT depart is summoned for a high priority replacement and reinstall of backed up software, but then face the crisis that the software refuses to work because the license is rejected due to a different hardware fingerprint. How will the hospital director feel about having to wait a couple of days to get the license reset?

The majority of software developers already know this and so they allow the customer to deactivate and re-activate as needed. Those same companies are doing just fine. All companies should adopt the same sensible policy.

If the program has a lifetime license but when the program needs to be installed onto a new hard drive or computer but requires the developer's involvement, things can be far worse for the customer. Developers do not state their company's ability to stay in business. Also, they do not state their age, health, and what year the "Death Clock" is expecting them to die in. Therefore, before the user intended to use the lifetime licensed software for many more years, but the company is closed, the customers are left in limbo with no means of continuing to use the software. Whose lifetime? It should be the customer, not the developer.

Software license purchases should be a good experience for both parties, and the seller-customer relationship remains comfortable for both. The only way to do that is to ensure software licenses are offered at a fair price and fair licensing of usage. Then when new features are added to the software, a fair upgrade price should be offered to honor those previous customers. A happy customer is more likely to pay for an upgrade.
