What are people saying about WordWeb Pro Bundle

Peter User Hello Bits du Jouers:

Just to be clear: is this offer for the complete WordWeb Pro 5 bundle?

By the way, this is a very neat program!

Peter

Antony Lewis No, it is the main WordWeb Pro program and the additional English word list set - but no language or geographical word lists .

S B I have been using (and upgrading) the commerical Word Web Pro for several years. It's an indespensible, always at-the-ready dictionary, speller, and thesaurus. It's definitions and word lists are authoritative, though of moderate length. Occasionally, when I want to squeeze out the last bit of meaning/connotation I'll use an on-line lookup.

WordWeb Pro is much handier and much, much more advanced then MS Word's facilities, though it is every bit as fast and convenient. Word's thesaurus just too limited.

When you have found a word, it offers direct synonyms, a list of things it might be a type of, examples/types of the word, and similar words. With on click it will instantly limit definitions and corresponding lists to adjectives, nouns, verbs, or adverbs.

It has phrases, too.

It handles wild-card searches, web searches, anagrams, etc., etc.

Years ago I thought I needed installation support: it was quick and sincere.

For me, as I've said, it's indespensible.

David User Please clear this up for me. The price on their site is also $29. Is that what I would be getting or am I getting something more. Where did you come up with the $58 retail?

Antony Lewis WordWeb suports American, British and other varieties of English, but on the website in a few places things are in British English because I'm British... (license as a noun is American English).

Peter pereh I have read the old comments, still I am unsure: according to your website, the progam is $19, the additional word lists is $29. So that would be a normal price of $48. In the offer here it is $58. Did I miss something?

K H And I am still confused about the differences between WordWeb Pro and the WordWeb Pro Bundle. Would you clarify?

Antony Lewis The offer was corrected today with the latest pricing. The deal is for the WordWeb Pro Bundle (normal price $59), which includes the program and all optional additional word lists (e.g. so you can do pattern-matching searches to find words in any of the word lists, including, for example, Wikipedia head words).

K H I love WordWeb. I've used the free version for years - and years. I tell everyone about it. I open it each and every morning and run it all day.

I'm having a little trouble trying to decide whether to purchase the Pro version or the Pro Bundle that is being offered here. When I click on the Download - Try Before You Buy - I am taken to Download.com and WordWeb 5.52, the Free version of the program, which I already have. So there isn't really a way to try out either the Pro version or the Pro Bundle before purchasing. Is that correct?

That being the case, I must ask another idiotic question. The way I understand it, the screenshots (on Bits du Jour's site) are of WordWebPro but none of them (the screenshots) are related to the additional word lists that come with the bundle. Is that correct? Or is there a site where I can learn more about the list sets? "WordWeb supports word finding with any of the following lists" what does that mean? Doesn't WordWeb Pro (minus the bundle) do pattern-matching searches? Sorry to be so dense, but I don't really understand what they are and I have somehow not been able to find any description of them, other than what I quoted above, either here or on your own website. That's why I was trying to download the program to try it.

Thank you for your patience.

S B I've long been a very happy user of WordWeb Pro. (and for years before there was a Pro).

It's always handy, authoritative, and I like its thesaurus that extends its good list of a word's synonyms with additional lists: "Types" and "Types of", and I think even a "Parts".

I occasionally have fun with its anagrams, trying to discover interesting variations.

The dictionary/thesaurus is especially handy with its hot key so I can check spelling and look for a definition & synonyms (and further references) in virtually any application.

I also like the Pro version's extended lists of words and phrases, etc. It's these more unusual items that are important to have integrated and really distinguish this application.

Many thanks to the developers!

Antony Lewis The lists are all just lists of words, for finding words. For example you can search for words in French containing using the pattern

*tete*

to find "casse-tête", etc. There are no translations or definitions.

Mary Wilson Although I have used this program and it is a descent program, I would hesitate in purchasing from this company due to past billing problems. The last time I used my credit card with them, they double bill me a year apart for the same program. Had to go to the Visa company to get the incorrect billing off my as this company refused to answer my e-mails even with all the documentation I sent them.

Michael Mortimer Thanks Mary for the heads up on the billing issues. I have had that happen to me. It's horrible when a company won't address e-mails. Make the sale, then they abandon us.

I was about to buy this, but will pass based on your comment.

Lots of problems with Bits lately. Last night I purchased the Wondershare Flash program. Or so I thought. After not getting a confirmation e-mail on my purchase I went back and looked at my card. Charge had not gone through. The receipt page said if I don't get a confirmation e-mail to repurchase or contact the purchase processor.

But when I contacted the company I get a dead link. And I can't repurchase because it was a Bits deal, that has expired.

Lots of people complained last night about being unable to purchase the Wondershare program. I stood up for the company since no one from anywhere talked to people who posted complaints about not being able to buy the program.

So I have put about two hours into trying to buy a $29 program. I'm fed up.

Now your post about the double billing and the company not doing anything about it.

I have to advise my readers (I write for a magazine) to stay away from Bits. They used to be on top of things but have lately had real problems with people being able to purchase programs.

So with this comment (that might get torn down) I bid farewell to Bits. It's just not worth the hassle. It's like F. Gump, buying on Bits you never know what it going to happen.

Sidenote: It seems to me that Bits staff take Sundays off (reasonable). But if they do that they should not run any offers. A few times I have seen on a Sunday evening that people's comments, questions and concerns go unanswered. That Wondershare debacle last night was a good example. The entire night people were posting about an inability to purchase the program and there was no one answering people's concerns, not from Bits or Wondershare.

Bits should require that featured software have the developer available to answer inquiries. This really hurts Bit's reputation in the long term. Word gets out that the Site is unreliable and/or questionable.

Frank Stephens Wow, Michael Mortimer, what a long rant about another, unrelated offer. While I'm a little disappointed that the vendors here don't test their ordering procedures more carefully, as complaints about ordering problems aren't uncommon, don't go blaming WordWeb for your Wondershare problem. When PayPal is offered as a billing option, as in this case, I use it. I can't be double-charged, and if I don't receive my purchase, I probably have some recourse from PayPal and certainly from the bank which provides my credit card. There was a minor issue with WordWeb's ordering page, which I could have handled with multiple orders, but Antony Lewis fixed it. He's been responsive to user inquiries, so I think that it's unfair to blame WordWeb or BDJ for occasional problems with some vendors.

S B I'm happy to continue to recommend this WordWeb Pro. I have used it for years and it's wonderful. It's an instant dictionary andthesaurus (etc.), very fast , convenient, intensely useful, and always instantly available . It has short, but not too short definitions with examplesof use. It separates each definition by part of speech. It's thesaurus has "synonyms," "types of," and "types" so you can easily find the related variant you seek. It's lookupallows you to quickly find words you've misspelled, it does partial matches, has pronunciation, full-text lookup into the definitions (e.g., "light" and "metal" or "yellow" and "flower" to find definitions with both), anagrams, web lookup, etc. ,etc. All always instantly available. I recommend WordWeb without reservation.

Stephane M Could you tell me how the license is working? Is it working per user? Per machine? How long is a license valid for?   How does it work for the upgrades? Can I get minor and major upgrades within the period of the license? Thank you!!
May 24 2010 at 6:23am Copy Link

Antony Lewis Regarding USB: yes, there's an option to install to a USB stick.

The license is per machine, or per user if you exclusively use two machines (ie. it is OK to install on your laptop and desktop if you are the only user of both).

The license does not expire. Major upgrades may be charged, minor updates are free. There are no plans for a major upgrade at the moment.

Hope this helps.

Jason Howard Are there a dictionary available for Information Technology acronymns and definitions? If not, does the program support (ie documented) end users creating their own word lists or dictionaries etc? Would be nice if users could add their own content and perhaps exchange with other WordWeb users. Could also be extended in other areas such as Finance & Economics, Legal, Medical etc useful for students too.

Deleto Maximo Hi,
I need to understand the big deal here. The dictionary and thesaurus are based on Princeton University's WordNet, which is available free of charge (http://wordnet.princeton..../download/).

WordWeb also integrates a look-up feature for various online resources, which are free of charge, as well, and can just as well be queried from within modern plugins (under one integrated UI).

So why would I spend $59 or $29 here? Am I missing something?
Thank you!
May 31 2011 at 7:52pm Copy Link

Antony Lewis Jason: WordWeb has features for creating your own custom glossaries (and importing and exporting custom databases of definitions).

Sebastian: WordWeb is indeed originally based on WordNet, but it's not the same - there are over 10,000 words in WordWeb that are not in WordNet, plus many updates, clarifications and corrections. You also get pronunciations, derived forms and locale usage information.

Mitchell Kastner How is WordWeb different from (and preferable to) Babylon.

Does WordWeb Pro have more tabbed views---like "Similar"---than the free version?

I still do not understand "word lists" and how they are used. Can you explain further?

Regards,

MK
Jun 1 2011 at 2:42am Copy Link
0
Antony Lewis I don't use Babylon so cannot comment on that.

The tabbed views are the same in the free and Pro version, though the Pro version has about 6000 more words (and many more audio pronunciations).

Word lists are for word finding, e.g. for crosswords words matching a pattern, or finding phrases containing a specific word, or words that end in specific letters (possible rhymes).

Add-on dictionaries (Oxford and Chambers) can only be viewed in WordWeb - they appear in separate tabs. You can change which dictionary is the default.

SoftCollector Dear Developer,

I am not a stranger to dictionaries. Being a professional translator, I own and use daily: OED v4 (the world's most comprehensive English dictionary), ABBYY Lingvo X5, Babylon, etc.

How is WordWeb Pro different and is there reason to buy it if you own the above mentioned? Are there any custom-made dictionaries with Bulgarian available?

What is the word list based on? Unlike other software, starting a dictionary from scratch is quite difficult, not to say impossible.

Kind Regards,
SC

Antony Lewis SoftCollector: I'm not familiar in detail with the programs you refer to. but WordWeb does make it very quick and easy to look up words in almost any program, and quickly cross-reference to the web or other optional add-on dictionaries (e.g. Chambers). It is rather different in content and organisation from most traditional references.

Sorry, no Bulgarian dictionaries.

Frank Stephens SoftCollector, WordWeb Pro comes with a decent dictionary and thesaurus, the little blue dots on the order page
http://wordweb.info/order...ml?CUR=USD#
give additional information on the word lists (they don't have definitions). WordWeb Pro can integrate other dictionaries, click on the Show All link to see them all. I ordered most of them, I probably would have been better off to order the Ultimate Reference Bundle. Most of the WordWeb dictionaries have recorded pronunciations. The full OED is available online via subscription; the full version on CD-ROM is pricey, so if you already have that, I can understand why you may not want other dictionary software. You can always check out the WordWeb trial.

SoftCollector Dear Frank,

thank you for providing clarification. Yes, OED is one of a kind and it costs an arm and a leg. :) ABBYY Lingvo X5 offers translation between 20 languages (with Russian as core) and is unparalleled. Babylon is great, because you can make your own dictionaries - apart from that I do not use it often, as it is inferior to OED for English to English.

Dear Antony,

Any chance WordWeb Pro Reference Bundle will also be offered with a discount (as part of this promotion or later on)? As a professional translator I know there is no reason to go for the lesser versions - the words I am usually looking for cannot be found there.

Thanks,
SC

It looks like the Pro US Reference Bundle does not include the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary", which is the best one they offer anyway... But it can get had from the Buy Now button... I do not see any way to get the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary" except through Bitsdujour.
I wonder why they only offer it through this deal???

A question for anyone that has used them...
Is there any reason to get the "New Oxford American Dictionary" AND the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary"?

I already own the two volume photo reduced version of the full "Oxford English Dictionary"(4 pages per page!!!... I am glad it came with the magnifier!... And they make a 1 volume version with 9(!) pages per page!!!). But a computer version would be nice.

SoftCollector I have OED v4 installed as an upgrade to OED v3.1.1. There is an option called X-Reference in WordWeb which allows for the search of 3-rd party dictionaries and looking up words in them.

For some reason it detects the older version of OED and starts it, but not the new one.

It does not detect ABBYY or Babylon.

Can this function be improved / further developed? The above mentioned are among the most widely used electronic dictionaries today.

Frank Stephens James Kenney, I have everything except the Australian and Canadian dictionaries. The region-specific dictionaries have usages and audio pronunciations specific to that region. Yes, it's all English, so there's overlap, but there are also differences. You don't have to order additional dictionaries now, you can order them later (I did). WordWeb will supply you with a personal order download page which keeps track of all of your purchases, handy for reinstalling and downloading updates.

Fletch My 2 cents:

1. 6.72 means 7.0 (and another $35) is likely near. 1 year of updates would be more comforting.

2. As others suggested the Reference Bundle would increase the temptation significantly - in spite of #1.

Never considered anything like this but the fact that it's available and looks nice makes me think I might get hooked on it. So it's bookmarked now so I can keep an eye on it.

Roderick Nicolson I'm thinking of buying this version too, however... I had version 5 before (perhaps the seller remembers this) but when I went to update it (there was an opportunity to update to the next version up) I was accused of giving my serial number to others which I never did.
Without any opportunity to justify myself the carpet was cut right out from under me which, at the time, I thought was exceedingly harsh.
I was treated as if I'd never bought the product and wasn't allowed to update. All communication was cut off and it made me feel like I was a criminal because that was the way I'd been treated.
I can only guess, if it did happen, that my computer must have been hacked and the serial number taken (though it does seem strange because I've always used good paid for protection, in the way of Kaspersky, and other malware protection.

My question then to the seller is: If I did buy this version of WordWeb Pro, what assurance do I have that you won't pull the rug from under my feet again?

Antony Lewis Sorry if you had problems, I'm not sure what you mean about communication being cut off (if you didn't get a reply to an email, most likely it was being accidentally spam-blocked). Gr3gw I've been using WordWeb for over 12 years. All I can say is I wouldn't be without out it. If you need one dictionery (and thesaurus) that works across 99% of applications, this is a good one. I wouldn't know if there is a better one as I'm completely satisfied with WordWeb and have never felt the need to look for another.

Gr3gw Steven, I've just looked at the WordWeb website and can't find where you order the extra dictionaries. As I said, I got mine about five years ago. The Oxford Shorter English Dictionary and Chambers (definitions and thesaurus) came as a package. Now it looks as if Chambers may be included in the Pro version. I think the WordWeb needs to give a definitive explanation as it looks like things have changed.

Why have the extra dictionaries? I find I'm always using Chambers or OSED in preference to the the standard WordWeb dictionary. There's more words and the definitions can be more extensive. Also, I use the thesaurus a lot and there wasn't one at that time.

Frank Stephens There's just no comparison between scouring the web (which WordWeb will do) and the information which WordWeb provides. Well worth the money for people who are serious. WordWeb keeps track of all of your purchases for re-downloading later, no hassle. Just keep your license number and ordering email address, you can change your email address later (the email address alone can be used to retrieve your license number).

@DrTeeth, @Greg Istered, WordWeb wants to stay in business, you can start with WordWeb Pro 7 Bundle and add on later, but if you know that you want additional dictionaries, you can check if one of the other bundles would be a better deal for you. I started with a WordWeb bundle and later wound up buying most of the major add-on dictionaries, it's that useful and although some of the dictionaries overlap, I find the differences useful.

_*_ Well, of course I would like to see 50% off every item, but it seems clear that is not going to take place.

What I would like to suggest is during sales such as these the add-ons might be reduced by 20% or 25%.

It would give greater incentive to purchase items together.

Personally, I think upgrading should be a less costly then what I can get waiting for a Bits sale.

The same price here on Bits as upgrading is no monetary incentive to purchase.

It seems like a bit of a dance here, as the developer desires more customers to make money, and as consumers, we would like the best deal possible. It is about the bottom line for each side.

Noggin The Nog What are the word lists for, if, as I gather, no meaning or other explanation is given for the words in the lists?

How can I check what the "ordering email address" is? I do not recall any email address being asked for explicitly, and nowadays sometimes a temporary email address used in PayPal is automatically snatched from PayPal by the seller, which leads to problems and confusion later when either the software seller tries to contact the purchaser or the purchaser needs to show the seller that he is the purchaser. The seeds of this confusion can already be seen in the last reply above, which does not make clear whether "...you can change your email address later (the email address alone can be used to retrieve your license number)." means that you can change the licence details which "alone can be used to retrieve your license number". Can I change the "ordering email address"?

I would not have picked up the need to record the "ordering email address" if I had not read this dialogue. Even the email address that the download link was sent to was obscured by substituting my name for that address in the "To" field. It is an example of how excessive automation can create a bear trap for the unwary. The buyer should be allowed to determine what email address his software is registered under.
Jan 6 2014 at 5:19am Copy Link

Antony Lewis Any emails you have used with WordWeb will all be linked to your licence number. Your default email will be also be updated when you order (from the email you give when you order).

Word lists are for word finding, i.e. finding words matching a pattern, phrases containing a word, words ending in specfic letters, solving crosswords, etc.

Frank Stephens @Noggin The Nog, most email systems have an option like "Show Header." It will show the address emails were sent to (near the bottom of the header). I used to use different email addresses, but ran into similar problems and no longer find it very useful. I now use my Gmail address as my primary account, I like the features and spam filter. No matter what service you use, you must carefully check the spam folder frequently (Google will even place their own mail in Spam). If your PayPal email address doesn't match your primary email address, it can cause ordering problems as well as potentially overriding your primary email address. I was trying to summarize multiple issues in my earlier post, your WordWeb email address is sufficient to return both your license number and download links (all on one page, after a return email), changing your email address (which can be done on the website) requires your order number and old and new email addresses. What I don't like is that is doesn't require you to enter your new email address twice, so you must be extra careful that it was entered correctly.

I will go to the website and see if I can work out how to change the email address. I do not know what Antony Lewis means by "Any emails you have used with WordWeb"

The problem from my point of view is that the email was presumed via Paypal instead of being explicitly requested of me.

In the case of the email I received with the download link Outlook was not able to show the email address it was sent to - something to do with the mechanism by which my name was substituted for the email address in the "To" field, I should think.

You can however go into PayPal and add more emails. Then you can make the one you want to use the default email. That way the info will be sent through the email you want it to be sent through.
Have you noticed how businesses are becoming more and more inflexible and are making it harder and harder for customers by forcing them to go through all kinds of awkward loops and over impossibly difficult obstacles.
I'm finding more and more, that businesses are tying us down to our email addresses by tying them to our accounts, and with little thought of the difficulties that causes, especially when that email address has become problematic or obsolete, as no way is given to change it except by opening another account.
It seems that someone else is building all the databases, and the internet businesses are no longer in control of how these databases are formed or how they function.
Hmmmmmm!

Could you offer any suggestions on how someone could use WordWeb to improve their vocabulary? Can you create custom word lists?

I'm currently using Excel to store words and definitions that are new to me. I was hoping WordWeb might have a better solution.

Thank you.

David Vaughan I have the v6 WordWeb Pro Bundle. The v8 upgrade price is nearly the same as this BitsDuJour special which is fine.

The upgrade page lists the Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus (optional extra dictionary) as v13:
Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus
The complete 13th edition Chambers plus the Chambers Thesaurus

The BitsDuJour order shows this optional extra dictionary as v12:
Chambers Dictionary and Thesaurus
The complete 12th edition Chambers plus the Chambers Thesaurus

I assume they are both the same version and one page or the other has a typo?

Oh, now I see you already mentioned in a previous comment:
"The Chambers dictionary and thesaurus have free updates to the latest editions, automatically available from the download page..."

HJ B It seems to me that the promotional blurb for this product has a glaring grammatical error. It gives the illustration "Adjective: Pleasant (pleasanter, pleasantist)"

In fact, the comparative and superlative of Pleasant are: "more pleasant" and "most pleasant".

When did you ever hear someone say, "This was pleasanter than the last time" or "This was the pleasantist time I ever had"?

Antony Lewis KH: The GUI will reflect global windows preferences, e.g. for title bar colour, etc.
There is no advantage to using this offer rather than the upgrade, the price is the same.

HJ B: "pleasanter" is not an error, both forms are acceptable, depending a bit on context: e.g. "the pleasanter side of the river" is fine. There are many examples from Thackeray to today's papers.

Charles Beauchamp Good gosh 'pleasanter' is probably present in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary that is available from this source. Unclamp your teeth DrTeeth, you are biting on the wrong bone.

This is an incredible product that represents not only the English language well but also has links to Wikipedia and a lot of customization features.

This is a product in its "unlimited network" version should be owned by every school, college, university and medical school in the country.

I am pushing for an Electronic Medical Record vendor to include it with great customizations that can be done into the narrative note portion of their EMR. Its potential is virtually unlimited to customize for the needs of a profession. It can be customized to a great extent to meet specific information management needs of a whole profession such as medicine. I bet if DrTeeth is an intelligent dentist he would recognize this potential also.

HJ B Generally, comparative and superlative of single syllable can use er/est. Generally, including pleasant, multiple syllable words take more/most.

Imagine someone saying, "She is beautifulest" or "She is beautyifulest". On the hand, it is proper to say fuller/fullest.

There are quite a few expressions that were common a hundred years ago, that are rarely, if every used today. Moreover, Thackeray's formative years, into adulthood, were in India, where he was born.

As has been noted, it is clear that the er/est forms of pleasant simply to do ring true to the present-day, reasonably educated, native English-speaking ear.

As far as this dictionary application is concerned, it is, at the very least, astonishing that it presents the er/est form as the primary form applicable to this word. For that reason, I would not rely upon the application for matters as to which I might have a question.
Jun 3 2016 at 5:06am Copy Link
0
Antony Lewis The Oxford Dictionary of English indeed also lists these forms. How common it is may well vary regionally as well as in time and context, so for some people it will sound odd, but not for others. Here's a modern quote from the Economist: "Plotting a pleasanter future for Nigeria’s business capital".

(But thanks for the suggestion of more clearly emphasizing that these forms are used but not necessary; WordWeb currently does not list the "most, most" forms, which are generally applicable to most adjectives.)

Gde Swart WordWeb is a fantastic piece of software. I've been using it, almost daily, since version 6.x and so far every upgrade has been worthwhile. If you do a lot of writing (or a lot of reading) you'll absolutely love it.
The power to cross-reference multiple sources by simply clicking on tabs is wonderful. It sits quietly in the tray (using minimal resources) just waiting for "Ctrl+right click" or a simple click on the tray icon. If you copy a word to the clipboard and click the icon, it appears with the definition. Start typing in the Lookup area and the possible spellings appear until you find the word you're looking for.
The bundle here is a great start and probably plenty for non-word enthusiasts. Over the years I've added the NOAD and Chambers set and someday I plan to pick up the SOED.
The X-Ref feature discovered both Mobysaurus and an old copy of Encarta that I had previously installed. You can manually include others if they don't show up automatically. I've also added tabs for www.bartleby.com - www.wikiquote.org - www.phrases.org.uk just to further round out my set of writing tools.
My takeaway as a long time user: It's powerful, user friendly and highly recommended.

Gary Mugford When I went to the processing page, I found a price of 49 CAD dollars awaiting me. The exchange rate today makes 29 USD roughly 39 CAD. A 25 percent surcharge of ten dollars kills my desire to make the transaction. I like the free product and really don't need all the doodads and whizzyfigs that the pro version has. But I THOUGHT I wanted to reward hard work. Ergo, I won't even pay the 29 USD price that can be found by switching funds and letting PayPal take a much lesser cut. It's a principle sort of thing. I recommend the product. I don't recommend buying it with Canadian dollars.

This is the same in the Pro version, though you can remove WordWebOnline if you want to or add other web reference sites. It should be fast after the first page load (also check Browser tab options in Settings, Preferences).

WordWeb does include phrasal verbs and some expressions. Various add-on dictionaries (e.g. Oxford) are available if you want more options.

Egon User After buying WordWeb Pro, I had to realize that I had lost my money (20$ (EDIT: 19$) plus VAT), since all the dictionary web sites I had been interested in, were rendered in a way that didn't make their info readily available to me, and with an ad defender, it outright got impossible; I had to realize that obviously, the developer had selected the freely-available sites (free/trial, non-"Pro") in a way that those problems didn't appear before making my purchase decision.

(I obviously speak of the "standard", English, two-language and one-language dictionary, and thesaurus sites you will want to use this alternative browser interface with, not of "exotic" sites with possible non-standard, additional problems.)

Thus, your task of quick-n-easy, concurrent access to several standard web dictionaries for the same search term will unfortunately not be met by WordWeb Pro, you will have to write some little macros instead, so my hint for you here, don't try to interact with the searchbars of those sites but analyze their respective search URLs after having fired up their regular search, then write your macro(s) accordingly - and you should get 1-key navigation between your browser tabs, and a little macro getting you to some "homepage" of your own as your search "home base" (then "close other tabs", in order to fire off the whole set again with your next search term, but without closing your browser in-between); as an intermediate solution, there are free browser add-ins (of very different quality though) which direct your input into the respective site searchbar, without fiddling with the mouse in case.

As for non-web dictionaries, etc., there always Oxford Shorter Dictionary, Chambers Thesaurus (30/10$ on MS), as well as the multiple UltraLingua dictionaries (12$ each, e.g. Eng-Spanish/French and vice versa and many more), all of them are a steal in their own way (the UltraLingua dictionaries are WAY beyond of what you'd expect for 12 bucks), and I can speak about them, as well as of WordWeb Pro since I all own them (for UL, the language combis only I'm in need of, of course), with buyer's remorse just for the latter.

The "ideal" solution would be to get out just the core info from the web sites, but whilst you could do that individually, no developer may sell such a tool, for obvious legal reasons; presenting an inferior, alternative browser being not a real alternative... but kudos to the developer to have hidden that core info from me, by very neatly selecting the sites available in his tool before buying: smart guy indeed!

Oh, sorry, that wasn't on purpose, no, no, no - it was just his good luck and my bad one. Oh yeah.
