pp br When ordering from the zabkat site, it is possible to purchase an xplorer² portable edition (bundle) option, to have a portable version of the software (this is an extra 10$).

Can I get this as well in the bits du jour deal?

Jean-Louis Jelpy Quick questions as a long time Total Commander (TC) user interested in newer capabilities of xplorer²:
- what can Total Commander do that xplorer² does NOT do: I really need FTP transfer but not only
- what can xplorer² do that Total Commander does NOT do; major difference I see is integrated file content preview: PDF, images, etc.something that should decide me to get it if xplorer² does not lack major TC functionality (I don't want to run 2 programs; enough are concurrently running already)

Thanks,

Jean-Louis

nikos x2 Jean-Louis, I would say that both TC and x2 can do the same things but xplorer2 should be more straightforward to use. Last time I compared the programs I found xplorer2 had the edge in performance, see:
http://zabkat.com/blog/27May07.htm

since you are a TC user and I'm not, have a look at these demo videos and see for yourself if x2 has got any extra tricks for you:

Mystified Bythis site Can someone enlighten me. First time at this site and can't find any clear statement as to what happens. So far I've paid for Xplorer2, but as to the next step ?

All I've had so far is an email saying that it could take up to 12 hrs to process my order. I've been given no indication of whether I'm supposed to download the program from this site or the developer's site? Or what the 24-hour deadline means. Is it 24 hours to pay for and download from this site, or just to pay?

So many questions.... any help much appreciated.

A User After you pay you should receive an email from the credit card processor and then Zabkat (the developer) with your user registration key to tell the program that you own a license.

Download xplorer2 from the web site.

Unfortunately, the credit card processor here is Plimus, which has a history of unfortunate, loooong, and failed processing--and indifferent and fatuous customer support.

On an order some time ago, it took almost two weeks before they told me that they couldn't authenticate me, even though they had immediately taken the money from my account.

Software Guy What is your upgrade policy? Also, what does the licensing allow - all single user computers, or Desktop plus laptop, or other? Thanks!
Dec 11 2009 at 1:45am Copy Link

nikos bozinis you can read about the upgrade policy here: www.zabkat.com/x2up.htm

the licensing is quite liberal, it counts users not computers, so 1 key is good enough for all the computers you have exclusive access to. See Help Licence agreement for more details

Drake Malliard This is a very good file manager, except for the unattractive icons and colors. The interface is frankly an eyesore. If looks do not count, why use a GUI at all?! To the developer: Maybe you should atleast allow the user to change the background of the toolbar area to blue.

Bob S One very annoying aspect of xplorer2...

I have xplorer2 but find one aspect very annoying. I would like for files to be displayed by default in alphabetical order... unfortunately, I haven't been able to get xplorer2 to do this, despite instructions from the developer. As a result, files appear in some order (mostly alphabetical) but files that I may have used most recently are not alphabetized. As a result, I'm always having to click on the File Name Col. heading to alphabetize so that the file I'm looking for appears where I would expect. I'm considering switching to Directory Opus (although it is 3x more expensive).

George Davis Does this price also apply to the 64 bit version? When I downloaded via the "Try before you buy" button, the installer told me that there is a specific version for 64 bit Windows (which I'm running).

Shankar A I have used the free version of this program for some time now. It does not support replacing the windows explorer, so that clicking on My documents or My computer will open xplorer. Does the full version do that?
Jan 5 2011 at 7:01pm Copy Link
0
Doug Atkinson @shankar, When I recently installed an update for Xplorer2, it asked me if I wanted to install it as a replacement for Explorer for system folders, so it seems that yes, it can replace Explorer. However, I didn't select that option, so I can't try it out to be sure...

I've used xplorer2 for many years and find it indispensable, and I know I don't even know all of the features it has. It seems I often download some little utility freeware, only to find later that capability is already built into xplorer2. The File search tool in Xplorer2 is one of my most used features, along with the file preview pane.

As with any type program, you're going to get used to doing things a certain way. Thus, if you currently use Total Commander (for example), there will likely be things in Xplorer2 that you'll wish operated differently.

H. H. Hallo,
during testing xplorer the following questions occured

1.is there a possbility to keep automatically the original date of a
file / folder when moving to another partition or another disk?
(seems to be very important for me, total commander has this
feature)

2. when searching for duplicte files and checking "content" ist it a
binary comparison, so that it is absolutly reliable (very
important, when used as last instaqnce before deleting the
duplicate files?

3. does the option for renaming when filename already exists -
when copying or moving files - function properly?
(asking this because teracopy form codesector claimed to do
this too, but is very buggy and skips most of the files when
dealing a great number of files)

4. is there a way to keep the xplorer2 features when moving files
within the same disk / partition ??
when I tried to do this, a message (translated from german)
appeared
"ressourcesaving tranfers are only supported when source and
destination are port of the filesystem.
when moving files the destination must be on another drive -
this transfer will done wih normal windows-function, every
additional options and features will be ignored"

!!that can't be true!!?
shall I really loose the attractive opportunities of xplorer (e.g.
filtering, renaming when filename exists) only because I
want to move the files in another folder at the same disk and
not to plug in another drive???
or is there any opportunity to avoid this (without selecting
another drive)??

if not - will you change this in the near future (so that the
customer can decide if he prefers ressourcesaving or if the
additional features of xplorer are more important for him

5. when performing a search, what does the number field (
max.100) after field for name, before the checkboxes for
files/folders mean?
I read about fuzzty search in your manual, but I'm not sure,
what practical effects it has to choose different numbers,
it would be kind if you could give a short explanation

6. is there any limitation in the number of files displayed in the
search dialog (I'm asking this because search-gt had a
limitation of 5000 items in version 2.3, fortunately it is
unlimited now in version 2.4

7. can you say (only approxatemely how fast the search-engine
is in comparison to other non-indexing software (e.g. search-
gt, findonclick,..)?

8. when adding a comment to a folder, it ist not shown in the
comment-column and no popup info when driving mouse
over in xplorer - am I'm doing anything wrong?
the abiliy to add comments not only to files, but also to
folders would be very fine

9. may you consider to put a warning / prompting-message for
the command "Änderungsdatum abgleichen" ? -
I could imagine, that it could too easily happen,
that one may choose the command but didn't really intend to
put all files to the same date - and the danger for loosing the
original date
- which can be very important for sorting, finding,.. -
is very high without the need of a second prompting !
(for people who are sure, that they never will make a mistake
you may have keep the opportunity not to show a prompting
message by choice)

Thank you for answering the bundle of question within the time of bitsdujour offer and considering feature-suggestions in advance
with kind regards
H.H.

Mike B @H.H.

I hate to take this product discussion off topic, but I'm curious about your mention of Search-GT 2.4 - the product page for Search-GT mentions nothing since version 2.3 (from 2008). Do you have a pointer to more info?
Jan 6 2011 at 5:35am Copy Link
0
H. H: Hallo Mike,
yes I contacted the developer of search-gt autumn last year and he responded fast and friendly.
Unfortunately search-gt has not been developed further than version 2.4, although it is unbeatable fast at windows x.p - and that without indexing. The version available at
www.search-gt.com ist version 2.4, although it is written version 2.3. I myself maide the decision to buy search-gt 2.4 although I had a free pc-worlt version 2.3 because of the improvements (unlimited number of results displayed) of version 2.4
I've tried many other serach-engines (non-indexing prefered), but no other was working as reliable and fast for me, so that I bought although I knew that there is no version for vista and windows 7 available until now.
I myself suppose (don't know, just an impression) - that the marketing of search-gt was not as good as the software itself, so search-gt seems to bevery unknown for most people ( really really a pitty, because more biuyers would probably have lead to further development)by the authour.
I read many tests about search- utilities - but hardly could find any mentioning search-gt. Also at many shareware - sites the software is not mentioned.
But for all people still using windows xp I my self would really recommend it
Perhaps bitsdujour may consider to offer it for xp-users later this year?

Hope that helped answering your question

with kind regards
H.H.

PS. 2brightsparks findonclick also seems to be quite fast and can make more specified searches, but if not looking for a text within a file, just searching for file or foldername serach-gt still is my favourite

Stephen Kunkel Highly recommended. I've never been sorry that I bought this software. Yes, v2 recently came out. I think the above screenshots are v1 though. I'd recommend getting the BDJ deal, then later down the road, get the 'life time lic upgrade,' which is $25 US. Also, there's a free Lite version, if you want to check that out. (Though I think it might be a 30-day trial of Pro, that defaults into Lite... Don't remember.) There is a very active forum too http://netez.com/bbs/index.php so you can ask questions. Lastly, there are some cool free tools that forum members have made, which enhance the usability of x2.

Gonzo I hope the developer can clarify the following:
xplorer² is licensed per user.
xplorer² may not be used at the same time on multiple computers.

If it's licensed per user, then the customer should be able to install in as many computers as he owns, so the second statement doesn't make much sense.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @Gonzo: Normally one person does not work with several compters at the same time, so it absolutely makes sense. It still can be installed on more than one computer, but you can only use one installation at a time.

Bruce Have been looking at XYPlorer and Xplorer2 off and on. Both look nice and have large feature sets.
This Xplorer2 deal looks promising.
I would love for the 50% discount apply to the lifetime deal as well.

(I confess to sometimes bewilderment at various vendors' multiple purchase options...)
Looks like:
- regular Xplorer2 = $29.95 Bits du Jour special = $14.95
- regular Lifetime extension = $39.95 (when ordered separately)
- Lifetime extension if bought with Xplorer2 = $29.95 (+ 29.95 = 59.90 bundled price)
So Bits du Jour special with regular bundle-price Lifetime would be 14.95+29.95 = $44.90 I guess.
It would be SUPER if vendor would offer the 50% on total bundle as an option as well.
Here is hoping.

Stephen Kunkel @Greg: I think it can use regexps for file content, but only wildcards for file/folder names... I don't often use them, so not sure. The PDF manual can be downloaded separately here:
http://zabkat.com/alldown.htm
And here is an excerpt from the manual:
"Regular expressions (“RegEx” in short) are used to find text that meets complex search conditions. You can use regular expressions to search text files and those non-text files for which Ifilters are installed on your PC. (We will use a common term, “text”, to mean the contents of all such files.)"
Here's an image of the Find dialog that I just made: http://i.imgur.com/7EsS2.png

@Pricing: See the comment of Nikos Bonzinis, above, he is the developer/distributor. Sounds like you CAN get the pro liscence AND the "life time upgrade assurance" at 50% off, which I recommend.

Joe M xplorer 2 v 2.0 is a good program. It has a lot of features, but I don't think it is as user friendly as other file managers I have tried. I have been using the trial version for about 10 days.

I also find that your online documentation is rather old. You need to update your manual so it reflects your new 64 bit version. I did download you PDF manual version 1.8.0.0.1. It looks rather outdated.

Even though I have some issues with the program I will probably buy it at the 50% discount when it becomes available.

Joe M Benny Edward asked, Is it better than XYplorer?

In my opinion it is much better. I bought the lifetime XYplorer here a few months ago. I have used it, but the more I do the more I don't like.

One feature I really like in xplorer 2 is that columns selection is more customizable then XPplorer. XYplorer is only a 32 bit program, but xplorer2 has a native 64 bit version.
Jan 4 2012 at 7:39am Copy Link

d d Very fine prog indeed, with Comments column being displayed (select by Alt-k) and Quick Search (Menu: Mark - Quick Search, but you can assign a shortkey of your own if you want) to search (by : yoursearchterm Enter within the command line) for files (or even better, filter: ditto but with shift-Enter then) by entries / codes in that Comments column, thus it's possible to do some project management with it, e.g. by entering codes like $a, $b, $abe, $abf, for assigning one file to several projects, to delegate a file to somebody, to encode envisioned further proceeding of the file, etc....

But there is no way to close the Comments dialog (Alt-z) again, preserving changes, but clicking on the ok button with your mouse, which is not handy at all if you use this "tagging" feature again and again, always changing / adding / deleting "tags", upon proceedings with the files in question.

There's Escape, control-F4 and Alt-F4, which all close the dialog, but WITHOUT preserving the changes you've made, and Enter, control-Enter, shift-Enter and alt-enter all insert an unwanted line within the dialog, instead of closing it; a second alt-z does nothing, not working as a (possible) toggle.

Could you add such a feature for keyboard-driven closing of the dialog, please? Or is there a trick that does it already?

Avi S I just purchased xplorer2 here and I am very pleased. Although I did already purchase the extremely flexible, customizable and powerful xyplorer when it was offered here a couple of months ago, I was nevertheless very disappointed with xyplorer when it came to shell integration. Specifically, whenever I copied/moved files within xyplorer, it insisted on invoking the standard (and poor) Windows copy dialog, rather than using my installed third party tools (supercopier2, teracopy); and after inquiring with xyplorer's support I was simply told that it's not supported.
On the other hand, xplorer2 shines when it comes to shell integration. First of all, file operations do indeed use the installed supercopier/teracopy handler. Additionally, it has an option to configure Windows to open all shell windows by default with xplorer2 (that is, I don't need to specifically launch xplorer2; I can work as I normally do, by simply pressing Windows-R for the run dialog, typing in the name of the directory - say, c:\temp - and then the directory immediately opens up within xplorer2).
My only gripe so far regards the keyboard customization window. In xyplorer the keyboard customization window was generously sized and easy to navigate, presenting hundreds of possible actions in a well organized format, and even providing a button to print a "cheat sheet" of all existing shortcuts and their corresponding actions. In xplorer2, in contrast, the keyboard customization window is *tiny* and not even resizeable (it actually looks like a relic from Windows 3.11 days). It is very difficult to locate relevant items, and the options are significantly more limited than xyplorer (for instance, xplorer allows assigning separate keyboard shortcuts for "copy filename to clipboard", "copy full path to clipboard", and "copy just the folder path to clipboard". In xplorer2, as far as I can tell, there is only a single option to copy the whole path). So, if you xplorer2 guys are listening, I would very strongly recommend that the keyboard customization component be revamped: (1) A bigger resizeable window for navigation (2) Ability to do a search to find the action item I am looking for; (3) ability to output a cheat sheet; and, most importantly, (4) to provide more options for keyboard shortcut actions, in line with the flexibility that xyplorer has, most specifically regarding options for copying to clipboard.
Nevertheless, all in all, this product is Highly Recommended!

Lupke Brother @ Benny Edward "Is it better than XYplorer?"

This allways depends on your personal needs. Read a lot of reviews like the ones above and try them both. Xplorer2 is a good tool, but what I don't like about it is that xplorer2 uses Windows Explorer’s built-in file operations. Most other tools use their own file operation system. Correct me if I'm wrong. XYPlorer has a one time fee with a lifetime license (pro version) and a free portable version. Both tools have good support, but I prefer the very responsive and very active developer and support forum from XYPlorer. I'm not saying xplorer2 does not have this ;-) But in the end....you have to figure out which one matches what you do the most and buy that one. You'll do great with both I believe.

At first I didn't understand the confusion, but reading back through I see. I believe what Nikos means is that you can purchase the lifetime OPTION for a reduced price $30, and add it to the cart on top of our $14.97 promo price for the base program.

In other words, our $14.97 + the reduced $30 lifetime upgrade IS the bundle.

Techtoysavvy Yes, Nikos please clarify.
I purchased a copy of version 1 a while back. I was planning on buying the v2 package deal if it was $30. I really just need the lifetime option. Is there any deal on that? It does not make sense for me to buy the combined deal for $45.

nikos bozinis as I said earlier, the lifetime cover is NOT discounted today. If you don't want to spend too much why not just buy v2 for $15 today and worry about upgrades in the future? Another option (if you already own v1.x) is to just purchase the lifetime cover for $40, but you can buy that any day of the week :)

so to recap today you save $15 buying version 2. If you buy the lifetime cover as a bundle you save a further $10 off its regular price, for a total of $45

1) I own a PC and Laptop ... can I use the software on both or do I need 2 licences?

2) Is the 12 month upgrade inclusion only for major releases (v3, v4 etc) or minor (e.g v2.1, v2.2 etc) or even for any bugfixes ?

Simple User @Nikos, the offer sounds great and my experience with the lite shows its a must.

But I still have two questions to the policy description:
1) it says upgrades will be free for 12 months - does this purely refer to a full new version (i.e. explorer2 v3) or minor upgrades (e.g. v2.1) or even also to patches
2) I own a PC and laptop -so do I need two licences or is one sufficient (these are non-multi user only purely me). Here I do not understand the description "...may not be used at exactly the same time on multiple computers."

nikos bozinis further clarifications on the licensing:

1. xplorer2 is sold per user. So if you are just yourself and own 10 computers, you only need one license

2. the portable edition is something EXTRA you buy, and you get both it and the 'normal' version -- you paid for both! The portable version isn't covered by the free lifetime upgrades warranty, see here for more information: http://zabkat.com/x2port.htm

3. Upgrades are guaranteed free for 12 months but usually your free upgrade period stretches much longer (7 years for version 1.x!). However you may be asked to pay at any moment after the first year, unless you also buy the free lifetime upgrades cover.

If by 'it', you mean Plimus, it can't. PayPal is an alternate option on the Zabkat website, but it is not an option via Plimus on the Zabkat website. It's a little confused I know. This is a recent decision by Plimus and one that has more than a few people frustrated, but there's not a lot we can do in the middle of a promotion.

Louis H The Plimus PayPal issue shot this deal down for me. I recently had to cancel my card due to a suspicious charge that I could not account for and won't have a new card for a few more days. Nonetheless, it's a nice utility and hopefully one day such a deal will reappear here at BDJ.
Jan 5 2012 at 3:03pm Copy Link

Jim Ganw Still don't understand why you consider this a Plimus issue? It's a BitDuJour issue. Why would you create a deal whose point is INCREASE sales for a vendor, not reduce sales by limited payment options. And the basic question remains unanswered:
The Zabkat site offers the following payment options:
Plimus
ShareIt
PayPal
TrialPay

Why aren't these same payment options available for the BTJ sale?

There's nothing we can do in the middle of the promotion. End of story. As Nico already stated, we are aware of the Plimus situation and awaiting resolution on their end.

A friend of mine tried to post similar questions but they dont appear here at present so as I'm very interested I thought I'd ask too

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

And I actually purchased ver 1 a while back and let it sit (there are a few excellent file managers out there and I am used to Total Commander). However I will probably take 2 and try to push it into normal use, as I can see some very nice features and dedication, with nicely implemented tabs, saving of configurations and various other goodies.

I had to search around a bit to find a good pic of side-by-side dual pane, found it in the synchronization tips video. I ferget which of the two similarly-named programs resisted dual pane for awhile, so I wanted to see the pic.

Your forums, video, look-and-feel esthetics and dedication are note-worthy. The best type of Bits are these 100% sound companies.

Thanks.

Steven

As an FYI...

I could not access PayPal as an option from either the BDJ link nor the direct link at Zabkat. So AFAIK it is indeed a Plimus issue and not specific to BDJ.

Pay Pal issues aside, I still appreciate all that BDJ and many of the vendors do to bring us really great offers. I missed this one, not due to anything on the part of the vendor or BDJ, but I know that each day brings an opportunity for picking up other great deals on a wide variety of software.

So thanks again to BDJ and Zabkat for this one. I do hope it comes around again soon!

Jonathan Plutchok This has been my favorite file manager for seven or eight years at least (see my old review of an earlier version in http://jonathanstoolbar.b...vered.html ). After all these years, I have still barely scratched the surface of its capabilities. Xplorer2 won a European shareware award a few years ago, too. I say grab this deal while you can.

Elizabeth Bright This looks like a great tool and the portable capability of the ultimate edition is even more of a hook. However, if it's a portable version, why do I need to pick a 32 or 64 bit installer? My work pc is a 64 but my home pc isn't. Does it make a difference which installer we download if really we're going to use it as a portable app? Thanks!

Sputnik I have bought xplorer2 at the end of 2009 at the time there was only one shareware version of it (no Professional and Ultimate versions).

Could it be possible that the actual 50% discount applies to the lifetime upgrades which normally costs 39.95$ for the Professional version and 59.95$ for the Ultimate one at the discounted price of about 19.95$ for the Professional one and 29.95$ for the Ultimate one ?

Just to be much clearer, would it be possible for me to buy only this lifetime upgrades, Professional or Ultimate, when the sale will be active ?

Thank you.

Elizabeth Bright Hi Nikos, That page was actually what triggered my original question. The download installer requires you to pick which PC version you have. But what I'm not clear about is, does that choice impact the functionality of the portable version? If you install using the 32bit, will it be able to work against someone else's 64bit? or something like that? Thank you.

At the beginning of the description we can read this :

"Today we're offering both the Professional and Ultimate versions of xplorer²!"

So you will be able to buy the Ultimate version without the need of buying first the Professional version and then upgrage to the Ultimate one.

nikos bozinis the ultimate version becomes portable as such: first use the installer to unpack the files anywhere (e.g. on the USB stick), Then you have your portable version to carry around. There are more detailed instructions in the page I mentioned

How is it better than xyplorer ? what features if any particualrly apart ?

And can the size of icons be any large and customizable too like in windows 7 explorer - or only some preset or upto a limit size of icons.

I am asking because i tried the free version and it didnt look that good.

Avi S I purchased xplorer2 the last time it was offered in BDJ. It does have quite a lot of useful functionality, and it is, in general, a pleasure to work with. However, I have two primary issues with it (perhaps they have been corrected in the new version?):
1] xplorer2 holds file handles for external drives and prevents them from being safely removed, at least until the users explicitly switches xplorer2 to another drive. This is in contrast to Directory Opus, for instance, where Directory Opus hooks the request for Safe Remove and allows the drive to be removed, gracefully and automatically releasing the handles (unless it is actually in the middle of a file operation). I use many diskonkeys and external drives, plugging and unplugging multiple times per day, and xplorer2 makes this quite difficult, because in order to unplug I have to first seek out the relevant xplorer2 instance and then change it to another drive.
2] speed issues: with xplorer2, when I use the Run box to launch a directory with has several hundred files, there is a noticeable delay (several seconds) until xplorer2 comes up. Have other xplorer2 users experienced a similar delay?

Jason Howard I have been using xplorer² for several years (I've also got xyplorer and dopus - but xplorer² is my first tool of choice).

As nikos said in his blog in June 2009, "Some people write to me to complain how dated xplorer² looks. Ok it is kind of spartan but it's a tool: "you don't put lace on a chainsaw" as one said."

"If you want your software cute and fluffy, use windows explorer — or get a Mac g; if you need a tool for precision file management use xplorer²."

I use xplorer² for what it does, not for how nice it looks. I want a file management tool - not a fisher price toy.

Avi S @Jason - It says a lot for xplorer2 that it is still your first tool of choice, even though you also own dopus. When dopus was offered last month a question was posed on the BDJ forum asking what advantages xplorer2 might have over dopus, but there were no responses.
Could you please share what you find to be the advantages of xplorer2 over dopus?

Jason Howard @Avi S - File managers are very much a matter of personal taste. But I will try to explain why (in my case), I prefer xplorer² - it came down to size, features & cost.

setup.exe size:
- xplorer2 Ultimate 64bit - 1.8 MB
- dopus 10 64bit - 40.2 MB

Features:
For example dopus 10 has just announced support for Windows 7 Libraries (in Apr 2011). This is a really important feature for me as I use libraries a lot. That's why I'm happy X² supported them in Nov 2009. dopus tries to cover a lot of ground, many features most people would never or rarely use. Which is probably why features core to the product or operating system get implemented years after the competition do it. Some features of dopus, I prefer to use dedicated 3rd party apps instead (like integrating Filezilla FTP into X² - instead of having a less capable client built in. For me, having a built in FTP Client or Slideshow program is just something else to take development resources away from what should be the core focus of a file manager. Do you need a clock radio on your bicycle?

In fact as I look at the changelogs - I get the feeling that a lot of effort is going into making dopus look "shiny" and "nice", and the changelog for X² much of the focus seems to be directed towards actual file management features.

http://zabkat.com/changes.txt
http://resource.dopus.com...um.php?f=1

The dopus support forums announce:

"Here's a quick recap of the year-and-a-bit between Directory Opus 10.0 and 10.1.
In total, we released 33 free updates, containing about 727 changes:"

Like this is something to be proud of. I realise some people view getting an "update" or a "patch" is like getting a free program and each update is "better value for money". The developers when trying to sell me on an upgrade from v9 to v10 of dopus, actually tried this metric - "look how many updates and bug fixes we have released over the years".

When it comes to cost, I have my own theories why dopus is so much more expensive than X² or xyplorer or total commander or....

To the users who agree that dopus is expensive - they say "you get what you pay for" - and I say, you are welcome to keep paying for it.

Lifetime Upgrades-add to software price: ($29.95 or $49.95 for Pro/Ult)

Professional= $14.97+29.95 = 44.92
Ultimate = $24.97+49.95 = 74.92

Neil I'm a DOpus user (for two or three years) I've always been pretty happy with it. Some of the new GUI changes that came with the latest major version are a bit clumsier to me though. And I don't find the file searching as fast or convenient as my older shell, XYExplorer. And the cost is pretty high, including upgrades.

What would you say the strengths are for Xplorer2 relative to DOPus? (not saying you have to diss the program, just highlight things you think are better)?

Other more specific questions (I'm sure I can dig through the doc and find this, but if you can answer, it will help as I'm busy today and might otherwise miss the deal):

- Is there full regular expression support for filters and file searching?
- Any integration with indexed filename search, like "SearchEverything" (a great free program) or is it as fast as that?
- One of the features of DOPus very important to me is the powerful batch rename feature. How does x2 compare?
- Does a single license cover both a desktop and laptop (for one user)?
- Does it support any search and replace functions across files? (Right now I'm using ReplaceStudio for that but I don't like it's nonstandard regular expression syntax...I prefer the Pythonic (like PERL) style.)

I certainly don't mind having two or three shells installed in any case, so I might just buy it anyway (I still also have a lifetime license to XYPlorer which I sometimes use for file finding, though SearchEverything pretty much eliminated the need for it).

J Scott I know this is licensed by user, so maybe my question isn't really appropriate but I'm curious about Ultimate's USB-stick-ability. From what I have read it sounds like you install it to a USB-Stick at the initial time of install. Can you also actually install it to a computer too? (So you have one install living on a computer and the other on the USB drive?)

I have my home PC and a dual-boot netbook (Win 7/XP), for example, and wouldn't mind having xplorer2 on a stick when working on friends' or family computers. I assume since it's licensed per user and these are all my personal PCs (which no one else uses) this is all ok.. am I correct?

(I'll just add I also purchased this when it was on BdJ last, but not the ultimate version so I'm thinking for $5 more than just upgrading I can have 2 separate licenses.. might come in handy someday. :) )

Rick Truell Elizabeth Bright: I noticed that nobody actually got around to answering your questions, so thought I'd take a stab at it...hope you're still around to see this :-) You asked:

"However, if it's a portable version, why do I need to pick a 32 or 64 bit installer? ... Does it make a difference which installer we download if really we're going to use it as a portable app?"

Yes, it actually *does* make a difference (a couple, in fact), and the main difference should be pretty obvious...the 64-bit version will not run on a 32-bit OS. But even though the 32-bit version will (or at least should) run on a 64-bit OS, there is a catch (and probably more than one)...any 64-bit shell extensions that have been installed will not be available in a 32-bit file manager. The reverse is also true...any 32-bit shell extensions installed (for use with 32-bit programs) on a 64-bit OS will not be available in a 64-bit file manager.

The basic rule-of-thumb is very simple: on a 64-bit OS, only run 64-bit software...unless there simply isn't a 64-bit version of a program you need. And if there isn't, e-mail the company asking why not...after all these years, there just isn't a good reason for there *not* to be a 64-bit version.

Mark Johnson This is an excellent piece of software that is well worth the full price, and a steal at the price offered. I have been using xplorer2 for years, and feel the loss on a computer that does not have it.

@Luther - This is similar to Directory Opus, but is a little more dedicated to pure file handling than DO is. For example, XP2 has commands to manipulate a set of files in one pane into the other pane, has a much more involved (and faster) search than DO, and has extremely useful scrap (and mini scrap) panes for file searches and manipulation.
On the other hand, there are a number of things DO does better than XP2. It integrates with Windows more, looks better, and replaces several other utilities. XP2 concentrates more on Explorer replacement and file handling than the 'do everything' approach of DO, and costs much less than DO.

nikos bozinis @James Bowater that's not correct. If you bought the separate lifetime cover for v1.x it entitles you to a free v2 PROFESSIONAL key (and beyond). It won't give you the ultimate version only

Karl M. Regarding lifetime license:

I purchased xplorer2 in 2005. At this time there was only one license type: lifetime.

But after that "fake" version change to 2.x I don't get any more updates.

Edward Smith I find this to be a good program and reasonably priced. I just purchased 2 licenses despite Xplorer2 not having dual tree which I (and apparently a lot of other people from what I have read) believe to be important. I made this purchase strictly to support you as I will continue to use Opus because I like dual tree which is THAT important to me. I have tried to use scrap and mini-scrap and dual pane, but none work like dual tree. I hope you will consider adding this in the future. It certainly appears to be plenty of customers who have requested it on your web site.

John M For what it's worth, I just bought xplorer2 Pro. I have also purchased Directory Opus and XYplorer. I went from XYplorer to Dopus. Dopus certainly had many features--and took forever to launch (unless you tell it to launch at startup, in which case Windows takes forever to launch!). xplorer2 is way, WAY faster! And it seems much more to my liking.
So, as far as an initial impression by someone who has purchased all 3, I would recommend xplorer2 far above the others!

DroidLuvr This really sounds like a great program, but any offer with "no return" or "no refund" policy at all is never acceptable IMO. The trial, especially here on BDJ, when the time is so limited (even with the extended day today) is not enough -- at least for me -- to evaluate a program, especially one that is so complex.

I don't understand any company that does not offer any kind of satisfaction guaranteed product.

Too bad this combination is not offered today.

Avi S @John M -
Regarding startup time, my experience is exactly the opposite. If I type "dopus" at the command line, Directory Opus comes up within one second; however, if I type "xplorer2", the window does not come up for 5-8 seconds. That's a very serious lag.
Nikos - if the 5-8 second delay is abnormal, I would be interested in working with you to isolate the problem. For instance, is there a debug mode that I can enable which would provide you with information on the issue?

Jason Howard @Avi S - I'd suggest that for matters relating to product support - you repost your questions in the xplorer² community forum.

http://netez.com/bbs/

(dopus loading quickly would be because it has been pre-loaded, and the required libraries etc are already in memory. As for a slow startup to xplorer² - check for drive mappings to network connections that do not exist - for starters). my xplorer loads in less that a second on all of my pcs.

DroidLuvr @ IneedHelp / zabkat: I find your comment to be rather inane, because at least 95-99% of the other vendors featured here offer some refund policy: anywhere from 7 days to a full year -- just look around the site and you will see I am not exaggerating (30 days seems to be the standard...)

I have made over 25 purchases here this year alone, and I have only had occasion to make one return (for a program that just didn't quite work for my setup and needs.) It was a problem that I couldn't possibly have discovered within a few hours' use; in fact it took me over 60 days of trying and working with the vendor's support department to find that it just wouldn't meet my needs -- the vendor had a 90-day return policy, and the return was cheerfully and immediately granted by the vendor! [Obviously, I knew that that by returning it, I would cease using the program and remove it from my computer when I received the refund...]

If you are truly confident in the user experience of your program, it seems your policy would include a customer satisfaction guarantee for a period of time longer than the single day of the offer.

Just my 2 cents... and the only reason I personally passed on your offer.

IneedHelp DroidLuvr, nice story, bro, but do not mistake me for the developer. I am but a client. According to your twisted logic, every comment that favors some software must be posted by the developer from a different account, no? (and just in case you still think you're some smart ass, you can check the xplorer2 forum, where I am an active member using the same nickname).

But if I would be an independent software developer, by no means would I offer any refund policy. And that's not because I wouldn't be confident about the quality of my software, but because there's a lot of people that can take advantage of such an offer.

Also, you seem to be thinking that everyone here has just heard about of x2 and requires some time to get familiar with, thus a refund policy should be offered. Well, there are a lot of people that already knew about x2 and just waited for the offer.

You can keep your 2 cents for the next deal.

Mark Johnson @Justin Cram -- with xplorer2 you can create a folder junction through the copy/paste menu. Basically you copy a folder, go to where you want the junction, and do 'Edit - Paste special - Folder junction'.

however, you can do the same in dopus, through clipboard / pastelink. The target can be junction, hardlink, softlink, or relsoftlink. NTFS links are supported on NTFS on Vista and high OS, and are default when using those systems instead of junction.

Still, there seems to be a lot to like here, and - primarily on the basis of the sample videos / help files, am placing an order for the Ultimate version, in the hopes that it will prove a suitable replacement for the no longer trustworthy PowerDesk (a long-time personal favorite).

Steven Avery Hi,

xplorer2, Xyplorer and Total Commander are 3 generally superb products, inexpensive, good forums, etc.

(DOpus is good but more $ and many freebies like Free Commander are good on a less elegant level.) It is worth it to own at least one of the 3, and maybe more.

We discussed this on DonationCoder. I am used to Total Commander for its simple in-your-face dual-pane approach. (Which you can do with all the programs, ultimately) However I get nervous with TC on super large folders with multi-thousands of files. In my experience, xplorer2 and Xyplorer are very fine for that need. I will say that when I asked for a new feature (a date top-level sort on a multi-level sort that ignores the time) Xyplorer had my request in a Beta version in 2 hours !. That was impressive. http://www.donationcoder....ic=33470.0 xplorer2 did not have the feature.

However that being said, all three programs have strong pluses. I own this program too, from a while back, and am glad I have a license, for the pro, that nicely allowed the one-year update to 2.2. a couple of days ago.

So, I'll probably live nicely with what I have and then in a year or so consider going directly to an ultimate or 3.0 or something of that nature.

Since I am in the one-year I should check to see if there is some ultimate upgrade that is available .. today .. and why in the world I would want the ultimate anyway !

Guy User They add tax (= of the VAT % from the destination country). That's illegal !

If the product here in the US costs 14.97$, I suppose that's included with the US VAT tax.

So adding another VAT % from the destination country is not normal. This way one pays VAT 2x !!!!
Jan 4 2013 at 8:16am Copy Link
0
Roger Thomasson @ John

This is absolutely normal and absolutely not illegal. We don't expect vendors to subsume taxes applied by destination countries and nor should you.

We don't like VAT either, but we can't change national policy!
BitsDuJour Admin - Jan 4 2013 at 8:25am Copy Link

Louis H John, in the US there is currently no automatically added on VAT tax for most folks who make a purchase online. So the price when stated in terms of US dollars is strictly the MSRP. When we do pay tax on something purchased in the US it is added on at the time of purchase. Just like the VAT overseas. Right now there is a lot that can be purchased online within the US that does not get a sales tax added on. (Our politicians on the state and federal level are working to try and change that.) :-(

The VAT,as I understand it, is something that is simply added on to any purchase made within the boundaries of a country that charges the VAT and the Vendor, nor BDJ has any control over that.

You are NOT, however, getting taxed double, as there is no US tax already added into the price as stated. If someone in the US has to pay a tax because of which state they live in, it would also be added onto the sale price as stated for today's deal.

Hope that helps....
Jan 4 2013 at 2:15pm Copy Link
0
Guy User I don't think you understand it. The price is tax included or not, whatever, but if a country in this case the US it can apply the VAT taxes for that product, the VAT taxes that are applicable in the US. A vendor from a foreign country has no right to apply the amount of VAT taxes that are applied for that product in the country of destination. Only a vendor that sells a product in a country to someone living in that country can apply VAT taxes to that product. Here the vendor is not situated in my country so he has no right to apply the taxes that are used in that other country.

I don't think this conversation needs to go any further. If you really think that Plimus (the eCommerce provider) is doing something illegal I recommend that you take it up with your legislators .

Bottom line, we think you are misinterpreting both the tax and the law.

Sam Calabrese I am a *long* time Total Commander fanatic. I'm looking at xplorer² as a possible replacement or complement. I, too, have been having issues with TC on large (3TB) HDDs. Sometimes it hangs for up to 30 seconds before completing a command and refreshing. (To be fair, I haven't worked with Christian on this yet.) xplorer² looked like it is worth a try at this price.

FWIW, I had some hitches installing xplorer² ULT 32-bit on a 64-bit Win7 Ultimate PC. I was not able to paste the activation code into the control window. The 64-bit version works fine.

Guy User @Roger, I just wanted to add that normally the VAT is charged by the country of destination and it is that country of destination that you owe that VAT too.. In this case I'm paying the VAT of the product and the amount of VAT that is applicable in my country to someone in another country. You seriously think they (Plimus) are going to pay back that amount of VAT to my country ? If the price of the product is w.o. VAT they can charge me the US VAT tax, not the one applicable to in my country. End of story 4 me.

And 4 such a small amount I'm not going to bother any legislators.

Can't even pay through PP it seems.

Steven Avery Hi,

Write directly to the vendor, and share your case, sometimes they make special post-facto arrangements. No harm trying.

Alternatively, or if that does not work, or if you want to save up for a higher grade of oatmeal for the young one, just live with the best free versions for awhile, and jump on the next special you like.

I mentioned the big 3 above, there are various free versions and various specials down the pike.

Software Guy This is a great software offering - thanks Zabkat and BitsDuJour. The pro version is best for most users as Xplorer2 features a user license. If you are considering this software, also consider the lifetime license - go here for info:

You may also want to check out the scrap container feature - here is the link:

Colin Pritchard I have version 1.8.1.2 purchased I think in 2010. If I download 2.3 to try, how much will it cost to keep it? Also if I decide to revert to 1.8.1.2 is it possible to get back to my current settings.

How about if I were to subscribe to the lifetime update plan for updating 1.8.1.2 . Would there a discount on that?

Nick Kobe I have owned xplorer 2 Pro, lifetime license, for many years. It is a GREAT program. Performs flawlessly and the license is a true USER license. It replaces MS explorer and the features for the money is equally outstanding. Buy it, install it, and never worry about the next upgrade nor its performance.

I do not work for xplorer nor do I have any business nor personal relationship with them.

Eric B Some questions...

1. If I purchase xplorer2 pro through BDJ, are minor update (2.4, 2.5, etc.) included?

2. Can the lifetime update be purchased at any time or do you have to upgrade to the latest version before you can purchase the lifetime update?

3. So the total for xplorer2 pro with lifetime update is $44.92?
xplorer2 pro: $14.97
lifetime update: $39.95
bundle discount (10.00)
==================
Total: $44.92

Thanks,

RS While I agree that xplorer pro is a good value, not so for the xplorer ultimate. I purchased ultimate version the last time it was offered on BDJ, and have received no value in spending the additional $10. There are no significant differences between the two versions, and the additional functionality that was promised hasn't been delivered. I believe there was only one update since then, and nothing exclusive and significant for xplorer ultimate. Nikos, are you working on additional items for ultimate within the update period I paid for?

Dierk Purchased X2 Ult in January, it has updated at least once, & is currently running 2.3.0.1.

Don't know whether this is the Biggest & Baddest Windows Explorer replacement, but have been pleased with the program thus far - even though I only use a fraction of its capabilities.

Feel it was well worth the $$, both in terms of actual functionality, as well as in terms of "recompense" for a stable app & encouragement toward future development.

Was a long time PowerDesk user, but xplorer2 has taken that spot.

nikos bozinis the ultimate version has much better (faster) search, so that's well worth the price difference alone

Peter S Question: Why wasn't an upgrade path to v2 Ultimate made for owners of v1 who also paid for the extra portable versions - if they haven't had the extra builds made?

Nikos Bozinis: I can't speak for other v1 portable owners, however I would happily GiVE BACK my one(1) UNUSED portable build (that you sent me at the time of purchase) & the rights for the other UN-BUiLT v1.8x Portable Build (that I HAVE already PAiD YOU FOR), if I could be allowed to have an upgrade to v2 ULTiMATE. ['edit': You got extra money from me for something I'll never ask to be built, and I'm not very happy about that!. 'close edit']

Although the v1 Portable build's are still valid and COULD be built and issued by YOU, what's the point of getting them built specifically for a licensed owner, when any version of v2 is already built to be Portable.

nikos bozinis I answered this two lines above :)
if you don't get the upgrade cover (warranty) then you will face upgrade costs sooner or later (no sooner than 1 year though). Of course you can always stick to the version you bought which is yours to keep for ever

lifetime means lifetime, so for all future versions will be free (within the product range you bought)

Cary Adams @Chris Roy Jackson... they are both top-of-the-line programs. In general XY is a bit more geekish in terms of exotic capabilities, however it is also somewhat limited as a 32-bit program, in contrast to Xplorer which has full 64-bit capability.

I'd suggest you install both trials and compare them for your personal needs.

RS Nikos, your response to my query above states that "the ultimate version has much better (faster) search" that you claim is worth the extra cost, but your reply to a question on your forum regarding xplorer2 ultimate's search function suggests otherwise; that "there are a few optimizations in place that will give marginal savings but only in very large folders. You won't find any difference for a single file" (http://netez.com/bbs/view...ate#p58727). Perhaps I am missing something, but aren't these statements contradictory?

So, I'll ask again: When will xplorer2 ultimate owners see any of the promised enhancements that would give value to buying this version?

Michael R. As a big fan of symbolic (directory) links, I am wondering, if xporer can copy directories with some links within too in this way, that for a link-directory in the source-directory an equivalent link-directory (i.e. a symbolic-link-directory, which points to the same target) is created inside the destination-dir.

Explorer and most clones when copying don't care, if the source-directory is a link: they create a real directory on the destination-side and copy the files inside the directory pointed to this link to this destnation's directory's subdir.

In some cases this might be wanted by the user, so an what-to-do option (handle as in the original/handle as director/ask the user each time) would make sense..
Feb 22 2014 at 8:27am Copy Link
0
nikos bozinis xplorer2 is aware of links but it won't create a link during copy. It will reproduce the whole directory structure at the destination.

Michael R. @nikos: Thanks for the answer.

Do you have plans to implement such an option?

If not, how is it supposed for a user to copy (or probably even move) a directory with symbolic links to another partition? By analyzing each single sub(sub)directory manually and if it is a link, create a symbolic link by himself, setting it's time-stamp manually?

Feb 22 2014 at 3:45pm Copy Link

nikos bozinis @Michael R with links things are never simple. Say you copy in a removable drive, you wouldn't want a link there, you would need the actual contents

zabkat - Feb 23 2014 at 5:54am Copy Link

Michael R. @nikos: You are right, the decision is not a simple one. In fact the user is the only one, who can decide what he wants.

As said in my first posting above:
in some cases this might be wanted by the user, so a what-to-do option:
(a) handle it as a link
(b) handle it as if it was a 'real' directory
(c) ask the user each time how to act, i.e. to choose between (a) or (b)
would make sense..

In your example, the user who would want a copy the complete contents he would choose (b) in my proposal.

Let's say, you have a directory with public information and one with private information. After having copied a subdirectory of your public-dir to an usb-stick (your way, which would be always (b) ), the user can not be sure, that there is no private information on the usb-stick. There might be a link from the public directory to a directory on the private directory. If the user would choose option (a) while copying, he can be sure.

Anyway. I am not sure, if your answer implying, that you' ll not think about allowing the user choose another option when copying dirs (like (a) and (c)) and always do it the (b)-way? Hope so not...

Dierk Have been using Xplorer2 Ult for around 15 - 16 months. Am very happy with the application, and consider the purchase price as Money Well Spent.

A few notes that might be of interest to potential buyers:
1) This is a complex application: expect to spend some time learning how to use it effectively. (After over a year, there are still functions I have never used.)

2) I have found File Manager apps to be similar to PIMs in the sense that different interfaces are more appealing / intuitive than others. I like the "look & feel" of the main Xplorer2 functions - others may prefer another file manager, but it is certainly worth your time to give this trial a shot.

3) Still, some of the more "Advanced" functions of Xplorer2 have proven difficult to grasp: see comment above regarding learning curve... (Help File is officially "OLD" - believe it is labelled for v2.1xx, whereas current app release is v2.4xx. At least it IS intended for the current Major Release - 2.Xxxx)

4) Have used Xplorer2 under Windows 7, 8 (very briefly) and now 8.1, all 64bit, and it has run reliably in each case. Visually, the appearance under Win 7/8 is distinctly different (&, IMHO, Better) than what is shown in the Screenshots on the Bits page.

After PowerDesk started to go Flaky, spent a couple of years trying a variety of File Managers (and, frankly, hoping that PowerDesk would return to form). Many of these were Free - or had Free Versions - but Xplorer2 seemed like the Best One to Spend Money On: and, Yes, would recommend it to a Friend (if reasonably computer savvy...)

Leo Levosky The Ultimate version says it has these features above the Pro version

1. Portable/Network deployment
2. Fast desktop search

What exactly does this mean? I can't find any explanation on your website!

I assume portable means that it runs from a USB stick, or without installation, but what does the Network deployment mean? Is it a network license? Does it enable me to search network file systems without mounting them as shares?

Fast desktop search can mean all things to all people! Does the program index all files or search them at runtime? What is the impact of the search function on SSD's and on networks.

nikos bozinis the most useful extra in the ultimate version is fast desktop search, see here for more information

zabkat - Feb 25 2014 at 9:52am Copy Link

Leo Levosky I have read the section you refer to but it really didn't help at all. Many people with SSD's turn off windows indexing because it causes too many writes on the SSD and Microsoft does not make it easy to move items (such as the indexes) from the C: drive to another drive. For this reason many people use other search tools which allow the user to define the location of the indexes they use. These also allow more file types to be searched. For example, some search programs will search Thunderbird emails.

It is not at all clear to me how your search works. You seem to be saying that if Windows search is too slow your search takes over, but what does it actually do?

You refer to search but the option in your product seems to be called find. I assume this is what you are referring to. The dialogue box gives an option to enter a name. Next to this is the number 100. I have no idea what this is for?

I have run the "find" option across my network to a server but I can find no definition of what this is actually doing. How is it searching the remote files? Is it reading each file line by line? What is it actually doing?

I'm sure you have implemented many useful features but I'm finding it very difficult to understand what they are or how they work. If I buy the Pro version do I get no find capability?

You didn't answer my question on what you mean by network deployment. I don't know if you missed the question or didn't understand it. My question is essentially asking if the ultimate version is a network license that allows the product to be deployed across an entire network from a single PC. In relation to search, is it storing an index of the files it then finds?

the "network deployment" is for sysadmins that want to install x2 easily to many computers. For most people it isn't a big deal. It doesn't affect the licensing

D User FREE Lifetime Upgrades Assurance - actually isn't free at all.

Depending on the version purchased, it either costs $49.95 USD or $69.95 USD

Nikos I'd like to ask you a question:

Q. Does the Lifetime Upgrades Assurance cover ALL FUTURE VERSIONs (eg: v3.x, v4.x, etc), OR, does it only cover up to the end of v2.99x?

Reason I ask was because a close relative purchased the same Lifetime Upgrades Assurance when version 1.xx was the only product available - and from what they have told me and I from the many posts I have read during the last 18 or so hours in previous posts, it (the Upgrades Assurance) ONLY covered v1.x releases. (BUT I may be incorrect as Software really is something I do not have a grasp on)

The relative in question is actually my Son - who has been hospitalised because of an accident (he was actually visiting Me in hospital at the time of Your last promotion) which has damaged his spine/spinal cord and nerves, since the time of your last promotion, as he was going to write to you about trading in his Portable versions (which as I understood, where hand built individualised efforts back then) and pay the extra to upgrade from v1.x to v2 Pro or Ultimate.

VW User I have version 2.2.0.1, and when I click the update option, it says I can upgrade to 2.5 for a 33% discount. This makes my cost $20.07. I can get 2.5 here for $14.97.

George Butel Does its search feature do the same thing as Copernic? In other words, would I be best advised to uninstall Copernic if I get this thing? I'm assuming also that it's fully compatible with Win8.1; is that correct?.

garrett james love this program. Been using for at least 10 years now. It stands its grounds with even the likes of Dopus, FileBoss, Xyplorer . One of the first i install on a new machine. In addition to already having Pro, i am buying Ultimate just to have the portable version with a few extra bells and whistles. This program is so worth it. For those who have never used a dual pane, multi tab explorer interface you will find instant gains in productivity and SANITY

@George above. Copernic is a desktop search engine, a bit different animal than x2plorer though x2 can search files as well. Why don't you just compare them on those features first.

D User Dear NiKOS,

I apologise for my email of yesterday I was looking at the FREE Lifetime Upgrades Assurance from the point of view of a mother/shopper whose only experience of software was what came installed when the computer was bought from a shop - unlike my children.

Since yesterday's email on this page I have been able to speak to both of my son's (the older one who is an xplorer² license owner who is currently in hospital, and today I also spoke to my other (younger) son and I have asked him to contact You by email as he has a fairly good knowledge about computer hardware and software and is more likely to know and understand what he's talking about. He is proably writing it as i wite this however I can't promise that he will have sent it to you or contacted you before today's offer expires, but I hope you'll allow for these unusual circumstances, which has been a real upheaval for our family.

Best wishes,

Bruce Yes I also agree, a discounted lifetime license would be very much appreciated. I currently have a license to Xplorer2 Pro (when it was the top end a number of years back), and was disappointed when they came out with Ultimate, which then took on the high-end features.

If he/they were to offer a discount on the lifetime ultimate, that would be worthwhile. And it would seem to be a sensible thing to offer, as it means a number of guaranteed sales today!
Whereas, without a discount lifetime Ultimate, he will be losing some sales.

As indicated in the Fine Print,
"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted" is not very encouraging...

Please Zabkat (Mr Zabkat? Zabkat team),
Please consider to add a discount on the lifetime purchase , for both Pro and Ultimate. You will find happy customers to buy it, and will have people liking and recommending your product more.

John Porubek Even after signing up to BitsDuJour, I don't see the discounted price when I go to buy the Ultimate version. What's up?

Never mind, answered my own question. Was using Firefox w/ uMatrix plugin. Even with uMatrix supposedly set to allow everything, it wasn't working. Tried on Chrome (w/ no protection) and it works.

By the way, I've been using xplorer2 for years (and 2xExplorer before that) and I consider it a "must have". It's probably the main thing that keeps me from switching to Linux. The support from Nikos has always been prompt and top-notch.

Similar as wdx and wlx plugins are integrated.

I do want to have x2 in a portable mode as I move around alot.
When working with x2 I would like also to be able to extract and add files into 7z,rar archives etc.

So is it possible?

And one last thing, do you have any road map of what might added in the future?

Mats Thell I will skip this even that it is intriguing.

One side not which I don't understand is:
"NOTE: customers from European Union countries will be subject to VAT." (taken from purchase page on zabkat.com )
Which should not apply as your company is in Cyprus which in turn is part of EU's VAT district.. or do I have got the information wrong?

For me as a EU citizen this will be very expensive.

Javier Gil Sunset:
A few that come to mind:
I generally find Xyplorer a little slower than Xplorer2, particularly when navigating along the directory structure (case in point, when it reaches directories with thousands of files), but nothing too dramatic. (and yes, I do have a pretty fast computer).
In the color filters , Xyplorer cannot add bold / italic. (confirmed by the programmer) and the styles option in Xyplorer in the options panel is very confusing to be honest. (In Xplorer2, you just tick a box if you want bold/italic, etc).
I like how easy it is to add comments to files in Xplorer2 and use those comments as tags. (you search files based on a word found in the comments for example, or have color filters when adding a word to the comments. Say you write "urgent", and it automatically highlights in red or whatever color you have defined)
Regarding previews, you can't have a preview pane rather than a floating pane in Xyplorer (I don't like windows which pop up).
They're both very good programs, but for me, Xplorer2 is the winner out of the two.

Bruno User frank castle says, "As someone who has bought this program 2x's now save your money and buy the lifetime insurance. It is a bargain in the long run."

This is unfortunately blatantly wrong.

I bought xyplorer2 together with lifetime insurance and lost both since immediately after my purchase, development has shifted to the prompty-introduced "Ultimate Version".

I'm very much interested in some functions of the "Ultimate Version" but my investment in the "Professional Version" is then lost at almost 100 per cent.

There is a little discount to go from Professional to Ultimate, but my "insurance" is lost in full; in order to get "insurance" for Ultimate, I will have to pay for "insurance" anew, the full price.

This is not an incentive to upgrade, and unfortunately, to Professional, I prefer freeware like Freecommander.

So my payment into xplorer2 has not brought me any advantage over freeware whatsoever.

I do not understand why the "lifetime insurance" for Professsional vesion can not get imputed at least partially to the upgrade to "Ultimate", all the more so with "Professional" not getting real (real I say, not counting Win 8, 10, whatever adjustments) development anymore.

JW Just tried to purchase the Ultimate version from this page - which says it should be $24.97.
When I go to do the ordering, it seems to be charging me the full price (which comes out as £36.66). So I guess there's no 50% discount coded in, even though this page definitely shows there's a 50% off offer on the Ultimate edition.

Any comment Nikos?
Feb 24 2016 at 10:32am Copy Link
0
Sputnik @ Bruno User

I perfectly agree with your point of view.

At the time the best edition was the "Professional" one, anybody who bought this edition must surely have tought that he would get every new "top" functionalities with the updates and upgrades of its "Pro" edition.

But Nikos did a tricky move by bringing an "Ultimate" version.

Those who will buy this "Ultimate" edition (I mean the lifetime insurance of it), will they be also tricked by a further new edition which would be called "Galactic Edition" or another still further one which would be called "Universal Edition" and so on...?

Even if there were no plan of another better edition, the Ultimate edition was really a tricky move towards the people who bought the "Pro" edition lifetime insurance.

BearPup @User1: I have used the free version as a means of checking when to buy the next upgrade. As I said in an earlier comment, I've been a paid user for the last 5 years; before that I used the free version, which easily convinced me to become a paid user.

As just one example of the difference, is how the two programs deal with search requests. In the free version, xplorer² uses Windows own search engine. In the paid version you use xplorer²'s own built-in search engine, which is more detailed and faster than Window's search engine.

For me it was a night vs. day comparison, and I've never looked back or regretted having switch from Windows to paid xplorer².

They have no diret financial interest in selling lifetime upgrade at discounted price. Otherwise you'd already see it available as it's the case for some other software. In other words, this is intentional. No hard feelings, they have the right to do this, and if you think their product is worth the price, You'll no doubts jump on the discount, and either pay for upgrade or wait for additionnal discount price for every future upgrade.

Jeffrey Taylor I currently have xplorer2 lite 3.4.0.3 (32-bit) installed in Windows 7.

If I buy the Pro edition, will I be able to download and install both 32 and 64 bit versions, or only one?

If I buy the Ultimate edition, will I be able to download and install both 32 and 64 bit versions, or only one?

Can I upgrade the currently installed 32-bit free edition to either an Ultimate or Pro version using the installers for this offer?

Can I install a 64 bit version of xplorer2 without uninstalling the 32-bit version?

Benjamin User Robert Horbury-Smith@ You're welcome!

jaco kotze@ There is no mention about how many computers you can register with one license but when you want to buy the product, you can add more licenses so I expect it's 1 PC = 1 License (Not sure about the session), but I'm not certain about it. Let's wait for the vendors' reply.

jaco kotze Many thanks for prompt response. Vendor Website refers to volume licensing, but on today's deal, they are silent pertaining 1 x pc= 1 x license. Nowadays most developers allow at least 3 x PCs per 1 x license. Will wait for the response from Vendor.

Samir Desai Does XPlorer allow me to perform recursive copy or recursive sync by traversing and comparing sub-folders and sub-sub-folders etc? Thanks
Aug 23 2017 at 10:33am Copy Link
0
nikos bozinis @Samir xplorer2 has a robust copy engine which among other things can overwrite only newer and non-existing files, which acts like a synchronization. For more information see www.zabkat.com/tour3a.htm

Samir Desai Nikos, Thanks for your quick reply.
I reviewed the web link, it seems that Xplorer2 has great options for copying, but I want to clarify my original question, and ask some more:

does Xplorer2 synchronize sub-folders (and files within the sub-folders)? if yes, how many levels of sub-folders? I want to make sure that when I synchronize, Xplorer2 can "work through" more than 1 level of sub-folders to copy or sync.

Also, can it copy locked and hidden files (such as OS boot files)?
Can it literally clone a hard drive? If yes, what are the restrictions in doing so? i.e. source and destination need to be same size or types of drives?

What are the main differences between the Pro and Ultimate versions?
Thanks again.
Aug 23 2017 at 12:26pm Copy Link
0
nikos bozinis @Samir, if you copy files like I said using "overwrite if newer else skip" copy option, then it will "synchronize" all levels down. Think that it is doing a copy but selective. As for system and other files, if xplorer2 can read them, it will copy them. You can try it yourself and see.
As for ultimate vs pro, here are the main differences:

Thanks so much.

disenchanted I have a licensing question.

The fine print says:
Each license allows installation on all owned computers, but xplorer² version 4.4! may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them.

Questions:
1. What if you do have multiple devices using xplorer2 at the SAME time?

2. Do you have a license for multiple home users?

Like a FAMILY-license, where multiple devices can have xplorer2 loaded AND in use, at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

nikos bozinis licensing is really simple, count heads, not devices, and you have the number of licenses required. There's no "family" license

Kelly Hamblin Looks like the ribbon is still optional. That's a huge plus. This is a very nice file manager. I have purchased a couple of versions. At present I'm using version 3.1.0.2. However, when I first installed this version, it was crippled. I had to contact the author to get instructions on how to make it usable. Now I have it installed on two computers, but since I've forgotten the registry fix, the app is useless on the other desktop. I am wondering if the same problem still exists.

David F Like others, I have used this for years. I don't use it all the time, because most of my stuff is not complicated. So, I just suffer and use File Explorer with an add-in called QTTabBar (or something like that). But, Nick's product is so much better. I have planned to upgrade my license, but the year of upgrade possibilities moved on. So, now, I'd have to pay full price. But, with this sale, I think I'll just upgrade and get all the updates. And, if anyone is in doubt, this is a great product. You just have to spend a little time learning all the Tips & Tricks to use it easily. But, in a week, you'll love it just like I do. Again, thanks Nick for all your hard work on this wonderful Windows Utility.
Sincerely,
David Fullerton

John User I agree. I have used this for quite a few years. I am using 4.401. There is a bit of a learning curve involved, but this program does so much. I am often finding out new things that it can do for me.

Whenever I see a trial program offered, I check it out, but I keep going back to this one. The updates are frequent and customer support is top notch.

IMO it is money well spent especially at this 50% off price.

I also want to know the following. Can the software save automatically to a .txt file for example the next ten or twenty copies of text lines that I may do in a text document? Is there such an option possible? I am just wondering if that is possible based on the statement (From clipboard to file: Dump your clipboard contents to a file.)....... in the 'FEATURES' tab of the BDJ page.

Robert Crombie I have the earlier Pro version 3.4.0.4
Does that version and/or the current version have this ability -
When using Dual Panes, I would make one pane fairly wide, and the other pane perhaps only showing one and a bit Tabs.
I would like a setting that automatically widens the narrow Pane, when I make it 'live' (get focus). The other pane now shrinks to the small width

(3) use another tab or dual pane to do the browsing while the original folder (and its selection) stays put

nikos bozinis @HJ User xplorer2 isn't a replacement for windows 10, so your concerns are not relevant. You can just run it as any other app on your system to manage your files and folders
