What are people saying about Zentimo

Mr. Yoop Just one question: On your website, you offer the same discount of 50% for customers of your other product, USB Safely Remove. Will there also be a special Bits du Jour update pricing when you already own an USB Safely Remove license? Thanks for your support! Mr. Yoop

Louis H @Hazen...

I've been using the beta with Win 7 Professional 64 bit and have had no problems with it. It has handled everything I've thrown at it. And it is my understanding that the full release version is far more stable than the beta is.

I've only been waiting for this offer to upgrade to the full version.

Igor Tkachenko @Hazen Hoffpauir: Yes, it works with Windows 7 both 32 and 64 versions. @Marjus J: The listed above price is for one year upgrdes. The discount is also eligible for two year upgrades which will cost $22.5 USD.

DrTeeth I am sooo going to register this. Within 5 mins of starting the trial I'm enthralled.

A tad expensive (even with the offer) for what it is but the fact that it is licensed per user and not PC makes the sale...even when the EU adds the extortionate sales tax.

Up Allnyte I decided to give this software a spin since I have 5 exteral drives along with those many "removable drives" for various camera flash drives, etc. I'm running Windows 7 Home Pro and have recently installed IE Beta. I downloaded Zentimo with IE9, but when I went to tell it to install I got a message that said that the program was unsafe. No explainations. It just refused to install Zentimo. Any idea what would cause this? From what I can tell it was only IE9 blocking this (after download), not any of my other security programs.

Igor Tkachenko @Iva: It seems like it's a bug in IE9 beta, since all other browsers can download it and install well. Moreover the program signed with a certificate and all tests at http://www.virustotal.com...1286350071  shows that the program is clean. Can you try to download the program with another browser, e.g. http://www.google.com/chrome/ or http://www.mozilla.com/ ?

Just a clarification question : should USBSafelyRemove be ... removed before installing Zentimo ?
Thanks.
Oct 5 2010 at 10:37pm Copy Link

DrTeeth "USBSafelyRemove" does not need to be removed during install. There is an interface option to replace it with Zentimo anyway.

Installed trial last night on Win7 32 bit.

Michael R. Just installed the trial-version: Looks nice and I like this 1 user - many installations policy.

And I found out an interesting thing: The cam, which is integrated inside my laptop, is a hidden usb2-device. I tried to deactivate it and (after a few questions) it works fine (and also the reactivation).

But after deactivation and a reboot the camera was again activated.

Such an integreated cam is a good, but also kind of dangerous thing: You never know when it is used.

So, is there a way to deactivate the cam automatically, of course without giving up the possibility to activate it, when it really should be used.

Igor Tkachenko @Vanessa: In short: Zentimo is an advanced version of USB Safely Remove. It has over USB Safely Remove the next features: strong TrueCrypt support, quick launch menu for portable applications, more informative device menu, drive speed test and portable settings. Read more http://safelyremove.com/b...-1-0-final . If you don't need all these additional features the right choice for you is to stay with USB Safely Remove. We will continue developing both applications and we added another application just to reach 2 goals: give some additional features that are needed by a half of our users and keep USB Safely Remove simple which is main feature request of another half of our users :) @Michael R: It's a good idea and we will consider adding this feature in one of the following versions.

Jim Maioriello @ Igor,  I like this software and have purchased a 2 year license and am looking forward to the new features as they become available.  In the beginning, I had a mixed feeling about purchasing the product because I detected some unstablility.  Please let me explain.  I have been playing around with the release version and the beta version for a few days now.  I have Zentimo installed on 2 laptops.  The first one is my test machine and it's working fine.  However, on my main pc, it crashes when I right click on the menu for an unrecognized device.  I suspected this may be due to the fact that I used a wireless LogiTech LX 710 keyboard on my main laptop, and I noticed Zentimo does not recognize this particular USB device). Anyway, I unchecked the "Display surprise removal device" and the unrecognized device disappeared from my menu, and more importantly, this made it impossible for me to crash Zentimo.  My question, is why do you have that option enabled by default?  Is there a reason for this?  If so, I would like to know what it is. Because from my perspective, I think the default behavior should be to ignore "surprise removal devices"  for the simple reason they are safe to remove to begin with.  No need to use a program to manage that.  I would think if this was unchecked to begin with, I would not have experienced the crashes in the first place.

Igor Tkachenko @Guy: Thanks, I've already respond to you. @Jim Maioriello: Could you download the latest beta ( http://zentimo.com/downlo...=1-1-beta2 , it's not released yet), play with it on your main pc and if it goes crashing send us the report from the program (In order to send the report you should proceed to "Main menu -> Help -> Report a bug", and in the opened dialog enter your e-mail and a short description of the problem. This helps us to investigate the problem more detailed)

Jim Maioriello @Igor.  Beta2 solved the problem.  Thanks!  @ Guy, I had an experience using Plimus where a purchase I made failed to authenticate. I was told by them that my credit card was was not charged, and I should resubmit my order if I wanted to purchase the software.  I did so and was surprised when I reviewed my credit card bill that I was charged twice.  In their defense, they did credit my account, but it took a few days of emailing back and forth to get the issue resolved.

Up Allnyte Igor asked: "Can you try to download the program with another browser, e.g. Google Chrome or Firefox?"

Thank you for responding - I'll download Chrome and see how it works. I was pretty sure that it may have something to do with the Beta IE since no one posting here has had any install troubles. Thank you!.

Igor Tkachenko @Michael R: Yes, I thought exactly about this more common feature. Feel free to contact us if you have any further suggestions. @Iva Question: Good. Hope you didn't miss the deal. To anyone: the deal has ended now, guys thanks for your interest in our software!

Up Allnyte Thank you, Igor, but I'm afraid that I did miss the deal. But not because I didn't try. I thought that you should know why I missed. I installed Chrome as you suggested to download the program with since IE9 beta was calling it a security risk. Unfortunetly, the exact same thing happened with Google. But with Chrome I was able to instruct it to override the security qualms and begin to install the program . Right-clicking on the download allowed me to select "Run anyway" or something similar. Incredibly, I recieved the same results with both IE9b & Chrome when overiding the security warning: Zentimo begins the set-up routine and begin to install. Installation gets to this point: C:\Program Files\Zentimo\ZentimoService.exe and stops - the pop-up says that it can no longer read and that the file is corrupt. If I try to restart w/o another download it won't begin install - it just announces that the program is corrupt. Any ideas?

F.J. Garvin Every now and then a utility comes along that is practical, solves a lot of problems and just works. This is one of them. Its worth the full price so with the BitsDuJour deal, its a no brainer. It has a very liberal license as well. Use it on all of your computers.

Software Guy Very useful if you juggle a number of external drives. This software is complimentary to disk catalog software such as supercat by no-nonsense-software.com. With this combination, you know exactly what files are on what drives and zentimo lets you connect/disconnect and map the drives as you need them.

RichU I am currently using this program and have been using it for a while. Every once in a while, I used to have problems with a USB flash drive losing data in Windows. Less frequently I would have similar problems with a portable USB hard drive. Since I installed Zentimo, I have had zero problems in this area. I highly recommend this program. IMHO, It makes for easy handling of USB drives.

Igor Tkachenko Hi Interested User,
Actually you can use the program for life. One or two year is duration of subscription for upgrades. After the subscription is over you can stay with the latest version as long as you wish and pay for upgrades only when you need a feature

I kinda thought that, but still I don't like the idea of a yearly subscription model for updates. I do understand you need to make income somehow though.

What would the prices be after my sub is up to continue receving updates? IE: 'what discounts would we get'

I looked at the link you provided. If I understand correctly, you buy the license, use it forever on any number of computers you own, and only extend in a year where there is a feature you believe you need.

So, for example, when Windows 8 (hahahahaha) comes out one day real soon now tm, one might wish to upgrade in order to take advantage of some new features or to avoid something that is broken. But in the meantime, one could, if one wishes, simply continue with the version one originally licensed, upgraded during one's initial upgrade period.

Correct?

Can you retrieve a copy of my order and email me a receipt or the like, so that I can print it and mail in the payment?

The order was placed within the last 5 minutes or so.

Thank you kindly!

Carl Lum Zentimo is a godsend--especially if you use SyncToy across several external hard drives. Without Zentimo, Windows constantly assigns different drive letters and then you have to manually change them--and that drove me crazy. Zentimo should have been part of Windows.

Frank Stephens Carl Lum, SyncToy 2.1 has been out for years, and way back at 2.0 it was changed to automatically handle drive letter reassignments. Further, Windows 7 automatically handles drive letter reassignments within Windows itself (but it can't do anything for non-Microsoft applications).

SoftCollector Zentimo came in as a successor to USB Safely Remove, which had been sold with the lifetime upgrade for years. At a certain point they just decided to switch to another application (leaving former customers wondering). USB Safely Remove has not been discontinued, but it is not getting developed with new features, while Zentimo (running with yearly licenses) is.

Zentimo could have easily been the next version of a product bought with the lifetime upgrade (which it essentially is), but instead it was marketed as sth completely different and new. Developments like that make former customers feel duped. A more customer-sensitive approach would have been to start selling USB SR with yearly licenses and keep the deal for loyal customers intact, offering them new features with new versions.

I have a sneaking suspicion that USB SR will simply be discontinued once Zenitmo gets a wide enough fan base. The forum of USB SR looks dead with customer questions left unanswered.

That said, both USB SR and Zentimo are great at what they do, namely: disconnecting safely external drives - and they do it in style. At the quoted price Zentimo is a steal. I wish more people would buy it.

I wish Crystal Rich all the best and hope they will stay in business and continue to offer a top-notch service. Please, do not forget your loyal customers either.

Kind Regards,
SC

While some people wish to have an all-in-one solution like Zentimo that allows to fully manage their external drives others just need to improve safe removal tool in Windows and USB Safely Remove fully satisfies their needs.

Also we have never stopped to develop both of the products - we release new versions for both of them almost simultaneously - you can see this in the blogs of the programs. At the moment we are in development of the new major version of Zentimo & USB SR so we sometimes may not answer questions on our forum in time, I'm sorry for this. However we try to reply as soon as possible on support requests from our site or by email.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

The policy for Zentimo says: "Free upgrades for 12 months". That does include major upgrades, yes?

Kind Regards,

H. H. Hallo
as a upurchaser of the first released product (usb safely remove, also offered at bdj) and use of the zentimo - giveaway version from 2010 I really recommend buying: The tool is one of the "must have" tools , making handling of removable devices much more comortable and fast - and at this low price and user-friendly policy I´ll buy it to update my older giveaway- version. Thank you for offering it at bdj
with knd regards

Carl Lum @Frank Stephens: Yes, I am using SyncToy 2.1 and yes it does handle drive letter changes--but only up to a point. It's great at detecting changes to a drive letter of a single external drive that that you plug in. But things get dicey if you plug in multiple externals and the drive letters are different. I am trying to SyncToy between two *external* drives and I've discovered SyncToy will get confused very easily in this case if the drive letters jump around. And the results can be disastrous.

When we release the new version we usually notify our user through the program and by email. Perhaps you unsubscribed from both of the notification ways therefore you are not aware of the new version.

In order to update just download the installer from our web-site: http://zentimo.com/download.htm and run the installer. You do not need to uninstall the previous version.

Paul Michieux I was interested in this program because I have two USB disk drives permanently connected to my PC and would like to be able to turn them off when they're not in use, which is most of the time as they're only used for backing up the data that are on the PC's internal drives.

I know it's easy to simply unplug the drives -- they're plugged into power sockets like any other electrical device, but can this program turn off the power to these drives, even though they're still plugged in, and still connected via USB to the main PC?

I'd be interested to know.

Regards,

Michieux

K X @Jason Howard

If you click to buy, there's a lifetime license option as well as the 1 year license.

The strange thing on the Crystal Rich website is that the Zentimo lifetime license is not available as an option to existing owners of Zenimo if you click on upgrade, only if you're buying a new license of it, or if you are have a license for USB Safely Remove.

So if you're interested in a Zentimo lifetime license, discounted, buy it here on Bits today.

Tortuga Hello
I first bought USB S.Remove waaay back when, which was a Family/Lifetime license.
Then Zentimo was created, and I bought that too
The license changed to an yearly subscription, but still was a family license.
Well ok, I understand the need to create revenue, and I'm glad to support this fine developer

Been renewing ever since.
Even bought licenses as birthday gifts for friends, who foolishly just yanked HDDs' external cords willy nilly, like it was "normal procedure" *gasp*

Was gladly going to buy a couple of Lifetime Licenses when I chanced upon the new terms :(
Appears the licensing has changed yet again ??!!
It is now «Per User» instead of a Family License!!
Huh?? ... REALLY??? Why the change??!!
Is it really justified that a family w interchangeable computers buys one license per adult, plus one per kid, plus per guests, plus ...
Sorry, I have been an early adopter & I champion your products any chance I get.
But this change ... I'm not liking it one bit !!
Hummm, NOT at ALL sure I'll keep buying it. My enthusiasm level took a nose dive!

»» Other thoughts
My previous rant does not diminish the fact this is a really fine & useful program
One of the first things I install, as I have an inordinate qty of bays, externals & peripherals, so, hard to cope without it.
Plus I need the 'fixed letters' feature for my back programs to function properly, when moving hard drives back & forth from PC to Laptop ...
It is a great help to manage & keep your data safe!!

Peace

Chris Roy Jackson Genie au Travail Hello,
The Current Version is 1.6.3.1219
Given that the Current Version on April 6 (almost 5 months ago) was Version 1.5.2.1199 , I think we can assume that progression to the next MAJOR version (i.e. 2.0) is SOME Time away (perhaps 1½ to 2 years "down the road").
I hope that helps,
Sincerely,

Avi S Excellent product! I bought it on BDJ last year. Well worth the money - makes my computer easier to use every day! Just being able to hit a hotkey to safe remove - instead of searching for the Safe Remove icon in the tray - saves tons of time. And then, Zentimo tells me which programs are holding handles to the drive (as opposed to the Windows Safe Remove, which just says that the drive is in use and keeps you guessing).

@Tortuga:
First of all thanks for the nice response on the program functions.

Next, the license for both USB Safely Remove & Zentimo was always personal (there are also commercial per-seat licenses), which means you can use this license personally on each of your computers but we never had a family license, perhaps you mixed that up with another software license. Also if you take a look at your old license text (the email we sent you with the license key) you will find the mentioned condition there.

@Avi S, F.J. Garvin: Thanks for the kind reviews!

Hello,
It's great to support the Author, but you know the license is a Personal (per USER) license and you are allowed to install it on ALL of your personally used Computers.
Maybe you can give the second license to your best friend (or someone else??). It will make a nice gift for anyone who appreciates their computer and uses external devices.
It is one of the best Software Investments I have ever made.

bvssunnydale Hi, (1) for security I don't use TrueCrypt but do use FolderLock. Can Zentimo be used to manage FolderLock in a similar way? Actually if it just could call up the FolderLock executable that would be sufficient. (2) Also, just to confirm, since this is registered "by user" I should be able to use it on my multiple computers (I have three, it changes all the time) without violating the license, correct?

Tortuga @Igor Tkachenko - Hi again,

I forgot to mention earlier, that I have 2x HP TP {TouchPad} w webOS, no Preware, no mods!
And every time (yes, I do mean EVERY time) I plug them to my PCs or Laptops, I can «not» unplug them, which was quite puzzling in the beginning

After quite a bit of search, found mentioned on a forum where such things are discussed, that others w Zentimo installed also have the same problem w HP TP

Been trying out other programs lately, to see if I can find an alternative, hoping in the meantime you will find a solution

Do you have any info on this, have you had reports abt this?
Can you help resolve it?

J S I have one problem with this program:

With Zentimo set to "Run on Windows Start" and with no other programs open - such as word processors or office applications, browsers etc, AND with no programs showing in the "Task Bar" area.

Next open the ctrl+alt+dlte Windows Task Manager, and in the "Applications" Tab/Window, Zentimo is shown as "Working" even if there are no USB or Memory cards being Actively controlled by Zentimo..

Question: Is it possible to alter the settings manually (or, make alterations to the actual program for future releases) so that Zentimo no longer appears in the Applications Window unless Zentimo is actually ACTiVELY controlling a USB product?

[Note: I can only be certain this happens with Win XP SP3 or Win Vista SP2, as I do not have Windows 7 or Windows 8 on any computers.]

- - - - -

Having said that, with just this one exception, I have found ZENTiMO to be the best USB (eSATA, Fireware etc) controlling tool, and now that LiFETIME Licenses available again there should be no reason why everyone wouldn't find it truly useful.

Zentimo is informing that the drive letter is mounted when it finds that a drive that has no drive letter assigned was assigned with a drive letter.

I've personally never mentioned this behavior when logging in to the Windows, perhaps you have installed some tricky antivirus or drive encription tool which caused this. Anyway if it bothers you feel free contact us via the support form: http://zentimo.com/support.htm

I would be happy to buy a Zentimo Personal License, Lifetime Upgrades at the $29.95 (or perhaps at a further disdcount if possible) to support the development of the software. However, will Zentimo remain as Zentimo, or will version 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 etc change to a different product altogether requiring a new license? I would really like any lifetime license I purchase to be a lifetime license!!!

Let me make some clarifications. You purchased Zentimo back in 2011, when the latest stable version was 1.2 and you got all upgrades until v.1.6 including the major 1.5 release.

Of course you can purchase the license with lifetime upgrades for Zentimo, today it presents on BitsDuJour for $29.95 USD.

We wil not promise anything, we can only show some facts: at the moment we have USB Safely Remove that is supported for more than 6 years since 2007, and Zentimo which is supported for 3 years since 2010.

As a 'USBSafelyRemove lifetime' owner I especially would like to have Zentimo's TrueCrypt ability. And so I probably would buy 'Zentimo lifetime upgrade' if the today's discount would apply to it too (, perhaps even if the 30% discount on the webiste would be usable also for the upgrades). But unfortunately I would have to pay about 30$, either today for the full version here or later as upgrade on your site. Of course no, if user purchased the license with the lifetime upgrades he\she will get all future upgrades for the product for free. But you should understand that the "lifetime" upgrades will be during the life span of the program, not during all your life or ours. Here as I said we cannot promise you anything, since it depends on current technogies and how much the program is in demand by users.

Chris Roy Jackson Igor, I was finally able to get my Lifetime License today. I now know why I had the problem and what the solution is (as proven by today's successful purchase). I will explain it here at around 10 pm if I return home by then. If not, I'll comment here again before Noon tomorrow (in cased there's anyone else having the same problem).

I've been using Zentimo for about 1½ years now and I must say that I have been VERY happy with the softwarenad the quick reply to problems found.
Thanks again, Igor !!!

Carsten Mads FYI - I’ve purchased this days promotion of Zentimo (2 pcs. Personal License, Lifetime Upg. at $74.88 incl. VAT).
Within two minutes, I’ve got two e-mails from Crystal Rich – first one confirming my order, second one saying I will receive a third e-mail within several minutes, with download link and License Key. This was now over one hour ago and still - no License Key e-mail in my mail box (nor in my Spam box).

Meanwhile, downloaded the Trial and this version looks a lot nicer, than the one I’ve tested some two/tree years ago. Hope I will soon receive my License Keys :-/

Bedtime for me… go happy.

Michael R. >> However if you purchased after Dec 2011 ...
Unfortunately it was 12/2009...

Would it be possible to transfer my USBSafelyRemove-license to another person, when buying Zentimo?

The Zentimo-QuickLauncher Menus are stored on the usb-stick itself, right?

So when being on a computer of another person, I can stick in the usb-stick and could run a batch-file on it, which would run zentimo on this computer and it would be able to reassign-drives to certain letters and open a popup-menu with can show configured applications.
And because it's portable, after removing the usb-stick, there keeps nothing left on this other persons's computer (except the files I change with my external programs on the usb-stick).
Right?

Igor Tkachenko To Paul Guy, John Cook, webdancer: Thanks a lot for your nice words!

To Chris Roy Jackson: Thank you too for your support and I apologize for the conveniences you had on previous purchase attempts. Perhaps now you were successful because we changed the payment registrar.

To Carsten Mads:
>> Hope I will soon receive my License Keys
We have recieved your purchase successfully and moreover sent you the license key without problems. If you still not receive the license please contact us from the support form: http://zentimo.com/support.htm and send us an alternative email, perhaps your current email server rejects messages for unknown reason.

To Michael R.:
>> Would it be possible to transfer my USBSafelyRemove-license to another person, when buying Zentimo?
I don't think so, we usually can transfer only newly purchased license, but not those that are used one.

>> And because it's portable, after removing the usb-stick, there keeps nothing left on this other persons's computer (except the files I change with my external programs on the usb-stick).
Right?
Zentimo can store the drive's settings on this drive, which allows to have the same settings on the different computers (e.g. the same device icon or the same list of the quick launch programs), but Zentimo must be already installed on all these computers.

Carsten Mads @ Igor Tkachenko - Thank you for your reply (Sorry for my - this - little late two questions, regarding my purchase… and this – maybe a little bit too long text :-)

I received the License Key e-mail, just short after my post on BDJ. But it only contains; 1 license Key and I’ve purchased 2 pcs Personal License, Lifetime Upgrade – hmmm… Maybe I didn’t’ had to buy 2 pcs then??

The reason I bought 2 pcs is, that my family is using up to 5 laptops, in a mix over two different in house Routers, with of course, two different IP addresses. We use this setup be course of better WiFi Signal Range in our house. And I don’t know, if Zentimo locks its licenses to the PC hardware and IP address locations – just wanted to be sure, not to violence any EULA (witch I didn’t had the time to read for the time being).

Please tell me, if this is okay… PS. I didn’t register the “only one Key”, which I’ve got from you (still using the Trial version, from yesterday) until further…

Another question is about Zentimo in general: Is it possible that Zentimo in any way, could maybe slow down the read/write performance with a Super High Speed USB connected Drive?

The reason why I ask is this Benchmark, witch I did with my Seagate Backup Plus 4TB Drive, both before and after my Zentimo Trial installation.
The Benchmark shows that the Drive performs up to 512MB/sec writes and 452MB/sec reads, before I installed Zentimo – please see my Screenshot links (sorry for the Screenshots being in Danish language – but it pretty much shows anyway); USB 3.0 Disk performance, before installing Zentimo scenery: http://imageshack.us/phot...cebef.png/

Next you see the Disk performance, after I installed Zentimo - Screenshot link; USB 3.0 Disk performance, after Zentimo installation scenery (now it shows under half the speed before my Zentimo install??): http://imageshack.us/phot...ceaft.png/

Last you see the Disk performance in Zentimo Drive Speed Test Tool, witch coms out a little slower than the former test - Screenshot link; USB 3.0 Disk performance, with Zentimo Drive Speed Test: http://imageshack.us/phot...cezen.png/

I’m not quite sure what’s going on here? I really like (among other things) the much more secure way, that Zentimo handles disconnecting USB Drives (last month I lost the Master Fat Table, of my late 2TB USB 3.0 Backup Disk, be course of Window 7’ sloppy USB connection facility).

Please tell me, if Zentimo has/using some kind of USB Drivers that eventually could conflict with my USB 3.0 Drivers. My system is Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 8 Pro in multi Boot, on an ASUS G75VW Laptop which has its own specific Intel USB 3.0 Chip Set Drivers.

Thank you very much, in advance…

Frank Stephens Carsten Mads, anywhere near a 512 MB/sec transfer rate is a completely meaningless number. Your disk drive isn't that fast, period. I don't know what your benchmark program is showing, perhaps the Windows caching speed. Zentimo isn't slowing you down.

Carsten Mads Thank you for your comment Mr. Stephens (I can see that this thread is not dead yet, even though the offer has ended :-)

JMJ Squared @Jan-Christoph Ihrens -- Both Personal-One-Year and Lifetime-Upgrades links work fine for me with IE10 and Chrome.

Great Product, by the way, that I've used for three years. Solid, stable performance (NEVER crashed or froze); minimal resource usages ~ 6MB Private Set Memory; very useful config options and, best of all, besides informing your OS of removal/insertion really does protect data by powering down devices with one-click removal.

JMJ Squared @Joe @John - Take a read here: http://zentimo.com/features.htm
One real advantage of using this Program is that it powers off a USB device after stopping it and informs you that it is, indeed, powered off.

Another is if you use a card reader. Zentimo can selectively eject individual cards as opposed to having to stop the entire reader.

It has a bunch of other options; e.g., the ability permanently to assign a Drive Letter/Icon to a device and store that info in an .ini file on that device. Very handy.

webdancer Truly a "must, must have"! Been using it for years.

@Joe, @John (and anyone else who doesn't understand the value of this offering), Zentimo does what the OS *should* do.

Here are some of the features I use...

Brilliant TrueCrypt support.

The ability to disable autorun/autoplay and selectively allow specific apps, on specific devices to run upon connection, e.g., a MagicJack.

Being able to stop a device but leave it physically connected so that one can *return* the device without unplugging and replugging (great when using unstable systems, stop external drives when they're not being actively used so that random reboots don't cause damage, easily return them when they're needed).

Managing individual slots on a card reader.

Fixing specific drive letters to specific devices (for backups or other automated scripts).

Being able to see the process(es) preventing a device from stopping.

All this, and more, is in the "features" section of the vendor's website. Do yourself a favour at get this little gem.

Bob Levy I have used in the past but not sure if it is worth paying for,
My major requirement would be for the product to create a list of all the files on the device and save on the computer. That way I could determine what file exists on which device without having to mount each of my USB drives. I have way to many drives.

Jan 22 2014 at 8:10am Copy Link

Hawkeye Bob, I would assume, what you are asking for would be beyond the scope of what the programs was designed for, meaning copying the files to your hard drive for you, really?

There ia already a feature that will allow you to run a program, such as Windows Explorer, when each drive is inserted so you can view the files. It has similar features for the following,

1. After Device Plugging
2. Before Deice Stopping
3. After Device Stopping
4. After Device Removing.

You can even use fixed drive letters for certain devices. I would assume, the reason we haven't seen any updates, because most of the options are already there. There is many features that MS shoud have implemented, but didn't.

I had requested, that the recycle bin, could be turned off for the USB devices, since Windows 7 has individuall settings for each drive and nothing globally, like XP. I used a setting in the Group Policy to force the recycle bin off, for all the drives. That's my preference.

This is must have utility, especially if you have a number of flash or USB drives, It even works with most SATA controllers for hot swapping SATA and eSATA drives. I have both connected. Look through the options settings and see what can be changed, you will be surprised.

The lifetime license is definately worth the price, I am just a well satisfied user.

Hope this helps.

Hawkeye I'm reposting this since my last post was truncated and you can't get to the last half. Bob, see the info about Cathy, below. It should work for what you need.

------------

Bob, I originally misread your post. I see you said, flielists, instead of the copying the file. Sorry about that.

You could enhance what DRTeeth suggested, and create a script that would be used, whenever a drive is inserted.

With the above, if two or three options could be made available, when inserting a drive, each would be setup once and I would assume, only could be active at a time. An example, most of the time, either turned off or use Windows Explorer. Quickly select if you need the script to create the filelist, without adding the script by path and name each time.

Just remembered another option. download Cathy, http://www.mtg.sk/rva/, to create the filelists and it is searchable across all the files. It also has a command line version to update the files, as needed, from a script. Works great.

peter schleifer 1)

Hawkeye, thank you for valuable advice.

2)

This being said, I challenge your claim that the "lifetime" is worth 40 bucks, since:

"Jerzy Rynio - Is it possible to get 67% discount valid for USB Safely Remove customers (10$ instead of 29.95$)? I have USB Safely Remove - lifetime upgrades."

Because that's the problem with such things. You first buy lifetime upgrades to prog 1, then the developer recognizes he doesn't make enough money out of it, then he stalls development of prog 1, just to include its functionality in prog 2, and a little more, or even much more, over time, no matter.

Those who will have bought prog 1 together with lifetime upgrades are ... (can't mention the term which applies here).

So, since this developer did exactly do this once, why shouldn't he do it a second time? And this fact puts into perspective your claim that it's in the interest of buyers to pay 3 times more to obtain lifetime upgrades.

And even in general, after my having bought xplorer2 "Prof." "lifetime", the developer quickly introduced an "Ultimate" version (for which I then not only would have had to buy the "upgrade" (ok), but also the full price for another "lifetime assurance" (= totally unacceptable since that would have meant that that same assurance for "Prof.", bought only some weeks before, would have been lost in its entirety).

I call this experience with xplorer2 a "lesson" I got re "lifetime assurances", and other buyers might profit from this lesson, without paying so much for it, by considering my experience.

3)

Above, there are posts that indicate that today, for 10 bucks, you only get a 1-year LICENCE, and not, as I had assumed, a perpetual license but with only 1-year upgrades.

Could somebody "official" (developer, bits) confirm which alternative applies here? If it's the latter, the 10-bucks offering here might indeed be a very correct one, but only in that case, certainly not if the USE of this program costs 10 bucks for one year.

4)

To bits: Would it be possible to have the "Email Me Updates" box UN-checked by default? Many a times I forget to uncheck it manually, just to then have to delete a dozen unwanted new mails in my inbox. Thank you for considering.

This feature is planned for the future versions.

Not sure I understand your question correct. The current promo comes as is for everyone (for users of USB Safely Remove and those who never heard of it) so if you wish you can opt in it.

@dylan c
>->$40 on promo is WAY too much for a program that is updated every 2 or 3 yrs, especially for those of us who already have that much invested in expired one year licenses.
That's not correct, first the basic one-year license for this promo costs $9.9USD, next we updated the program much frequently. Also pay your attention that even your "expired" license with one year subscription allows you using the latest version of the software. If it's working fine on your computer and do what's promised what else do you need? :)

@Tomas Barth

Tomas, I apologize for the inconveniences you have. Unfortunately it's a bit hard to check manually this part of the payment process since we are located outside the Europe and don't have a VAT number. Doug Atkinson Lifetime licenses are for the lifetime of the product - I once bought a "lifetime watch" and when I sent it in for a battery replacement, they sent back an inferior watch. Lifetime licenses are great for us, but not a very good model for developers. However, I do appreciate lifetime USE, that lets me stay on an older version without having to upgrade if I don't need the new features.

Also, the idea to copy a catalog of attached drives certainly seems beyond the normal use for something like Zemanta, as there are plenty of drive catalog programs out there. I use the excellent Whereisit (www.whereisit-soft.com/) for that purpose.

Hawkeye @ Peter Schiefer, @ Bob Levy - see a new link below

To answer your question on the lifetime upgrade. First of all, as a user, you don't know what would be or could added at alter your expiration date. I find it a convenience, not have to worry about the expiration when the current version expires. Plus at the same time, when I find software that I really like and it works well, I have no problem with a lifetime, to support the author.

Yes, I purchased the USB Safely Remove prior to Zentimo. I did not buy the lifetime version of it. I did get an upgrade price to Zentimo. Because of a bug, I don't recall, what that was now, an update was posted, that was for everyone, regardless of the expiration date. When an upgrade did become available, that's when I opted for the lifetime.

Yes, I totally agree with your frustration with Explore2 and I have to admit this could be seen as a similar occurrence. If another program would be published, with enhanced features, I would feel the same and probably not upgrade. I feel that practice is unethical and milking the loyal users of the previous versions is just plain wrong. I'm sure this one type of publicity, no one would want to encounter.

My opinion, yes the program has not been upgraded in awhile. I listed some of the features in a previous post, that were important to me, plus the issue with the recycle bin, that I had, which I found a workaround.

My challenge to you and the others that might be interested in the features of Zentimo, go ahead and install it. Look at every possible feature that it has to offer and post a message, if you see something that you don't see but would like it to be added. I'm sure it will be taken into consideration, if it is something a majority users could use.

@ Bob Levy, I had posted a link directly to the site for the Cathy database, a disk cataloging tool. This link, below, will show the actual user's comments for that database. It will read any drive and can also be scripted to update any particular drive in the database. You can search the database when the drives are offline. The database, actually consists of separate files for each drive. This works great with Windows 7, SP1, x64. The reason, why I included this, that the program is standalone and I feel that adding something like this to Zentimo, would bloat the requirements and require more memory at runtime, unless it could be added as an add-on. Keep in mind, this is for searching filenames only, wild card characters can be used and no content of the actual files are searchable. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/cathy.html

The above, are my opinions only. If anyone has any questions, let me know.

Thanks,

Personal license allows you using the program on your working PC as well (actually on as many PCs as you wish, the only restriction is that you are the only person who uses the program).

The commercial licenses that are now not on the promo are required only if you wish to install the program on several workplaces, ie to tie the program to several computers in contrast to a personal license which is tied to a specific person.

However if anyone wishe to purchase a number of commercial licenses feel free to purchase the required number of personal licenses (you can specify this number when purchasing) and then contact us, we will change the type of the license to the required one.

There's a "Continue" (not Accept) button in PayPay that redirects to Fastspring page where you can enter your EU vat id (hover the cursor over vat info at top left on PayPal page). Then you can accept the transaction. I'm in EU with valid vat id, this procedure works fine although it looks weird. And the amount withdrawn does not include vat.

I think I have the same question as Jerzy Rynio (Is it possible to get 67% discount valid for USB Safely Remove customers (10$ instead of 29.95$)?), so I will refrase it.

Normally, as an USB Safely Remove user, you have a discount of 50%.
So a license with lifetime upgrades (normally $59.90) costs $29,95.

As an USB Safely Remove user, can you also have this 50% discount on the price listed here ($39,90), therefore $19,95?

This possibility isn't listed, but without it an USB Safely Remove user will pay more with this deal than on the normal discount.

I totally agree it's our fault, we should add an additional flag (or maybe two more, for Australia and NZ) to a program in future versions :)

@Arnold Koningen:
The current offer is a "promo" which means that we are here at BitsDuJour offering some of our licenses at a reduced price in order to attract some new users. It doesn't mean that from now we are reducing all our prices or something else. We just cannot offer an equal discount to everyone for every case in this small todays offer. If you are a USB Safely Remove user and find this offer appropriate for you (e.g. in case of one-year licenses which cost less with this offer) feel free to get in, however you are also welcome to use a special discount listed for you on Zentimo's web-site. Or you can wait and from time to time we have special discounts in our newsletters for your case.

I spent a lot of time creating photo icons for all my thumb drives, only to find that they were only active on the one computer...
It would be much easer if, like the config file that is stored on every drive, if the small icon could be stored on it also.

Norma H This is a great little program. I have been using Zentimo Version 1.4 for some time now and love it. Just click on the icon in your sys tray and you will see a customizable icon for any USB drive connected. You can disconnect by choosing the downward pointing icon for that drive.
Another feature I like about Zentimo is that, when you insert a USB drive or, if you accidentally disconnect the wrong one, you can just click on the upward pointing arrow to easily open the drive.

Tortuga I have been a long time user of Zentimo, USB Safely Remove before that, so al in all, 6+ years.
Always love it, recommended it, even bought it for friends as a gifts.

But lately, Zentimo doesn't help at all !! :(
Can never disconnect my externals, even when I kill the processes it shows as the culprits, via Task Mngr.
In the end, always need to shut down the PCs or Laptops, in order to disconnect.

Plus, can't even change the drive icon, *always* get the message:
"Zentimo encountered a technical error. We are sorry for the inconvenience"
I've sent bug reports since the trouble started, but ...

Was hoping a newer version was able to resolve this, but I see the last one is from March.2014, which I'm using.

Hawkeye Like Ttoruga, I have been using Zentimo and before that USB Safely Remove. I'm running Windows 7, x64. I'm a very happy user. Last time I upgraded, I purchased the Lifetime license, It's cheaper if you plan on using for a long time.

Yes I have experienced the issue, when the drives couldn't be released. The issue is NOT Zentimo. You have another process that is attached to the drive. In my case it was the backup software. If I shut down the backup software and then release the drive, it works.

You will need to see what other software is attching to your drive, if they can't be released.

If you download the Microsoft Process Explorer, it will help to tell you what is holding the drive.

http://technet.microsoft....s/bb896653

Run Process Explorer, then click on Find in the tool bar or press Ctrl+F. Input the drive letter in question, c:\ or d:\ and click on search. You will have to determine which one is the culprit. Like I said, mine was the backup software.

I'm sure Igor will chime in on this as well.

Hope this helps.

VLM Charles Hall - I believe Hawkeye has already responded as well as I ever could. It's a cardinal rule of data safety/protection that you don't rip out devices while files on them remain open. The problem is that some applications close without releasing their hold on certain files, or maintain a hold long after they should have released it. Microsoft Absurd often does the former, and Hawkeye's backup software instance exemplifies the latter. IN the case of Microsoft Absurd, you can just go in and remove the little file that begins with a tilde (~) if the file is no longer actually open. (Means that MS "forgot" to remove this little gem. I think it's a tilde.) In other cases, you may have to shut down the "offending" application. Either way, Zentimo is actually serving you well by, in effect, notifying you that you have some form of unfinished business WRT that device.

Does this help?

Louis H As another long time user of this software, I will confirm that both Hawkeye and VLM are correct. Once I figured this out, I had no further problems with closing down drives.

Purchasing the lifetime license back in Feb of 2013 was one of the better choices I have made here at BDJ. I had been paying for yearly updates prior to that. I use between 5 to 12 different portable USB drives and Zentimo has been a tool I use every single day.

Igor Tkachenko @Tortuga:
>=>Can never disconnect my externals, even when I kill the processes it shows as the culprits, via Task Mngr.
Zentimo isn't a magic wand that resolves every problem. In case if an external drive is locked by some application Zentimo will help to stop it. But also there are other reasons of inability to stop devices, such as incorrectly installed or non-installed drivers for USB concentrator\motherboard, malfunctioning devices and etc. In this case Zentimo may not help, read more about it here: http://safelyremove.com/e...CannotStop . In your case I think the culprit is in the malfunctioning hardware.

>=> Plus, can't even change the drive icon, *always* get the message:
It's because you were trying to load a malformed ICO file. In the following version which we are working now on the problem will be fixed. Contact us ( http://zentimo.com/support.htm ) if you need help on this matter.

Tortuga Wow! Thanks to ALL who responded :) Sorry to be so late, could only now reach a computer!

*** @Hawkeye: No bkup attached. Processes that impede removal generally are Everything, Listary (those I can kill), then full of System ones which I'm not knowledgeable enough to do anything abt. Can't tell you which ones, I'm not near a PC of mine. Will follow your advice abt PE, thanks!! Even though already hv several other process mngrs. Will see if that one gives me more insight or control.

*** @VLM: Maybe it came out wrong, but I still love Zentimo. NOTHING else in the mkt compares!
But as you can see by my previous posts in this thread, I had to install another program to deal w my HP TP tablets, as Zentimo can't deal w those. If we don't point out problems, the cie can't resolve them. Though, that one wasn't resolved either...
No, I wd never dare rip out any device when there are still processes holding it. That's why if even after killing several of the processes, in the end, I hv to shutdown the PC/Laptop
Can you explain what you mean by 'Microsoft Absurd'?? Is this your 'endearing' term for MS' absurdities in general, or smthg specific?

*** @Igor: Will read the article when I get home, thanks
1) I hv a dual boot via Orico, so same hardware for both. On XP x32 most times I'm able to disconnect, but on W7 Pro x64 it can never. Same problem on laptop W7 x64. The thing is, it used to work on ALL my systems!!
2) As soon as I click on "Change" on the window, it reports the error, so I never get the chance to even choose any img. This happens on all PCs, Laptop. Do you mean that, if even *one* of the images in the Image Fldr is malformed (do you mean corrupted?) the action can not be performed? I will remove all 'User Images' and restart from scratch, see if that resolves the problem. Thank you for the advice
*** Again, thanks to everybody for tips & advice. Much appreciated !!
Peace

Hawkeye Alexandre and others,

Let's break down the backup software. It is running at the system level and will not let any program just close it down or give up it's control of the drive. This is the way Windows is designed. Another situation, you open a file, document.doc on your external drive with Word. You forget it's open and want to remove the drive. If Zentimo, automatically closed Word, or forced Word to release the file, losing all your changes, that would be considered a major bug or flaw. Igor would lose customers, I being one of them after years of use.

Tortuga, said he uses the Task Mgr to close down processes, in this case Word. With the Task Mgr, you don't actually see the files being used. Process Explorer will show you the files, and you would probably have a Homer reaction, DOH. We have all been there. Just like any other computer experience, you need to know how the program operates to use it to it's full ability. Without Zentimo, all you get is the the drive cannot be released at this time, or something equivalent.

Let's go back to the backup software one last time. I prefer full system images over backups running while Windows is running. I needed the software running, if I needed to open a backup file. To fix the issue, I removed it from auto running on startup and then wrote a couple of scripts, one to load the software, if I needed to access a backup file. The second, to release the program from memory when finished. Problem solved.

Tortuga, I just seen your latest email. Yes, Everything and Listery can attach to drives as well. That's their design. When trying to find the culprit, do one at time until you find the one causing the issue instead of shotgunning it. This approach will help you going forward.

Hope this helps everyone in the long run.

You have a hardware or driver related issue. Either your motherboard is broken, or these drives or you have incorrectly installed drivers. This problem is out of Zentimo feature list.

Neil Sorry, but I don't understand why this software is necessary. If you disable write behind caching (WBC) for removable drives, you can unplug without ejecting. I've been doing that for years without any problems.

In fact, most (perhaps all) of the time, write behind caching is disabled by default on removable drives.

Perhaps this software lets you leave WBC on for better performance? If so, how then does it deal with remove without eject?

1. Will this letter E: be stored on the device itself, so that Zentimo will auto-detect the drive letter, when moving to another device?

2. Can the Zentimo program settings be transfered to the other computers, so that the program setup needs to be done only once? How then to transfer the settings to the other computers?

Thanks for your kind information.

Igor Tkachenko Hello Ela!
1. No, the drive letters are not stored on the device because intercomputer management of drive letters can cause lots of issues.
2. Yes, Zentimo have an ability to export and import of the settings. See http://zentimo.com/help/h...ttings.htm

Lupke Brother How much does an upgrade cost for usb safely remove lifetime users to zentimo lifetime?
Jun 13 2018 at 12:23am Copy Link

Igor Tkachenko Lupke Brother,
There's 50% discount on purchasing Zentimo for USB Safely Remove customers. But this discount applies only to regular prices, not suitable for the current promo.

Dunking Is USB Safely Remove still being developed? If not, what happens to the Zentimo lifetime users when your next better project gets released and Zentimo goes the way of Safely Remove? Presumable the lifetime license won't count for much and they may as well have just got a limited time one?

Igor Tkachenko Dunking,
Yes, USB Safely Remove is still developed (for more than 10 years) and will be developed further. We simultaneously make releases for both of the programs, you can find history of releases in our blog: http://blog.crystalrich.com/

You are correct. After a year of free upgrades you can use the latest version you receive during your upgrade period or you can purchase renewal at discounted price: http://zentimo.com/extendLicense.htm

David H (Seattle) @MBe - a clear and unqualified answer was already given above, to Kelly. You'll get updates all the way to v42.0 if that's the last one that came out before one year from your purchase, and you'd be able to use that version forever. Today it's at v2.0.6, if it only gets to v2.3.1 by 6/13/19, then you'll only get up to v2.3.1. This is a common form of license, at least here on BDJ, "one year free" describes it perfectly.

I've used v1 Zentimo on an older machine and love its simplicity and effectiveness, will buy this v2 for a new desktop I'm building.

Igor Tkachenko MBe,
No, the updates are tied to the upgrade period rather than to the version number. Sometimes in case we have missed crucial bugs in a version we fix them and allow all users who updated to the buggy version to update again even if their upgrade period is over.

Dunking @Igor Tkachenko: Thanks for that info, It is good to see a company looking after its long-term users.

Just out of interest, suppose one purchased a 1-year license today and, on reading your response to me, decided a lifetime one would have been more appropriate. Is there a possibility of upgrading for the difference in price or would it mean a new purchase?

John Gee As a happy Zentimo user for many years, I recently had a HDD crash my PC. I had to get a new PC.
I have operated now for 4 weeks without Z and I must say that the USB management in Win10 is fantastic.. YMMV.

Igor Tkachenko John Gee,
As far as I know Win 10 doesn't add much in terms of USB management comparing to Win 7. For example there's no way to see what apps are locking USB device, see stopped but not removed devices, reactivate device back etc. Or am I overlooked something?

Now i see that is for user, but on the mail with the license says:
Congratulations, you are now the owner of the license for Zentimo!
This license allows you using the program personally on every your
computer and get all future upgrades for one year for free.

One user is more than one computer of the same user?
Thanks

Kelly Hamblin I've been using USB Safely Remove for years. Actually, I've been pretty happy with it, but I saw Zentimo on Sale a few years ago, and wanted to purchase it, but was unable to. I'm glad to see it here again.

To those who are asking about the license, I think it is very clear. Click the tab that says, "The Fine Print," and you will find everything you need to know. Upgrades for 1 year and a great price. Why ask for more?

I'm grabbing this. Thank you, Crystal Rich and Bits du Jour.

Yes, you should remove USB Safely Remove before installing Zentimo since both programs had drive letter management functions that may interfere.
