What are people saying about ZenWriter

Roberto there is posibility to check spell? (dictionaries) this looks wonderful but when i start ZenWriter, 15 Open file dialog ask me for an image (i have to close them all). This is a bug? im on xp sp3.
May 11 2011 at 8:15pm Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @Roberto Porcar
Yes, this is a bug, I'll fix it soon. Select any of preinstalled backgrounds and I think this dialog will never appear again :)

Spellchecker is located in bottom right corner

Note to all users:
All updates will be free
Beenokle - May 11 2011 at 11:16pm Copy Link
Roberto great.. now its solved. there is an easy way to add spanish dictionary? ctrl+b, i, u.. give me an Invalid class typecast error too.
May 11 2011 at 11:35pm Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @Roberto Porcar
Unfortunately there is no easy way to add Spanish dictionary right now. It will be added in the next ZinWriter update within next two weeks

As for Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and similar bugs. Please download and install ZenWriter again. I've fixed this bug :)

Let's use :)

Roberto works flawlessly now. i recommend this software :)

webdancer I've been using v1.04 since this was on GOTD and I think this is an awesome app. Now that the developer has added spell check, I can recommend ZW without reservation.

This is NOT a word processing app; it's an e-Moleskine on steroids. ZW allows you to create an environment conducive to creativity. Once you get your creative thoughts down, you can use a serious word processor to do detailed formatting.

John H What a sweet little program.

2 Questions.

1- Can I install this to my DropBox Folder as a Portable Application so I can use it on my desktop and notebook computer? Would I need two licenses to do this?

2- Where is the Zen Writer database kept so I can back it up .... preferably in my Dropbox storage.

May 12 2011 at 6:56pm Copy Link
lisba f Are you going to include the Unicode feature?
May 12 2011 at 7:22pm Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @JTH Qwerty

2 Answers :)

1. Yes, I think you can do it. But if you'll run into bugs, then just reinstall ZenWriter on second machine

2. Look in the bottom of the "settings" window. There are "Library Location" edit box. Click on it and navigate to folder you like.

Personally I'm using Dropbox to store my texts too :)

--- --- ---

@lisba ?
What language do you wish to support in ZenWriter?
Beenokle - May 13 2011 at 3:06am Copy Link
lisba f Classical Greek.

Please provide me with an example Greek text here:

I think I can add the Unicode support by the next ZenWriter update

Faisal Humayun Discovering gems as these is exactly why I adore BDJ. ZenWriter makes pouring all those prolific ruminations a joy and at this price point it's a must-buy!

The program itself is quite robust (no instability experienced in win 7 64 bit) dual monitors don't confound it, low CPU usage clocks between 15-25Mb of RAM (depending on the kind of images/music playing). It is also extensible in how it lets users copy their own background images and ambient music tracks to its home directories. Outstanding!

Please don't hesitate to support Ruslan, he can be followed on twitter:!/beenokle_team
and facebook

Bravo Ruslan, my hats off to you for really creating something special !

Thank you for the kind words :)

You can move ZenWriter from one monitor to another using the Alt + Right and Alt + Left shortcuts

I Have downloaded Zenwriter via this page, do I have to download another version from your homepage after purchase, did I miss something along the process, please tell me how.

John Seiffer Can I get it to work in a non-maximized window? I have 2 monitors and it completely takes over the big one. Can i at least get it to move to the small one?

PS I realize that this is what some people want

Kevin Lintner This is a sweet program. At first I was taken back by the size of the installer, but it installed quickly, activated w/o any errors, and runs smoothly on Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit. Thank you. I will help spread the word.
May 15 2011 at 3:04am Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @John Seiffer
ZenWriter works only in full screen mode.
Windowed mode will ruin the entire idea of distraction free writing. Please use Alt+Right key combination to move ZenWriter between monitors.

@Holger Jensen
I'll add Danish dictionary soon :)

@PK MacGuy
Chineese support is on the way :)

@Kevin Lintner
Thank you! :)

LetMeSleep Hello, Ruslan.
I also have been using ZenWriter since it was on GOTD, and have purchased a license today.
Should I just upgrade my install and then use the new key, or uninstall-reinstall?
If i understand correctly the license is for one computer, and can be transferred to another. At this price, I'll probably just purchase another license for my notebook.
Will there be any problem opening what was written on one PC or notebook with the other?
Thank you for your help, as well as your work (and at this price, it's almost another giveaway).
May 15 2011 at 6:15am Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @l y
You can even use previous license key if it is your personal notebook :) Without purchasing

And I recommed you to reinstall ZenWriter simply because I've made some bug fixes yesterday.

ZenWriter library is located in the "My documents" folder

David Powelstock This is a very lovely writing application. Kudos to Ruslan! The only feature missing, imo, is typewriter scrolling--i.e., keeping the cursor in the middle or top of the screen as you add lines, instead of having it going to the bottom of the screen and staying there. I'm buying to support the application and hoping Ruslan will consider adding this feature at some point.

LetMeSleep Hello again, Ruslan.
Thank you for your quick (and generous) response to my questions.
I went ahead and purchased another license. As David P. said above, to support you and ZenWriter.
Thank you to Ruslan, Beenokle, and BDJ.

Mick Hayes 1 i also want sizeable window to work in, not just maximized.
2 Can i add fonts?
3 How do i add dictionary to spell checker? (...where do i find dictionaries?)
4 i clicked on minimized button to bring back active screen. background image popped up, but, nothing else. The program also locked up.
5 Is line spacing in ZenWriter's future? Single/one and a half/double spacing? Line height, as well?
6 How about cut/copy and paste?
7 And save/save as?
May 15 2011 at 8:01am Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @l y
Thank you :)

@Mick Hayes
ZenWriter, as @webdancer mentioned above is not a word processing app. ZenWriter was created in order to encourage you to write :)

2. No, at this time not. I think I'll add this possibility in future updates
3. I'll add more dictionaries in next update
4. Unfortunately I can not reproduce this error :(
5. Yes, but I think that these options I will apply to the entire document
6. Please use keyboard shortcuts: Ctrl+X to cut, Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V for paste
7. ZenWriter saves automatically everything you type. To save as please use Ctrl+S

John H Give us choices for our path to Zen.

Life is entirely different using my 24 inch monitor (1920X 1200). I essentially have the work space of 2 separate monitors in one physical package. This is not because I just want bigger. I need more workspace. Zen hogs all that extra workspace. I would need it to have its own window.

I do mechanical engineering tech writing. I need a CAD drawing open along with a Math program and MS Wordpad. Those other programs are not distractions. I do not work strictly from my imagination or emotions, I synthesize from other sources that I need visible.

Your library database concept will be very useful. It would be good if ZW opened the last document in use when it was closed.

May 15 2011 at 8:42am Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @John qwerty, @Mick Hayes, @John Seiffer

Ok :) I'll think on adding windowed mode
Beenokle - May 15 2011 at 8:54am Copy Link
S B JTH Qwerty's right, this *is* a sweet app.

As webdancer and Faisal Humayun have pointed out ZenWriter provides an environment (your choice, quiet, contemplative, or even chaotic) for creativity and basic brainstorming. Use another app to control the final layout if necessary. On-demand spell-checking *is* included.

ZenWriter provides a full screen, with settable backgrounds and music (select among your own, the several of each that are supplied,or turn them off). The backgrounds have both "Day" (bright) and "Night" (dark) versions. The font color changes between black and white automatically.

The files are created as rich text (.rtf). (currently ZW will handle the usual windows rtf screen shortcuts and will display bold, italics, underline, font size, etc., and will save them, but these things seem lost when the file is reloaded into ZW)

ZW handles large screens very well, making all of the real estate into your selected environment, but nicely centering the active document. There is a basic, unobtrusive menu system that stays on the right side of the screen.

It's actively developing, and its developer seems committed both to it and to its design philosophy.

As others have said, very clean and sweet.

DrTeeth I was just in the middle of c/o ZenWriter not installing when the screen loaded...after a good 20 seconds. Office 2010 and LibreOffice load faster. I just timed the loading after closing down an it should have been cached and fast...56 seconds makes it a non starter here. Will leave it installed to see if the issue can be fixed by the deal's expiry.

I would also like to be able to choose my own music...some thoughts develop better with Joe Meeks' music.
May 15 2011 at 9:41am Copy Link
Tazzie I love ZenWriter and will be getting another license today. It is just so calming and I can zone out and just let the thoughts and ideas flow.

I would really love to be able to add fonts ... it would add to the ambience of the program to be able to use fonts such as handwriting or scripts, etc.

I appreciate the hard work you put into it and your willingness to consider our ideas in the ongoing development of ZenWriter. I encourage everyone to check it out ... it has more potential than many realize!
May 15 2011 at 9:49am Copy Link
Ruslan Agarizaev @DrTeeth
I'm afraid that I will not be able to solve this problem so quickly.

ZenWriter usually start within 3 seconds, even on my fairly old laptop.
The problem of a long run, though rarely, but occasionally occurs, and I still did not understand what could cause this. Maybe anti-virus, or a set of audio codecs, or something else, I do not know :(

It would be great if you send me specifications of your computer such as operating system, RAM, CPU, etc. If you have a laptop or notebook, you can just write its model.

@S B, @Tazzie
Thank you! :)

Stephane M I am not sure I will really need it but like others I like the originality of it and I wanted to support the developer by purchasing one copy.
Well done!
May 15 2011 at 4:19pm Copy Link
Mick Hayes As i was writing my query, i realized that ZW is not meant to be a full blown word processor. So, i tried to limit myself to just a few key capabilities. :)

Simplicity by design is a large part of its appeal.

Thanks for the response.

HJ B I installed this program on a computer running windows 7 - 64. Upon start up, it immediately displays a pale non-standard full screen layout screen, and freezes. The only way to break out of it is with cntrl. alt del.

Something is definitely wrong with the program. I will uninstall it.

Nov 13 2011 at 6:24am Copy Link
Pete Wilson Works like a charm on my 64-bit Windows 7 machine.

I'd never heard of this app until today. I just bought a copy after trying it out. There's no grammar checker, but I really like the minimalist approach. The UI is very streamlined so you just have a writing space. I'm a big fan and user of Microsoft Word, but sometimes all that bloat just gets in the way. I'm going to start using this for my note taking and journal writing and see how it goes. So far, it's very nice.

Interested User Hi, this application looks very nice and will be helpfull when trying to put together thoughts without distractions - a real shame the GAOTD readers in Germany did not appreciate it (even for free).
One question to the licence policy: on may 11 you wrote "all updates will be free" however in the BitsDuJour policy summary only updates of the current version (1.*) will be free, upgrades will cost money. What is the correct understanding ?
